Ketones are a chemical produced by your body when, due to a lack of insulin, it is not able to use glucose as its source of energy, and instead start breaking down fat ••••• Ketones are a chemical produced by your body when it is not able to use glucose as its source of energy due to a lack of insulin. When glucose can’t be used as energy, your body will start breaking down fat for energy instead and this is when ketones are produced. This is a short term solution for the body as over time the level of ketones will increase and can become dangerously high. If this happens, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can develop which can be life threatening. Having ketones is more common in Type 1 than Type 2 diabetes. You may have continued high glucose readings because you are finding it difficult to manage your diabetes, have missed a few injections, you are ill, have an infection, or for any other reason. It is important to test your level of ketones if you have Type 1 diabetes and your glucose readings are above 15mmols/L. Checking for ketones may be advised by your healthcare professional as part of your diabetes management program. You can test your level of ketones by using urine sticks or blood test strips with a meter that can test for ketones. Not all meters have the ability to test for ketones and you will need separate test strips for ketones to do this. Blood ketone test results Normal blood ketone levels are slightly different from person to person. This table will help you decide if you need to do anything and what you should do. Remember, it is far better to be careful, so if you are not sure contact your diabetes care team straightaway. Blood ketone level What you should do Below 0.6 mmol/L Readings below 0.6 mmol/L are in the normal range. Follow your hea Continue reading >>
Are Keto Sticks Fat Burning Indicators Or A Fat Waste Of Money?
You will no doubt have come across keto sticks if you’ve ever done a ketogenic diet planor read any message boards about low carb diets. Whilst a lot of dieters use them, they do not always understand how to read the results and adjust their diet to optimise it. This article aims to resolve this and clear up the facts about keto strips. Ketogenic diets force your body to adapt to using fat for fuel when glucose (from carbs) is not present, this is known as ketosis Ketones are a by-product of ketosis and keto sticks (also known as ketostix or ketosticks) are urine testing strips which detect the presence of ketones in the blood. They are small plastic strips with an absorbent pad on the end, you urinate on the absorbent pad and it changes colour to reflect the amount of ketones present in your urine. They are also sometimes referred to as keto diastix, don’t get confused as these are two different products. Keto diastix are usually used by Type I diabetics to detect the presence of glucose, they are of no use to keto dieters. Where Can I Purchase Keto Sticks? Amazon is probably your most convenient option – the best I have found online is this: Nurse Hatty Ketone Strips. Diabetics use keto strips also, so sometimes they are with other diabetic products or behind the counter. Ask a shop assistant for help if required. Keto strips are cheap to purchase, no more that a few pounds and a pot will last you a long while. The pot contains a number of strips and a colour chart on the side which ranges from clear to pink to purple. Once you have urinated on the stick, you wait 10-15 seconds and then match the colour of the stick to the chart. Clear: No/trace ketones in your urine Pink: Some ketones in your urine Purple: High level of ketones in your urine Quite simply, No. P Continue reading >>
How To Make Homemade Ph Paper Test Strips
Reader Approved The pH scale measures how likely a substance is to give up protons (or H+ ions) and how likely that substance is to accept protons. Many molecules, including dyes, will change their structure by either accepting protons from an acidic environment (one that readily gives up protons) or donating protons to a basic environment (one that readily accepts protons). Testing for pH is an essential part of many chemistry and biology experiments. This test can be done by coating paper strips with dyes that will change into different colors in the presence of an acid or a base. 1 Chop up some red cabbage. You’ll need to chop about ¼ of a head of red cabbage and put it in a blender. You will extract chemicals from the cabbage to coat your pH paper. These chemicals are known as anthocyanins and are found in plants such as cabbage, roses, and berries. Anthocyanins are purple under neutral conditions (pH 7.0) but they change color when exposed to an acid (pH < 7.0) or a base (pH>7.0). The same procedure can be followed using berries, roses, and other anthocyanin containing plants. This does not work for green cabbage. The same anthocyanins are not present in green cabbage. 2 Add boiling water to your cabbage. You can boil the water on a stovetop or in the microwave, but either way you’ll need about 500 mL of water. Pour the boiling water directly into the blender with the cabbage. This will help draw the needed chemicals out of the cabbage. 7 Soak your paper in the indicator solution. Make sure to push the paper all the way to the bottom. You want to cover all corners and edges of the paper. It is a good idea to use gloves for this step. 8 Allow your paper to air dry on a towel. Find a location that is free of acidic or basic vapors. The paper should be a Continue reading >>
2×1 Home Kidney – Renal Function Disease Urine Strip Tests
Kidney disease is a disease where the kidneys stop functioning normally. The most common cause of kidney disease is diabetes. Other causes of kidney disease are kidney stones, an immune disorder called systemic lupus erythematosus, uncontrolled high blood pressure and drugs. For more information on the kidneys click here READ INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE USING THE TEST This Kidney Function Test provides dip-and-read test strips that are intended for use to check for Creatinine, Protein and Specific Gravity in urine specimens as an aid in the diagnosis of kidney diseases and problems. The test provides results by the visual comparison with the enclosed colour chart. If you obtain an abnormal result with the first strip, repeat the test using another strip. INTRODUCTION Your kidneys are bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They are located near the middle of your back, just below the rib cage. Kidneys filter water products and extra water from your blood and produce urine as a result. Urine flows to your bladder through tubes called ureters. Your bladder stores the urine which will pass through the urethra in the process of urination. The average adult passes between 0.8L and 2.6L per day, depending on the fluids they consume. The volume formed at night is about half that formed in the daytime. The tiny units inside your kidneys, called nephrons, are the actual filtering unit. Every kidney has about 1 million nephrons. Most kidney diseases attack the nephrons, altering their ability to filter blood and produce urine. COMMON CAUSES OF KIDNEY DISEASE: WHAT ARE THE TYPES AND SEVERITY OF KIDNEY DISEASE? Acute Renal Failure (AFR): This type occurs quickly and suddenly. It can happen as a result of an accident that injures the kidney, losing lots of blood, as Continue reading >>

Ketosis – Are You “looking For Purple”?
Two questions I’m asked a great deal are about ketosis. “What colour am I aiming at on the “Ketostix (TM)” testing strips? Where do I get them?” My answers are always this: “Benign Dietary Ketosis” as a concept was championed by Dr Robert Atkins when he published the first version of his plan in 1972. He mentions that you should measure your excreted ketones via urinalysis and be looking for a purple result. Where to get Ketone Urinalysis sticks Either, via Amazon (pretty much the easiest option) or at the Pharmacy counter of any dispensing Chemist. They are a “P” grade medicine, so you have to ask for them. However, being in ketosis is like being pregnant. You either are, or you aren’t. The colour is irrelevant, any shade of Pink/Purple will do. In fact, purple may well be a sign that you are pushing too hard. You may be eating too few vegetable based carbs. Purple means that you are dumping a great deal of excess ketones into urine, rather than burning them. If you are “purple” but find that you are not dropping fat, your body may well be fighting against your mind’s want to drop your excess fat. Your body wants to preserve its homoeostasis and keep you alive. What are the signs of Ketosis? If you are following Dr Atkins’ plan and so testing regularly, the preferable colour really is a pale pink. This is an indicator that your body is in its optimum fat burning zone, using everything that you are producing and not dumping any excess. Once you are effectively burning body fat, most people can tell they are “in ketosis” by the slightly metallic taste in their mouths. Some people say that their body odour changes (Not a BO odour, just personal smell) to incorporate metallic tinges. Others report that their urine has a more noticeable “he Continue reading >>
