Obesity And Fitness Are Revolutionized By Reddit, Not Doctors

Obesity And Fitness Are Revolutionized By Reddit, Not Doctors

From reading the article I get the impression that the author isn't that familiar with the scientific literature at all. The evidence he presents against the usefulness of cardio for weight loss compares a group of weightlifters against a group of runners who ran only 20km per week and they still lost marginally more weight than the weightlifters! Cardio really should be a minimum of an hour per day, at least 5 days a week if weight control is the goal. Health benefits accrue much sooner, though. Science certainly hasn't weighed in on favor of high protein diets or abandoning cardio unless you cherry pick specific smaller studies to get what you're looking for. On the other hand there are HUGE studies supporting cardio, both for weight loss and for health. I've written about this many times before on HN: According to the 32,000 person study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1999), "fit persons with any combination of smoking, elevated blood pressure, or elevated cholesterol level had lower adjusted death rates than low-fit persons with none of these characteristics". The same study found that aerobic fitness had a far more important impact on longevity than obesity did. Fantastic Voyage, Kurzweil and Grossman, Chapter 22. Here's a report on a study that monitored over 100,000 people: Paul Williams, Ph.D., author of the study, found that men who ran two or more marathons per year were 41 percent less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, 32 percent less likely to have high cholesterol, and 87 percent less likely to be diabetic than non-marathoners. Those who ran only one marathon every two to five years also had significantly lower risk for these conditions than non-marathoners. The benefits of running marathons were largely independent of total number Continue reading >>

The Diet Trend Reddit Is Obsessed With (and Whether It Will Work For You)

The Diet Trend Reddit Is Obsessed With (and Whether It Will Work For You)

If we know anything about dieting and losing weight it’s that though the method is extremely simple (more calories out than calories in), the execution can be incredibly difficult. So difficult, that on the extreme high end, some studies have shown that 95% of diets fail. This is true in other areas of life, to be sure. What we know we should do for ourselves is simple: exercise every day, complete all the tasks at our jobs, save money instead of spending it, quit smoking or drinking to excess — we know all the right things to do, the knowledge we lack is how to get ourselves to take the right actions. To this end, a community on Reddit has become more and more popular by working through a diet that claims to work not just because it accomplishes the simple goal every diet accomplishes (helping people eat less calories than their body expends, resulting in weight loss) but because it helps people feel satisfied enough with what their eating that they can actually stick to it. It’s called Keto and it’s basically a high fat, low carb diet. What excites most people about this is that it’s a diet you can eat bacon on. Yup. Bacon. Advocates of the diet say that by strictly avoiding carbs (keeping their intake between 0-50g per day), they force the body to burn fat for energy rather than it’s preferred source of energy, glucose. Also, because you are not spiking your insulin levels with carbohydrates, you will crave less food. Some Reddit users have seen big progress using keto, like this girl: And this couple: Many people say the difference between keto and other weight loss strategies they’ve tried is that they’re able to keep up with the diet because of the satisfying meals they can make. For instance, look at this delicious keto meal: And keto calzones And Continue reading >>

Exclusive: New 'skinny' Pill Takes Country By Storm. A Mother From Usa Broke The World Record And Lost 30.7 Lb In 4 Weeks !

(Healthy Mum Daily) - For the past three months our readers have been going crazy over 2 internet products that are helping women in USA and across the world to lose weight. This revolutionary system, called by some "The Holy Grail of Weight Loss" has been featured on countless popular TV shows, proven to be safe for ongoing use and best of all - it's totally affordable for anyone. Waves of celebrities have lost a significant amount of body fat with just these diet cleanses. The combined effect is clinically proven to not just rapidly burn fat off your physique but as importantly, to flush out all the destructive toxins in your body and increase your metabolism, all without harming your immune system. As we have often reported when researching the latest diet trends, losing weight often feels like an impossible challenge and all too frequently the results are painfully disappointing. However, after an exhaustive research effort including interviewing actual dieters using this exact system, we're more than excited about this breakthrough. Keep reading and you'll find out why we created this special report. The reason why most diets fail, in our opinion, is that they impose unrealistic restrictions on how you live your life. Some advocate eating tons of protein while others emphasize restricting carbohydrates. In either case, you're left with having to make rather drastic changes to the types of food you eat and when you eat it. In this special report, we take an in-depth look at an emerging and promising weight loss trend that we believe is a game changer, that won't require time in the gym or cutting your calories... and best of all it won't break the bank. You may have heard of the enormously popular Garcinia Cambogia in the news. It is a chemical from Garcinia Cambogi Continue reading >>

My Transformation: How I Lost 66 Pounds And Gained A 6 Pack In 8 Months.

