Switching to a Ketogenic diet can be exciting, and you may be wondering how long it will be before you can expect to see results or ask “how long does it take to get into Ketosis?” This is perfectly normal, and almost everyone wonders the same thing when they switch to a low carb, high fat diet. The good news is, for most people, this change takes place within a few days or weeks. Keep reading to find out how you can improve your body’s efficiency, and learn how to stay in Ketosis for the long-term. After all, it’s easier to stay in Ketosis once you’re there. How Do I Get into Ketosis? To answer your question of “how long does it take to get into Ketosis,” you must first ask “what is Ketosis” and “how do I get into Ketosis?” Let’s get started: Ketosis is a metabolic process and describes when the body uses fat for fuel. This occurs when there is a lack of glucose. As we generally eat a high carb, high sugar diet in the Western world, most people never enter Ketosis. Just because you lose weight does not mean you are in Ketosis, either, it just means you are eating a calorie deficient. When you switch to a low-carb diet and restrict your glucose, you might experience the Keto flu; these symptoms are your body learning to use fat as fuel, and signaling there is a change. For most people, this is a welcome change, but for other people, the transition takes a few weeks. It can even take a few people months to get into Ketosis, but this is usually because they are not following a strict Ketogenic diet. To get into Ketosis, you must: Eat less than 20g of carbs per day Restrict your intake of protein and Continue reading >>
5 Tips To Get Into Ketosis Faster
I've put off writing this post for one reason only. While I've remained low carb at about 100g per day and reaped the benefits of being fat adapted (controlled fasting blood glucose, effortless weight management and hunger control) I'm not currently in ketosis for more than a day at a time and haven't been for several months now. So that leaves me feeling very do as I say, not as I do as I write this, and that doesn't feel very genuine on my part. However, as I'm developing the itch to go at it again like I did in the Fall of last year, I'm hoping that this will motivate me to jump back on the Keto wagon to help me lose about 10lbs. I find that staying low carb at around 100g per day allows me to maintain my weight, but in order to lose, being in ketosis and tracking my caloric intake works best. I will preface this blog post with a little disclaimer, however. These are my opinions and suggestions based on observations I've experienced myself. There's some controversy over things like #2 and #5 and I chose to save those pros and cons for another day when we can really dive into facts, studies, etc. For now, I decided to keep it simple and to the point. So take my suggestions and decide if one, all, or even none of them are for you. Then try them on for size and re-evaluate. Simple as that =) That all said, ketosis is not always an easy task but it is very doable. It's hardest for those coming off a diet full of processed food-like products. So assuming you have already switched to a real food lifestyle, done some research on this topic and have gradually reduced your carbs to about 100 per day, here are 5 tips for entering ketosis faster. #1 watch your carbs This seems like a no brainer, especially if this is your first attempt at getting your body into ketosis. But it' Continue reading >>

How does that help you? Because fat as a fuel source provides more energy, is easy to access, and more efficient. It is like Rocket Fuel, and let’s face it, Rocket Fuel packs power. Adding power to our bodies is essential. A body with no power slows you down physically. We have a term for that… it’s called rigor-mortis. (That’s doctor humor in case you didn’t know… a guy’s gotta have a little fun) As a doctor and a patient, I’ve searched high and low for products to help get the body into Ketosis and help it stay there. What's The Fastest Way To Get Into Ketosis?
