Poor Ketone Levels In Low-carb Diet
Hi, I have been looking to buy Ketone test strips in South-Africa, but couldn't find it since they aren't stocked anywhere. I'm on a Ketogenic diet and found a new company that supplies them online and delivers to your doorstep in South-Africa. It is called LIPOstix and can be baught online via www.dietnostix.co.za/lipostix ; each pack includes 30 test strips. Hopefully this helps Regards Reply to Anonymous Ignorance is bliss.. Health24 get someone who knows what they are talking about Reply to Suprised I have lost 20 kgs on Atkins almost three sizes down. It's the most successful diet for me. I know the doc doesn't approve of it as such, but I believe that I would rather stick to a diet I can handle and that works for me, and become thinner, than stay fat and have to worry about the long term effects of obesity. You get the ketone sticks at most chemists. Reply to Another Dieter Hi Loz Are you on the Atkins diet? Where did you buy the test strips to test the ketone levels? How much weight have you lost so far? Reply to Paula The amount of ketones in your urine doesn't correlate to the amount weightloss. If you drink alot of fluids in a day this will change the ketone level reflected in your urine - only because the concentration level is less. If you're in ketosis then you'll be losing weight - don't worry about the ketosis levels as such. In Atkins book he makes it clear that provided the stick is turning slightly purple, then things are on track. Reply to Another Dieter Continue reading >>

At Last: Nutritional Ketosis
It took one whole week after my trip to CT to find my way back into nutritional ketosis (1,5-3mmol/L)! But now I am here… This means: Extra energy Less needed sleep Burning fat at maximum Not so hungry Optimal fuel for the brain Bad breath… So how can you turbo your way into nutritional ketosis? Eat lots, LOTS of fat (butter, ghee, coconut oil) Avoid: berries, nuts, fruit, alkohol, too much dairy Bullet coffee helps Eat only 2-3 times a day In South Africa this is where you can get hold of a blood keton measurer: M-KEM, Durban Road. (At the Durban Road off-ramp from N1 heading out in direction of Paarl). Price: R149.95 B-Ketone strips (Box of 10). Price: R129.90 That’s R12.99 per strip! In Sweden the strips cost R30 each… But it is a pricey hobby, but for me, so worth it. It is very motivating to keep track of what you eat and how it affects your body and definately helps weight loss! Continue reading >>

Precision Xtra Vs. Novamax Plus: Ketone Meter Evaluation
With the rise in interest in the n=1 experiment I’ve been blogging about since May 2012 (read my latest updates about it here, here, here and here), so many of you have begun testing your own blood ketones to see how well you are doing in pursuit of reaching that glorious state of “nutritional ketosis.” Attaining blood ketone levels of 0.5-3.0 millimolar is the optimal level for producing an appropriate level of beta-hydroxybutyrate to commence fat-burning and to serve as an excellent alternative fuel source for your brain and body for optimal performance according to what Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek outline so beautifully in their outstanding MUST-HAVE 2012 book The Art & Science Of Low Carbohydrate Performance. If you haven’t already picked up your own copy of this book, then I cannot recommend it highly enough to you as an invaluable resource in your pursuit of living an optimally healthy low-carb lifestyle. As people have been shopping around for their own blood ketone meter, I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from readers who have asked me for my recommendation between which of the two major ketone meters they should get to test their blood levels. Is there any difference between the Precision Xtra and NovaMax Plus blood ketone meters? I’ve personally tried both of these meters and have been using the Precision Xtra results to document my n=1 experiment. Let’s take a closer look at the PROS and CONS of each: **Precision Xtra Blood Ketone Meter** PROS: – Accurate and clear blood ketone measuring – Sturdy and strong test strips – More precise than urine ketone testing CONS: – Requires more blood than glucose testing – Test strips can be quite expensive – Not available for purchase in stores **NovaMax Plus Blood Ketone Meter** PROS Continue reading >>

Four Weeks Of Strict Lchf And Ketone Monitoring
Can ketone measurement help you lose weight and improve performance? That’s the main question I’ll be trying to answer with my four-week experiment. See Report #1 for diet and experiment design. Note: This experiment was done six months ago and initially only reported on my Swedish blog. This is a somewhat delayed translation! Below are graphs of my weight and waistline over this first four-week period, as well as the results of blood and urine ketone measurements. After two to three weeks of light nutritional ketosis, I’ve now spent 8 days in “optimal ketosis” – that is, between 1.5 – 3 mmol/L. Want to know what’s happened? The effects of optimal ketosis Weight Although happy with my weight before this experiment, I’ve become noticeably leaner: -4kgs (9 pounds) and -6cm (2,5 inches) around the waist. This, of course, in complete absence of hunger – in fact, I’ve seldom felt so constantly sated. Food is tasty to eat at mealtimes, but I can skip a meal without even blinking. My weight – initally 100kgs – was already well within normal range, considering I’m 202 cm tall – 6 feet 7 inches – and do strength training regularly. The other measurement I kept track of was my waistline. 94cm or less around the waist is considered excellent for men; I started out with 91cm, and am now around 85cm (33 inches). I need to punch a new hole in my belt, which means I’m leaner than I’ve been in a very long time. Not bad for a forty-year-old father who has limited time to work out and always eats his fill! Mental effects Being the father of a small child, I often get tired from lack of sleep, and during the first week of the experiment I sometimes felt even woozier than usual. This is natural while the brain adapts to running on ketones. The last two w Continue reading >>

