Should Endurance Athletes Go Keto? Ketosis And Ketogenic Diets For Endurance Athletes

When it comes to weight loss and endurance performance, dietary ketosis is the strategy everyone is asking about this year. On the surface, ketosis or a ketogenic diet offers everything an endurance athlete could dream of: endless energy, freedom from bonking, and an efficient pathway to weight loss. The diet has been all over mainstream magazines, it’s the subject of several new books, and the supplement companies have already jumped in with new products and a ton of marketing dollars. So, is it time for cyclists, triathletes, and runners to go Keto? First, a refresher course on what a ketogenic diet is. To achieve dietary or nutritional ketosis you need to severely restrict carbohydrate intake (fewer than 50 grams of CHO/day) so the body transitions to using ketones for fueling muscles and the brain. Ketones are produced from fat, which is why nutritional ketosis is so appealing to sedentary people as a weight loss solution. It’s appealing to athletes because we have a virtually unlimited reserve of fat calories to pull from but can only store 1600-2000 calories worth of carbohydrate in muscles, blood, and the liver. An athlete fueled by ketones would be theoretically “bonk-proof”, since bonking is the result of running low on blood glucose. [blog_promo promo_categories=”coaching” ids=”” /] Dietary ketosis for athletes is one of the most hotly contested subjects right now. Proponents point to the metabolic advantage of relying on fat instead of carbohydrate, and critics point out the physiological limitations of eliminating carbohydrate as a fuel for performance. You’ll find bias in both groups, either because scientists and coaches (including me) have been in the high-carbohydrate camp for many years, or because there’s a lot of money to be made b Continue reading >>

7 Reasons You’re Not Getting The Most From A Ketogenic Diet

7 Reasons You’re Not Getting The Most From A Ketogenic Diet

All fats aren’t created equal. They may share the same caloric values at 9 Kcal/gram, but their functional roles can differ quite significantly. For starters their structural conformations differ, which affect the way they behave in your body. Saturated fats for example are quite rigid structures, and form part of the membranes of your cells. So do polyunsaturated fats, but they tend to be more fluid. Striking a balance between these fats in your diet is important for cell signalling and communication, which can ultimately affect metabolic function at a larger level – say, like in Type II Diabetes. Its important to note that eating a lot of these foods (as well as a lot of meat, eggs and dairy) also provide a generous dose of Omega-6 (ω6) Fatty Acids. Whilst these are essential, in excess they can be pro-inflammatory. They also share the same set of enzymes needed to convert Omega 3 (ω3) Fatty Acids into their anti-inflammatory derivatives. Heavy consumption of ω6 can reduce the conversion of ω3’s. They act like a see saw, and require balance. So if your goal with a ketogenic diet is to tackle inflammation, be mindful of ω6 consumption. Secondly, fats differ in their number of carbon atoms, which ultimately determines the length of their chains. You’ve probably heard of MCT’s I’m sure, and that they are a great source of fuel. Thats because of their 6-10 carbon chain lengths. They require no assistance in crossing from the intestine into circulation and diffuse rapidly across its membrane. They are also processed through the liver, which is basically a shortcut compared to how long and short chain triglycerides enter the bloodstream (via the lymphatic system). When it comes to oxidation (burning) they are the first ones to the mitochondria, and need no Continue reading >>

A Ketogenic Diet To Lose Weight And Fight Disease

A Ketogenic Diet To Lose Weight And Fight Disease

Obesity and metabolic diseases have become the world's biggest health problems. In fact, at least 2.8 million adults die from obesity-related causes each year (1). Metabolic syndrome affects over 50 million people in the US, and can lead to a variety of health problems (2, 3, 4). To combat this, many diets have emerged, few of which are actually backed by research (5). The benefits of the ketogenic diet, on the other hand, are well-supported by science (6, 7). This article explains how a ketogenic diet can help you lose weight and fight metabolic disease. A ketogenic diet is high in fat, moderate in protein and extremely low in carbs (8). As carbs are reduced and fat is increased, the body enters a metabolic state called ketosis. Then the body starts turning fats into ketones, which are molecules that can supply energy for the brain (9, 10). After a few days or weeks on such a diet, the body and brain become very efficient at burning fat and ketones for fuel instead of carbs. The ketogenic diet also lowers insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, are two of the main reasons this diet has so many health benefits (9, 11, 12, 13, 14). Staple foods on a ketogenic diet include meat, fish, butter, eggs, cheese, heavy cream, oils, nuts, avocados, seeds and low-carb vegetables. In contrast, nearly all carb sources are eliminated, including grains, rice, beans, potatoes, sweets, milk, cereals, fruits and even some higher-carb vegetables. A ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein and low-carb diet. It primarily works by lowering insulin levels, producing ketones and increasing fat burning. There is strong evidence that ketogenic diets are very effective for weight loss (15). They can help you lose fat, preserve muscle mass and improve many markers of disease Continue reading >>