My Transformation: How I Lost 66 Pounds And Gained A 6 Pack In 8 Months.

On June 2016, I was 23 years old, 5' 9" and weighed 95kg. I knew I'd let go of myself. I was a year and a half out of college, and I had no idea how to adult. Putting my professional life first was the only way I knew how to function, but when the fixed duration problem sets of college times became an infinite stream of work, I kept pushing myself further and further. The longer I worked, the more I needed to relax in my downtime. As someone who's always found comfort in friends and food, it was no surprise that it had come to a point where midnight department store runs to pick up chocolates and junk food had become a daily fixture. As the weeks ticked on, so did the pounds. When the snow started melting, the thick peacoats of a New York City winter couldn't disguise my ignorance any more. I had to do something about it. In the next 8 months, I lost 30kg (66lbs) and became the fittest I've ever been. I measured in at 8% body fat and had a 6 pack for the first time in my life. Using data and YouTube videos to guide me, I changed the way I ate and started training while trying to balance a fair share of fun and a full-time job. All body fat measurements are taken on a bioelectrical impedance scale and are likely inaccurate. Transformation In the beginning, my goal was to religiously do a 12 week training program. I had a fixed end date in mind, and I'd hit the gym and eat correctly until that date. By the time I'd reached that date, I began enjoying the change, Continue reading >>

Top 15 Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight On A Low-carb Diet

Top 15 Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight On A Low-carb Diet

Weight loss isn’t a linear process. If you weigh yourself every day, then there will be days where the scale goes down, other days where it goes up. It doesn’t mean that the diet isn’t working, as long as the general trend is going downwards. Many people lose a lot of weight in the first week of low-carbing, but it is mostly water weight. Weight loss will slow down significantly after that initial phase. Of course, losing weight is not the same as losing fat. It is possible, especially if you’re new to weight lifting, that you are gaining muscle at the same time that you’re losing fat. To make sure that you’re losing, use something other than just the scale (which is a big, fat liar). Use a measuring tape to measure your waist circumference and have your body fat percentage measured every month or so. Also, take pictures. Take note of how your clothes fit. If you’re looking thinner and your clothes are looser, then you ARE losing fat no matter what the scale says. Bottom Line: Weight loss isn’t linear and there’s a lot more to weight than just body fat. Be patient and use other ways of measuring than just the scale. Some people are more carb sensitive than others. If you’re eating low-carb and your weight starts to plateau, then you may want to cut back on carbs even further. In that case, go under 50 grams of carbs per day. When you go under 50 grams per day then you’re going to have to eliminate most fruits from your diet, although you can have berries in small amounts. If that doesn’t work either, going under 20 grams temporarily can work… eating just protein, healthy fats and leafy green vegetables. To make sure that you’re really eating low-carb, create a free account on Fitday and log your food intake for a while. Bottom Line: If you ar Continue reading >>

Watch A Woman Lose 88 Pounds In 1 Gif — All Thanks To Bacon?

When Reddit user Amanda posted pictures of her transformational weight loss, she never expected to become an overnight phenom. But, after an inspired reader translated her progress photos into an oddly mesmerizing GIF, she became just that. Watching it happen in GIF form is pretty amazing, but the thing that really got our attention: the prominent role bacon played in her diet. Over the course of two years, Amanda lost an incredible 88 pounds on a high-fat, medium-protein, low-carb diet — also known as the keto diet. (She also says she was influenced by the paleo diet, a close cousin to keto.) But, what is this oddly named regimen? And could it possibly be right for you? Maybe... Advertisement First off, keto is short for ketogenic, and the diet works by reducing the amount of carbs you put into your body, forcing it to burn up fat reserves in order to power itself. But, you might ask, how does the body shed fat so rapidly when all you’re eating is fat? After all, we’ve had “FAT BAD” drilled into our brains for so long that it seems tough to believe the health benefits of such a high-fat plan. Well, here's how it works. People on keto diets typically focus on fatty meats, leafy greens, veggies, and eggs — but totally cut out sugars, refined grains, and fruit juices. And yes, there are lots of similarities between Paleo and keto diets, but very generally, Paleo diets tend to be extremely protein-focused, while this diet is heavy on fats and medium on protein. The reason a bacon-y, buttery regimen could actually help you shed the weight has to do with how your body uses different kinds of food for energy. When we eat sugar and carbs, our bodies react by producing insulin to help regulate our blood sugar; believers in the keto diet say that insulin both encoura Continue reading >>

