Many of us, at some point in our lives, have some amount of ketones in our blood. We just don’t know about it. For example, if you ate your last meal at 3 p.m. and your next meal is 11 a.m. in the next day, then it is very likely that your body started to produce ketone bodies. A minor state of ketosis – since you have been fasting for 20 hours. This is your body’s superpower, this is how your body deals with lack of food. However, most Continue reading >>

The Beginners Guide To Ketosis: Investigating Low-carb, High-fat Eating

The Beginners Guide To Ketosis: Investigating Low-carb, High-fat Eating

The only hard and fast rule of health is that health is personal and what works well for one person may not work for someone else. Aside from that rule, there are “frameworks” that seem to benefit large groups of people. One more level down from that are alternative strategies that benefit smaller groups. Ketosis is likely one of those alternative strategies that works well for certain, smaller groups of people. So, right off the bat I want you to understand that Ketosis might not be for everyone. I’m going to lay out the case for potential benefits of Ketosis. If it sounds interesting and beneficial to you, then consider trying it. (see our free cheat sheet to help you). What is Ketosis Ketosis occurs when liver glycogen gets depleted and the body burns fatty acids for fuel. The primary driver of this state is a very low carbohydrate intake. Often, it also requires a low protein, higher fat intake. You can also achieve a state of ketosis by not eating altogether. The creation of ketones is a byproduct of this metabolic state. Ketones are a source of fuel, just as glucose is a source of fuel. Ketones tend to have some added benefits, though. What role does Ketosis play in human health? Ketosis allows our bodies to function in the absence of carbohydrates, both physically and mentally. Instead of burning carbohydrates, or converting protein to glucose, the body burns ketones. This is pretty much a survival mechanism. It allows your body to function in a state of caloric deprivation. This is why ketosis often gets bad press (as it’s linked to “starvation”). Being a survival mechanism doesn’t make it invalid as a strategy, though. There can still be potential benefits to be had. Let’s cover a few of them… Ketosis and Accelerated Fat Loss Being in ketosis Continue reading >>

How To Get Back Into Ketosis Quickly After Cheat Day

How To Get Back Into Ketosis Quickly After Cheat Day

For those of you on a low carb diet (LCD) who are actively trying to stay in Ketosis, cheating is a BIG deal. Unlike other diet plans, you cant simply make up for that piece of cake or bowl of spaghetti with an extra workout for the week. A cheat day takes much longer to recover from and it cab be quite frustrating to recover from. Some people need to plan scheduled cheat days. It helps them stay on track and not go stir crazy trying to be strict. Some plan it every 40 days, 90 days or after a certain amount of weight loss. This is a perfectly acceptable method to try if you are truly missing your carbs and treats. Just be aware that it can take days or weeks to recover at times and get back into ketosis quickly. Some people start to feel ill and have to re go through “carb flu”, fatigue, and hunger issues. Others do just fine carb cycling. Some just don’t want to cheat at all because of these issues. So whether it is a planned cheat day, and accidental carb overdose, or a part of your fat burn/muscle building cycle, here are a few tips to help get back on track after throwing yourself out of ketosis. 1. Hide your scale You are almost guaranteed to make the scale go up after a big cheat. I typically experience a 3lb weight gain when this happens. It is not necessarily weight gain but more water weight. Your best bet is to hide your scale for a week and not even bother to check it until your back into ketosis for a few days. 2. Fast This is going to be the tough part, but hear me out. Your body needs to deplete those carbohydrates it just stored for fuel. Fasting is a decent way to get that done. If you cheated around dinner time, try skipping breakfast and lunch the next day. The most effective fast would be a 24 hour fast, but even a half day will help. You are go Continue reading >>

7 Tips To Get Into Ketosis

7 Tips To Get Into Ketosis

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that provides several health benefits. During ketosis, your body converts fat into compounds known as ketones and begins using them as its main source of energy. Studies have found that diets that promote ketosis are highly beneficial for weight loss, due in part to their appetite-suppressing effects (1, 2). Emerging research suggests that ketosis may also be helpful for type 2 diabetes and neurological disorders, among other conditions (3, 4). That being said, achieving a state of ketosis can take some work and planning. It's not just as simple as cutting carbs. Here are 7 effective tips to get into ketosis. Eating a very low-carb diet is by far the most important factor in achieving ketosis. Normally, your cells use glucose, or sugar, as their main source of fuel. However, most of your cells can also use other fuel sources. This includes fatty acids, as well as ketones, which are also known as ketone bodies. Your body stores glucose in your liver and muscles in the form of glycogen. When carb intake is very low, glycogen stores are reduced and levels of the hormone insulin decline. This allows fatty acids to be released from fat stores in your body. Your liver converts some of these fatty acids into the ketone bodies acetone, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate. These ketones can be used as fuel by portions of the brain (5, 6). The level of carb restriction needed to induce ketosis is somewhat individualized. Some people need to limit net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) to 20 grams per day, while others can achieve ketosis while eating twice this amount or more. For this reason, the Atkins diet specifies that carbs be restricted to 20 or fewer grams per day for two weeks to guarantee that ketosis is achieved. After this point, s Continue reading >>

