Ketogenic Diet And Pcos

Ketogenic Diet And Pcos

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a common disorder among reproductive-aged women. Emerging research suggests that a ketogenic or low-carb diet may improve hormonal regulation, weight control and other PCOS-related issues. This article takes a detailed look at PCOS and how carbohydrate restriction combined with other lifestyle changes may be helpful for women struggling with this condition. What Is PCOS? PCOS was originally named Stein-Leventhal syndrome for the researchers who first described it nearly 100 years ago. It's a common endocrine disorder that typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and is one of the leading causes of infertility. Up to 20% of women of childbearing age are estimated to have PCOS, including as many as 70% that are undiagnosed (1). In PCOS, a woman's ovarian follicles fail to release an egg every 28 days as a result of hormonal imbalance: too much luteinizing hormone (LH) and not enough follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Therefore, instead of the egg maturing, it remains in the ovary and forms a small cyst. This process is repeated on a monthly basis, alternating between the two ovaries, leading to the formation of dozens of cysts over time. High levels of LH stimulate the production of excess androgens (male hormones, including testosterone), which suppress ovulation. In addition, women with PCOS have low levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which normally binds to testosterone in the blood. When SHBG is low, free testosterone rises. Besides interfering with ovulation, high levels of free testosterone can cause symptoms of masculinization. Finally, low levels of SHBG promote insulin resistance, and vice versa. What Are the Symptoms of PCOS? Some of the common signs and symptoms of PCOS include: Menstrual irregularities Continue reading >>

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes With Nutritional Ketosis

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes With Nutritional Ketosis

Virta is a science-based online specialty medical clinic using continuous remote monitoring and intensive coaching to help our patients reverse type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. A unique contributor to our success in this is harnessing and sustaining the metabolic benefits of nutritional ketosis. Admittedly, reversing diabetes is a rather bold goal. By way of contrast, the American Diabetes Association defines type 2 diabetes as a progressive disease whose course at best can be slowed by lifestyle change and medication. Based upon solid sciencesome old and some newwe beg to differ. Perhaps its time for a paradigm change. There are few times in the lives of medical scientists where we have the opportunity to change the course of a major medical disease; and even fewer cases where we actually succeed in doing so. In 1920, Bantings discovery that injected insulin could control type 1 diabetes (T1D) was such an event. As a result, over the last century, millions of people with T1D have achieved long and productive lives; whereas before 1920 most of them would have succumbed to this insulin-deficiency disease within less than a year. Young insulin patient circa 1920s, before insulin, and 4 months after beginning treatment. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), on the other hand, is a very different disease that affects hundreds of millions of people. It responds very poorly to injected insulin. Whereas T1D patients cannot make insulin, people with T2D typically make lots of insulin but are resistant to insulins effects across a variety of cellular functions. Despite these facts having been known for 5 decades, we are taught that the core components of T2D management are to force the body to make even more insulin or to inject more insulin to overcome the insulin resistance that characteriz Continue reading >>

Metformin In Combination With A Ketogenic Diet As An Effective Cancer Protocol

Metformin in Combination with a Ketogenic Diet as an effective Cancer Protocol Metformin originates from the French lilac or goats rue (Galega officinalis, see picture below), a plant used in folk medicine for several centuries including for diabetes and other ailments. Today, the use of Metformin has been shown to decrease the risk of cancer. (1) Metformin has exhibited a strong and consistent antiproliferative action on several cancer cell lines, including breast, colon, ovarian, pancreatic, lung, and prostate cancer cells. (See Exhibits A & B below). These in vitro studies were generally completed by preclinical studies showing a reliable antitumoral effect in various mouse models. In addition, the first clinical trials demonstrated a beneficial effect in breast and colon cancer. (2) Metformin has also shown to increase radiotherapys efficiency. (3) COMBINING A LOW GLUCOSE KETOGENIC DIET WITH METFORMIN Would it be possible to potentiate metformins anti cancer impact within a low glucose environment ? It has been shown that different cancer cells exhibit altered sensitivity to metformin treatment. (CF Exhibit B) One reason for this discrepancy is the common cell culture practice of utilizing high glucose. However, when glucose is lowered, metformin becomes increasingly cytotoxic to cancer cells. In low glucose conditions ranging from 0 to 5 mM, metformin was cytotoxic to breast cancer cell lines MCF7, MDAMB231 and SKBR3, and ovarian cancer cell lines OVCAR3, and PA-1. (4) Recent findings suggest that lowering glucose potentiates metformin induced cell death by reducing metformin stimulated glycolysis. Additionally, under low glucose conditions metformin significantly decreased phosphorylation of AKT and various targets of mTOR, while phospho-AMPK was not significantl Continue reading >>

