10 Tips For Getting Into Nutritional Ketosis For Weight Loss What is Nutritional Ketosis? Ketosis is an eating plan where the body uses ketones to fuel the brain and body instead of glucose like most people use when on the SAD (standard American diet). It can be very helpful for blood sugar and consistent energy because fat is a very stable source of fuel. We all have a few million calories of fat we would gladly burn off, right? It takes a while to get into ketosis and it can be elusive if you are not paying close attention. It can be very safe for a period of time (even forever) but each person has to decide what feels compatible with their own lifestyle. Some experts do not think it is an optimal state for athletes but others experts disagree. I think we all have bio hack ourselves to see what feels right. Of course, I believe that the paleo template is good starting place for optimal health but ketosis can be an add-on or tweak for people who get stuck or feel hopeless. It can be a powerful and effective way to lose weight without hunger and many of my friends have had success with it. Always ask your doctor before beginning any new nutrition or weight loss plan. Here are some ways to make it work for you: 1. Eat Less Protein I have a made a handy dandy chart here for figuring out the right amounts for you. Most average ladies need about 50-100 grams, no more, fyi. You have to self experiment a little to find what is right for you. The idea is that protein can turn to sugar if someone eats more than they need, then the sugar spikes blood glucose encouraging fat storage. 2. Eat More Fat I used to see this all the time in clients, I say add more fat and people add a tsp of evoo to their salad, NO!!! I am talking about seeing fat as a food group not a side item. The Top Tips For Getting Into Ketosis Quickly

Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body starts producing ketone out of fat and your body converts fat into compounds known as ketones and begins using them as its main source of energy. So, instead of your body using carbs for energy, it will shoot for fats. Ketogenic diets have become incredibly popular in the recent years with more and more people starting to practice diets such as Atkins, Keto, Low-carb, Slow-carb and much more ketogenic related diets. The first step to starting off a ketogenic diet is to put your body into a ketosis state. One of the hardest things that beginners struggle with is getting themselves into ketosis. In this article, we’ll cover the top tips for getting your body into ketosis and the health benefits behind a ketogenic diet. Weight Loss There are a lot of health benefits associated with ketosis. One of the most common ones is weight loss. Most people put their body into ketosis to speed up their weight loss process. One of the reasons for this is that ketogenic diets tend to get rid of excess water from the body. Our body is mainly made up of water and when you are eating a lot of carbs, our body will naturally retain those water. With a ketogenic diet insulin levels are lowered, the results of this is that the kidneys start shedding excess sodium, leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two. This is why a lot of people tend to drop a lot of weight quickly in the early weeks. This is usually just water weight that was retained over time. In this study, which compared low-fat diets vs low-carb diets. People with low-carb diets tend to lose weight 2-3x faster than people on a low-fat diet. How To Get Back Into Ketosis Quickly After Cheat Day

How To Get Back Into Ketosis Quickly After Cheat Day

For those of you on a low carb diet (LCD) who are actively trying to stay in Ketosis, cheating is a BIG deal. Unlike other diet plans, you cant simply make up for that piece of cake or bowl of spaghetti with an extra workout for the week. A cheat day takes much longer to recover from and it cab be quite frustrating to recover from. Some people need to plan scheduled cheat days. It helps them stay on track and not go stir crazy trying to be strict. Some plan it every 40 days, 90 days or after a certain amount of weight loss. This is a perfectly acceptable method to try if you are truly missing your carbs and treats. Just be aware that it can take days or weeks to recover at times and get back into ketosis quickly. Some people start to feel ill and have to re go through “carb flu”, fatigue, and hunger issues. Others do just fine carb cycling. Some just don’t want to cheat at all because of these issues. So whether it is a planned cheat day, and accidental carb overdose, or a part of your fat burn/muscle building cycle, here are a few tips to help get back on track after throwing yourself out of ketosis. 1. Hide your scale You are almost guaranteed to make the scale go up after a big cheat. I typically experience a 3lb weight gain when this happens. It is not necessarily weight gain but more water weight. Your best bet is to hide your scale for a week and not even bother to check it until your back into ketosis for a few days. 2. Fast This is going to be the tough part, but hear me out. Your body needs to deplete those carbohydrates it just stored for fuel. Fasting is a decent way to get that done. If you cheated around dinner time, try skipping breakfast and lunch the next day. The most effective fast would be a 24 hour fast, but even a half day will help. You are go Continue reading >>

