How Many Carbs Can An Average Person Have Each Day To Stay In Nutritional Ketosis?

The answer is highly variable from person to person. A safe way to start is to keep under 20 grams of carbohydrates a day, avoiding all sugars and starches as much as possible. (Save those 20 grams for real food, such as vegetables or small traces of milk sugar in things like cheese that are mostly fat or protein.) This should be low enough to get almost anyone into ketosis within a week or two. Once you have determined that you are in ketosis (using the test strips or breath analyzer), you can try increasing your level of carbs to see if you remain in ketosis. Some people can go quite high (100 grams or more) and still stay in ketosis, as long as they stick with complex carbs like steel-cut oatmeal or beans. However, many who have weight issues have become insulin-resistant, and they may need to stay at very low carb levels to remain in ketosis. I find that I need to keep my carbs below 20 grams at all times to ensure staying in ketosis. If you try for yourself, maybe you will have better luck and be able to eat more. Just keep testing and remember that the strips are not incredibly accurate; if you show no ketones in the morning and some at night, you're probably in ketosis the w Continue reading >>

I've wanted a ketonix for a while but am not going to fork over hundreds of dollars. So I followed some advice and got myself a cheap breathalyzer on ebay. Apparently they don't distinguish between alcohol and acetone.
Now I can measure easily whether or not I am in ketosis anytime I suspect I may have dropped out. The ketostix stopped working for me a long time ago as my body is very well adapted and I don't excrete a lot of measurable ketones. The breathalyzer is not much good for finding your millimoler value of ketones, but then again, by all accounts neither is a ketonix itself. The breathalyzer cost me $12 and you can get them cheaper. In fact, it's only the cheaper ones that work. You can get these breathalyzers as cheap as a few dollars.
Here's the one I used below

That reading above is while fully sober... * I swear * Only trouble is it beeps like crazy when it detects 0.05% or over (the legal alcohol driving limit in australia). I'm sure other models wouldn't beep.

Thanks @yogipete ! This is both interesting and worrisome at the same time!

I may get a cheap one myself, but in the meantime I'd love to see if others can replicate your results.

    My pleasure.

I might also add that the reading is consistent regardless of my method of blowing etc... which is a problem that haunts the ketonix. I've done a few baseline tests on my partnerr who always blows 0 (she's currently non-keto) while I generally blow between .04 and .05 (but in any one moment of the day the reading is always identical regardless of my personal clumsiness in using the meter). I'm looking forward to testing some more non-keto friends.

Is Keto Dieting Safe?

Yes, for most people, the keto diet is safe. Of course, as with any major change in diet or exercise, you should consult with your doctor so that he or she can help you understand whether this diet is safe for YOU. And especially if you are a Type 1 diabetic, I would be concerned about you starting keto without being under close supervision by a doctor because you could go into ketoacidosis which is a dangerous condition. (Ketoacidosis is different than ketosis, which is a safe metabolic condition that your body enters when you cut carbs and raise your fat levels. It’s important not to confuse the two because while ketoacidosis is very dangerous, ketosis is healthy and is actually the goal for most people on the keto diet.) But for most people, the keto diet is a safe way to lose weight, increase energy, improve sleep, help with many autoimmune conditions, and the list goes on and on. The key to getting these benefits, though, is following the basics of keto - which means low carb, moderate protein, and high fat. This is what sets keto apart from many other low carb diets that often promote high protein. On the keto diet, you should start out eating less than 20 net carbs per day Continue reading >>

It seems this subreddit is comprised of a massive portion of people that remain strictly ketogenic while doing IF. To my knowledge, IF and ketosis almost play a similar function.
So would one essentially be doubling down by doing both at the same time? What's the practical difference?

  2. Pork_Chop_Expresss

Before I did Keto, if I ever skipped breakfast I would get light headed and lethargic by 10am. On Keto since my insulin is always low and stable and I'm not running on glucose, doing 18:6 IF is a breeze. I've even done a few days where I only ate dinner because I was busy and not terribly hungry. I used IF to push past a plateau I had hit doing just (lazy) Keto. Either works on their own, but combined they are amazing.

  3. vincentninja68

I only do keto when I'm deliberately cutting in weight. I find keto really useful for reducing my appetite naturally, I never really bothered with calorie counting. I find combining the two is a great fat burner.

How Common Is It For Those On Keto Diets To Go Into Hypoglycemic Ketosis?

As long as you do not have type 1 diabetes, and you are not on hypoglycemic medications, then it is exceedingly rare to have clinically important hypoglycemia. What is interesting is that your blood sugar can and likely will decrease when you are in ketosis. But your body will not react the same way as when you are not in ketosis. The difference, of course, is the presence of ketones in your body. The danger of hypoglycemia is that your body lacks sufficient immediate energy to fuel your brain and your vital organ functions, But when you have adequate level of ketones in your body, those functions are taken care of. Therefore, it matters much less that your glucose levels are lower. In fact, that is part of the benefit of ketosis- lower insulin levels and lower glucose levels. Continue reading >>

Great post! I was on keto for about 4 months with exercising 5 days a week and lost 70 lbs! Fell off the wagon for 3 months and gained 20 back. Your post inspired me to start again...Today! Thank you op!

You didn't gain weight because you stopped doing keto - lots of people can/have/do eat carbs without gaining weight. You regained because you eat more than you need to to maintain your weight. I'm not saying this to be a dick, but because from my own experience, realizing your weight is a reflection of how much you eat (rather than what/when you eat) is a very important first step. If you lose 20lbs and then go back to eating like you did when you were 20lbs heavier, you'll go up again. I lost/regained the same 10-15lbs for years and almost gave up on weight loss, I figured I had tried "everything" and it just wouldn't stick. Once I accepted that I needed to eat less, and keep eating less, it stuck. I'm 70lbs down, and maintained for a couple years (within about 5lbs).
You can do this. You are in charge of your choices, you can reach your goals. Good luck!

This needs to be said over and over again on this sub though. While keto is very effective and has SO SO MANY benefits to it, it's not magic.
CICO is still at work, keto just gives it a nice little push. At a certain point if you quit keto, sure, you might gain some water weight, but not 20 lbs of it. Keto or not, calorie counting is king.
