Precision Xtra Vs. Novamax Plus: Ketone Meter Evaluation

Precision Xtra Vs. Novamax Plus: Ketone Meter Evaluation

With the rise in interest in the n=1 experiment I’ve been blogging about since May 2012 (read my latest updates about it here, here, here and here), so many of you have begun testing your own blood ketones to see how well you are doing in pursuit of reaching that glorious state of “nutritional ketosis.” Attaining blood ketone levels of 0.5-3.0 millimolar is the optimal level for producing an appropriate level of beta-hydroxybutyrate to commence fat-burning and to serve as an excellent alternative fuel source for your brain and body for optimal performance according to what Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek outline so beautifully in their outstanding MUST-HAVE 2012 book The Art & Science Of Low Carbohydrate Performance. If you haven’t already picked up your own copy of this book, then I cannot recommend it highly enough to you as an invaluable resource in your pursuit of living an optimally healthy low-carb lifestyle. As people have been shopping around for their own blood ketone meter, I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from readers who have asked me for my recommendation between which of the two major ketone meters they should get to test their blood levels. Is there any difference between the Precision Xtra and NovaMax Plus blood ketone meters? I’ve personally tried both of these meters and have been using the Precision Xtra results to document my n=1 experiment. Let’s take a closer look at the PROS and CONS of each: **Precision Xtra Blood Ketone Meter** PROS: – Accurate and clear blood ketone measuring – Sturdy and strong test strips – More precise than urine ketone testing CONS: – Requires more blood than glucose testing – Test strips can be quite expensive – Not available for purchase in stores **NovaMax Plus Blood Ketone Meter** PROS Continue reading >>

At Last: Nutritional Ketosis

At Last: Nutritional Ketosis

It took one whole week after my trip to CT to find my way back into nutritional ketosis (1,5-3mmol/L)! But now I am here… This means: Extra energy Less needed sleep Burning fat at maximum Not so hungry Optimal fuel for the brain Bad breath… So how can you turbo your way into nutritional ketosis? Eat lots, LOTS of fat (butter, ghee, coconut oil) Avoid: berries, nuts, fruit, alkohol, too much dairy Bullet coffee helps Eat only 2-3 times a day In South Africa this is where you can get hold of a blood keton measurer: M-KEM, Durban Road. (At the Durban Road off-ramp from N1 heading out in direction of Paarl). Price: R149.95 B-Ketone strips (Box of 10). Price: R129.90 That’s R12.99 per strip! In Sweden the strips cost R30 each… But it is a pricey hobby, but for me, so worth it. It is very motivating to keep track of what you eat and how it affects your body and definately helps weight loss! Continue reading >>

The Basic Keto Diet Plan – 30 Best Practices For Losing Weight + Scaring Away Cancer

The Basic Keto Diet Plan – 30 Best Practices For Losing Weight + Scaring Away Cancer

A basic Keto Diet plan can be found in Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, but I’ll summarize it for you here. I’m also going to note that I consider this a diet for your induction period, as I’ve always added berries and other no-no’s in after a couple of weeks with no bad effects. Your stomach shrinks so much that suddenly a couple strawberries is like eating a seven layer chocolate cake. If this is your first time hearing about the keto diet, learn more about it here. Rules of a basic keto diet plan: 20 net carbohydrates per day (that’s the total carbs minus fiber) Eat meats and dairy that are 1-2 carbs are less (most meats have zero) Eat vegetables that are 5 or less Eat them baked, fried, boiled, stir-fried, sauteed, roasted or microwaved. No sugars (simple carbohydrates) – white sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, molasses, corn syrup, beer (contains barley malt), milk (contains lactose), flavored yogurts, fruit juice, and fruit. No starches (complex carbohydrates) – grains (even “whole” grains), rice, cereals, flour, cornstarch, breads, pastas, muffins, bagels, crackers, and “starchy” vegetables such as slow-cooked beans (pinto, lima, black beans), carrots, parsnips, corn, peas, potatoes, French fries, potato chips. Meats on a basic keto diet plan: Meat: Beef, steak, hamburger, pork , ham, bacon, lamb, veal, etc. Processed meats are OK too (like hot dogs and and sausage) but try to buy the organic stuff so that you’re not packing your body full of preservatives and other yucky things. Also look out for corn syrup on the labels which is a common gross additive. Poultry: Chicken, turkey, duck, or other fowl. Fish and Shellfish: Tuna, salmon, catfish, bass, trout, shrimp, scallops, crab, crab legs and lobster. Basically anything that isn’t f Continue reading >>

Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol: How To Lose Fat Way Faster Than You Should

Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol: How To Lose Fat Way Faster Than You Should