8 Tips And Tricks For How To Get Into Ketosis Fast

Ketosis is a natural biological process that plays a key role in health. The process has become particularly relevant in a specific type of diet known as a ketosis diet or a ketogenic diet, which is powerful for weight loss. While your body is in ketosis it relies on fat as the main source of energy by first converting it to compounds known as ketones. The ketones themselves are thought to help suppress the appetite and may be a key reason why the diet approach helps with weight loss (1,2). There are a number of different signs that you are in ketosis and ketogenic diets rely on these and your diet patterns to keep you in ketosis. But, if you’re going to rely on ketosis, then you have to figure out how to get into ketosis fast – and stay there. Achieving that is absolutely critical to get the health benefits of ketosis and to lose weight. More than anything, your carb intake influences whether or not you are in ketosis. This is true when you are first trying to reach ketosis and also as you are trying to stay there. The reason for this is that the body preferentially uses glucose as its main source of energy. This glucose comes from the carbs that you eat. So, when you are consuming carbs regularly, your body tends to use these as the main source of fuel. However, if you dramatically decrease your carbs, then your body is forced to switch to other fuel sources. Specifically, this results in the production of ketone bodies, which then act as fuel (3,4). To decrease your carb intake, you can rely on low carb vegetables and fruits, as well as recipes specifically designed for low carb or ketosis diets. For example, the following lists are great places to begin. Now, the precise number of carbs that you can consume and remain in ketosis varies from one person to the nex Continue reading >>

How To Get Into Ketosis In 24 Hours

How To Get Into Ketosis In 24 Hours

So you want to get into Ketosis in 24 hours? This is not as simple as some people think but it certainly is possible. The other thing is also that everyone reacts differently. Some people enter the state of ketosis faster than others. People with a higher or faster metabolism will enter ketosis faster, this are the same people that are already thinner so no luck for you if you are more than just a couple of pounds overweight. Here is an article that describes what ketosis is on Wikipedia. And what is the main reason to enter Ketosis as fast as possible? Well I saw some articles stating that people want to lose excess fat fast but this is just silly. A couple of hours of difference won’t make any difference to how much weight you lose in one month. You must be realistic, yes you can lose weight fast on a keto diet but it will not happen over night and first couple of days you will be mostly losing water weight. No the main reason to enter ketosis fast is because it is not pleasent to be glycogen depleted and not yet be in the state of ketosis. You feel sleepy, without energy, some people even have headaches or mild flu symptoms. How ever you look at this it is not pleasant until your body starts producing ketones and you can effectively start using fat as the primary energy source. So you want to progress through this period as fast as possible and not be stuck in this middle place for days or even weeks. One other thing I must point out is also that we are talking about being in ketosis and not being fully keto adapted. You enter ketosis when your body starts producing ketones above a specified level, being fully keto adapted means that your body is full adapted to use fat as your primary energy source and that production of certain enzymes in your body adapted. 10 Tips For Getting Into Nutritional Ketosis For Weight Loss

10 Tips For Getting Into Nutritional Ketosis For Weight Loss What is Nutritional Ketosis? Ketosis is an eating plan where the body uses ketones to fuel the brain and body instead of glucose like most people use when on the SAD (standard American diet). It can be very helpful for blood sugar and consistent energy because fat is a very stable source of fuel. We all have a few million calories of fat we would gladly burn off, right? It takes a while to get into ketosis and it can be elusive if you are not paying close attention. It can be very safe for a period of time (even forever) but each person has to decide what feels compatible with their own lifestyle. Some experts do not think it is an optimal state for athletes but others experts disagree. I think we all have bio hack ourselves to see what feels right. Of course, I believe that the paleo template is good starting place for optimal health but ketosis can be an add-on or tweak for people who get stuck or feel hopeless. It can be a powerful and effective way to lose weight without hunger and many of my friends have had success with it. Always ask your doctor before beginning any new nutrition or weight loss plan. Here are some ways to make it work for you: 1. Eat Less Protein I have a made a handy dandy chart here for figuring out the right amounts for you. Most average ladies need about 50-100 grams, no more, fyi. You have to self experiment a little to find what is right for you. The idea is that protein can turn to sugar if someone eats more than they need, then the sugar spikes blood glucose encouraging fat storage. 2. Eat More Fat I used to see this all the time in clients, I say add more fat and people add a tsp of evoo to their salad, NO!!! I am talking about seeing fat as a food group not a side item. Starting Tips On How To Get Into Ketosis In 24 Hours Start Intermittent Fasting (IF) I’ve mentioned it in a previous post, here. Intermittent fasting is like peanut butter and jelly, like batman and robin, like a fork and spoon, like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump (just kidding). But seriously. By prolonging the time in which you eat your first meal, your body begins to enter a fat-burning stage (ketosis). I emphasize intermittent fasting with the ketogenic diet because it speeds up the whole process in depleting your glycogen storages. My recommendation is to skip breakfast completely. A popular protocol that many people praise is the 16:8 hour fast. This means y Continue reading >>