Mistakes That Keto-warriors Commonly Make (fats, Alcohol, And Nutrient Deficiency)

Mistakes That Keto-warriors Commonly Make (fats, Alcohol, And Nutrient Deficiency)

Intro Update May 2017: My current thoughts are not in line with this post. Read more here. It’s been little over a year since I embarked on my keto lifestyle. The nutritional approach is only a small (but important) part of my life optimization strategy. I’ve been through a lot of trial and error while trying to improve my macro partitioning. If it weren’t for the research and the books that I read throughout, I’d still be stuck in the mud. While being active on many FB groups and spamming whenever I post something new on my blog here :), I’ve seen that many people want to rush into getting results, want quick fixes, shortcuts, which gets them into nothing but trouble. So, let me try and give you my perspective on a few of the common mistakes that I see. Too much fat, too much food, poor nutrition I believe (please do not assume I generalize) eating high-fat does not mean consuming 3,000 – 10,000 kcals per day out of which 85% or more should come from fat. Doing so will lead to a possible nutrient deficient state. I tried eating 3,000+ kcals the first few days to weeks after starting the keto journey in Oct. 2013. I couldn’t do it for the long-term, especially because I was forcing myself to over-consume food. It did not feel normal or natural. I think that eating keto-friendly foods should not rely upon consuming entire sticks of butter or pouring all sorts of oils and butter into your coffee. That’s very energy rich, nutrient poor. Your body can thrive on a very-high-fat-very-low-carb diet with literally consumption of < 10g of carbohydrates per day. While releasing fats from the adipose tissue and hydrolyzing TAGs, your body can create most of its essential supply of vitamins and minerals (that’s what happens in long-term starvation too). But, for G Continue reading >>

Why Ketosis Isn’t Healthy

Why Ketosis Isn’t Healthy

Without a doubt, the biggest health trend of 2017 is the ketogenic diet. Everyone is looking how to get “keto” for magical health benefits, but I’m here to tell you something different. Ketosis is not healthy. That’s right, I said it. Elevated ketone levels do not equal elevated health levels. A ketogenic diet certainly can be an incredible way of eating to reduce inflammation, improve energy, regulate metabolism, lose fat, and more. However, just because you’re in a state of ketosis, doesn’t mean you’re healthy. I see this all the time. People switch to a ketogenic diet, get a few immediate results, then plateau or eventually feel worse. What happened? Well, they ignored everything else they need to do in their life to promote health besides limiting carbohydrates. This is just one tiny part of the whole. Being in a state of ketosis isn’t a magic bullet. It can be a helpful tool and addition, but it is just one component. If you switched from a wood burning stove for heat (carbs) to an energy efficient solar panel system (ketones) but your house is still a dilapidated dumpster fire with no plumbing or walls, you’re not going to notice much of a difference living in it. Ketosis can be a great tool to help you achieve better health, but it’s not a shortcut. Want to have a ketogenic be part of a well-rounded approach to achieve the health you want? See where you stack up below for the main reasons people miss the mark on integrating ketosis in their life to improve their health. Not eating a healthy diet is just one of the many keto mistakes people make that prevent weight loss and kick you out of ketosis. Click here to find out if you’re making any of these mistakes that’ll prevent you from losing fat. Food Quality Over Quantity At this point, I Continue reading >>

Filling a notebook with your carb intake on a daily basis is not the only way to achieve success on a ketonic diet. In fact, getting into ketosis can really be very tricky and a downright difficult process. A Ketogenic Diet forces your body to burn stored fats as energy. By eating food with low amount of carbs and a high amount of fat, your body will eventually get into a state of ketosis which can help you lose weight and can also improve brain function. With the growing popularity of the Ketogenic Diet, there is also a boom in Ketogenic Supplements. But how do you know which one is for you? How much will it cost? Are there any side effects in taking keto supplements? Knowing what the best keto supplement is also means knowing what kind of keto dieter you are. There are three main types of Keto Diets: Standard, Targeted, Cyclical, and High-Protein. The main difference lies in the amount of carbs you target to take on a daily basis. Standard Ketogenic Diet (SKD) is the most common type of keto diet and it is most recommended to those who are less active and want to lose weight. This means that you are taking about 20-50 grams of carbs daily. However, SKD allows the intake of an average amount of protein but relies on a heavy fat intake. So to put it mathematically, that would be 5% carbs, 20% protein, and 75% fat. Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) refers to a varied carb intake within a week or a cycle. For example, you go on a 5-day low carb keto diet and then eat a normal amount of high carb for two days. The days vary depending on your activity levels and what you are trying to achieve. This approach is used frequently by bodybuilders and is not recommended for beginners. Targeted Ketogenic Diet (TKD) is for people that are engaged in high intensity activities and take c Continue reading >>

