Contents Here’s a sample protocol. I’ve given more options below for you to tinker with, but if you just want clear and simple instructions, here you go. I think this is simple enough and doable. You don’t have to follow everything here, but it’s just a sample protocol. A bright light device by the workstation. Keep it about a foot away and use for 15-30 minutes, if you aren’t exposed to a good amount of bright light in the day. Before supper You can eat whatever you want for supper. Follow a diet that you can keep to and that suits your individual health needs. I recommend 20-50g of carbs depending on your individual needs. I’ve gotten into ketosis before but it didn’t work out very well. This protocol is my attempt to make it work more quickly. Getting into “Ketosis” is considered a state where your brain uses ketones for fuel. The most common fuel for your brain is glucose. Recently, I thought about what went wrong and thought about how I could change this. I’ve been experimenting with a modified ketosis version for about a month on and off. This protocol will be updated as I do more experiments and tweak it. This modified version solves most of the problems I had with ketosis when I previously tried it. I had a lot of issues with low carb diets in general, but this protocol is NOT a very low carb diet. I don’t do this protocol anymore because I need more carbs. I still recommend that you try this or a variation of it if you want to get into ketosis. These days I do a lectin avoidance diet, with carbs. But I may revisit ketosis later. My protocol doesn’t rely on ketones for fuel only. I like to get brain fuel from 4 different sources. This is one way in which this protocol is unique. I find if I get too much of one of these four fuels then it Continue reading >>

The Beginners Guide To Ketosis: Investigating Low-carb, High-fat Eating

The Beginners Guide To Ketosis: Investigating Low-carb, High-fat Eating

The only hard and fast rule of health is that health is personal and what works well for one person may not work for someone else. Aside from that rule, there are “frameworks” that seem to benefit large groups of people. One more level down from that are alternative strategies that benefit smaller groups. Ketosis is likely one of those alternative strategies that works well for certain, smaller groups of people. So, right off the bat I want you to understand that Ketosis might not be for everyone. I’m going to lay out the case for potential benefits of Ketosis. If it sounds interesting and beneficial to you, then consider trying it. (see our free cheat sheet to help you). What is Ketosis Ketosis occurs when liver glycogen gets depleted and the body burns fatty acids for fuel. The primary driver of this state is a very low carbohydrate intake. Often, it also requires a low protein, higher fat intake. You can also achieve a state of ketosis by not eating altogether. The creation of ketones is a byproduct of this metabolic state. Ketones are a source of fuel, just as glucose is a source of fuel. Ketones tend to have some added benefits, though. What role does Ketosis play in human health? Ketosis allows our bodies to function in the absence of carbohydrates, both physically and mentally. Instead of burning carbohydrates, or converting protein to glucose, the body burns ketones. This is pretty much a survival mechanism. It allows your body to function in a state of caloric deprivation. This is why ketosis often gets bad press (as it’s linked to “starvation”). Being a survival mechanism doesn’t make it invalid as a strategy, though. There can still be potential benefits to be had. Let’s cover a few of them… Ketosis and Accelerated Fat Loss Being in ketosis Continue reading >>

5 Simple Steps To Get Into Ketosis

5 Simple Steps To Get Into Ketosis

I think almost everyone agrees with me when I say that the ketogenic diet is probably one of the most complex and difficult eating plans out there. Even when you’re not on a diet or trying to lose weight you still have to bring a lot of attention to detail. Getting into ketosis isn’t as important as we would think, but there are still 5 simple steps we can make to get into a ketotic state. What Needs to Happen The conditions of nutritional ketosis are: Low blood sugar levels (about <85 mg/dl) Low insulin And because of that there are going to be: Higher glucagon, which is released by the liver, in response to low insulin, to increase the amount of fatty acids in the blood stream. High serum blood ketone levels, with the optimal zone being in between 0.5 and 3.0 mMols. Here are the 5 simple steps to get into ketosis. Step #1 Do a 24-Hour Fast Ketosis is the by-product of a prolonged period of fasting. After your liver glycogen stores have been depleted already after an overnight fast, the liver then begins to create more ketone bodies. After 2-3 days of fasting, you’ll be definitely in ketosis. Your brain will adapt to using ketone bodies and gets about 75% of its energy from fat. Overall, the body’s glucose demands and protein catabolism get reduced to a bare minimum. However, to get into ketosis we don’t necessarily have to abstain from eating that long. We’re already in mild ketosis in the morning and doing a 24-hour fast will increase our ketogenic pathways by a significant amount. Step #2 Start Eating Low Carb Ketogenic Meals Once you finish your 24-hours, you can start eating keto foods. Make your first meal something extremely ketogenic, meaning: Ultra-low carbs – cruciferous vegetables, like spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chard. Your Continue reading >>