How To Lose Weight On A Keto Diet In 5 Easy Steps (+ 4 Real-life Examples)

CLEARLY the “eat less”, “eat low fat”, and “just eat everything in moderation” diets haven’t worked too well for most people. So, if you’re still trying to lose weight and keep it off, then maybe it’s time to try something that’s working for tens of thousands of people right now… The Ketogenic Diet. But is it all too good to be true? Yes, we believe Keto is fantastic for weight loss. We’ve just seen it work for way too many people (check out the success stories below). But it’s also not for everyone. So, in this post, we are giving you the real facts behind all the hype as well as real-life stories of people who have lost a lot of weight on Keto. PLUS, how to get started on Keto to lose weight in 5 EASY Steps. What is the Ketogenic Diet? THE HISTORY: Originally the Ketogenic diet was created as an effective treatment for epileptic children. BUT NOW: More and more people are finding that a Ketogenic diet has tons of benefits, including: a healthy way to lose weight, control blood sugar levels, improve your brain function, and potentially even reverse a myriad of health conditions. How does keto do this? The Keto diet puts your body into a powerful fat-burning metabolic state called nutritional ketosis. NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS: In nutritional ketosis, your body generally uses very few carbohydrates for energy. Instead, it switches to using ketones (which are produced from the breakdown of fats). That’s why the keto diet is often called a fat-burning diet… You can literally be burning your own body fat for energy! (It’s still unclear whether ketosis is the magical factor that makes a Keto diet so effective for weight-loss, but whatever it is, it seems to work!) So, how do we get into this nutritional ketosis state? You can get into nutritional k Continue reading >>

Breaking A Weight Loss Plateau

Breaking A Weight Loss Plateau

I know all about how annoying a low carb diet weight loss plateau can be. In 2008, I began to change my eating habits in order to address some serious health problems. I also wanted to lose the excess weight I had accumulated over the years while eating a poor diet full of processed junk food. It took several years and I still struggle with my weight, but then I'm a work in progress. The Most Common Causes of a Weight Loss Plateau Here is my opinion, born of my individual experience, on the most common causes of a weight loss plateau. If you are following a ketogenic diet, and not losing weight, or the weight loss is inconsistent (going down one week and up the next), here are some of the most common causes: Eating more carbohydrate than you think (fruit, nuts, and yogurt are the particular culprits here). I call this carb creep. Eating more calories than your body can handle without storing (this is usually the result of a very high fat intake - for me, too much dairy). You want to be burning your stored fat, not excess fat from your diet. Eating large amounts of low carb foods that elevate insulin. Dairy protein (hard cheeses, yogurt and whey protein in particular), sugar alcohols, and other artificial sweeteners are culprits here. Eating lots of coconut, coconut oil or MCT oil. Coconut oil has a lot of medium chain triglycerides in it. This type of fat can't be stored, so your body has to burn it first. Again, the goal is to burn your stored fat, not fat from your diet. Not exercising in a way that increases insulin sensitivity to the muscles. (The problem is that for people with a broken metabolism, long, slow exercise doesn't work well - it has to be high intensity exercise, which uses all the glycogen stored in the muscles, and makes them more insulin sensitive. How To Lose Stubborn Belly Fat Through Ketosis

How To Lose Stubborn Belly Fat Through Ketosis

Losing stubborn belly fat is one of the biggest challenges when getting in shape. Belly fat is not only aesthetically unappealing, it has health consequences. It can make you vulnerable to many conditions such as diabetes and heart problems. In this blog, we will share with you why belly fat is so ‘stubborn’ to burn, explain what exactly is Ketosis and how you can lose stubborn belly fat through Ketosis. We will also share a specific exercise and a diet plan to help burn this belly fat. What is Stubborn Belly fat and why it is bad for our health? While you may have fat all over different parts of your body, it isn’t the same. Stubborn belly fat is the soft layers of fat around the waistline that covers your abs. To be more precise, there are three types of fat: Triglycerides– A fat circulates in your blood Subcutaneous Fat– The layer of fat directly below the skin’s surface. This is the fat you can grab with your hands Visceral Fat– The dangerous fat. This is located beneath the muscles in your stomach Belly fat unfortunately does not just sit still. Some visceral fat is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. You can estimate whether you are carrying too much belly fat by measuring your waist with tape. Anything over 80 cm (31.5 inches) in women and 94 cm (37 inches) can provoke health issues. Carrying excess visceral fat is associated with an increased risk for: Coronary heart disease Cancer Stroke Dementia Diabetes Depression Arthritis Obesity Sexual dysfunction Sleep disorders Why is Stubborn belly fat so “Stubborn”? To understand what makes belly fat so difficult to burn, let’s dive into the biology. Burning fat is a two-part process: Lipolysis is the process whereby fat cells release molecules of stored fat into the blood. Oxidation Continue reading >>

