When you eat food, it is broken down into glucose, or sugar. Glucose is responsible for providing your body with the energy it needs. In order to use the glucose as energy, your body requires insulin. When you have Type 1 diabetes , your body does not make its own insulin and requires injections for assistance with this.
With type 2 diabetes , your body does not have the ability to make enough insulin or use it properly. Because the cells in your body cannot use the glucose as energy, this glucose stays in your bloodstream which leads to high blood sugar levels and potential problems.

Healthy Guide To Living With Diabetes

Healthy Guide To Living With Diabetes

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. In total, more than 29 million people in the Unites States are affected by diabetes, with type 2 diabetes accounting for between 90 and 95 percent of all cases. There are many things we can do in our lives to be healthier, but proper diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and stress management are essential for living well and effectively manage your diabetes.
What is Diabetes?
Insulin is an extremely important hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin regulates the breakdown of sugars, starches, fats, and proteins from the food and beverages we consume. Insulin controls food is broken down to sugar, and how sugar is then used for energy by your body’s muscles, brain, and major organs to function properly. Insulin also regulates other functions of the body’s cells, including growth.
Prediabetes is when the body’s cells become resistant to the effects of insulin. Diabetes is when the pancreas can no longer keep up with the high insulin demand and hence, leads to blood sugar levels reaching toxic levels. When you have diabetes, your body cannot properly use and store food for energy. Our bodies need glucose, the form of sugar most food is broken down to. When our cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, these sugars can no longer be adequately delivered to the body’s cells for energy. In other words, diabetes is when the insulin resistance has become severe enough that the blood sugar remains extremely high. As blood Continue reading

The Cure for Obesity and Diabetes Is Processed Food (Part 3): How Nutrifoods can Actualize Health

Continued from: The Cure for Obesity and Diabetes is Processed Food (Part 2): Incentives, Influence, and Innovation .
read international headlines today, based on a randomized controlled trial published in the prestigious journal, The Lancet . Study participants were first taken off their medications for diabetes and hypertension, replaced their usual food with ~850-calorie per day liquid meal replacement shakes for 3-5 months, reintroduced regular foods back into their diets over 2-8 weeks, and also received structured support for long-term weight loss maintenance. The average participant lost an impressive 22lb and a quarter lost 33lb or more!
The clinical outcomes were equally amazing: 46% had their diabetes go into remission, and of those who lost 33lb or more, an amazing 86% had their diabetes go into remission! Almost half the participants were also able to remain off all hypertension medication with no rise in blood pressure. One of the studys lead authors, Professor Mike Lean concluded :
Our findings suggest that even if you have had Type 2 diabetes for six years, putting the disease into remission is feasible and could have extraordinary benefits, both for the individual and the NHS [UKs health care system]
Wait a minute: liquid meal replacement shakes? That cant be healthy right? The evidence suggests otherwise: to a scientist, healthy is relative, and when meal replacements are used to replace high-calorie, low-nutrient processed (junk) food, they can be extraordinarily effective and healthy in comparison.
In Part 1 and Part 2 of this series, we discussed Continue reading

BREAKING – Today, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, sticking to his campaign pledge, introduced legislation to legalize marijuana in Canada. But not just medical marijuana – recreational marijuana. A milestone in the country’s history and one for the world, too.

National conference: improving diabetes transition – Lynsey Choules

National conference: improving diabetes transition – Lynsey Choules

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Diabetes UK to a national conference organised by Diabetes UK which followed the publication of the UK’s first National Diabetes Transition Audit; a report looking at the transfer from paediatric to adult services within diabetes care.
I jumped at the chance to get involved with this as it is a subject that I am very passionate about due to my own experiences a few years ago. The period in a young person’s life where their care changes is hugely important to get right as it can affect their long-term health outcomes as well as their engagement with diabetes care.
It was quite bizarre to arrive and sit down in a room full of 60+ healthcare professionals at first and I thought I might feel out of place for the rest of the day. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) had come from all over the country to understand the key findings of the report as well as share best practice and hear from clinical leads for diabetes. I’m used to being in groups with other people with diabetes, thanks to being a member of Diabetes UK’s Young Adults Panel and completing courses such as DAFNE, but being outnumbered by HCPs made me feel quite nervous!
I found it really interesting that only 20% of attendees were from adult diabetes services, especially since there was a lot of discussion about how adult and paediatric services need to be more connected as it is both sides that handle the transition of care.
The study itself involved following paediatric patients using their NHS numbers, which were tracked over 11 years (2003-2014) as they moved into adult care, f Continue reading