The Truth Behind The World's Most Cutting-edge, Fat-burning Performance Meal Plan: The Keto Diet

The Truth Behind The World's Most Cutting-edge, Fat-burning Performance Meal Plan: The Keto Diet

Timothy Noakes, M.D., is an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. While his name may not ring a bell here in the U.S., he’s a full-blown celebrity in his native South Africa and one of the most accomplished exercise physiologists on the planet. You can’t walk by a restaurant in Cape Town that doesn’t offer a “Noakes option”—say, an avocado stuffed with breakfast sausage and eggs, or a double cheeseburger with lettuce sans bun—and evidence of his teachings seems to be everywhere, mostly in the form of the nation’s best-known athletes, including ageless golfing legend Gary Player and eight-time Ironman World Champion Paula Newby-Fraser. In fact, Noakes’ celebrity these days is such that he’s even been pulled into South African presidential politics: To echo the country’s papers of record, “Is President Jacob Zuma’s and his wife’s dramatic weight loss a result of the Noakes Diet?” No one is sure about the president, but his wife, definitely: She’s lost 66 pounds following the Noakes plan. To high-performing athletes, Noakes preaches that the bedrock tenet of endurance athletic nutrition—that winning performance is best fueled by eating lots of carbohydrates—is simply wrong. Instead, he believes athletes can alter their bodies so that their metabolism burns fat as a primary fuel source, a physiological process known as ketosis, either from stored body fat or from the foods they eat every day. For non-athletes and anyone trying to lose weight or keep it off, Noakes’ advice is that eating a high-fat diet, with few if any refined carbs and as little sugar as possible, will switch on the same fat-burning system and keep your body lean and your weight stable without making Continue reading >>

Low carbers know ketosis is the superhero of fat-burning. But what is ketosis? And how do you get into ketosis quickly? Keto FAQs and why it makes a difference in fat loss. 6 techniques to get into ketosis fast 3-Day rapid reach ketosis technique Try a few rapid keto techniques and eat specific low carb keto foods. Our quick start guide covers everything you need to reach ketosis fast. If carbs are limited to small amounts in your diet, your body relies on fat for energy. When you reach ketosis, fat burns rapidly and muscle tissue is spared. Why Does Keto Burn Fat Faster? To get into ketosis you’ll avoid sugar, leading to low insulin levels. Low insulin curbs hunger and accelerates fat-burning. Metabolizing fat and producing ketones burns more energy than metabolizing carbs. The result is a much higher calorie burn. How Do I Reach Ketosis? Ketosis happens when carbs are very low – usually when eating 20 to 50 grams of net carbs or less per day. (Carb grams from fiber are NOT counted in daily totals.) Everyone is different. Some low carbers must eat very low carb to reach ketosis. Typical Keto Ratio Getting into ketosis requires eating meals that are high in healthy fats and low in carbs. Protein grams should not exceed 20 % of total daily calories. Keto Calculator This free online keto calculator determines your ideal nutrient ratio for weight loss or maintenance during ketosis. The keto calculator recommends the optimum daily calories, fat, carb and protein amounts to help you get into ketosis – and meet your weight loss goal. Ketogenetic Dieting Aids Look Too Good To Be True Because They Are