The best way to lose weight on the Bulletproof Diet is with Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. But if waiting for results just isn’t your thing, you can use this Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol – but only if you are currently significantly overweight or obese, and you have healthy, functioning kidneys and liver. However, you need to understand that your body stores toxins in fat that your liver couldn’t excrete, so when you lose weight very rapidly, those toxins are released and can make you very sick. This Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol helps you avoid any side effects from this toxin release, so it’s important to follow the plan carefully. In a nutshell: the plan uses 6 days of ketosis – when your body burns fats for energy – followed by 1 day of carbohydrate loading along with constant toxin binding supplements to help your body get rid of the released toxins. This protocol isn’t low-calorie, and you don’t run the same risk of causing metabolic problems that you do when you follow a low-calorie diet. Being fat sucks. It’s bad for every part of your body. Your body is actually breaking down, your relationships suffer, your brain doesn’t work right, your joints hurt, you lose muscle, and you just don’t look good in the mirror. Conventional wisdom says you should start cutting fat and calories and run on a treadmill for an hour a day. Then you’re made to feel as if it’s your fault because their advice doesn’t work. After living this for years when I weighed 300 pounds, I know how frustrating this can be. Luckily, losing fat doesn’t have to be that hard. In an earlier post, you discovered how to increase muscle growth, brain function, and longevity with regular Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. Now, you can learn how to lose massive Continue reading >>

The Benefits Of A Ketogenic Diet And Its Role In Cancer Treatment

The Benefits Of A Ketogenic Diet And Its Role In Cancer Treatment

Could a ketogenic diet eventually be a “standard of care” drug-free treatment for cancer? Personally, I believe it’s absolutely crucial, for whatever type of cancer you’re trying to address, and hopefully some day it will be adopted as a first line of treatment. A ketogenic diet calls for eliminating all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates, and replacing them with healthy fats and high-quality protein. The premise is that since cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body, then lowering the glucose level in your blood though carb and protein restriction literally starves the cancer cells into oblivion. Additionally, low protein intake tends to minimize the mTOR pathway that accelerates cell proliferation. This type of diet, in which you restrict all but non-starchy vegetable carbs and replace them with low to moderate amounts of high-quality protein and high amounts of beneficial fat, is what I recommend for everyone, whether you have cancer or not. It’s a diet that will help optimize your weight and all chronic degenerative disease. Eating this way will help you convert from carb burning mode to fat burning. Dr. Thomas Seyfried is one of the leading pioneer academic researchers in promoting how to treat cancer nutritionally. He’s been teaching neurogenetics and neurochemistry as it relates to cancer treatment at Yale University and Boston College for the past 25 years. He’s written over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters, and has also published a book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. Abbott Rebrands Optium Diabetes Testers, Introduces 'no Coding'

Abbott Rebrands Optium Diabetes Testers, Introduces 'no Coding'

Abbott Diabetes Care in South Africa has relaunched its Optium glucose meter, blood glucose and ketone test strips under its global FreeStyle brand, adding a functional 'no coding' enhancement to the product that aims to make the use of the FreeStyle Optium Blood Glucose and Ketone Test Strips - and management of diabetes - that much easier for insulin users. Says Lorraine Bellingham, Commercial Manager Sub Saharan Africa: "For insulin users, regularly checking blood glucose levels and ketones is a way of life. Accuracy is critical but so is ease of use and efficiency. The rebranding has allowed us to deliver a fresh, new, updated design to the South African market but, more importantly, the new design houses an updated product - the new technology into our testing strips eliminates the need for painstaking coding, or calibration, of each batch of new test strips in the meter without compromising our highest standard of accuracy." "This will increase speed and simplicity of use of the blood glucose and ketone test strips, and reduce the possibility of erroneous readings which occur when calibration is omitted. It's just one step less but it's one that makes management of this chronic condition that much easier for people who must sometimes do a blood test four or more times a day." No coding Announced at the recent Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA) Congress, the 'no coding' feature of the Abbott Diabetes Care FreeStyle Optium range is a valuable, functional enhancement that will serve to better differentiate this product range in the local market. The new test strips can also be used with older Optium meters - there is no need to replace or upgrade them. Notes Bellingham: "Thanks to our expertise in strips manufacturing, the new Continue reading >>

Ketosis

Ketosis

Not to be confused with Ketoacidosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy. Ketosis is a result of metabolizing fat to provide energy. Ketosis is a nutritional process characterised by serum concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 mM, with low and stable levels of insulin and blood glucose.[1][2] It is almost always generalized with hyperketonemia, that is, an elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood throughout the body. Ketone bodies are formed by ketogenesis when liver glycogen stores are depleted (or from metabolising medium-chain triglycerides[3]). The main ketone bodies used for energy are acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate,[4] and the levels of ketone bodies are regulated mainly by insulin and glucagon.[5] Most cells in the body can use both glucose and ketone bodies for fuel, and during ketosis, free fatty acids and glucose synthesis (gluconeogenesis) fuel the remainder. Longer-term ketosis may result from fasting or staying on a low-carbohydrate diet (ketogenic diet), and deliberately induced ketosis serves as a medical intervention for various conditions, such as intractable epilepsy, and the various types of diabetes.[6] In glycolysis, higher levels of insulin promote storage of body fat and block release of fat from adipose tissues, while in ketosis, fat reserves are readily released and consumed.[5][7] For this reason, ketosis is sometimes referred to as the body's "fat burning" mode.[8] Ketosis and ketoacidosis are similar, but ketoacidosis is an acute life-threatening state requiring prompt medical intervention while ketosis can be physiological. However, there are situations (such as treatment-resistant Continue reading >>