Why Ketonix
Why Ketonix rather than a urine or blood test for ketones? As always there is a short and a long answer, the short answer is: Ketones are formed by breaking down fatty acids in your liver and can be used instead of glucose. When your body breaks down fat and creates ketones your body is in a state called ketosis. There are many advantages to using fat as energy source instead of sugar (carbohydrates). There are also many reasons for choosing a diet that gets your body into a ketogenic state, some therapeutic uses include the treatment of epilepsy, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, increased fertility and weight loss. Ketosis is not the same state as ketoacidosis which can occur when a person with diabetes type 1 has a very high blood sugar level combined with a high concentration of ketones. High blood sugar is caused mainly by sugar and carbohydrates, not fat. A ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and high in fat and it normalises the blood sugar in your body. Any required glucose in your blood, body can be produced from protein. Being in ketosis can have a huge advantage sports men and women. When your body has adapted to using fat as fuel, the muscles use fat and the brain and heart use ketones. The muscles and brain do not compete to get fuel as can happen when glucose fuelled. We have all seen the result of this competition for glucose, a phenomenon called bonking where athletes often collapsed just before reaching the finish line. Additionally the production of lactic acid is minimized when you muscles are burning fat for fuel. There are three main ketones used by the human body being acetoacetate, acetone and beta-hydroxybutyrate. Acetoacetate, is formed either from the breaking down of fatty acids in the liver or from t Continue reading >>

The Basic Ketogenic Diet
Note: Please note that if you are interested in a Ketogenic Diet used to treat Epilepsy or Pediatric Epilepsy, please start at Johns Hopkins who are the pioneers in this field. The wikipedia page for the Ketogenic Diet diet also has information on the diet as it relates to treating epilepsy. The diet below is simply for rapid and effective weight loss and uses a 1 to 1 fat to protein ratio rather than the 4 to 1 fat to combined protein and carbs ratio of the Ketogenic Diet pioneered by Johns Hopkins used to treat epilepsy. [wp_ad_camp_3] Disclaimer: I am neither a doctor nor self proclaimed nutrition expert so please consult your doctor before starting any diet or taking any action that affects your health and wellbeing. After finishing Gary Taubes latest book, which seems to have rapidly become the cornerstone of a new approach to nutrition, I’ve become very interested in the Ketogenic diet. The speed of weight loss I’ve seen is incredible and my energy level has remained high. The science behind a ketogenic diet is solidly backed up by Taubes research published in “Good Calories, Bad Calories” and “Why we get fat“. According to Taubes’ research, it may also be the only way for people who have become severely insulin resistant, to effectively lose weight. The Ketogenic diet has always lived on the fringes of diet lore and has been seen as extreme. But the reality is that the low glycemic index diet (Low GI Diet) is effective because it is close to, but not quite, a ketogenic diet. Other diets like the South Beach Diet are also only effective because of the reduction in carbs and consequently insulin levels. The science behind this diet looks solid and it is part of the massive shift in nutrition research we’ve seen in the last few years. Prominent sport Continue reading >>

What Is A Ketogenic Diet?
The ketogenic diet has been a hot topic of late. Depending on who you talk to, it is praised for its incredible weight loss results, criticised for being too restrictive, or condemned as dangerous, especially without medical supervision. As with anything related to diet and nutrition, there's a lot of conflicting (and misleading) information out there, so HuffPost Australia spoke to Clare Collins -- professor of nutrition and dietetics at the University of Newcastle, accredited practising dietitian and spokesperson for DAA -- about what the ketogenic diet is, how it works, and the pros and cons. What is a ketogenic diet? A ketogenic eating pattern is very low in carbohydrates and moderate in protein, meaning a high percentage of total energy intake comes from fat found in dairy products and meat. "A true ketogenic is one where carbohydrate intake is extremely low -- usually less than 10 percent of your total energy intake," Collins told HuffPost Australia. Getty How does a ketogenic diet work? During times of severe energy restriction (such as during fasting or starvation), prolonged intense exercise, or when carbohydrate intake is reduced to around 50 grams per day or less, the body can enter ketosis. This means that, rather than the body burning its primary fuel source, glycogen (a "complex carbohydrate, which in the human body is like petrol for a car"), the body must break down fats as its main source of fuel. "If you can flip the switch and get the body to burn predominantly fat, then you produce these thing called ketone bodies, which can appear on your urine and they also come out on your breath. They actually smell like acetone, like nail polish remover essentially," Collins said. These ketone bodies are made by the liver from fatty acids, and are used up by the Continue reading >>

