What Is The Best Way To Get Into Ketosis?
Getting into ketosis is the goal most low carb dieters have. But it requires that you drastically reduce the number of carbohydrates you consume daily. If you are on Atkins induction phase, that allows only 20 grams of carbs! Even when I was strictly following Atkins, it would take me 4 – 6 days to reach ketosis. What’s All The Fuss Over Ketosis? A ketogenic diet causes the overall insulin levels in the body to reduce, which creates favorable conditions for the process of ketosis. When the body is in the state of ketosis, there is a breakdown of fats in the liver, which in turn lead to the formation of ketones. These ketones act as the alternative energy for the body when there is a moderate intake of carbs. How Long Does It Take To Get Into Ketosis? Typically, when consuming a keto diet, your body will go into a state of ketosis within 3 to 6 days. The number of days you will take depends on your daily intake of the net carbohydrates. Also, there is a way to get the body into a state of ketosis in less within several hours. Read on to find out how! The Atkins diet one of the first low carb diets to hit the market in 1972 A ketogenic diet plan restricts the consumption of carbohydrates to at most 20-net carbs daily. However, it is possible to get into ketosis quicker by eating even fewer carbs than what is recommended and increasing your activity level. When you do this, your level of glycogen will reduce, forcing the liver to convert the fats that are in storage to energy. Dr Atkins recommends taking a diet with fewer carbohydrates and staying more active for first three days to enhance the process of ketosis. To get into ketosis faster, Dr Atkins suggested the following list of foods: Seafood, pork, poultry, and beef. Eggs. Prepare them any way you want. Hard aged Continue reading >>

7 Tips To Get Into Ketosis
Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that provides several health benefits. During ketosis, your body converts fat into compounds known as ketones and begins using them as its main source of energy. Studies have found that diets that promote ketosis are highly beneficial for weight loss, due in part to their appetite-suppressing effects (1, 2). Emerging research suggests that ketosis may also be helpful for type 2 diabetes and neurological disorders, among other conditions (3, 4). That being said, achieving a state of ketosis can take some work and planning. It's not just as simple as cutting carbs. Here are 7 effective tips to get into ketosis. Eating a very low-carb diet is by far the most important factor in achieving ketosis. Normally, your cells use glucose, or sugar, as their main source of fuel. However, most of your cells can also use other fuel sources. This includes fatty acids, as well as ketones, which are also known as ketone bodies. Your body stores glucose in your liver and muscles in the form of glycogen. When carb intake is very low, glycogen stores are reduced and levels of the hormone insulin decline. This allows fatty acids to be released from fat stores in your body. Your liver converts some of these fatty acids into the ketone bodies acetone, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate. These ketones can be used as fuel by portions of the brain (5, 6). The level of carb restriction needed to induce ketosis is somewhat individualized. Some people need to limit net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) to 20 grams per day, while others can achieve ketosis while eating twice this amount or more. For this reason, the Atkins diet specifies that carbs be restricted to 20 or fewer grams per day for two weeks to guarantee that ketosis is achieved. After this point, s Continue reading >>

5 Tips To Get Into Ketosis Faster
I've put off writing this post for one reason only. While I've remained low carb at about 100g per day and reaped the benefits of being fat adapted (controlled fasting blood glucose, effortless weight management and hunger control) I'm not currently in ketosis for more than a day at a time and haven't been for several months now. So that leaves me feeling very do as I say, not as I do as I write this, and that doesn't feel very genuine on my part. However, as I'm developing the itch to go at it again like I did in the Fall of last year, I'm hoping that this will motivate me to jump back on the Keto wagon to help me lose about 10lbs. I find that staying low carb at around 100g per day allows me to maintain my weight, but in order to lose, being in ketosis and tracking my caloric intake works best. I will preface this blog post with a little disclaimer, however. These are my opinions and suggestions based on observations I've experienced myself. There's some controversy over things like #2 and #5 and I chose to save those pros and cons for another day when we can really dive into facts, studies, etc. For now, I decided to keep it simple and to the point. So take my suggestions and decide if one, all, or even none of them are for you. Then try them on for size and re-evaluate. Simple as that =) That all said, ketosis is not always an easy task but it is very doable. It's hardest for those coming off a diet full of processed food-like products. So assuming you have already switched to a real food lifestyle, done some research on this topic and have gradually reduced your carbs to about 100 per day, here are 5 tips for entering ketosis faster. #1 watch your carbs This seems like a no brainer, especially if this is your first attempt at getting your body into ketosis. But it' Continue reading >>