Four Weeks Of Strict Lchf And Ketone Monitoring

Four Weeks Of Strict Lchf And Ketone Monitoring

Can ketone measurement help you lose weight and improve performance? That’s the main question I’ll be trying to answer with my four-week experiment. See Report #1 for diet and experiment design. Note: This experiment was done six months ago and initially only reported on my Swedish blog. This is a somewhat delayed translation! Below are graphs of my weight and waistline over this first four-week period, as well as the results of blood and urine ketone measurements. After two to three weeks of light nutritional ketosis, I’ve now spent 8 days in “optimal ketosis” – that is, between 1.5 – 3 mmol/L. Want to know what’s happened? The effects of optimal ketosis Weight Although happy with my weight before this experiment, I’ve become noticeably leaner: -4kgs (9 pounds) and -6cm (2,5 inches) around the waist. This, of course, in complete absence of hunger – in fact, I’ve seldom felt so constantly sated. Food is tasty to eat at mealtimes, but I can skip a meal without even blinking. My weight – initally 100kgs – was already well within normal range, considering I’m 202 cm tall – 6 feet 7 inches – and do strength training regularly. The other measurement I kept track of was my waistline. 94cm or less around the waist is considered excellent for men; I started out with 91cm, and am now around 85cm (33 inches). I need to punch a new hole in my belt, which means I’m leaner than I’ve been in a very long time. Not bad for a forty-year-old father who has limited time to work out and always eats his fill! Mental effects Being the father of a small child, I often get tired from lack of sleep, and during the first week of the experiment I sometimes felt even woozier than usual. This is natural while the brain adapts to running on ketones. The last two w Continue reading >>

The Truth Behind The World's Most Cutting-edge, Fat-burning Performance Meal Plan: The Keto Diet

The Truth Behind The World's Most Cutting-edge, Fat-burning Performance Meal Plan: The Keto Diet

Timothy Noakes, M.D., is an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. While his name may not ring a bell here in the U.S., he’s a full-blown celebrity in his native South Africa and one of the most accomplished exercise physiologists on the planet. You can’t walk by a restaurant in Cape Town that doesn’t offer a “Noakes option”—say, an avocado stuffed with breakfast sausage and eggs, or a double cheeseburger with lettuce sans bun—and evidence of his teachings seems to be everywhere, mostly in the form of the nation’s best-known athletes, including ageless golfing legend Gary Player and eight-time Ironman World Champion Paula Newby-Fraser. In fact, Noakes’ celebrity these days is such that he’s even been pulled into South African presidential politics: To echo the country’s papers of record, “Is President Jacob Zuma’s and his wife’s dramatic weight loss a result of the Noakes Diet?” No one is sure about the president, but his wife, definitely: She’s lost 66 pounds following the Noakes plan. To high-performing athletes, Noakes preaches that the bedrock tenet of endurance athletic nutrition—that winning performance is best fueled by eating lots of carbohydrates—is simply wrong. Instead, he believes athletes can alter their bodies so that their metabolism burns fat as a primary fuel source, a physiological process known as ketosis, either from stored body fat or from the foods they eat every day. For non-athletes and anyone trying to lose weight or keep it off, Noakes’ advice is that eating a high-fat diet, with few if any refined carbs and as little sugar as possible, will switch on the same fat-burning system and keep your body lean and your weight stable without making Continue reading >>

Using Ketonix Breath Testing For Nutritional Ketosis Review

Using Ketonix Breath Testing For Nutritional Ketosis Review

If you have been a reader of the site before, you’ll know that I used the concepts from the Bulletproof diet and a lot Bulletproof coffee to help put me into nutritional ketosis and lose a bucket load of weight. That sent me down the should I be checking for ketones, but also thinking well if I’m eating (and drinking) so much saturated fat have I reached and maintained a level of nutritional ketosis? I really wanted to know too as nutritional ketosis (not diabetic ketosis!!) is meant to be the place where your brain is meant to work better. It is also the place where, if you do suffer epileptic seizures, that it helps to reduce the frequency of them. Now I don’t have epilepsy, but I do like the idea I am helping my central nervous system function at a better state. That is another reason why I experiment with and do take various supplements, like unfair advantage, adaptogenic herbs and nootropics for the brain. (more on those to come) Use “BIOHACKER” to get a discount at checkout – valid until the end of July 2017. Blood Vs Breath Ketones Testing I think a lot of people try guess when they have hit the magical place called nutritional ketosis. However, we learnt from ketone researcher Dr Brianna Stubbs interview that the three ways to measure ketone levels are using either blood strips, urine testing strips or breath acetone levels. Measuring acetone levels in your breath is the new kid on the block for testing ketone levels.. Now I think that is awesome not having to prick or finger all the time and also saving on not buying ketone strips from a pharmacy. Why Acetone Breath Levels Are Best Listen to Michel Lundell’s interview on episode 14 of the Biohackers Lab podcast. He explains from his tests why he feels measuring breath acetone levels is better than Continue reading >>