Some people need to be in ketosis for medical reasons while others need to be in a fat-burning mode for athletic competitions. Whatever the reason, I’ve conjured up tips on how to get into ketosis in 24 hours. Before I begin… These tips are purely from experience. While a lot of it has been backed by research, always take things with a grain of salt. There is no one size fits all diet that will turn you into superman. Anyways.. When I first adopted the low carb high fat keto lifestyle a couple years back, I became obsessed with it. To me it felt like I just struck a goldmine. It felt like some sort of esoteric subculture that no one knows about and those that do, have a leg up on their competition. With this newfound obsession, I spent hours on researching, implementing, and documenting how to get into ketosis as fast as possible. The science is out there. Study after study showing how beneficial being in ketosis is. Through trial and error, I’ve conjured up these tips on how to get into ketosis in 24 hours. Some of it is probably obvious and common sense but that doesn’t mean it isn’t effective. Starting Tips On How To Get Into Ketosis In 24 Hours Start Intermittent Fasting (IF) I’ve mentioned it in a previous post, here. Intermittent fasting is like peanut butter and jelly, like batman and robin, like a fork and spoon, like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump (just kidding). But seriously. By prolonging the time in which you eat your first meal, your body begins to enter a fat-burning stage (ketosis). I emphasize intermittent fasting with the ketogenic diet because it speeds up the whole process in depleting your glycogen storages. My recommendation is to skip breakfast completely. A popular protocol that many people praise is the 16:8 hour fast. This means y Continue reading >>

What if I told you that you can get into ketosis only in 2 days. It is possible. What about one day? Also possible! 1 hour? Of course! Most people are looking for the easiest and the fastest solution to everything. “Lose 20 pounds in 1 day with this magic pill!” Did it work for you? I don’t think so. I will also provide you with necessary techniques, shopping list, and recipes that will help you to start the keto diet and get into ketosis. Ketosis vs. keto-adapted There is a lot of confusion all over the Internet about being in ketosis vs being keto-adapted (fat adapted). Some people use them interchangeably without fully understanding the meaning behind them. Let’s clarify both terms and find out which one we are trying to achieve today. What is ketosis? Ketosis is a metabolic process that is activated when our body doesn’t have enough glycogen (derived from carbs) for our cells to burn for energy. Instead, it starts to convert fat deposits (adipose) to energy. As a part of this process, it makes ketones. Ketone bodies are water-soluble molecules that are produced by our liver from fatty acids. We produce ketones because fatty acids can’t cross a blood-brain barrier, and they can’t be used by our brain as energy. When people talk about nutritional ketosis they associate it with the presence of ketones in your bo Continue reading >>

The best way is to change your diet. You really need to be eating fewer than 50g of Net carbohydrates per day and eat a health amount of quality fats (both saturated and mono-unsaturated - avoid the kind of inflammatory polyunsaturates that we’ve been told to eat for the last 40 years). However, there are certainly some short cuts. 1.) If you want to help yourself get into ketosis faster then using a high quality MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) Oil will speed this up. I think Dave Asprey makes the best oils. The strongest one is Brain Octane Oil - this only has the C8 chain of fatty acid. The next level down is the standard MCT Oil which has both C8 and C10 chains XCT Oil. By far my favorite way of getting into and staying in Ketosis (and this is coming from somebody who follows all the correct nutritional rules) is Exogenous Ketones. These put you into a state of Ketosis almost immediately (and that is reflected in the price range). Until now most of them were too unpalatable to bother with but there have been some fantastic innovations in the last year. I really like KetoSports KetoCaNa - it has a very pleasant taste and does not have any sugar, unlike some of the other brands. Anyway, best of luck to you. How To Get Into Ketosis In Less Than 3 Days