The best way is to change your diet. You really need to be eating fewer than 50g of Net carbohydrates per day and eat a health amount of quality fats (both saturated and mono-unsaturated - avoid the kind of inflammatory polyunsaturates that we’ve been told to eat for the last 40 years). However, there are certainly some short cuts. 1.) If you want to help yourself get into ketosis faster then using a high quality MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) Oil will speed this up. I think Dave Asprey makes the best oils. The strongest one is Brain Octane Oil - this only has the C8 chain of fatty acid. The next level down is the standard MCT Oil which has both C8 and C10 chains XCT Oil. By far my favorite way of getting into and staying in Ketosis (and this is coming from somebody who follows all the correct nutritional rules) is Exogenous Ketones. These put you into a state of Ketosis almost immediately (and that is reflected in the price range). Until now most of them were too unpalatable to bother with but there have been some fantastic innovations in the last year. I really like KetoSports KetoCaNa - it has a very pleasant taste and does not have any sugar, unlike some of the other brands. Anyway, best of luck to you. The Easiest Way To Get Into Ketosis
For some people, Keto can be something mystical and always out of their reach. Indeed, it’s difficult to establish a state of nutritional ketosis, but everyone can do it by using the easiest way to get into ketosis. Getting into ketosis requires these conditions to be met. Liver glycogen stores (100-150 grams of glucose) have been depleted and the liver starts converting fatty acids into ketone bodies. This takes approximately 16 hours or so. The concentration of serum blood ketone levels is above 0.5 mMols, optimally not higher than 3.0 mMols. Blood sugar and circulating insulin have dropped significantly, while not causing a hypoglycemic response. You can accomplish it with two things: Fast for an extended period of time Restrict your carbohydrate intake to close to zero for a few weeks Both of them are almost identical – fasting induces ketosis, and the ketogenic diet mimics the physiology of fasting to a great degree. There’s not much difference between fasting ketosis and nutritional ketosis. The only distinction is what physiological state your body is in, but they still have a few unique traits. Fasting Ketosis – You haven’t consumed any calories for 24+ hours and thus experience higher levels of blood ketones. In addition, you’ve elevated the metabolic pathway called ‘autophagy’ that causes cellular repair and maintenance. Nutritional Ketosis – You’ve established ketosis by restricting carbohydrates to almost zero and have depleted liver glycogen that way. Ketone bodies get created but you’re still in a fed state, thus suppressing autophagy. While getting into fasting ketosis takes about 1-3 days, nutritional ketosis requires 2-3 weeks of keto-adaptation, during which you need to stay close attention to how many carbs and protein you eat, a Continue reading >>
Tim Ferriss – 3 Day Fast Protocol Details – Get Into Ketosis Quicker And Easier
In Tim Ferriss’ new book Tools of Titans he puts forward a method to optimize the process of fasting. In his typical 80/20 style, he aims to get the most benefits, in the least amount of time. His recommended fast is conducted in a 3 day period, spanning Thursday evening to Sunday evening. 3-Day Fast Overview Stop eating Thursday night Friday morning go for a long walk to accelerate your transition into ketosis Friday and Saturday stay fasted, and consume moderate amounts of exogenous ketones and MCT oil (as needed), to give you a boost while you’re keto adapting. Sunday evening you break the fast. Here’s the process in more detail if you don’t have Tools of Titans to hand: Thursday Evening Eat a low carbohydrate dinner around 6pm. Make that the last meal of the day. Go to bed as normal. Friday Morning Drink some caffeine if needed, then get out the door and walk within 30 minutes of waking. Bring at least 1 litre of water, with some added salt (to prevent headaches/cramping), and sip as you walk. Walk for 3-4 hours(!). Filling up/buying more water as needed. Arrange phone calls for this time, to make the time productive. The idea behind the walk is that you use up your glycogen stores, forcing your body to move quicker into deep ketosis. The quicker you get into ketosis, the less time you spend feeling sub-optimal, and the less potential muscle wastage. Friday Day (post walk) Consume exogenous ketones or MCT oil 2-3 times throughout the day, where necessary. Tim primarily uses KetoCaNa & KetoForce as exogenous ketone sources. Both these products contain 11.7g of Beta-hydroxybuterate per serving, and each contain 16 servings. The key difference is that KetoForce is an unflavoured (alkaline) liquid. And KetoCaNa is an orange flavoured powder you can mix into wate Continue reading >>

6 Steps Of Getting Into Ketosis
Steps of Getting Into Ketosis | Keto Diet Induction | Ketosis Quick Start | Ketosis Process Ketosis is a normal metabolic state is which most of the energy supply required by your body will be gained from the ketone bodies in your blood. This process is different from glycolysis, in which most of your energy will be provided by the glucose levels in your blood. Keto adaptation takes place when your metabolism is transferred to depending on fat-based sources as your main source of fuel, rather than depending on sugar or glucose sources. The fat oxidation in your body improved as your fats broken down into ketones. Ketones are the main source of energy. The level of your carb intake at present will have a great impact on the amount of time it will take for you to get into ketosis. Those addicted to sugar take anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months to completely train your body to get into