    Hello everyone.
    I have been on the 2:5 for about 6 months and lost about 10kg (over 20lbs) So thank you Dr Mosley!
    A lot of the reviews of the fasting lifesyle seem to suggest that it is just a way to reduce average weekly calories, but I’m sure most of you think there is more going on than simple calorie reduction.
    During the last 10 days I didn’t fast as I was on holiday traveling and found it difficult. Amazingly I did not gain any weight. This has happend on two occasions during the last 6 months.
    I think the fasting days are forcing the body to relearn how to burn fat. I’m a bit confused about the correct scientific terms for this ‘lypolysis’ is I believe the breackdown of fats (into amino acids) and ketosis the burning of
    fat as fuel.
    What ever the terminology it seems like the fasting days teach the body a long forgotten trick of switching from available glucose derived from what we just ate, to reserves stored as fat.
    I suggest that this trait applies to non fast days too, hence the lack of weigh gain during holidays.
    I used to do a bit of distance running and am quite familiar with the concept of ‘hitting the wall’. This is when a runner runs out of glucose and has to switch to fat burning (around the 18mile mark). Often that process is difficult, I have had to sit on the ground for about 3 minutes until my legs felt like they would work again.
    I’m not running now so I can’t try a quick marathon to see if the diet has helped with the switch.

    I love science and this is why I love the 5.2 as it makes so much sense.
    Your body will go into ketosis when fasting for a short time, this is probably why some people get headaches. It will also make you very thirsty and wee a lot as your body tries to flush out the by products from fat metabolism. This is a common symptom of type 1 diabetes but obviously they go into a severe more ketoacidosis due to prolonged lack of insulin and metabolism of glucose and start burning muscle for fuel.
    It’s quite complicated stuff but if you google fasting ketosis there’s loads of interesting info online. Michaels book was lacking in any science stuff which is a shame as I think people are interested.
    I know that athletes or very fit people are more efficient at burning fat as they are used to it so yes I think the 5.2 does reset the metabolism in a similar way.
    I have managed to this this after years of cycling and find I can ride for a few hours on an empty stomach. Always need coffee though !!!

    Hey Martin!
    I’m also very interested in ketosis. I tried it out a few weeks ago and didn’t eat any carbs for 1,5 week. I lost quite some weight, but felt like I couldn’t sustain it – I started feeling really weak, dizzy, couldn’t walk straight some days and all in all didn’t get the energy boosts some people boast about.
    So now I just cut carbs on my fast days and allow myself fruit and yoghurt on normal days – still prefer not to eat rice, noodles, bread and potatoes though. Sometimes a baked good or chocolate pudding as a treat, but not regularly. I do think this really contributes to my quicker than average weightloss (7kg in 3 weeks, of which most during that first 1,5 week).
    I’ve also started working out fasted. I do this after work before my only meal of the day, so after fasting for over 20 hours. I do HIIT (Insanity), which combines cardio and strength through bodyweight exercises. So far my results have been worse than when I did the program before when eating regularly, but I’m waiting to see how it goes in two weeks when I do my second fit test. My body is most likely also learning how to switch to burning fat efficiently.
    What you said about going on a holiday, this reminded me of the “carb loaders” I know. They basically cut carbs during the week, then they “carbload” on Saturday – eating everything from pizza to ribs to whatever they want. They say that it doesn’t cause them to gain weight, because the body is still in fat burning mode and the glucose from the carbs goes straight to the muscles, giving the muscles the strength to keep working out through the next week. Hence carb ‘loading’. These people are basically in ketosis 3 days a week (it usually takes the body about 3 days to go into full ketosis).
    These are all bodybuilder types though, who do mostly strength training so it doesn’t really sound like a great idea for me. I wanna be lean, not buff.