Question About Keto And Metformin?

Question About Keto And Metformin?

Raynne413 Posts: 1,524Member, Premium Member Posts: 1,524Member, Premium Member I'm on metformin as well, and I would be curious as to what your doctor tells you, if you wouldn't mind reporting back, because I was wondering the same thing. I take my metformin first thing in the morning, after my lunch around 3, and then at bedtime, and I've noticed that by the time I get home from work in the afternoon, around 5, I'm usually feeling sick to my stomach, tired, and shaky, so now I'm wondering if it is from my afternoon dose. KnitOrMiss Posts: 9,918Member Member Posts: 9,918Member Member My doctor recommended staying on Met as it helped with my insulin resistance, but as I added more dairy, it wasn't worth the dumping complication for me personally. Not everyone has that. Since I am doing well staying with my diet plan, and my IR is minimal, I'm able to manage it to 90-95% of the Metformin levels through my Keto diet. I don't believe there is much risk of low blood sugar with it (there was some research a while back), but after adjusting dietarily, you may be able to reduce or stop your dosages eventually. But you may not. Some people's insulin resistance don't get better using diet or it may take a long LONG time to restore your metabolism's "health." So this is very much and individual situation, based on how your body responds. However, if you struggle to stay on plan, it is unlikely that you would ever be able to stop this medication, because low carb eating requires patience and persistence for success. It's not a quick fix... Metformin only works, as I understand it, by making your body see the insulin it has already created instead of making more and continuing the raging hunger cycle that is IR. So since Metformin doesn't create or increase insulin, there should n Continue reading >>

Extreme Ketogenic Dieting: Beyond Atkins Perhaps one of the most effective ways to lose body fat is through low carbohydrate dieting. Once considered a fad diet, this way of eating is gaining tremendous popularity in mainstream culture. Championed by Dr. Robert Atkins, this type of diet is being used by millions of Americans to lose weight. Atkins diet greatly restricted carbohydrates and appears to be successful for more sedentary lifestyles. However, athletes and bodybuilders will find that Atkins diet is not ideal; without carbohydrate intake performance deteriorates and ultimately muscle mass is lost. This does not mean that these diets are not useful to bodybuilders, it simply means that the standard low carbohydrate diet had to be revised to suit the needs of athletes. Bodybuilders have long been aware of this somewhat radical concept of low carbohydrate dieting, more technically known as ketogenic dieting. Daniel Duchaine, in his seminal work BodyOpus, outlines the evolution of the diet. Essentially, research established that the body could switch metabolic pathways and use fats for energy. Athletes discovered, mostly through trial and error, that eating extremely low amounts of carbohydrates allowed them to drop a great deal of weight and water. They combined with this carbohydrate loading, a period of eating almost exclusively carbohydrates. The end result was astonishing, a diet that facilitates fat-loss without any appreciable loss of lean body mass. Duchaine, DiPasquali (author of The Anabolic Diet), and Macdonald (author of The Ketogenic Diet) all present a similar dietary approach. Carbohydrates are restricted to the point where the body enters a state of ketosis where fat is burned as the prime energy source. To understand the biochemistry of ketogenic d Continue reading >>

Nuketom Therapy [ketogenic Diet+metformin+nfkb Inhibitors] At Cancer Forum, Topic 2065831