the process. However, there are certain steps you can follow to train your body faster. If you have been thinking about how to get into ketosis and looking for effective ways for the same, here are a few steps you should follow: 1. Reduce Your Carb Intake As mentioned before, your body is fully trained to use glucose as the main source of energy. But, by reducing your intake of carbohydrate, you can make your body look for a different source of energy, like fatty acids or ketone bodies, which is also naturally produced. However, carbohydrate’s restriction level in ketosis differs from one person to another. While some of you can initiate the process by limiting your daily carb intake to 20 grams, others may need to take twice this amount to achieve the same results. Once your body adapts to this source of energy, you can slowly increase the level of your carb intake as long as you remai Continue reading >>

Ketogenic diets have become incredibly popular in the recent years with more and more people starting to practice diets such as Atkins, Keto, Low-carb, Slow-carb and much more ketogenic related diets. In this article, we’ll cover the top tips for getting your body into ketosis and the health benefits behind a ketogenic diet. Weight Loss There are a lot of health benefits associated with ketosis. One of the most common ones is weight loss. Most people put their body into ketosis to speed up their weight loss process. One of the reasons for this is that ketogenic diets tend to get rid of excess water from the body. Our body is mainly made up of water and when you are eating a lot of carbs, our body will naturally retain those water. With a ketogenic diet insulin levels are lowered, the results of this is that the kidneys start shedding excess sodium, leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two. This is why a lot of people tend to drop a lot of weight quickly in the early weeks. This is usually just water weight that was retained over time. In this study, which compared low-fat diets vs low-carb diets. People with low-carb diets tend to lose weight 2-3x faster than people on a low-fat diet. Yes, You Can Get Into Ketosis Even If You're Vegan. Here's How
One of the most interesting panels at this year's revitalize, mbg's exclusive event in the Arizona desert (think TED but with a lot more yoga and probiotics), was a discussion on intermittent fasting and ketosis, two buzzwords just beginning to become familiar in the health world. Mention a ketogenic diet, and those who are familiar typically picture something similar to a high-fat paleo diet, heavy in animal protein and plant and animal fat. Because of this, panelist Carrie Diulus, M.D., made waves when she detailed using intermittent fasting and ketosis to maintain an almost 100-pound weight loss and manage her type 1 diabetes. Oh—and she does it all while being plant-based. Fascinated (and filled with questions!), we caught up with her after the panel to learn more. CD: I stopped eating meat because I thought it was healthier when I was 12, and I was vegan/vegetarian for about two decades. During my 20s, this resulted in me eating mostly processed junk, which resulted in me weighing 100 pounds more than I do now. I started medical school and lost the weight eating a calorie-restricted, low-fat, mostly vegan diet. During my orthopedic residency, I started eating meat again. I gained 60 pounds with each of my pregnancies and lost the weight (again!) eating low-fat vegan and exercising. My diet at the time wasn't healthy for me; it was super carb heavy even though I wasn't eating many processed foods. My health declined and I was gaining substantial weight. Eventually, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and started eating a low-carb diet with meat to keep my insulin steady and blood sugar balanced. This worked nominally well for a while, but I never felt really, really great. Finally, I went back to being vegan but stayed keto. I've never felt better in my life, and Continue reading >>

Four New, Cutting-edge Ways To Easily Shift Your Body Into Fat-burning Mode & Ketosis.
Great article. You actually answered my question as to the ratio of the 3 BHB salts which is quite helpful for me. For me, I had Keto O/S and found it quite good – my favorite was the chocolate swirl. But it was and is very expensive. Only 15-20 servings and would break the bank. So I turned to KetoCaNa and I’ve tried two flavours. Both of them were so salty that I almost threw up every time. Like flavoured sea water. Also only 15 serving per bottle. Then I turned to Ketond which is okay – Tigers Blood and Caramel Macchiato. What I like about Ketond is that it has a full 30 servings and is very transparent with it’s ingredients. It’s also the same price as Keto OS but you get 30 servings. But still, not the best taste. So in the end, I ordered 1kg of pure BHB Magnesium from a supplier in China and I will be developing my own Ketone product with 30 servings as a lower price than all the competitors, and with more Magnesium, and Calcium in it than Sodium so that it tastes the best and actually helps with weight loss (which Magnesium is proven to do at the right amount). What the companies don’t tell you is that actually Sodium BHB is the cheapest, then Calcium BHB and then Magnesium BHB to source so I would be interested in knowing if what you wrote is actually true or just an excuse to make the product cheaper. Probably a mix of both. So I have 2 questions Ben: 1. If you had to split the 11.7g of BHB into Sodium, Ca, and Mg, what ratio would you do for the best health results and potential weight loss? The current products on the market are about an 80/12/8 split. I would think it should be the other way around. 2. When I develop my own product and sell it, would you be up for sampling it and reviewing it on your website here? What flavours do you like/would Continue reading >>
