I used to be a strict vegan, now I have been on a ketogenic diet for over a year and still have vegan friends that I like to share food with. The short answer is yes. You do not have to be 0 carb to get into ketosis, and for most people the fiber component of carbs does not have any impact. The question is, can you get enough fat and limit the carbs that sneak in from common vegan foods. These are variables that change with everyone, there is no fixed X grams of carbs that is the proper upper limit for all people. I average around 30 grams of net carbs, not counting fiber, but some days I will have over 100 grams and it doesn't make much difference (as long as it wasn't solid sugar all at once). It is common for me to make avocados, coconut, almonds, macadamia nuts, olives, flax crackers, chia seeds, and salads with various oils as either all or part of my meals and I stay in ketosis pretty much all the time. This said, your options ARE limited, and you do have to be careful. Many hummus brands and nut butters contain additional carbs and sugars, and most pre-packaged vegan foods are not low carb. There is also a social component to concider. If you live in area with lots of wonderful vegan restaurants and cafes, it can be very tempting to order really delicious but really carby food there when dining with vegan friends. I have found it very rare for a vegan restaurant to have high fat / low carb options. It is much easier for an ovo-lacto vegetarian, since they can have butter and/or eggs, which are powerful tools to most keto dieters. I’ve gotten a crazy number of requests do this Pruvit Keto/OS review. Keto/OS is a new exogenous ketone supplement that people are using to lose weight, among other things. I found very little in terms of research on exogenous ketones in humans. Exogenous ketones have been studied a bit in rats, and no one has studied them in terms of weight loss in people or in rodents. The product Keto/OS has no research behind it either, so I decided to bite the bullet and put myself on it for a week to see what would happen. I hate using small studies as proof for anything, but in this case, I had no choice. It was totally an n=1. I also hate drinking disgusting things, but again, in this case I had no choice. Sigh. Before I talk about how that all went, let’s chat about ketones and how they work in your body. What are ketones? Ketones are the byproduct of fat metabolism. When you deprive your body of it’s favorite source of energy – glucose – it starts burning your fat for fuel. That’s the premise of the ketogenic diet: burn fat, use the ketones that result as energy.