Intermittent Fasting, or “IF”, is a relatively new craze that is used as a supplement to your diet. It revolves around the timing of your food intake, and can have some benefits in the long run. There are quite a few people misinformed on fasting, so we’ll clear that up and explain how intermittent fasting can be useful. On your ketogenic journey, it’s important to know that your success is not only dictated by eating enough fat and protein and restricting carbs. When you eat, how often you eat, and how much you eat have a substantial impact on your health and function as well. If your results have plateaued or you are thinking of starting a ketogenic diet, this article will provide you with a way to lose more fat and improve energy levels called intermittent fasting. If you need to learn how to calculate your macros, visit our Keto Calculator. Fasting isn’t required to lose weight on a ketogenic diet. If it doesn’t work for you, then do not force yourself to fast. Restricting yourself unrealistically is pointless – it’s not worth it if it makes you unhappy. There are 2 basic terms we need to understand here first: feeding and fasting. Your body is in a feeding state when you are eating your food, and you are in a fasting state when you are between your meals. The Approach Skipped meals. This is when you skip over a meal to induce extra time of fasting. Usually people choose breakfast, but others prefer to skip lunch. Eating windows. Usually this condenses your entire macronutrient intake between a 4 and 7 hour window. The rest of the time you are in a fasting state. 24-48 hour cleanse. This is where you go into extended fasting periods, and do not eat for 1-2 days. I don’t recommend that you go straight for a 1-2 day fast, but begin by restricting you Continue reading >>

Ketosis vs. keto-adapted There is a lot of confusion all over the Internet about being in ketosis vs being keto-adapted (fat adapted). Some people use them interchangeably without fully understanding the meaning behind them. Let’s clarify both terms and find out which one we are trying to achieve today. What is ketosis? Ketosis is a metabolic process that is activated when our body doesn’t have enough glycogen (derived from carbs) for our cells to burn for energy. Instead, it starts to convert fat deposits (adipose) to energy. As a part of this process, it makes ketones. Ketone bodies are water-soluble molecules that are produced by our liver from fatty acids. We produce ketones because fatty acids can’t cross a blood-brain barrier, and they can’t be used by our brain as energy. When people talk about nutritional ketosis they associate it with the presence of ketones in your bo Continue reading >>

The Easiest Way To Get Into Ketosis

The Easiest Way To Get Into Ketosis

What is the fastest way to get into ketosis? How long does it take to start busting out those ketones and become a fat burning machine? Let’s find out. For those of you unaware, ketosis is a metabolic state, wherein your body’s default fuel source – glucose – has been replaced by the alternative of fat molecules. This happens when several conditions are met: Liver glycogen stores (100-150 grams of glucose) have been depleted and the liver starts converting fatty acids into ketone bodies. This takes approximately 16 hours or so. The concentration of serum blood ketone levels is above 0.5 mMols, optimally not higher than 3.0 mMols. Blood sugar and circulating insulin have dropped significantly, while not causing a hypoglycemic response. There are several ways to cover these conditions and get into ketosis: Fast for an extended period of time Restrict your carbohydrate intake to close to zero for a few weeks Both of them are viable options but what we’re after is the fastest way to get into ketosis. But first, what’s the easiest way to get into ketosis? Don’t think that I’m getting sidetracked because it’s relevant and an essential component to increasing your speed of adaptation. It’s FASTING. When liver glycogen gets depleted, the liver will then start producing ketones that begin to provide energy to the body. However, during that initial phase, the brain and muscles aren’t able to utilize them successfully, yet. The reason why it takes time to get into ketosis is that the body is trying to preserve as much back-up supply as possible – to have those slabs and slabs of belly fat. Yea! If it were to start burning its own adipose tissue after just a day of no glucose, it would perish in a real survival scenario. 24 hours is not even a blink of an ey Continue reading >>

Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, Stay Focused & Feel Great

Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, Stay Focused & Feel Great

If you want to lose fat and improve your health as fast as possible, without feeling mentally slow, it’s hard to beat Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. Here’s an overview of the protocol, which I lay out in more detail in my new NYT bestseller The Bulletproof Diet. Plain intermittent fasting has become popular in biohacker circles because it shows tremendous promise for fat loss, preventing cancer, building muscle, and increasing resilience. The most popular site that covers plain intermittent fasting is Leangains.com. It’s totally worth a visit. The basic idea behind plain intermittent fasting is to eat all of your daily food in a shortened period (8 hours in the case of Lean Gains) and fast the rest of the time. For reasons we will get into below, this tells your body to simultaneously build muscle and burn fat. It really works. The problem is not everyone does well with fasting. If you’re a busy entrepreneur or even a student who needs to be in a high performance state all day, dealing with hunger can be a distraction. It’s much worse for those with an impaired metabolism (i.e. the people who need to lose weight). If you have more than 30 pounds of extra fat or if you’re facing diabetes, it can be hard to skip meals and still get things done. As explained in The Bulletproof Diet book, Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting is an easy biohack that changes that and makes it possible to lose fat and build muscle faster than plain intermittent fasting… without feeling hungry or tired. Introducing Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting Bulletproof Fasting is the same as intermittent fasting, except you consume a cup of Bulletproof Coffee in the morning. The healthy fats from grass-fed butter and Brain Octane Oil give you a stable current of energy that sustains you thro Continue reading >>

How To Get Into Ketosis – 5 Ketogenic Diet Success Tips. It took me a little over one day or 24 hours to get into Ketosis. So, it was quick for me! I’ll share 5 tips that helped me get into Ketosis FAST! After 6 months on strict Keto, I took 6 weeks off in the lead up to a trip around Japan, during the trip and then for a little longer than I should have on my return. I made the decision to work to get back into Ketosis and measure just how long the process took. Well, I started first thing on a Monday morning and by around lunch time on Tuesday I had a positive reading on a Ketone Strip. So, following the tips I’ll share in this post, my body moved into Ketosis in around a day or 24 hours. It kind of feels a bit strange to put a picture of a stick I peed on online. But for your reference, here’s a picture of my first positive Ketone Strip reading. You’re aiming for the shade I got below or darker. Keep in mind that I had been in Ketosis for a while before, so my body was used to being in a Ketogenic state and slipped back into it easily. If you haven’t been in Ketosis before, then it is likely to take you longer. Everyone is different! Also – I can’t stress enough the importance of chatting with your Doctor before starting a strict diet like the Keto Diet. A diet like this should really be followed under medical supervision to prevent any potential health risks. Right, so lets get into my tips for how to get into ketosis. 1. Lower Your Carbs Ketosis happens when your carb intake is as low as possible, ideally between 20 and 25g net carbs. You may find it helpful to track your carb intake using an app. I prefer going old school and I use a notebook and pen to track my carbs. I looked up the carb content of the foods I eat on a daily basis and calculate t Continue reading >>

Four New, Cutting-edge Ways To Easily Shift Your Body Into Fat-burning Mode & Ketosis.

Four New, Cutting-edge Ways To Easily Shift Your Body Into Fat-burning Mode & Ketosis.

Great article. You actually answered my question as to the ratio of the 3 BHB salts which is quite helpful for me. For me, I had Keto O/S and found it quite good – my favorite was the chocolate swirl. But it was and is very expensive. Only 15-20 servings and would break the bank. So I turned to KetoCaNa and I’ve tried two flavours. Both of them were so salty that I almost threw up every time. Like flavoured sea water. Also only 15 serving per bottle. Then I turned to Ketond which is okay – Tigers Blood and Caramel Macchiato. What I like about Ketond is that it has a full 30 servings and is very transparent with it’s ingredients. It’s also the same price as Keto OS but you get 30 servings. But still, not the best taste. So in the end, I ordered 1kg of pure BHB Magnesium from a supplier in China and I will be developing my own Ketone product with 30 servings as a lower price than all the competitors, and with more Magnesium, and Calcium in it than Sodium so that it tastes the best and actually helps with weight loss (which Magnesium is proven to do at the right amount). What the companies don’t tell you is that actually Sodium BHB is the cheapest, then Calcium BHB and then Magnesium BHB to source so I would be interested in knowing if what you wrote is actually true or just an excuse to make the product cheaper. Probably a mix of both. So I have 2 questions Ben: 1. If you had to split the 11.7g of BHB into Sodium, Ca, and Mg, what ratio would you do for the best health results and potential weight loss? The current products on the market are about an 80/12/8 split. I would think it should be the other way around. 2. When I develop my own product and sell it, would you be up for sampling it and reviewing it on your website here? What flavours do you like/would Continue reading >>