NUKETOM STANDS FOR: *NU*CLEAR FACTOR KAPPA inhibition + *KETO*GEN DIET + *M*ETFORMIN It actually can work only ONLY IF ALL 3 THING ARE COMBINED: Cacner loves sugar. If you do only Ketogenic diet without metformin drug then liver creates glucose from lactate so thats why it never worked alone. Keto diet and metformin is signififcantly more powerfull against cnc. But most of cnc types if no glucose available can switch to fat burning and protein (glutamin burning). The switch is NFKB. If one blocks NFKB by inhibitors (like natural vitamins A,C,E) when the metabolisme is in glucose mode and then impose ketogenic diet with metformin, it will effectively starve out the cnc cells. Keto d., metformin and NFKB inhibitors have alone anti cnc effect but all 3 together have tremendous. I guess 4 weeks course could do results, but guess the more the better, 8 weeks eg. 0.week- allow normal Sugar diet to get cnc cells adapted to glucose 1.week- 1st half of weekNFKB inhibitors, 2nd half of week: start Keto.d. 2-3-4 week: add metformin in typical diabetes dosage. One: look scholar.google.com for metformin and NFKB Two: here similarly to ketogenic diet and metformin , the fenbendazole/or albendazole/ drugs achieve glucose starvation. This can be alternative way. Vitamins in study are majorinty a potent NFKB inhibitors, that is the reason of tumor supression: Unexpected Antitumorigenic Effect of Fenbendazole when Combined with Supplementary Vitamins-- the mechanism in this study is same, but Fenbendazole antiworm drug makes similar effect like Keto.d.&Metf - it block glucose update of cells - its like artificial ketosis. This study they accidentally discovered the same mechanism - block the NFKB switch by vitamins (A,C,E,...) and glucose and cnc cell cannot switch to alternative source Continue reading >>

What If You Got Cancer Today? Heres How Tim Ferriss Podcast Guest, Dom Dagostino, Responded

What if you got cancer today? Heres how Tim Ferriss podcast guest, Dom DAgostino, responded Recently Tim Ferriss got together with Dom DAgostino to discuss cancer prevention. Dom is currently doing cutting edge research into the affect of things like fasting, ketosis and metformin on cancer cells. During the interview, Tim poses a fascinating question What if you foundyourself with an aggressive form of cancer, what steps would you take? This hypothetical nature of this question is particularly interesting because it allows Dom tospeculateon treatments that could take years to be verified. Scientific research can be frustrating, because often scientists know stuff 5 10 years ahead of the concepts gaining publicconsensus. The first thing Dom says, isthat if the doctor suggests you need something like chemotherapy do it. Everything that follows would be supplemental, and not a replacement: Eat a ketogenic diet, and maintain high levels of ketones. The longer you stay in ketosis, the better tumour suppression you get. Additionally, ketosis has shown to both protect the body against the negative effects of chemotherapy, and also speed up recovery after sessions. Fast.Fasting is the quickest way to get into ketosis, and it promotes the bodies natural garbage clearing and healing mechanisms. He suggests ideally fasting during the day, and then eating a ketogenic diet in the evening. Supplementexogenous ketones, 2 4 times per day. That means products suchas medium chain triglycerides (Dom likes Quest MCT OilPowder ) and coconut oil (make sure its cold pressed virgin oil ). They can help with the on ramp toketosis (helping avoid the initial stress on the body). Then once in ketosis, it can allow you to reach higher levels of ketone readings, which boost ones feeling of wellbeing, Continue reading >>

Carbohydrate Restricted Diet In Conjunction With Metformin And Liraglutide Is An Effective Treatment In Patients With Deteriorated Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Proof-of-concept Study

