How Much Weight Can You Expect To Lose In 5 Weeks Eating A Low-carb Diet?

That big event you want to look your best for is coming up in just over a month, and you want to calculate how many pounds you can drop before then if you commit to eating low-carb. The answer really depends on the strictness of your low-carb regimen, your age and how much weight you have to lose -- younger men and people with more weight to lose tend to drop pounds most rapidly. An extremely low-carb diet is likely to yield faster immediate weight loss, but a less restricted level of carbs may be easier to follow for five weeks. Video of the Day Why Low-Carb Works for Weight Loss Before figuring out how much weight you can lose, understand why low-carb will help you lose it. First, when you reduce carbs, you cut off a major source of calories -- so you're eating less. On a low-carb diet, you'll probably find yourself eating more protein, which increases satisfaction and takes slightly more calories to digest than carbs and fats. Your appetite will most likely decrease on the diet, too, so you may feel less hungry and have fewer cravings for sweets and other foods with "empty" calories. Eating low-carb also reduces insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that your body releases in reaction to eating sugars -- whether they come from a can of soda or a bowl of pasta. Too much insulin drives your body to store fat. You also drop a fair amount of water weight when you eat low-carb. One reason is that your kidneys release sodium -- and water -- in response to the lower levels of insulin in your blood. You also lose fluid because the stored carbohydrates in your muscles, also called glycogen, are bound to water, and as you use them for energy, the water is released. An "extremely low-carb" diet contains 50 grams or fewer of carbs per day. This plan leads to the most rapid weight Continue reading >>

I feel like it has a bad reputation but it doesn’t need to be super greasy and fat laden for most who are trying to lose weight. “Once my body switched to using fat as fuel I had TON of excess fat already attached to my body to fuel it. “I eat protein of all kinds (fish, meat, eggs) fat (avocados and cheese mainly) and low-carb veggies (broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, lettuce, spinach and zucchini) but my portion sizes are significantly smaller since being in ketosis- because my appetite is suppressed and my thinking of what “normal” is has been completely rewired. “I’m starting to plan on how to transition successfully out of a strict ketogenic diet to a more balanced low-carb diet as I start introducing running and weight training.” On hearing she followed a keto diet, some commenters asked her how she found it, and she replied: “Keto can seem really intense and gross and greasy depending on who you’re following. People with a lot of body fat to lose do not need to eat a ton of fat to be in ketosis. I didn’t. Is The Ketogenic Diet Right For You? Nutritionists Weigh In

You may be hearing a lot about the ketogenic diet as a way to slim down while noshing on butter and heavy cream. This way of eating is suddenly hot among venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, who believe it will help them live longer and healthier, CNBC reports. Some praise the high-fat/ultra low-carb plan for helping them to lose weight and have energy all day long. Other advocates say it finally helped them to get control of their body. How does it work and could it help you? We asked Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian nutritionist and author of “Read It Before You Eat It”; and Keri Glassman, nutritionist, registered dietitian and TODAY Tastemaker. To start with, both said they would never advise the ketogenic diet for weight loss. “Cutting out carbs is usually an invitation to overeat them at another point,” Taub-Dix said. “For a diet where you’re looking to lose weight, look good and feel good… I would not recommend a diet like this.” “For safe and effective weight loss, the carb reduction is too extreme,” Glassman added. RELATED: Read inspiring stories of ordinary people slimming down in TODAY's My Weight-Loss Journey Here’s what you need to know: What is the ketogenic diet? It’s a diet fine-tuned in the 1920s to help treat epilepsy. It does help to control seizures in some children, but it’s not recommended for adults “mostly because the restricted food choices make it hard to follow,” the Epilepsy Foundation says. The diet has just recently begun to be touted as a weight loss plan, Glassman noted. She described it as eating “mostly fat with a teeny bit of protein and carbs.” How does it work? Your body normally relies on carbohydrates for energy. It breaks them down into glucose, which is your main source of fuel. If that Continue reading >>

How Long Can You Stay In Ketosis Safely?

How Long Can You Stay In Ketosis Safely?

Are you looking for a diet for weight-loss or fat-loss? If so then you might be interested in ketosis. The question is whether you can stay on it permanently. That’s because it’s critical for any ‘diet” to become part of your everyday life and eating habits. It’s important to first understand what it is all about. It’s a natural state of the human body when it’s fueled almost 100% by body fat. This state takes place during a low-carb or “keto” diet as well as during fasting. It’s important to understand how this process is related to fat loss. The term originates from the fact that the human produce produces tin fuel molecules known as “ketones.” When the body doesn’t have enough blood sugar/glucose it gets energy from this source. The body produces chemicals when it gets a very low supply of carbs and a moderate amount of protein. The liver’s fat produces ketones then the body and brain use it for fuel. The process is especially important for the brain since the organ can only run from glucose/ketones. Medical research shows that early humans probably experienced the state very often. The reason is that hunter-gatherer societies ate a high-meat diet and had less access to carbohydrates than modern humans. As a result human bodies evolved so they could get energy from fat even though it mimicked starvation mode. Today there are various reasons why people use the ketogenic meal plan. Some of the most common ones are to lose weight or control epilepsy. The firm supporters point out the health benefits of the diet but others note that it’s a dangerous “hack” of the body’s regular metabolic system. These are the benefits to this process: Less eating due to no appetite More fat loss from abdominal cavity Lower blood sugar/insulin levels Lo Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet Weight Loss Results | I Lost 30lbs In 6 Weeks