Respiratory Acidosis

Respiratory acidosis is a medical emergency in which decreased ventilation (hypoventilation) increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood and decreases the blood's pH (a condition generally called acidosis). Carbon dioxide is produced continuously as the body's cells respire, and this CO2 will accumulate rapidly if the lungs do not adequately expel it through alveolar ventilation. Alveolar hypoventilation thus leads to an increased PaCO2 (a condition called hypercapnia). The increase in PaCO2 in turn decreases the HCO3−/PaCO2 ratio and decreases pH. Terminology[edit] Acidosis refers to disorders that lower cell/tissue pH to < 7.35. Acidemia refers to an arterial pH < 7.36.[1] Types of respiratory acidosis[edit] Respiratory acidosis can be acute or chronic.     My boyfriend suffers from depression and since starting keto a couple of days ago he's been really sensitive. He's seemed a bit withdrawn, and has said that everything's been making him feel really upset. He looked like he almost burst into tears when we were at the vet today and a woman said she was having her dog put down. He couldn't be in there any more and had to go and wait in the car.
    I'd like to hear from other ketoers who suffer from depression. Has keto had an impact on your depression? Improvement? Worsening? No change? Did you go through some tough days when first entering ketosis?

    EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone who has replied, it's been a big help! It's good to see that in the long run people have experienced more positive rather than negative effects. I'll encourage my boyfriend to keep going and get him some supplements to counter any deficiencies. Hopefully he'll be through the worst of it soon!

    You're only a couple of days into a completely different diet -- that can have a huge effect on your mood, whether depressed or not. I felt awful for the first week or so, but then I felt better. Much better. Far less bad days, and a hell of a lot more normal ones. You both just need to wait this part out, make sure you stay hydrated, stay away from tempting 'sad food' and treat yourselves to some luxurious steak. Once your energy levels work themselves out, he'll feel a whole lot better. :)

    Hey man, thanks so much for your comment here- it's the most relevant to my situation I've found on the internet.
    I am about 2 weeks into this keto diet, and I'm feeling rough. I am so depressed, having the crazy vivid dreams, no cravings for carbs just a huge appetite for all my keto foods. Like, I can still eat all day. However, I also just quit smoking week after being a serious pothead. There is a pattern to stopping getting high- initially I lose my appetite completely and I get the vivid dreams (sleep is exhausting!), but then my appetite comes back in full force almost to make up for the lack of calories I got during the 5 or so days of no appetite. So perhaps that's why I am so hungry, despite being good about this keto diet?
    I have not lost any weight at all, think I've gained some, because I have been eating so much. I also just moved to Singapore (hence the quitting smoking weed) and I don't have a ton of friends yet so I have spent a lot of time cooking/food shopping/focusing my life of keto...and eating!
    I don't feel "brain fog" so much, I guess I'm a bit more tired or off-feeling but mostly I am sad. Like, super emotional, want to cry over everything. "Unstable mindset" sums it up well. I haven't found a pharmacy that carries keto stix so I don't even know if I am in ketosis, I don't have most of the "symptoms" but I've been pretty strict about it...
    There isn't really any point to this at all and sorry for choosing you to vent to, but you seem like the only person on the internet going through something similar. I'm struggling, not with sticking to the keto diet, but with not stuffing my face and crying all day. There is a lot going on in my life at the moment, considering I just moved across the planet. Thanks for listening.
    Anyway this was 3 months ago, hows it going? Have you been sticking with it? Do you feel better? Is your mental environment more stable? Have the dreams gone away, or is this just something that happens when you sleep that I didn't know about because I've been high for a decade?

    Any trace coloring on the sticks is fine...if you are in ketosis you are in ketosis....the darker shades just mean you either arent very hydrated or your body is not burning all your ketones for fuel and has alot excess....you dont even really have to test positive on those things to be in ketosis b/c technically you could be using all your ketones for energy
    I wouldnt rely on them very much after you get used to how your body feels in ketosis

    Yeah, i cant really tell im in ketosis physically by symptoms, i never have energy, i dont have anemia or anything not sure, i think a sleeping disorder, i definitely have metallic taste and drink alot of water though.