10 Tips For Getting Into Nutritional Ketosis For Weight Loss
10 Tips For Getting Into Nutritional Ketosis For Weight Loss What is Nutritional Ketosis? Ketosis is an eating plan where the body uses ketones to fuel the brain and body instead of glucose like most people use when on the SAD (standard American diet). It can be very helpful for blood sugar and consistent energy because fat is a very stable source of fuel. We all have a few million calories of fat we would gladly burn off, right? It takes a while to get into ketosis and it can be elusive if you are not paying close attention. It can be very safe for a period of time (even forever) but each person has to decide what feels compatible with their own lifestyle. Some experts do not think it is an optimal state for athletes but others experts disagree. I think we all have bio hack ourselves to see what feels right. Of course, I believe that the paleo template is good starting place for optimal health but ketosis can be an add-on or tweak for people who get stuck or feel hopeless. It can be a powerful and effective way to lose weight without hunger and many of my friends have had success with it. Always ask your doctor before beginning any new nutrition or weight loss plan. Here are some ways to make it work for you: 1. Eat Less Protein I have a made a handy dandy chart here for figuring out the right amounts for you. Most average ladies need about 50-100 grams, no more, fyi. You have to self experiment a little to find what is right for you. The idea is that protein can turn to sugar if someone eats more than they need, then the sugar spikes blood glucose encouraging fat storage. 2. Eat More Fat I used to see this all the time in clients, I say add more fat and people add a tsp of evoo to their salad, NO!!! I am talking about seeing fat as a food group not a side item. One of the things I was excited to try when I got into Ketosis was holding my breath. I tested before I started the Keto Diet and I could hold my breath for one minute and nine seconds. After I was in Ketosis I laid down on the couch, did a brief breathing exercise (I had not practiced previously) and was able to hold my breath for over 2 minutes! It was really my whole goal in attempting to get into Ketosis to see if that whole hold your breath thing was real. For me, it was. It also helped that during our PaleoFX panels we learned Keto is becoming the norm. I had enough experiences tell me, DO IT, ROB! GO ALL IN! Do it for your health, test it out Continue reading >>

Our body is mainly made up of water and when you are eating a lot of carbs, our body will naturally retain those water. With a ketogenic diet insulin levels are lowered, the results of this is that the kidneys start shedding excess sodium, leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two. This is why a lot of people tend to drop a lot of weight quickly in the early weeks. This is usually just water weight that was retained over time. In this study, which compared low-fat diets vs low-carb diets. People with low-carb diets tend to lose weight 2-3x faster than people on a low-fat diet. The Beginners Guide To Ketosis: Investigating Low-carb, High-fat Eating
The only hard and fast rule of health is that health is personal and what works well for one person may not work for someone else. Aside from that rule, there are “frameworks” that seem to benefit large groups of people. One more level down from that are alternative strategies that benefit smaller groups. Ketosis is likely one of those alternative strategies that works well for certain, smaller groups of people. So, right off the bat I want you to understand that Ketosis might not be for everyone. I’m going to lay out the case for potential benefits of Ketosis. If it sounds interesting and beneficial to you, then consider trying it. (see our free cheat sheet to help you). What is Ketosis Ketosis occurs when liver glycogen gets depleted and the body burns fatty acids for fuel. The primary driver of this state is a very low carbohydrate intake. Often, it also requires a low protein, higher fat intake. You can also achieve a state of ketosis by not eating altogether. The creation of ketones is a byproduct of this metabolic state. Ketones are a source of fuel, just as glucose is a source of fuel. Ketones tend to have some added benefits, though. What role does Ketosis play in human health? Ketosis allows our bodies to function in the absence of carbohydrates, both physically and mentally. Instead of burning carbohydrates, or converting protein to glucose, the body burns ketones. This is pretty much a survival mechanism. It allows your body to function in a state of caloric deprivation. This is why ketosis often gets bad press (as it’s linked to “starvation”). Being a survival mechanism doesn’t make it invalid as a strategy, though. There can still be potential benefits to be had. Let’s cover a few of them… Ketosis and Accelerated Fat Loss Being in ketosis Continue reading >>

