The only hard and fast rule of health is that health is personal and what works well for one person may not work for someone else. Aside from that rule, there are “frameworks” that seem to benefit large groups of people. One more level down from that are alternative strategies that benefit smaller groups. Ketosis is likely one of those alternative strategies that works well for certain, smaller groups of people. So, right off the bat I want you to understand that Ketosis might not be for everyone. I’m going to lay out the case for potential benefits of Ketosis. If it sounds interesting and beneficial to you, then consider trying it. (see our free cheat sheet to help you). What is Ketosis Ketosis occurs when liver glycogen gets depleted and the body burns fatty acids for fuel. The primary driver of this state is a very low carbohydrate intake. Often, it also requires a low protein, higher fat intake. You can also achieve a state of ketosis by not eating altogether. The creation of ketones is a byproduct of this metabolic state. Ketones are a source of fuel, just as glucose is a source of fuel. Ketones tend to have some added benefits, though. What role does Ketosis play in human health? Ketosis allows our bodies to function in the absence of carbohydrates, both physically and mentally. Instead of burning carbohydrates, or converting protein to glucose, the body burns ketones. This is pretty much a survival mechanism. It allows your body to function in a state of caloric deprivation. This is why ketosis often gets bad press (as it’s linked to “starvation”). Yes. A ketogenic diet can be tricky and adding muscle-building to the goal ups the ante, but it absolutely can be done. Pay close attention to your protein intake. If you're training consistently and heavily then you should be able to consume 1 g/lb body weight without getting knocked out of ketosis. A nominal amount of protein is converted to glycogen so be mindful of not overdoing it. Keeping carbs as low as possible (less than 30g) will help you. You'll also need to do some type of periodic carb-loading. If you're lifting heavy (which you should be) you need the glycogen to support intense physical activity. You can do it either by consuming some extra carbs directly before and/or after a workout, or by doing a 24 to 48 backloading once every 7 to 10 days. As asked, no. Supplements, fasting and exercise (presumably periodically) by themselves may get you into light ketosis or at least put ketones in your bloodstream periodically (if you for example consume some XCT oil) but will only do so for short periods, after which they will get removed when you eat an excess of carbohydrates again and you’ll drop back out of ketosis. Your body’s metabolism will therefore mostly not be prompted to become ketogenically adapted very much, and not nearly as much as when on a strict ketogenic diet. A ketogenic diet keeps carbs low enough to ensure your body is prompted to produce sufficient energy for operation via its ketogenic pathways in earnest, as well as prompting adaptation of tissues and muscles to utilise this fuel source effectively. Which is why the answer to your question is no, getting the full effects of ketosis without following a strict ketogenic diet is (IMHO) not “a thing”. That being said, there are obviously benefits to exercise, there are benefits to fasting and there are potentially benefits to supplements (depending what we’re talking about exactly.) So again, by themselves the things you mention are not an “easy” way to get keto adapted without going on a full ketogenic diet. Studies involving PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans have clearly demonstrated that something unusual happens in the brain of people who are hypnotized. Is That Image Really Black & White or Colour? PET scans of the human brain have shown that when we see an image in colour, specific areas in our brain are activated. Whereas, if we see that same image in black-and-white, other areas, become active. As a result, one study focused on finding out if hypnosis had any scientifically measurable effect on this process. Here volunteers were hypnotized, given a PET scan and then shown either black-and-white or colour images. When the hypnotized subjects were shown a colour image, and then given the suggestion to only see black and white, there was decreased activity in the part of the brain that perceives colour. A fact that clearly demonstrates that hypnosis involves something more than just pretending. There is No Pain Until It Reaches the Brain Another study focused on the fact that pain causes a specific area of the brain to be activated (the anterior cingulate cortex). When subjects were then hypnotized and zapped with a small electrical current, PET scans revealed that there was a significant decrease in the activation of this area of the brain. Where the Imaginary Becomes Real PET scans have also revealed that different parts of the brain are activated when we hear a sound, while other parts are activated when we simply imagine we hear a sound.