What It Feels Like When I Lose Weight

What It Feels Like When I Lose Weight

One quick look at my progress and you’ll see that my weight loss is not linear (first 1/3 of the chart notwithstanding). In fact, if you look closely enough, you’ll see that I tend to gain weight, or “spike”, right before I drop again. This drop, or what Lyle McDonald calls a “whoosh“, has a distinct feeling that I’ll get to below. But first, a pretty graph and a few notes about how things work when I’m not losing. I weigh every day. Usually twice. In the mornings, I weigh right after getting up and evacuating. This tends to provide some consistency when measuring a system that fluctuates a surprising amount from day to day, not to mention throughout the day. When I weigh in the morning after waking and flushing, I figure I’m going to be weighing myself at my lightest every day. I also weigh in the evening, usually when I return from work. Sometimes before bed. I don’t record these numbers anymore (though I spent at least half a year doing so). When I’m not losing weight, there is an unmistakable trend to the readings on the scale: in the evenings I’ll weigh 1 to 4 pounds more than I did in the morning. I suspect that the king’s share of that is water weight, and the remainder is composed of the food I’ve consumed (and have not passed or combusted). So this is how the majority of days go. Weigh in the morning, and see a gain in the evening. The next day hopefully I’m down a bit more than I was at the same time the previous day. Put enough of such days together and you start to see gradual progress. But sometimes it goes the other way: sometimes I start gaining, without an appreciable change in my eating patterns. I’ve grown to accept these times, as they usually precede a whoosh of increased rate of weight loss. Since I’m going through Continue reading >>

I Can't Stop Looking At This Major Weight Loss Gif

Reddit user dignityblows, whose real name is Amanda, has become a bit of an internet sensation because of this GIF that shows her losing a significant amount of weight over the course of a year that is a real WHOA. Good Morning America featured Amanda on their program Wednesday (forcing her to do that horrible walk and look away from the camera made popular by The Bachelor); in the segment, Amanda talked about sticking to a Keto/Paleo diet, her very basic weight loss tips and how it was her eating habits and not exercise that prompted her drastic weight loss, though she writes on Reddit that she's "a little disappointed" about how they categorized her habits: I was very clear during the interview that Keto is a high fat and moderate protein diet, but the voice over said I followed a "high protein" diet. Sigh. I guess the world isn't quite ready for the glorious bacon-fueled truth. The best part of Amanda's GIFed weight loss is when her glasses just disappear ala every makeover in every movie ever. She's added a glasses pic from today to prove that they didn't go far. [Reddit] Continue reading >>

Not Losing Weight On A Low-carb Ketogenic Diet? Don’t Give Up And Read Further

The ketogenic diet is not only known to be one of the most effective weight loss tools, but has proven to have many health benefits. Ketosis is a state at which your body produces ketones in the liver, shifting the body's metabolism away from glucose and towards fat utilization. Unless you can check your blood ketones, using Ketostix is an easy way to detect urinary ketones. It's not the most accurate method, but may be good enough to find out whether you are in ketosis. In some cases, weight loss may be difficult even on a low-carb ketogenic diet and there may be a few possible reasons for weight stalling, which I have listed in this post. If you want to know more about the ketogenic diet and how it can help you lose weight, have a look at my Practical Guide to Keto Diet which is freely available on my website also as PDF. 3 free diet plans to help you kickstart your diet, lose weight and get healthy Recipes, giveaways and exclusive deals delivered directly to your inbox A chance to win the KetoDiet app every week Top Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight on a Keto Diet 1. Carbs are Too High Your carbohydrate intake may be too high. Try to decrease your daily carbs limit. Also try to include coconut oil in your diet. Coconut oil consists of MCTs (Medium chain triglycerides), which are easily digestible, less likely to be stored by your body and are used for immediate energy. MCTs are converted in the liver into ketones, which helps you enter ketosis. If you want to know more about carbs, check out this post. For more about ketones, have a look at this post. 2. Protein is Too High or Too Low Your protein intake may be too high/ low. Protein is the most sating macronutrient and you should include high-quality animal protein in your diet.