5 Tips To Get Into Ketosis Faster

5 Tips To Get Into Ketosis Faster

I've put off writing this post for one reason only. While I've remained low carb at about 100g per day and reaped the benefits of being fat adapted (controlled fasting blood glucose, effortless weight management and hunger control) I'm not currently in ketosis for more than a day at a time and haven't been for several months now. So that leaves me feeling very do as I say, not as I do as I write this, and that doesn't feel very genuine on my part. However, as I'm developing the itch to go at it again like I did in the Fall of last year, I'm hoping that this will motivate me to jump back on the Keto wagon to help me lose about 10lbs. I find that staying low carb at around 100g per day allows me to maintain my weight, but in order to lose, being in ketosis and tracking my caloric intake works best. I will preface this blog post with a little disclaimer, however. These are my opinions and suggestions based on observations I've experienced myself. There's some controversy over things like #2 and #5 and I chose to save those pros and cons for another day when we can really dive into facts, studies, etc. For now, I decided to keep it simple and to the point. So take my suggestions and decide if one, all, or even none of them are for you. Then try them on for size and re-evaluate. Simple as that =) That all said, ketosis is not always an easy task but it is very doable. It's hardest for those coming off a diet full of processed food-like products. So assuming you have already switched to a real food lifestyle, done some research on this topic and have gradually reduced your carbs to about 100 per day, here are 5 tips for entering ketosis faster. #1 watch your carbs This seems like a no brainer, especially if this is your first attempt at getting your body into ketosis. But it' Continue reading >>

Tim Ferriss – 3 Day Fast Protocol Details – Get Into Ketosis Quicker And Easier

In Tim Ferriss’ new book Tools of Titans he puts forward a method to optimize the process of fasting. In his typical 80/20 style, he aims to get the most benefits, in the least amount of time. His recommended fast is conducted in a 3 day period, spanning Thursday evening to Sunday evening. 3-Day Fast Overview Stop eating Thursday night Friday morning go for a long walk to accelerate your transition into ketosis Friday and Saturday stay fasted, and consume moderate amounts of exogenous ketones and MCT oil (as needed), to give you a boost while you’re keto adapting. Sunday evening you break the fast. Here’s the process in more detail if you don’t have Tools of Titans to hand: Thursday Evening Eat a low carbohydrate dinner around 6pm. Make that the last meal of the day. Go to bed as normal. Friday Morning Drink some caffeine if needed, then get out the door and walk within 30 minutes of waking. Bring at least 1 litre of water, with some added salt (to prevent headaches/cramping), and sip as you walk. Walk for 3-4 hours(!). Filling up/buying more water as needed. Arrange phone calls for this time, to make the time productive. The idea behind the walk is that you use up your glycogen stores, forcing your body to move quicker into deep ketosis. The quicker you get into ketosis, the less time you spend feeling sub-optimal, and the less potential muscle wastage. Friday Day (post walk) Consume exogenous ketones or MCT oil 2-3 times throughout the day, where necessary. Tim primarily uses KetoCaNa & KetoForce as exogenous ketone sources. Both these products contain 11.7g of Beta-hydroxybuterate per serving, and each contain 16 servings. The key difference is that KetoForce is an unflavoured (alkaline) liquid. And KetoCaNa is an orange flavoured powder you can mix into wate Continue reading >>

