I love chocolate and sweets, and I know many people who love it as well. One of the misconceptions is that eating chocolate will cause high blood sugar. Actually, sugar is present in many more foods than chocolate (e.g., white flour and white flour-based products are also high in sugar). Nevertheless, it’s important to talk about the signs of high blood sugar, because it is one of the most troublesome diseases of the 21st century. What is awful is that children today suffer from diabetes, and it all comes down to bad eating habits and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Any diabetes treatment plan includes control of blood sugar.
That being said, let’s take a look at the problem, causes, and signs of high blood sugar you should not ignore.
What are high blood sugar levels?
In order to understand what classifies as high blood sugar levels, we must understand the normal levels first. These numbers are for people without diabetes. Normal blood sugar can be divided into three groups: fasting, before meals, and after meals. The normal fasting blood sugar level on awakening should be under 100 mg/dl. A before-meal blood sugar level is normal when it is between 70 and 99 mg/dl. Two hours after your meal, the blood sugar level should be less than 140 mg/dl. Now, just as there are two types of normal blood sugar levels (fastening and before a meal are almost the same), there are two types of high blood sugar.
Fasting hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is when your sugar is above 130 mg/dl on awakening, before meals, or after not eating or drinking anything for 8 hours.

Strawberries pack beneficial qualities that may protect us from developing diabetes and heart disease, according to new research from the University of Warwick in the UK.
Researchers there discovered that extracts from strawberries activate a protein in our bodies that can increase antioxidant activities.
Called 'Nrf2,' this protein decreases blood lipids and cholesterol, both of which can lead to cardiovascular problems.
First study of its kind
This study was the first to prove that strawberry extracts actively stimulate proteins that can protect us from disease.
Previous studies found that eating strawberries could counter post-meal blood glucose and low density lipoprotein, called 'bad' cholesterol, decreasing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
"We've discovered the science behind how strawberries work to increase our in-built defenses to keep cells, organs and blood vessels healthy and which can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and diabetes," said Paul Thornalley, professor from Warwick Medical School and lead researcher.
Future studies could help identify the best varieties of strawberries and how to process and eat them for the optimal health benefits.

Since many different factors can complicate type 2 diabetes, like pregnancy or co-existing medical conditions, it's important to address diabetes from a holistic perspective, including management strategies to reverse the condition and prevention techniques to keep type 2 diabetes from recurring.
Managing type 2 diabetes is the first step in reversing the condition. Management strategies may include a variety of different things:
1. Healthy eating: Diabetics benefit from a low-glycemic diet and carefully planned meals that include the right balance of macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein and fat.
2. Exercising: Regular physical activity helps to lower blood sugar, boost immunity and improve overall health in diabetics.
3. Taking medication: Insulin therapy, metformin, or other types of diabetes drugs may be needed to manage the acute symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Once type 2 diabetes has been effectively managed and lifestyle changes have been implemented, blood sugar levels will indicate whether the disease has gone into remission. However, this doesn't mean you can't relapse and develop type 2 diabetes again.
Prevention strategies are necessary, including dietary adjustments, regular exercise, and periodic check-ups with your general physician or endocrinologist to ensure that your blood sugar level is in a consistently safe range and that your insulin sensitivity is not impaired.