Ketogenetic Dieting Aids Look Too Good To Be True Because They Are

What happens when a Silicon Valley startup markets a mysterious drink with nonspecific health claims, couched in the aesthetic of a tech product launch? A disruptive twist to decades-old strategies used by the supplement industry to deceive consumers. The latest example is perhaps the most egregious. HVMN Ketone claims to be a performance-enhancing beverage that alters metabolism by flooding the bloodstream with a molecule called D-β-hydroxybutyrate(D-βHB). Chances are you’re familiar with someone who’s tried out the ketogenic diet, but HVMN promises you can achieve ketosis without dieting. However, the benefits of calorie restriction and exercise can’t be reduced down to a double-shot of D-βHB. “HVMN Ketone is the result of 10+ years of research and $60 million in funding,” states HVMN’s website. But time and money simply aren’t surrogates for validated and reproducible clinical results. Drinking ketones will certainly boost levels of ketone bodies in the blood; however, the actual effects of HVMN Ketone are fleeting, underwhelming, and embellished by the company. Because D-βHB is “generally recognized as safe,” HVMN can sell Ketone as a “foodstuff” with little or no evidence of athletic or cognitive benefit to consumers. A $33 bad taste And that’s a shame, because many people will be tricked into shelling out $33 per bottle, only to be left with a bad taste in their mouth and weight loss in their wallet. To contextualize that indictment, consider whence the emergence of low-carb and ketogenic diet trends evolved. Over the past 30 years, America’s obesity rate ballooned from about a sixth to over a third of the population. Total caloric consumption per person increased in people of all BMIs, with a macronutrient distribution shifting to pr Continue reading >>

How To Get Back Into Ketosis After Binging On Holiday Carbs

How To Get Back Into Ketosis After Binging On Holiday Carbs

With Christmas and New Years being a time filled with a lots of bread, pasta, cookies, beer, and everyone’s favorite dish, it’s going to be very hard to stick to a ketogenic diet. While it’s completely possible to make keto-approved foods or to stick to the protein and zero carb snacks that you might have, it’s a little unrealistic. Especially if you’re going to a event or a family party, with social pressure not being on your side – there’s a very good chance you’re going to end up eating carbs. Recently, during Christmas, I probably ate at LEAST 400 grams of carbs. Yes, might sound like overkill for some of you but the fact of the matter is, besides the holidays – I’m ALWAYS in ketosis and I’m always a low body fat percentage. This means my body can process carbohydrates quite well. This also means I can get back into ketosis very quickly. The more you practice the ketogenic lifestyle, the easier it is for your body to enter a state of ketosis after being knocked out of it. Anyways, I ate tons of pasta, rice, cake, cookies, a giant italian sub, and drank some beer. The day after, I followed the workout protocol I am about to give you and I was already back to burning ketones the day after. Keep in mind, it might take you just a little longer than me but, there is no doubt in my mind that by following what I am about to tell you, it will be the fastest way for you to get back into ketosis and start burning fats for fuel. Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself First off, eating a ketogenic lifestyle is exactly what it sounds like – it’s a lifestyle. There’s going to be times where you are 100% ketogenic all the time and feeling great – then there’s going to be times where all you want to do is eat a bowl of pasta or a sandwich. Here’s the thin Continue reading >>

Four New, Cutting-edge Ways To Easily Shift Your Body Into Fat-burning Mode & Ketosis.

Four New, Cutting-edge Ways To Easily Shift Your Body Into Fat-burning Mode & Ketosis.

Great article. You actually answered my question as to the ratio of the 3 BHB salts which is quite helpful for me. For me, I had Keto O/S and found it quite good – my favorite was the chocolate swirl. But it was and is very expensive. Only 15-20 servings and would break the bank. So I turned to KetoCaNa and I’ve tried two flavours. Both of them were so salty that I almost threw up every time. Like flavoured sea water. Also only 15 serving per bottle. Then I turned to Ketond which is okay – Tigers Blood and Caramel Macchiato. What I like about Ketond is that it has a full 30 servings and is very transparent with it’s ingredients. It’s also the same price as Keto OS but you get 30 servings. But still, not the best taste. So in the end, I ordered 1kg of pure BHB Magnesium from a supplier in China and I will be developing my own Ketone product with 30 servings as a lower price than all the competitors, and with more Magnesium, and Calcium in it than Sodium so that it tastes the best and actually helps with weight loss (which Magnesium is proven to do at the right amount). What the companies don’t tell you is that actually Sodium BHB is the cheapest, then Calcium BHB and then Magnesium BHB to source so I would be interested in knowing if what you wrote is actually true or just an excuse to make the product cheaper. Probably a mix of both. So I have 2 questions Ben: 1. If you had to split the 11.7g of BHB into Sodium, Ca, and Mg, what ratio would you do for the best health results and potential weight loss? The current products on the market are about an 80/12/8 split. I would think it should be the other way around. 2. When I develop my own product and sell it, would you be up for sampling it and reviewing it on your website here? What flavours do you like/would Continue reading >>
