Is Keto Dangerous While Pregnant, Breastfeeding, Or For Children?

A question I’ve come across seemingly increasingly in the past few months, is a variation of, is it safe for kids to eat keto, including women during pregnancy and breastfeeding? This is where a simple disambiguation between a well and poorly formulated diet should end the discussion but let’s dig a little bit deeper into the concerns themselves, studies on children, the validity thereof, what a good diet is and context. One of the applications of a well formulated ketogenic diet has been in treatment of PCOS with much success, though more research is needed. You can search for yourself to find more info on this and the specifics with lots of other blogs and anecdotes covering it out there, but between weight loss and improved hormone regulation from better food choices it’s a way to manage symptoms and issues associated with the disorder. Many women who see improvements have noted they end up with a surprise pregnancy after starting low carb. Though usually planned or at least semi-planned, you can find near endless anecdotes of despite several years of trying, a sudden ketobaby happened after a few weeks or months of low carb. Just search through //www.reddit.com/r/xxketo and /r/ketobabies for personal accounts thereof. If you’ve done prior research into keto, you should already know that improvements in endocrine function are one of the benefits with plenty of evidence to support it. So if you’ve found yourself with a surprise baby thanks to keto the next question is, can you, should you, or is it dangerous to continue while pregnant? Ketosis and Pregnancy: Thanks to Japan and low carb as a treatment for diabetes we do have some research done regarding the application of a low carb diet in pregnant mothers on ketone levels and their role. Aside from this, c Continue reading >>

How To Bio-hack Your Body For Sustained Ketosis With Exogenous Ketones

How To Bio-hack Your Body For Sustained Ketosis With Exogenous Ketones

You’ve heard the phrase work smart, not hard. Given the advancing state of technology today, never has this been more true. So why not apply the same philosophy to weight loss? Rather than diet hard, diet smart… and lose! Sustaining Ketosis and Consistent Weight Loss Throughout Your 40-Day HCG 2.0 Diet Until recently, it’s been assumed that the only way to achieve optimal and sustained ketosis, the Shangri La state of rapid weight loss, was to drastically limit carb intake. Even with the assistance of HCG, this process could take up to a week of ultra low-carb dieting and is associated with hunger, lethargy and sometimes depression. But once achieved, you’re in the weight loss sweet spot and the pound-shedding, fat-burning fire has been lit. During optimal ketosis, your body begins to burn your own stored fat as an energy source rather than blood glucose. However, the human body is quite determined to store away fat for primitive survival reasons, like famine and long winters. When a woman becomes pregnant this physiology get’s flipped upside down because the growing baby needs a 24/7 calorie source. This is why we compliment your low calorie diet with HCG. It essentially provides the same effect. However, it’s not easy to fool the human body. It’s much smarter than you think. In the holistic world of medicine, we call this innate intelligence. As a result of this intelligence, we can temporarily pull a fast one on our bodies with HCG, but your body isn’t just going to sit idly by and let you get away it. After 20-25 days on the diet, your body will re-adjust its ketosis point to maintain some of its fat deposits. This leads to a slowing down of your weight loss. This can be really frustrating for some. It’s like running into construction on your way t Continue reading >>

Diabetes & Ketogenic Diet: Can You Manage Your Diabetes On A Ketogenic Diet?

Diabetes & Ketogenic Diet: Can You Manage Your Diabetes On A Ketogenic Diet?

In this article we will cover what a Ketogenic diet is and if you can manage your diabetes while on this diet. Ketogenic diet for diabetics is a highly controversial topic, but we will break down everything here for you! As a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), I have to tell you from the start I will have a biased view here. Sorry, but I feel that I need to be completely honest right up front! I will however, present all the evidence that is available currently on the subject. As a CDE, I have been taught to follow the American Diabetes Association Dietary Guidelines for Americans which is low in carbohydrates, high in fiber, with fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The Ketogenic Diet this article will be discussing is much lower in carbohydrates, in order to promote the state of nutritional ketosis, or the fat burning state for weight loss. What is a Ketogenic Diet? The Ketogenic Diet is a low carbohydrate diet, consisting initially of less than 20 carbohydrates per day. Not per meal, yes, you heard me correctly, per day. It is not for the faint of heart and yes I am writing from experience. Of course I have tried it! Hasn’t everybody in America at some point who has wanted to lose weight? Does it work you ask? Of course it does! The problem is how long can you keep it up? Your body uses the carbohydrates you eat for energy, so if we restrict how many carbohydrates we eat, the body has to get its fuel source from fat. A byproduct of this fat burning state are ketones which are produced; this is called nutritional ketosis. You can determine if you are in this fat burning state by purchasing urine ketone testing strips from your local pharmacy. The Ketogenic Diet with Diabetes Some precautions must be made clear; this diet is not appropriate for people with any Continue reading >>

