What Colour Should Ketostix Be When In Ketosis

Ketosis – Are You “looking For Purple”?

Two questions I’m asked a great deal are about ketosis. “What colour am I aiming at on the “Ketostix (TM)” testing strips? Where do I get them?” My answers are always this: “Benign Dietary Ketosis” as a concept was championed by Dr Robert Atkins when he published the first version of his plan in 1972. He mentions that you should measure your excreted ketones via urinalysis and be looking for a purple result. Where to get Ketone Urinalysis sticks Either, via Amazon (pretty much the easiest option) or at the Pharmacy counter of any dispensing Chemist. They are a “P” grade medicine, so you have to ask for them. However, being in ketosis is like being pregnant. You either are, or you aren’t. The colour is irrelevant, any shade of Pink/Purple will do. In fact, purple may well be a sign that you are pushing too hard. You may be eating too few vegetable based carbs. Purple means that you are dumping a great deal of excess ketones into urine, rather than burning them. If you are “purple” but find that you are not dropping fat, your body may well be fighting against your mind’s want to drop your excess fat. Your body wants to preserve its homoeostasis and keep you Continue reading >>

    Hey Guys,
I realize I really have no clue what exactly is going on with ketosis or some of the diet in general, so any help in shedding light on it would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to answer one or any of the following questions:
    1) I always thought ketosis occurred when one severely restricts carb intake, but I also know ketosis is the result of intermittent fasting. Does it happen under both situations independently, or must one both restrict carbs plus incorporate intermittent fasting to enter Ketosis?
    2) How quickly should one be able to enter ketosis? When not in ketosis, does this mean the body is storing fat and burning glucose?
    3) If while in ketosis the body is burning fat for fuel, wouldn't a high fat diet make available so much dietary fat that the body never needs to burn already stored fat for energy?
    4) What color should be targeted when using Ketostix, as I tend to get between small and medium after a week of less than 30 carbs daily. When is the best time of day to test with ketostix?
    5) When eating too many carbs to enter ketosis, does this mean that the body will naturally burn glucose before burning any fat? Is dietary fat stored when not in ketosis?
    6) If one eats regularly and stays bulletproof, but does not use intermittent fasting, does this mean the body does not enter ketosis and therefore the body never starts burning fat for energy, but instead stores eat? If not - what happens to all the dietary fat in the BP diet when not in ketosis?
    7) Is it safe for a friend who is not on the BP diet to consume high fat BP foods like BP Ice Cream - or will that lead to more fat storage than if they were to just eat regular, lower fat, higher sugar ice cream?
I've been following and tweaking the diet for myself, but realize I really don't know what happens and why, so thanks in advance for all your help!

    1) I believe being in ketosis and IF are independent events. You can be in ketosis without IF'ing (by being low carb) and you can IF but not be in Ketosis (high carb when not fasting)
    7) I've read that you ought to give your friend some kind of supplement to aid with the fat digestion with 'Get Some' ice cream. A long timer on the forum would have to expand on this with the exact supplement/ingredient...
I'm not so sure about the rest as I'm also at the beginning of my Bulletproof journey =D

Oh yea, now that you mention it, I do recall hearing Dave talk somewhere about normal diet people needing to somehow supplement the high fat consumption.
I'm not so sure about #1, as I remember hearing Dave talk about why the consumption of BP Coffee doesn't break the ketosis because of the high MCT, but possibly other foods, even eggs and beef might not work in the same way, since the liver would still be required to start working again? I could be way off, but if someone can remain in ketosis even while eating BP food very often, what would the point be of fasting? Furthermore, I've noticed in myself that even on a strict BP diet, without intermittent fasting, I tend to gain weight slowly, which makes no sense if I'm in fat burning mode...unless it has to do with my question #3 above, and you eat more fat than the body can burn?

Someone Tell Me The Truth About Ketosis

Is it true or isn't it true that the color of the strips doesn't matter? I realize the blood test way is the most accurate but holy crap, they are way out of my budget. Should I consider myself in trouble if the sticks read "trace"? If I don't feel tired then isn't that evidence that I am making sufficient ketones, i.e. my glycogen stores are empty and I'm using ketones for energy? My friend says that if it's purple, that means your body is burning more fat. I repeat what I heard (I need to personally research this) that it doesn't matter what color it is as long as it's registering at least trace. How do get a good understanding of the fundamentals of ketosis? P.S. I am losing 2 lbs weekly and have lots of energy, yet am rarely purple. Continue reading >>

This is my 13th day on the ketogenic diet. I bought ketone test strips to test my urine. I've been testing a few times a day and been in the low range. This morning I've tested twice and it says "Large" and correlates with the "8 mmol/L" color on the test strips. I've been "high fat, moderate whole foods carbs" for months, if not longer. I'm not diabetic but have a glucometer to test for blood sugar spikes to know what foods to avoid. My blood sugars have been 60-90s consistently. Is there any concern about spilling too many ketones? Educate me please!!

  2. Jason_v

Just due to the nature of the presence of the 3 different versions of circulating ketones, some will always spill over to the urine. how detectable they are will depend on your hydration level more than anything else. So no there is no concern, which is good because you can't do anything about it anyway. If you are producing ketones, some will show up in the urine:period. if you are hyper hydrated you won't see many, if you are dehydrated you will see dark purple. Exercise tends to reduce the amount of ketones in the urine, in my experience. There is a falsehood that circulates that your body "learns" to use ketones more effectively thus "spilling less" into the urine but that's not technically correct. Although the use of ketones by different tissues can be up regulated (made more efficient depending on demand) there will always be some in the urine if you are producing them at all.

  3. ketohealthclub

I'd love to read the data explaining that. Do you have any links? I've definitely read the opposite: that over time your body wastes fewer ketones, which renders the ketostix pretty useless after a few weeks.

Any trace coloring on the sticks is fine...if you are in ketosis you are in ketosis....the darker shades just mean you either arent very hydrated or your body is not burning all your ketones for fuel and has alot excess....you dont even really have to test positive on those things to be in ketosis b/c technically you could be using all your ketones for energy
I wouldnt rely on them very much after you get used to how your body feels in ketosis