How To Get Into Ketosis Fast | (7 Keto Hacks) To Enter Ketosis Quickly
How To Get Into Ketosis Fast The biggest question I get is how to get into ketosis fast? When I first started my ketogenic lifestyle two years ago, I was just trying to lose weight “period”. I didn’t understand being in a state of nutritional ketosis let alone being fat adapted. For those reasons, I failed miserably trying different types of the ketogenic diet like CKD (Cyclic Keto Diet). It was painful eating low carb during the week because all I could think about was refeeding on the weekend. Was it because I was doing it wrong? Or maybe I shouldn’t be doing it at all…Hmmm It seemed like every Monday and Tuesday I was experiencing keto flu all over again…lol… It was horrible repeating that week after week. Basically, if I was reaching ketosis by the end of the week, I was kicking myself out of it come the weekend! But like I said, I didn’t understand what ketosis was at the beginning stages so I had to learn the hard way. So I’m grateful you found this as I want to inspire you to give your all… Sorry about the rant… Let’s get down to the Dirty! When you’re in a state of ketosis your liver oxidizes fat into energy molecules that the brain then utilizes as fuel. To be in ketosis you have to be producing 0.5 mmol/L – 5.0 mmol/L of ketones which you can test using a glucometer. Below I’m going to give you some tips that have helped people that I’ve worked with get into ketosis fast. Get to Bed Early Sleep is the most important factor on a ketogenic diet because this is when the body produces the most ketones. Basically, you body repairs at night from releasing growth hormones. Here are a few reasons to get to sleep on time… 1: You don’t want high cortisol levels at night because it can cause an inflammatory state and spike your glucose Continue reading >>

Using The Fat Fasting Technique
The fat fast is a technique brought by Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution – used by people who are metabolically resistant and have trouble with their induction. Let me first say that fat fasting should be used in 2 situations and 2 situations only: Breaking through a 2 week or longer plateau. Inducing yourself into ketosis quicker, whether you are just starting keto or you had a cheat day. If you’re the type of person that loses weight easily and you are NOT hitting a plateau, then fat fasting should NOT be used. It can be potentially dangerous for someone that is not metabolically resistant, or for someone that is not on a plateau. You should not fat fast consistently. Like I said, it is only for people starting a ketogenic diet and want to be inducted into ketosis faster, or for people that are on a long (2 weeks or more) plateau. Understanding the Fat Fast The lack of carbohydrates and protein will allow your body to depreciate your glycogen stores quicker, also allowing your body to go after the fat stores, like we want it to, to use as fuel. Fat fasting will force the body to undergo lipolysis, so that it burns up fat that is stored in the body. Lipolysis is a process involved in the breakdown of fats, converting triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. The longer you fast, the more of these free fatty acids will be released. Why is this important? Well fatty acids are used by the liver to create small amounts of ketone bodies, and used as fuel. Lipolysis cannot happen if there is a significant amount of glucose coming in, but since 80% – 90% of what you will be eating are fats, you don’t need to worry about excess protein or carbs converting into glucose. What the Fat Fast Is So, what exactly is a fat fast? It’s eating between 1000 and 1200 calo Continue reading >>

How To Get Into Ketosis Fast: Your 3-point Checklist For Max Fat-burning
So you're thinking about "going keto". I like your style. Pretty soon you’re going to experience the superhuman cognitive performance, energy, and fat-loss you’ve only read about. I won't lie to you, there's going to be a "break-in" period while your body adjusts to this metabolic shift. Which is why we wanted to find the best and fastest way to transition into ketosis. And what better way than ask the keto expert himself, Dom D'Agostino (who joined us on OPP episode 75) Dom whipped up a protocol designed specifically so you can achieve ketosis as fast and efficient as humanly possible. The Expert's Guide to Achieving Ketosis Dr. D’Agostino may in fact be the world’s premier authority on ketogenic diets. He's an associate professor in the department of molecular pharmacology and physiology at the University of South Florida. He is also a senior research scientist at the Center for Human and Machine Cognition. And the distillation of his experience and knowledge comes down to a three-tiered approach to rapid ketosis. Each of the actionable strategies below are effective on their own, but together, this trifecta will turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Step 1: Fasting To Get Into Ketosis Intermittent fasting by definition means not eating anything for a given period of time. Contrary to what the fitness "experts" often cite as gospel, skipping breakfast will not cause your muscles to shrivel up into little raisins. It doesn't mean you'll lose strengths either. Fasting is a powerful tool to achieve ketosis because it drives insulin levels down. When combined with a low-carb, high-fat diet, fasting pushes the body even more towards using fatty acids for fuel, and eventually you'll start producing ketones -- the primary fuel source for ketosis. Fasting Protoco Continue reading >>