Are you eating organic foods and exercising? Do you make sure that you eat whole foods that are non-GMO? Are you interested in releasing heavy metals from your system? All of these questions are on my mind in between chasing around my three little boys. And of course weight loss too! I really want to knock out that last 20 pounds of baby number three! In my quest to get healthy, I have been researching various ways to burn fat. That’s when I came across a powerful macronutrient called ketones. Why is it so special? It helps your body burn fat rather than carbohydrates. This is something that I am definitely interested in! So I started taking Keto OS and then I wrote this ketone supplement review. What are exogenous ketones? Have you ever wondered what are exogenous ketones? Let’s start with the word exogenous which is something that is created from external factors. In this case this means that these ketones are made by scientists and then eaten to accelerate ketosis. Your body produces ketones organically when you experience starvation or you eat a diet that restricts carbohydrates and increase your intake of fats. The ketones are used as a fuel source for your body and fo Continue reading >>

Exogenous Ketones Pros And Cons

Exogenous Ketones Pros And Cons

What Are Exogenous Ketones? Exogenous Ketones (EK for short) are ketone supplements and by definition, a supplement is a thing added to something else in order to complete or enhance it. Think about it like building muscle, good supplements can enhance your results, but if you don’t eat right and exercise, supplements are just useless. You can’t just sit on the couch to watch TV, eat potato chips all day and drink some supplements and expect to gain muscle. A supplement is not a miracle. It’s just an addition and before you add it to your diet, you need to get the basic right first, which is dieting and exercise in the case of building muscles. The supplements are not going to lift the heavy weights for you. You do! Back to the case of EK. If you cheat on your keto diet and eat a ton of carbs, and you want to use EK as a way to feel better and less guilty about it, it’s probably not a smart choice because EK won’t do anything for you (more on this later). However, if you are eating LCHF and somehow you’re not feeling your best, EK can be helpful and we will explain more below. Our Approach We own and manage a few growing Keto Facebook groups with tens of thousands of members and we often see the exogenous ketones topic comes up. We have seen a lot of confusion and criticism as well as support from our members. Most of the complaints are normally because of the expensive price of some products, the lack of understanding about what the product is and what it does to your body or because some sellers/promoters try to bend the truth to get you buy their products or recruit you into their multi level marketing team. We recently ran a survey in our private group and asked people if they have used EK before and if it worked for them. Here’s the result: Many peopl Continue reading >>

Babies Thrive Under A Ketogenic Metabolism

Babies Thrive Under A Ketogenic Metabolism

Some people, even some scientists who study ketogenic metabolism, have the idea that ketogenesis is somehow abnormal, or exceptional; an adaptation for emergencies only. We disagree. One reason we think a ketogenic metabolism is normal and desirable, is that human newborns are in ketosis. Despite the moderate sugar content of human breast milk, breastfeeding is particularly ketogenic. This period of development is crucial, and there is extensive brain growth during it. Although the composition of breast milk can be affected by diet [1], it is reasonable to assume that breast milk has always been ketogenic, and this is not an effect of modernisation. When the brain is in its period of highest growth, and when the source of food is likely to be close to what it evolved to be for that period, ketones are used to fuel that growth. If nothing else, this suggests that learning is well supported by a ketogenic metabolism. It is also consistent with the ability of ketogenic diets to treat a variety of seemingly unrelated brain disorders and brain trauma. Newborn infants are in ketosis. This is their normal state. Breastfeeding is particularly ketogenic (compared to formula feeding). Breastfeeding longer (up to a point) is associated with better health outcomes. This suggests the hypothesis that weaning onto a ketogenic diet would be healthier than weaning onto a high-carb diet. (Mark-up ours) Human babies are in ketosis Soon after birth, human babies are in ketosis, and remain so while breastfeeding [2]. They use ketones and fats for energy and for brain growth. When this has been studied, in the first couple of hours after birth, babies aren't immediately in ketosis. There is a short delay [3]. During that brief period before ketogenesis starts, lactate (confusingly not to do Continue reading >>