Ketosis
Not to be confused with Ketoacidosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy. Ketosis is a result of metabolizing fat to provide energy. Ketosis is a nutritional process characterised by serum concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 mM, with low and stable levels of insulin and blood glucose.[1][2] It is almost always generalized with hyperketonemia, that is, an elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood throughout the body. Ketone bodies are formed by ketogenesis when liver glycogen stores are depleted (or from metabolising medium-chain triglycerides[3]). The main ketone bodies used for energy are acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate,[4] and the levels of ketone bodies are regulated mainly by insulin and glucagon.[5] Most cells in the body can use both glucose and ketone bodies for fuel, and during ketosis, free fatty acids and glucose synthesis (gluconeogenesis) fuel the remainder. Longer-term ketosis may result from fasting or staying on a low-carbohydrate diet (ketogenic diet), and deliberately induced ketosis serves as a medical intervention for various conditions, such as intractable epilepsy, and the various types of diabetes.[6] In glycolysis, higher levels of insulin promote storage of body fat and block release of fat from adipose tissues, while in ketosis, fat reserves are readily released and consumed.[5][7] For this reason, ketosis is sometimes referred to as the body's "fat burning" mode.[8] Ketosis and ketoacidosis are similar, but ketoacidosis is an acute life-threatening state requiring prompt medical intervention while ketosis can be physiological. However, there are situations (such as treatment-resistant Continue reading >>

Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol: How To Lose Fat Way Faster Than You Should
The best way to lose weight on the Bulletproof Diet is with Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. But if waiting for results just isn’t your thing, you can use this Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol – but only if you are currently significantly overweight or obese, and you have healthy, functioning kidneys and liver. However, you need to understand that your body stores toxins in fat that your liver couldn’t excrete, so when you lose weight very rapidly, those toxins are released and can make you very sick. This Bulletproof Rapid Fat Loss Protocol helps you avoid any side effects from this toxin release, so it’s important to follow the plan carefully. In a nutshell: the plan uses 6 days of ketosis – when your body burns fats for energy – followed by 1 day of carbohydrate loading along with constant toxin binding supplements to help your body get rid of the released toxins. This protocol isn’t low-calorie, and you don’t run the same risk of causing metabolic problems that you do when you follow a low-calorie diet. Being fat sucks. It’s bad for every part of your body. Your body is actually breaking down, your relationships suffer, your brain doesn’t work right, your joints hurt, you lose muscle, and you just don’t look good in the mirror. Conventional wisdom says you should start cutting fat and calories and run on a treadmill for an hour a day. Then you’re made to feel as if it’s your fault because their advice doesn’t work. After living this for years when I weighed 300 pounds, I know how frustrating this can be. Luckily, losing fat doesn’t have to be that hard. In an earlier post, you discovered how to increase muscle growth, brain function, and longevity with regular Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. Now, you can learn how to lose massive Continue reading >>

The Truth Behind The World's Most Cutting-edge, Fat-burning Performance Meal Plan: The Keto Diet
Timothy Noakes, M.D., is an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. While his name may not ring a bell here in the U.S., he’s a full-blown celebrity in his native South Africa and one of the most accomplished exercise physiologists on the planet. You can’t walk by a restaurant in Cape Town that doesn’t offer a “Noakes option”—say, an avocado stuffed with breakfast sausage and eggs, or a double cheeseburger with lettuce sans bun—and evidence of his teachings seems to be everywhere, mostly in the form of the nation’s best-known athletes, including ageless golfing legend Gary Player and eight-time Ironman World Champion Paula Newby-Fraser. In fact, Noakes’ celebrity these days is such that he’s even been pulled into South African presidential politics: To echo the country’s papers of record, “Is President Jacob Zuma’s and his wife’s dramatic weight loss a result of the Noakes Diet?” No one is sure about the president, but his wife, definitely: She’s lost 66 pounds following the Noakes plan. To high-performing athletes, Noakes preaches that the bedrock tenet of endurance athletic nutrition—that winning performance is best fueled by eating lots of carbohydrates—is simply wrong. Instead, he believes athletes can alter their bodies so that their metabolism burns fat as a primary fuel source, a physiological process known as ketosis, either from stored body fat or from the foods they eat every day. For non-athletes and anyone trying to lose weight or keep it off, Noakes’ advice is that eating a high-fat diet, with few if any refined carbs and as little sugar as possible, will switch on the same fat-burning system and keep your body lean and your weight stable without making Continue reading >>