Do you need to get into ketosis super fast? Don't think you can handle the deprivation and hunger of a water fast? The good news is that you don't have to. You can rev up your metabolism, escape hunger, and be on your way to fat burning in one or two days! All it takes is a ketogenic diet that is lower in carbs than standard keto. This will cut your cravings to the bone and switch you from a glucose burning metabolism to burning fat faster than anything else! Ketogenic diets work by reducing basal insulin levels, lowering blood triglycerides, and setting up conditions that will move you into the state of nutritional ketosis. Getting into ketosis is important because when the body produces ketones, your hunger level goes down, your energy goes up, and you experience a state of well-being. All of these benefits will make it easier for you to stick to your low-carb diet plan. On a typical keto diet, it takes 3 to 5 days to enter into the state of ketosis. But how quickly you do that depends on how many carbohydrates you were eating per day before you started restricting them. In addition, if you're looking for the urine testing strips to change colors right now, that only occurs once ketosis is well under way. Most low-carb diets start you off at 20 to 30 net carbs. Atkins 20 and the Reddit version of Keto begin at 20 net carbs, and the Protein Power Lifeplan begins at 30. These amounts are low enough to get the job done within a few days. If you're coming from a carb-heavy diet, it might take a little longer to switch metabolic pathways than if you're merely switching from a low-calorie plan to Atkins, Keto, or LCHF. However, there is a much quicker method that you can use right now instead of these standard Keto diets. The quick-start method I'm going to share with you i Continue reading >>

Keep Yourself In Ketosis

Keep Yourself In Ketosis

When talking about a Grain Brain lifestyle, and the very similar ketogenic diet, it’s frequently mentioned that we are aiming to keep our bodies in ketosis. However, if you’re new to my work, it may be that you’re not exactly sure what ketosis is, or why we should be worrying about getting our body into this state. Allow me to explain. Ketones are a special type of fat that can stimulate the pathways that enhance the growth of new neural networks in the brain. A ketogenic diet is one that is high in fats, and this diet has been a tool of researchers for years, used notably in a 2005 study on Parkinson’s patients finding an improvement in symptoms after just 28 days. The improvements were on par with those made possible via medication and brain surgery. Other research has shown the ketogenic diet to be remarkably effective in treating some forms of epilepsy, and even brain tumors. Ketones do more than just that though. They increase glutathione, a powerful, brain-protective antioxidant. Ketones facilitate the production of mitochondria, one of the most important actors in the coordinated production that is the human body. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our bodies are said to enter ketosis at the point when blood sugar levels are low and liver glycogen are no longer available to produce glucose as a fuel for cellular energy production. At this point, not only is the body doing the natural thing, and burning off fat, it’s also powering up the brain with a super efficient fuel. We can jump start ourselves into ketosis with a brief fast, allowing our body to quickly burn through the carbs that are in our system, and turn to fat for fuel. A ketogenic diet is one that derives around 80% or more of of its calories from fat, and the rest from carbs and prote Continue reading >>

The Top Tips For Getting Into Ketosis Quickly

The Top Tips For Getting Into Ketosis Quickly

Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body starts producing ketone out of fat and your body converts fat into compounds known as ketones and begins using them as its main source of energy. So, instead of your body using carbs for energy, it will shoot for fats. Ketogenic diets have become incredibly popular in the recent years with more and more people starting to practice diets such as Atkins, Keto, Low-carb, Slow-carb and much more ketogenic related diets. The first step to starting off a ketogenic diet is to put your body into a ketosis state. One of the hardest things that beginners struggle with is getting themselves into ketosis. In this article, we’ll cover the top tips for getting your body into ketosis and the health benefits behind a ketogenic diet. Weight Loss There are a lot of health benefits associated with ketosis. One of the most common ones is weight loss. Most people put their body into ketosis to speed up their weight loss process. One of the reasons for this is that ketogenic diets tend to get rid of excess water from the body. Our body is mainly made up of water and when you are eating a lot of carbs, our body will naturally retain those water. With a ketogenic diet insulin levels are lowered, the results of this is that the kidneys start shedding excess sodium, leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two. This is why a lot of people tend to drop a lot of weight quickly in the early weeks. This is usually just water weight that was retained over time. In this study, which compared low-fat diets vs low-carb diets. People with low-carb diets tend to lose weight 2-3x faster than people on a low-fat diet. Another reason for people losing more weight on Ketogenic diets is because your body will go straight into fat burning mode after it’s Continue reading >>