Lose Weight By Achieving Optimal Ketosis
Do you want to lose weight? Here’s number 16 of my 18 best tips. All of the published tips can be found on the How to Lose Weight page. Before we get started, here’s a short recap of the tips so far: The first and most crucial piece of advice was to choose a low-carb diet. The next were eating when hungry, eating real food, eating only when hungry, measuring progress wisely, being persistent, avoiding fruit, beer and artificial sweeteners, review your medications, stressing less and sleeping more, eating less dairy and nut products, stocking up on vitamins and minerals, using intermittent fasting and finally, exercising smart. This is number sixteen: 16. Get into optimal ketosis Warning: Not recommended for type 1 diabetics, see below. We’ve now arrived at tip number 16. If you’re still having trouble losing weight, despite following the 15 pieces of advice listed above, it might be a good idea to bring out the heavy artillery: optimal ketosis. Many people stalling at weight plateaus while on a low carb diet have found optimal ketosis helpful. It’s what can melt the fat off once again. So how does this work? A quick run-through: The first tip was to eat low carb. This is because a low-carb diet lowers your levels of the fat-storing hormone insulin, allowing your fat deposits to shrink and release their stored energy. This tends to cause you to want to consume less calories than you expend – without hunger – and lose weight. Several of the tips mentioned above are about fine-tuning your diet to better this effect. Keep Yourself In Ketosis
When talking about a Grain Brain lifestyle, and the very similar ketogenic diet, it’s frequently mentioned that we are aiming to keep our bodies in ketosis. However, if you’re new to my work, it may be that you’re not exactly sure what ketosis is, or why we should be worrying about getting our body into this state. Allow me to explain. Ketones are a special type of fat that can stimulate the pathways that enhance the growth of new neural networks in the brain. A ketogenic diet is one that is high in fats, and this diet has been a tool of researchers for years, used notably in a 2005 study on Parkinson’s patients finding an improvement in symptoms after just 28 days. The improvements were on par with those made possible via medication and brain surgery. Other research has shown the ketogenic diet to be remarkably effective in treating some forms of epilepsy, and even brain tumors. Ketones do more than just that though. They increase glutathione, a powerful, brain-protective antioxidant. Ketones facilitate the production of mitochondria, one of the most important actors in the coordinated production that is the human body. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our bodies are said to enter ketosis at the point when blood sugar levels are low and liver glycogen are no longer available to produce glucose as a fuel for cellular energy production. At this point, not only is the body doing the natural thing, and burning off fat, it’s also powering up the brain with a super efficient fuel. We can jump start ourselves into ketosis with a brief fast, allowing our body to quickly burn through the carbs that are in our system, and turn to fat for fuel. A ketogenic diet is one that derives around 80% or more of of its calories from fat, and the rest from carbs and prote Continue reading >>

Water Fasting Ketosis Is Where The Fat Burn Heaven Begins
In this guide, you will learn everything you need to know about water fasting ketosis. I'll explain how water fasting can help you reach your absolute highest possible fat burn rates, which is easily the single biggest benefit of ketosis. You'll also see the science on how long it actually takes before you can enter ketosis during a water fast. You'll also learn about one of the most dangerous problems of water fasting ketosis. I'll also tell you why it is a very good idea to avoid one of the most common mistakes people make once they already reach ketosis during a water fast. Now that you know what you're getting yourself into, here's a quick overview of everything that's covered in this guide: The single biggest benefit of water fasting ketosis Simply put, ketosis is a state where you get to enjoy your absolutely highest possible fat burn rates. If you're on your regular diet, your body can draw energy from a couple of different sources (so not just from your body fat reserves). Those other, non-fat energy sources are the main reason why your fat burn rates stay on the low end, even if you start eating less food. But during a water fast, because you're eating no food at all, those other energy sources in your body will be completely wiped out after a while. Once that happens, your body will enter full ketosis, and in that state of full ketosis, your body will have no choice but to rely almost exclusively on your body fat reserves. With no other energy sources available, ketosis will trigger some pretty amazing fat burn rates in your body. Water fasting is one of the fastest ways to reach that state of super high fat burn. And a lot of people do a water fast just for this reason. There's only one problem with reaching ketosis through water fasting. PRO TIP: A different Continue reading >>