Achieve Ketosis With A Little Help From Keto-os

Achieve Ketosis With A Little Help From Keto-os

As a follower of the ketogenic diet, you know the magic happens when you’ve reached ketosis and ketones are flowing throughout your body. But what do you do when you can’t quite reach that perfect state? How will you lose weight? The answer lies in a supplement. Starting A Ketogenic Diet The idea behind the ketogenic diet is that you want your body to start burning fat for fuel instead of its regular standby, glucose. To do this, you have to train your body to turn to fat when its “hungry”: you can achieve this by eliminating carbs from your diet and upping your fat intake. A ketogenic diet is like no other because you won’t find one that actively suggests you consume 75% of your daily calories from fat and only 5% from carbohydrates. Even Atkins, which is known as the Low Carb Diet and is often confused with a ketogenic diet, places a greater focus on consuming protein and minimizing fat intake. Reaching Ketosis The goal of the ketogenic diet is to reach a state called ketosis. During this process, your body has no glucose to feed off of, so it switches to fat. It starts by working through the fat that you eat, and when that is gone, it turns to your fat reserves. Very quickly, your body will burn through your excess fat, helping you to quickly and easily lose weight. For most people, ketosis can be reached in 36 to 72 hours. It’s a fairly easy thing to do because all your body has to do is exhaust its supply of glucose and turn to fat. What is really important is the level of ketosis that you need to maintain. In order to effectively burn fat and lose weight, you must have the right level of ketones flowing through your body. It’s when you fall short that you’ll see disappointing results. Using A Supplement to Up Your Ketones Level There are a variety Continue reading >>

Is Keto Safe During Pregnancy? Nutritionists Don't Recommend It

When you find out you're pregnant, a million questions pop into your mind. If it's your first pregnancy, two million questions pop into your mind. One of the most common questions about pregnancy is whether or not you can keep your diet the same as it was before pregnancy. This is an especially important question to ask if you've been on a low-carb diet such as keto. You need to know: is keto safe during pregnancy? According to the official keto website, the keto diet is a low-carb diet where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy rather than carbohydrates. Much like other low-carb, high-fat diets, the keto diet promises significant results when it comes to weight loss. But can a diet that recommends 20 grams or less of carbohydrates a day help provide proper nutrition for you and your baby? According to nutritionist and health coach Erin Lorrain, the answer is no. Lorrain isn't a fan of the keto diet for regular women, let alone pregnant women. "The keto diet essentially tricks your body into thinking you're starving, causing your body to go into ketosis," Lorrain says. She goes on to explain that when you eat carbohydrates, your body produces glucose and insulin — two substances you need to survive. "Glucose and insulin help control your energy levels," Lorrain says. "And in order to maintain a healthy, balanced, diet, you should have healthy, balanced levels of glucose and insulin." This means you shouldn't survive solely on carbohydrates, but you shouldn't cut them out, either. Just like glucose is one of the main sources of energy for your body, glucose is a main source of energy for your growing baby, according to a study done by Yale University. The study goes on to state that to heavily restrict any source of energy during your child's dev Continue reading >>

My Experience With Exogenous Ketones: Tale And Truth

My Experience With Exogenous Ketones: Tale And Truth

97 Comments I woke up the morning of the ceremony with butterflies in my stomach. I’d done the necessary prep. I’d abstained from carbs the past week and food the past 24 hours. I’d performed four consecutive full-body circuit workouts to deplete muscle glycogen, and undergone a liver biopsy to confirm full depletion of liver glycogen. I wasn’t taking any chances. Although I had extensive experience generating endogenous ketones and subsisting on my own body fat, exogenous ketones were another matter entirely. You don’t want to mess around with a holy sacrament without doing due diligence. Holy sacrament? Yes. According to ethnographic accounts from early Arctic explorers who encountered the sacred compound, the exogenous ketone was developed by traditional peoples of the wintry north. No one’s quite sure where it arose first—Siberia, Greenland, Alaska, Lapland. What they do know is that these societies revered the type 1 diabetic, a rare find in the pre-contact Arctic. Using an admittedly grisly and cruel process, these groups would starve the tribe’s diabetic to induce ketoacidosis, harvest the ketone-rich urine, and reduce it slowly to a ketone-rich tar over a wood fire. Tribe shamans would dissolve the tar in pine needle tea and distribute it to members exclusively before hunting trips, warfare, and any other activity requiring optimal physical and mental function to boost energy and improve performance. As Mark Twain famously quipped, “The strongest coffee I ever had was a Laplander’s piss.” So when I showed up to the small building on the edge of town on a rainy evening, I was anxious. What was I in for? The solemn countenances worn by my two guides for the day—Dr. Peter Attia, wearing dark robes and swinging a thurible loaded with burning Continue reading >>