My Ketogenic Diet Weight Loss Results Before I talk about the ketogenic diet, I would like to give you a little background about myself. A few years ago I had manage to eat and drink my way up to 280lbs. Even though I have a goofy smile in the picture below, it was a very depressing time in my life. The only thing I was worried about when I got off work was beer and unhealthy foods. I could go to Long John Silver’s and eat eight pieces of fish, eight shrimp, a large box of fries and still look for more food to eat. The last thing on my mind was any type of diet or exercise. I was about 265lbs in the photo below… Uhggg!! Fast forward a few years, I went through a separation and ended up homeless. I decided to quit drinking, start working out and of course, find a job… At the time of this next photo I was about 250lbs and had been sober for two months. I had been working out for about a month, doing a total body workout three days a week. When I would workout, I would do three sets of ten reps per body part. That’s all I remembered from high school when I played football…lol About 250lbs As far as my diet goes, I just did what I was taught in the past about eating healthy. It was basically high carbs, low fats, fruits and veggies. I remembered the old food pyramids back when I was a kid and all I could think of was… “Fat is Bad”… It made sense… Why would I eat fat if I was trying to lose fat? As you notice at the top of the pyramid, Fats and Oils are to be used sparingly. And from looking at the bottom of the pyramid, I can eat all of the bread, rice, cereal and pasta I wanted. So that’s exactly what I did. I was eating tons of bread from sandwiches because most of the deli slices were low fat. I’m talking loads of spaghetti, lasagna, mac and chees Continue reading >>

The Definitive Guide To The Ketogenic Diet

The Definitive Guide To The Ketogenic Diet

If you want to lose weight or build muscle faster and think the ketogenic diet might help, you want to read this article. How did a diet meant for treating epileptic seizures turn into a popular weight loss fad? That’s the story of the ketogenic diet, which was introduced in 1921 by an endocrinologist named Dr. Henry Geyelin. Geyelin, presenting at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association, explained that the ancient Greeks had discovered that fasting was an effective method of managing epileptic seizures. Hippocrates wrote about it and, like Geyelin, found that the seizures would return once eating resumed. Why? What was it about fasting that suppressed the seizures? Well, epileptic seizures are triggered by electrical abnormalities in the brain. The causes can vary, from genetics to brain injury, but more common is chronic inflammation throughout the body. Geyelin found that when people fast, two major changes occur in the blood: glucose levels fall and ketone levels rise. You’ve probably heard of glucose, also known as blood sugar, but not ketones, which are carbon-oxygen molecules produced by the liver that cells can use for energy instead of glucose. This finding fascinated Geyelin and he set out to determine if similar effects could be achieved without starvation. A decade of work proved they could, and the “ketogenic diet,” as it would be later called, was born. The purpose of the ketogenic diet is to maintain a state of ketosis, wherein the body’s primary energy source is ketones, not glucose. Early studies showed it was an extremely effective treatment for seizures, but in 1938, it was eclipsed by the anticonvulsant drug phenytoin. This medication became the standard treatment for epilepsy, effectively retiring the ketogenic diet from cli Continue reading >>

Keto and Intermittent Fasting You know that the keto diet will help you to lose weight fast. You’ve also heard that intermittent fasting is also a fat shredder. So, what would happen if you combined the two methods? let’s dig deeper and find out what that combination can do for weight loss. What is Intermittent Fasting? Intermittent fasting (IF) is essentially water fasting [as a break between eating. But, it’s not your typical water fast, where you deprive yourselves of calories for days or weeks on end. With intermittent fasting, you break up periods of water fasting with feeding windows. To get the most out of this process you need to fast for a minimum of 16 hours. Intermittent fasting is also referred to as the Warrior Diet and the Hunter / Gatherer Diet. Intermittent fasting is not a calorie reducing diet. To receive the fat burning benefits of IF, you do not have to eat less food. The only restriction is that you have to consume those calories within your feeding window. These range from the standard 16 hour fast with an 8-hour eating window, to a straight 24 hour fast one or two times a week. An example of a 24 hour-fast could be from 6 pm one day until 6 pm the next day. That means that you’d still be eating on both days – prior to 6 pm before you start on the first day, and after 6 pm the next day. During the period of fasting, it is really important that you stay hydrated. That doesn’t mean you drink gallons of water. Just don’t forget to drink, it’s important to have the correct viscosity in your cardiovascular system to keep things flowing as they should. Lose 10 Pounds A Week With Ketogenic Diet