Using The Fat Fasting Technique

Using The Fat Fasting Technique

The fat fast is a technique brought by Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution – used by people who are metabolically resistant and have trouble with their induction. Let me first say that fat fasting should be used in 2 situations and 2 situations only: Breaking through a 2 week or longer plateau. Inducing yourself into ketosis quicker, whether you are just starting keto or you had a cheat day. If you’re the type of person that loses weight easily and you are NOT hitting a plateau, then fat fasting should NOT be used. It can be potentially dangerous for someone that is not metabolically resistant, or for someone that is not on a plateau. You should not fat fast consistently. Like I said, it is only for people starting a ketogenic diet and want to be inducted into ketosis faster, or for people that are on a long (2 weeks or more) plateau. Understanding the Fat Fast The lack of carbohydrates and protein will allow your body to depreciate your glycogen stores quicker, also allowing your body to go after the fat stores, like we want it to, to use as fuel. Fat fasting will force the body to undergo lipolysis, so that it burns up fat that is stored in the body. Lipolysis is a process involved in the breakdown of fats, converting triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. The longer you fast, the more of these free fatty acids will be released. Why is this important? Well fatty acids are used by the liver to create small amounts of ketone bodies, and used as fuel. Lipolysis cannot happen if there is a significant amount of glucose coming in, but since 80% – 90% of what you will be eating are fats, you don’t need to worry about excess protein or carbs converting into glucose. What the Fat Fast Is So, what exactly is a fat fast? It’s eating between 1000 and 1200 calo Continue reading >>

How To Get Into Ketosis Fast | (7 Keto Hacks) To Enter Ketosis Quickly

How To Get Into Ketosis Fast The biggest question I get is how to get into ketosis fast? When I first started my ketogenic lifestyle two years ago, I was just trying to lose weight “period”. I didn’t understand being in a state of nutritional ketosis let alone being fat adapted. For those reasons, I failed miserably trying different types of the ketogenic diet like CKD (Cyclic Keto Diet). It was painful eating low carb during the week because all I could think about was refeeding on the weekend. Was it because I was doing it wrong? Or maybe I shouldn’t be doing it at all…Hmmm It seemed like every Monday and Tuesday I was experiencing keto flu all over again…lol… It was horrible repeating that week after week. Basically, if I was reaching ketosis by the end of the week, I was kicking myself out of it come the weekend! But like I said, I didn’t understand what ketosis was at the beginning stages so I had to learn the hard way. So I’m grateful you found this as I want to inspire you to give your all… Sorry about the rant… Let’s get down to the Dirty! When you’re in a state of ketosis your liver oxidizes fat into energy molecules that the brain then utilizes as fuel. To be in ketosis you have to be producing 0.5 mmol/L – 5.0 mmol/L of ketones which you can test using a glucometer. Below I’m going to give you some tips that have helped people that I’ve worked with get into ketosis fast. Get to Bed Early Sleep is the most important factor on a ketogenic diet because this is when the body produces the most ketones. Basically, you body repairs at night from releasing growth hormones. Here are a few reasons to get to sleep on time… 1: You don’t want high cortisol levels at night because it can cause an inflammatory state and spike your glucose Continue reading >>

Getting Back Into Ketosis After Cheating

Getting Back Into Ketosis After Cheating

Falling off the ketogenic wagon never feels great – I’ve been there, done that many times. Especially in the early days. I know that feeling of being disappointed with yourself and frustration at seemingly being back at square one. In those first few months, what would happen to me is I’d have a couple of splendid weeks, where I wasn’t feeling hungry, I could feel my clothes getting looser, and everything was going well. And then, totally unexpectedly, the carb cravings would hit. I’d go through a day or two of feeling this kind of tension and ridiculously insane desire for carbs. I ‘d resist and resist until a part of my brain that didn’t seem to be me would take over, and I’d find myself stood in front of the cupboard with a piece of bread in one hand and a packet of crisps in the other. What then would follow was a 3-day binge on pretty much any carb I could get my hands on. Followed by feeling pissed at myself and fed up at having to start back at the beginning. After the fourth or fifth time of this happening, I decided I had to really figure out what was going on here. Why was I falling off the wagon and how could I make it so that this didn’t happen. Here’s what I realised: First of all, if I was living in a way which meant there was a possibility of ‘cheating’ or ‘falling off the wagon’ – that meant I was essentially on a diet. And I didn’t want to be on a diet. I wanted just to be eating in a way that felt good and satisfying and which also led to weight loss and better health. I didn’t want to be eating in order to get to a destination, I wanted to be living my life now, eating each day in a way that just brought me more and more benefits – physically, mentally and emotionally. Secondly, I wanted to be in a position where if Continue reading >>