Go to: Abstract Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic progressive disease. During the course of the disease intensive treatment is often necessary resulting in multiple interventions including administration of insulin. Although dietary intervention is highly recommended, the clinical results of the widely prescribed diets with low fat content and high carbohydrates are disappointing. In this proof-of-concept study, we tested the effect of dietary carbohydrate-restriction in conjunction with metformin and liraglutide on metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Forty patients with type 2 diabetes already being treated with two oral anti-diabetic drugs or insulin treatment and who showed deterioration of their glucose metabolism (i.e. HbA1c >7.5), were treated. A carbohydrate-restricted diet and a combination of metformin and liraglutide were instituted, after stopping either insulin or oral anti-diabetic drugs (excluding metformin). After enrollment, the study patients were scheduled for follow-up visits at one, two, three and six months. Primary outcome was glycemic control, measured by HbA1c at six months. Secondary outcomes were body weight, lipid-profile and treatment satisfaction. Thirty-five (88%) participants completed the study. Nearly all participating patients experienced a drop in HbA1c and body weight during the first three months, an effect which was maintained until the end of the study at six months. Seventy-one percent of the patients reached HbA1c values below 7.0%. The range of body weight at enrollment was extreme, reaching 165 kg as the highest initial value. The average weight loss after 6 months was 10%. Most patients were satisfied with this treatment. During the intervention no significant change of lipids was observed. Most patients wh Continue reading >>

Join the community Discussion in ' Metformin/Biguanides ' started by Sutherlandlass , Mar 15, 2016 . Sutherlandlass Type 2 Well-Known Member Hi folks, I hope someone can clarify something for me please? I am on my second month of metformin, the first was called Gluciet sr, which mentioned nothing about ketosis itself, only ketoacidosis. Is this completely different from ketosis? The current prescription came and it's a metformin called metabet sr. I take the same dose just one 500mg tablet each day with or after my evening meal. The leaflet in this one says, do not take metabet sr if you have ketosis?! I am low carbing, and getting good by results, I drink plenty of water... Does anyone know if this "is" safe or not? I have a telephone consultation booked with my gp, but he doesn't seem to have as much knowledge as you folks on here sometimes! I don't want to be causing injury to myself!! Looking forward to hearing from you folks.. Many thanks, feeling really anxious about this! Probably should have done some basic research before jumping into all of this. These are things you should know beforehand so you don't worry yourself like you're doing now. Nonetheless, to answer your question nutritional ketosis and DKA (ketoacidosis) are completely different situations caused by completely different circumstances. Nutritional ketosis essentially means your body transitions into a state where it gets more energy from fat (ketones) rather than glucose. Most people are in glycolysis which means they get more energy from glucose. Ketoacidosis is essentially a condition where the pH of your blood becomes so acidic that you can basically poison yourself into a coma. You're talking Continue reading >>

Off Of Metformin And Out Of Ketosis? - The Diabetes Forum Support Community For Diabetics Online

Is this a coincidence or what? I've been off Metformin for 6 days now as of today and for 3 straight days I've not been able to show any positive signs of the ketostix. I'm really bummed about this because I don't know why I fell out. I didn't change my food or eating pattern but my appetite has decreased a great deal. I'm not eating as much food as before but i'm still putting mayo, butter, ranch dressing etc on my foods. Maybe i'm eating more protein but I don't feel that I am and I know i'm not eating anymore carbs that's for sure. I'm also running to the bathroom a lot too, almost wetting my pants before I even get there, not sure that means anything. What am I doing wrong? I just spent $53.00 on a ketone meter and strips and now maybe for nothing if I cannot get back in and i'm doing everything to stay in it but fell out anyways Well, I don't know anything about it other than what I read here, but the one thing that seems possible is that you mentioned needing to urinate a lot. If you're still just testing with the ketostix, I read that it's just excess ketones that it measures and depends on how many fluids are being discharged. If you're drinking a lot more fluids, or for whatever reason urinating a lot more, won't that dilute the ketone to liquid proportion, and make the ketostix much less reliable as a measure of ketosis? I would say wait for your ketone meter and see what that says. Supposedly that's a much more reliable method. Who knows, maybe you're still in ketosis and don't know it. Any ideas on why the need to urinate so frequently? Are you drinking more liquids now? I haven't noticed any change for me since being off the met with regard to consuming or discharging liquids, other than during my fasting I've been forcing myself to drink water more freque Continue reading >>