Lose 10 Pounds A Week With Ketogenic Diet

Losing 10 pounds in a week on a diet might seem improbable to you or maybe even impossible. However, with a diet such as the ketogenic plan, you can quickly lose 10 pounds in a week by providing a different type of fuel for your body to burn instead of sugar – fats. Why a Ketogenic Diet will bring Weight Loss Although a ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet prescribed medically for epileptic children, it can work in people of all ages to force the body to use fats as fuels instead of sugar, thus literally melting away body fat. . How does that work? With the limited carbohydrate intake, your body is not receiving carbs to be stored and burned for energy. Instead, your body starts to convert fat to energy. Once this process is initiated, actually adding more fat to your diet will keep these fires burning stronger and longer. The first few days on this type of diet, eating foods higher in fats and proteins and all but eliminating carbohydrates, will start to reverse your body’s chemistry. After that, your body will start burning fat 24 hours a day. For most other diets, strong emphasis would be placed on exercise. And not that you wouldn’t want to implement an exercise routine with a ketogenic diet, especially with the high amount of fat you’ll be ingesting, but your body will be in a weaker state than normal for the first few weeks. So give your body time to balance out before starting an exercise regimen. Even without the regular exercise, the ketogenic diet, when followed properly, will help you drop 10 pounds in a week. The Food Ketogenic diets are preferred by many people because the menu options are vast and incredibly tasty. Because you want to eat foods higher in fat content, you will get to enjoy rich, full flavors and barely have Continue reading >>

How I Have Lost 80 Pounds In 11 Months Using A Ketogenic Diet

How I Have Lost 80 Pounds In 11 Months Using A Ketogenic Diet

I have lost 40 80 pounds in 4 11 months using a Ketogenic Diet and I am not done yet. Weight loss and fat loss have always been elusive to me. Not this time. The Weight Loss Struggle I have struggled with my weight and with trying to lose weight my whole life it seems. I was always a bit of a bigger kid growing up. Nothing too crazy. Just a few extra pounds. During my teen years I did grow quite a bit taller so I wasn’t quite as pudgy but I was never happy with the way I looked. Even at a young age I was conscious of my size. A Sugar Addiction I loved food. Especially the sugary stuff. I always had to have two helpings of a meal followed by dessert. Luckily for me we did at least have home cooked meals and we always ate as a family at the dinner table. The other thing I had going for me is that I was active. My friends and I were always outside playing. Hell our parents had to fight with us to come inside after dark. But I was a “sneak-eater”. I would sneak food into my room and eat it. I am not exactly sure why this became a habit. I “Tried” A Lot of Different Weight Loss Approaches Over the years I kept trying to lose the pounds. I was very much into sports so to be honest I wasn’t hugely overweight but I wasn’t happy either. This pattern continued for decades. I was always trying to lose 10 pounds, or 20 pounds. I would have some success but it didn’t last and I would fall right back to my poor eating habits and the weight would come back. I tried a lot of different weight loss approaches. I joined gyms and I spent thousands of dollars on supplements. None of it made me any lighter. Except in the wallet. Being Overweight Affects Your Self Esteem This comes as no surprise I hope. When you are carrying extra pounds it is always on your mind. You never f Continue reading >>

How Much Weight Can I Lose In 14 Days Following A Ketogenic Diet And Using Intermittent Fasting?

How Much Weight Can I Lose In 14 Days Following A Ketogenic Diet And Using Intermittent Fasting?

AH! Great question and this answer is going to provide you with immense conceptual information about weight loss and general health. If you’re referring to the IR14 Plan by Epibolics (14 day plan that using keto + IF) then you are now talking to the author. If not, this plan is available at Epibolics.com, for free. Hopefully this gives me credibility to answer this question. Now, this is not an ad and I’m not going to try to sell you anything. In fact, I’m going to tell you that in 14 days, you’re going to lose little to no weight, even with the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. If by WEIGHT you are referring to FAT and you are wondering how much FAT LOSS you can achieve in 14 days, it depends on how much you eat (positive calories) and how much you exercise/move (negative calories). Put simply, how large of a caloric deficit have you created in those 14 days? Regardless, the answer is not much weight (fat) loss will occur in 14 days, even in extreme conditions. Let’s say you went to the extreme and you ate nothing but 200 grams of proteins (to prevent muscle wasting), 0 fats, and 0 carbs for 14 days. That’s 400 calories per day. And then let’s say that somehow - despite the extreme fatigue and irritability of a true starvation diet - you manage to exercise vigorously each day and burn another 1000 extra calories from exercise each day (this is virtually impossible). You’re still only going to lose a then number of pounds (of fat) that you can count on your fingers, maybe a few more. Sure you’ll lose more “weight” than this but most of it will be water and some will be muscle. So what gives? Why did I author and create a business around a plan that doesn’t provide impressive weight loss in 14 days? The answer: Metabolic health comes first, Continue reading >>