By prolonging the time in which you eat your first meal, your body begins to enter a fat-burning stage (ketosis). I emphasize intermittent fasting with the ketogenic diet because it speeds up the whole process in depleting your glycogen storages. My recommendation is to skip breakfast completely. A popular protocol that many people praise is the 16:8 hour fast. This means y Continue reading >>

8 Tips And Tricks For How To Get Into Ketosis Fast

Ketosis is a natural biological process that plays a key role in health. The process has become particularly relevant in a specific type of diet known as a ketosis diet or a ketogenic diet, which is powerful for weight loss. While your body is in ketosis it relies on fat as the main source of energy by first converting it to compounds known as ketones. The ketones themselves are thought to help suppress the appetite and may be a key reason why the diet approach helps with weight loss (1,2). There are a number of different signs that you are in ketosis and ketogenic diets rely on these and your diet patterns to keep you in ketosis. But, if you’re going to rely on ketosis, then you have to figure out how to get into ketosis fast – and stay there. Achieving that is absolutely critical to get the health benefits of ketosis and to lose weight. More than anything, your carb intake influences whether or not you are in ketosis. This is true when you are first trying to reach ketosis and also as you are trying to stay there. The reason for this is that the body preferentially uses glucose as its main source of energy. This glucose comes from the carbs that you eat. So, when you are consuming carbs regularly, your body tends to use these as the main source of fuel. However, if you dramatically decrease your carbs, then your body is forced to switch to other fuel sources. Specifically, this results in the production of ketone bodies, which then act as fuel (3,4). To decrease your carb intake, you can rely on low carb vegetables and fruits, as well as recipes specifically designed for low carb or ketosis diets. For example, the following lists are great places to begin. Now, the precise number of carbs that you can consume and remain in ketosis varies from one person to the nex Continue reading >>

Keep Yourself In Ketosis

Keep Yourself In Ketosis

When talking about a Grain Brain lifestyle, and the very similar ketogenic diet, it’s frequently mentioned that we are aiming to keep our bodies in ketosis. However, if you’re new to my work, it may be that you’re not exactly sure what ketosis is, or why we should be worrying about getting our body into this state. Allow me to explain. Ketones are a special type of fat that can stimulate the pathways that enhance the growth of new neural networks in the brain. A ketogenic diet is one that is high in fats, and this diet has been a tool of researchers for years, used notably in a 2005 study on Parkinson’s patients finding an improvement in symptoms after just 28 days. The improvements were on par with those made possible via medication and brain surgery. Other research has shown the ketogenic diet to be remarkably effective in treating some forms of epilepsy, and even brain tumors. Ketones do more than just that though. They increase glutathione, a powerful, brain-protective antioxidant. Ketones facilitate the production of mitochondria, one of the most important actors in the coordinated production that is the human body. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our bodies are said to enter ketosis at the point when blood sugar levels are low and liver glycogen are no longer available to produce glucose as a fuel for cellular energy production. At this point, not only is the body doing the natural thing, and burning off fat, it’s also powering up the brain with a super efficient fuel. We can jump start ourselves into ketosis with a brief fast, allowing our body to quickly burn through the carbs that are in our system, and turn to fat for fuel. A ketogenic diet is one that derives around 80% or more of of its calories from fat, and the rest from carbs and prote Continue reading >>

