As you may know, my sister has eye cancer. Two days ago my dad was diagnosed with skin cancer. My mother who has COPD was brought to A&E yesterday where we were told she has sepsis caused by a severe chest infection. Because of this, running to and from hospital, doing the Christmas shopping from my parents and having nothing in for myself and my sister (who's also keto), I haven't eaten in over 40 hours - so when my dad insisted on us both having an apple lattice with coffee, I did. Last month I wrote about Keeping Fit in a Desk Job—going through what I do to try and stay in shape. My next step was to take the diet a bit more seriously and step up the running. In the end I decided to start the Keto diet which is maintaining a state of ketosis by keeping my carbohydrate intake under 25g per day. I’ve just started week five, having started the diet on Sunday 10th August. Here’s what I’ve done, learned and been through. The Keto Diet A Ketogenic Diet causes ketones to be produced by the liver. It’s basically just phase one of the Atkins diet, all the time. This shifts the body’s metabolism away from glucose, and towards fat. Whilst on a fairly high carb diet the body uses glucose for fuel but by restricting this on a Keto diet it switches to fat burn mode. Having such a low carb diet lowers your blood sugar, and with this controlled sugar level you experience less hunger and cravings once your adapted. The Plan I used a Keto Calculator to work out what I should be eating. This gave me my targets to hit which I track through MyFitnessPal. Sadly my Jawbone UP doesn’t allow me to alter the ratios I was aiming for so I couldn’t use that. Here’s my daily goals. This is what I try to hit every day. There are no cheat days as they would send me out of ketosis—not what you want whilst you are still trying to become adapted. Daily calorie intake: 2,262 kcal Protein allowance: 120g (using 21%, 480 kcal) Fat allowance: 187g (using 75%, 1682 kcal) Carb allowance: 25g (using 4%, 100 kcal) What I Eat My diet now consists of high fat and medium protein foods such as meats, eggs, cheese, cream and selected vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. You can buy low carb foods such as meat, fish, eggs, green veggies, cheese, butter, olive oil, cream, nuts and water in any supermarket in the UK. OK…I am being a bit facetious, but these are the best low carb foods around for fat burning. Sometimes I actually think we are lucky in that there are few pre-manufactured low carb foods in the UK – as whenever people choose these products over natural foods, it usually stops their progress. However, if you are looking for low carb foods that can enhance the areas that a low carb way of eating can remove without getting a touch inventive, here are my suggestions: Foods online General LC “reinvented” goods Avid Lite or Amazon Supplements & protein powders from Bulk Powders All manner of Meats from MuscleFood.com or Turner and George Flours, Linseeds, Nuts, Gluten, Gums from BuyWholefoodsOnline.co.uk Foods to look out for in supermarkets Bacon Be careful, and always read labels, as even some of the more expensive brands contains sugar and all contain nitrates. You can soak it before you use it, which helps to get rid of these chemicals. Sausages whilst standard brand sausages are usually only around 50% meat, most “luxury” brand sausages are between 80-95% meat. All contain a crumb of some sort, so always check the ingredients and carbohydrate count. Sausages with added flavours such as apple or caramelised onion are naturally higher in carbs. German style sausage such as bratwurst, weisswust and bockwurst are usually 99% meat and 100% awesome. Yoghurt The GO! diet theory is that the most lactose (sugar) in the milk is eaten up by the bacteria making the carb count lower.