If you’ve read about the Keto Diet and are interested in getting into Ketosis quickly, this post will help you understand exactly what you can do to get into Ketosis. If you’re unsure about what the Keto Diet is read this first. The first time attempting the Keto Diet I hated it. I got the “carb flu” and felt off. I was tired (I don’t often feel tired) and my stomach was (rolling / gurgling / angry) the whole time. I lasted one week for my first attempt and I felt miserable! I decided it’s Paleo or nothing. THEN I read Tim Ferris’ “Tools of Titans” when it first came out. The first section of the book… it felt like an informercial for Ketosis. It was compelling. I needed to try again but this time research a lot more than I had the first time. After reading countless blog posts and researching methods and what is actually taking place in your body while in Ketosis, I was excited to try again. One of the things I was excited to try when I got into Ketosis was holding my breath. I tested before I started the Keto Diet and I could hold my breath for one minute and nine seconds. After I was in Ketosis I laid down on the couch, did a brief breathing exercise (I had not practiced previously) and was able to hold my breath for over 2 minutes! It was really my whole goal in attempting to get into Ketosis to see if that whole hold your breath thing was real. For me, it was. It also helped that during our PaleoFX panels we learned Keto is becoming the norm. I had enough experiences tell me, DO IT, ROB! GO ALL IN! Do it for your health, test it out Continue reading >>

5 Simple Steps To Get Into Ketosis

5 Simple Steps To Get Into Ketosis

I think almost everyone agrees with me when I say that the ketogenic diet is probably one of the most complex and difficult eating plans out there. Even when you’re not on a diet or trying to lose weight you still have to bring a lot of attention to detail. Getting into ketosis isn’t as important as we would think, but there are still 5 simple steps we can make to get into a ketotic state. What Needs to Happen The conditions of nutritional ketosis are: Low blood sugar levels (about <85 mg/dl) Low insulin And because of that there are going to be: Higher glucagon, which is released by the liver, in response to low insulin, to increase the amount of fatty acids in the blood stream. High serum blood ketone levels, with the optimal zone being in between 0.5 and 3.0 mMols. Here are the 5 simple steps to get into ketosis. Step #1 Do a 24-Hour Fast Ketosis is the by-product of a prolonged period of fasting. After your liver glycogen stores have been depleted already after an overnight fast, the liver then begins to create more ketone bodies. After 2-3 days of fasting, you’ll be definitely in ketosis. Your brain will adapt to using ketone bodies and gets about 75% of its energy from fat. Overall, the body’s glucose demands and protein catabolism get reduced to a bare minimum. However, to get into ketosis we don’t necessarily have to abstain from eating that long. We’re already in mild ketosis in the morning and doing a 24-hour fast will increase our ketogenic pathways by a significant amount. Step #2 Start Eating Low Carb Ketogenic Meals Once you finish your 24-hours, you can start eating keto foods. Make your first meal something extremely ketogenic, meaning: Ultra-low carbs – cruciferous vegetables, like spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chard. Your Continue reading >>

Using The Fat Fasting Technique

Using The Fat Fasting Technique

The fat fast is a technique brought by Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution – used by people who are metabolically resistant and have trouble with their induction. Let me first say that fat fasting should be used in 2 situations and 2 situations only: Breaking through a 2 week or longer plateau. Inducing yourself into ketosis quicker, whether you are just starting keto or you had a cheat day. If you’re the type of person that loses weight easily and you are NOT hitting a plateau, then fat fasting should NOT be used. It can be potentially dangerous for someone that is not metabolically resistant, or for someone that is not on a plateau. You should not fat fast consistently. Like I said, it is only for people starting a ketogenic diet and want to be inducted into ketosis faster, or for people that are on a long (2 weeks or more) plateau. Understanding the Fat Fast The lack of carbohydrates and protein will allow your body to depreciate your glycogen stores quicker, also allowing your body to go after the fat stores, like we want it to, to use as fuel. Fat fasting will force the body to undergo lipolysis, so that it burns up fat that is stored in the body. Lipolysis is a process involved in the breakdown of fats, converting triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. The longer you fast, the more of these free fatty acids will be released. Why is this important? Well fatty acids are used by the liver to create small amounts of ketone bodies, and used as fuel. Lipolysis cannot happen if there is a significant amount of glucose coming in, but since 80% – 90% of what you will be eating are fats, you don’t need to worry about excess protein or carbs converting into glucose. What the Fat Fast Is So, what exactly is a fat fast? It’s eating between 1000 and 1200 calo Continue reading >>
