Getting knocked out of Ketosis! This video is about being kicked out of ketosis because I ate too many carbs in one day. While there are people who can be in ketosis and they can eat a few more carbs in a day than the normal amount, I personally was too early into the diet. Be careful not to knock yourself out of ketosis or you'll have to start it up again and wait for the results. How do you know when you're knocked out of Keto? How do you know when you're knocked out of Keto? So i'm entering my 3rd week of Keto and i'm going cold turkey on carbs. (no tdk/cdk) I've been using ketostix and it'll vary from pink-light purple'ish color. Just trying to cut down 6-8% more bodyfat before i try to maintain. 1. alcohol: Halloween is coming up, and i have a bunch of events to go to after Halloween that involves alcohol. I realize that my blood sugar will be low, so my tolerance will probably be less than usual. So how much alcohol will it take to knock someone out of Keto and how can you tell without ketostix? 2. Nuts/snacking: I have a bad tendency to over snack on mixed nuts. Can they knock you out of keto? (5g carbs per serving, 2g dietary fiber) 1. Pick one night to drink and skip the rest of them or just attend them sober So i'm entering my 3rd week of Keto and i'm going cold turkey on carbs.     So I was listening to the 2 Keto Dudes episode on sweeteners and they were talking about how one sweetener or the other would “knock them out of ketosis.” How do you know when you’ve been knocked out of ketosis? Is it a blood sugar thing? Or are you using a ketone tester (blood/breath/urine strip) to verify?
    (Note: I’m T1D, 25 years now, diagnosed as a kid. I just started wearing my CGM again today to try to level off the blood sugars and adjust my basal rate in my insulin pump as needed. If I can tell by blood sugar if I’m knocked out of ketosis that would perfect and so easy for me!)

    Most likely from experimentation to test tolerance.
    I did a protein tolerance experiment and I’d test my ketone readings, using the Precision Xtra, a few times after eating a large amount of protein .
    I bet one could do the same experiment with sweeteners.

    There are a few sure ways to know if you are in ketosis. In my opinion the most reliable and easiest way is to acquire a blood ketone test meter. Many people here like the Abbott Precision Xtra. The strips to test ketones are a few bucks each but if you try eBay you can usually get them a little cheaper. You will have to do a fair amount of testing in the beginning to see what foods do what to your ketone levels but after awhile you’ll become familiar with the do’s and don’t and will only need to test or occasion.

    Testing for ketones isn’t a requirement but it is nice to know what’s going on without resorting to guessing.

I stopped using the strips because I drink alot of water and find the strips were getting really light. Many people say "ketosis is ketosis" and it doesn't matter whether the strips are light pink or dark purple. However, I know seeing that light pink can be discouraging even if you know it's because you of the water you're drinking. Personally, I find that in ketosis my urine has a rather strong smell to it :blush: and if it's there, I know I'm in ketosis. It doesn't matter how much water I drink, it's still there. It might not be scientific, but it works for me!In fact, I suppose I could change my name from Pugzilla to Queen Stinkypee, but it just doesn't have the same ring to it, you know? :daze: :D Also, I get a certain taste in my mouth, and if you've been in ketosis, you know what that is. Some people really rely on the strips, others don't even worry about ketosis, as long as they are following the plan exactly, no cheating, and seeing lbs and/or inches coming off, then they know the plan is working.     I am just starting week 3 . I have been OP totally. One thing that keeps me from cheating is the fear that I will kick myself out of ketosis. What amount of non program food would it take to throw you out of ketosis? And does a person start all over and have to go thru the headaches and trauma that happen that first week? I have heard several people go off program while on vacation and start back up again later. Is it like having to start all over again???

    It would take prob more than 40-50 carbs to kick you out of ketosis. Some can handle more carbs. But it's a slippery slope. Yes, you have to go through all the symptoms to get back in. And 3-5 days worth of food and time and money. It's like a weeks worth of money and time gone. Not worth it.

I know a few times that I've had things I shouldn't, the next day or two I was starving, had cravings etc. so I think I kicked myself out of ketosis. They weren't big cheats but I think we're so close to the limit if you have a restricted item a day. I was "perusing" the Atkins site for some of their carb counts etc. and they start with 12-15g net carbs (carb-fibre) on their phase one and then add 5g netcarbs per week or something.

In a fairly short amount of time (a couple of months usually), your kidneys stop excreting the acetoacetate that the strips measure. Betahydroxybutyrate is the main ketone body thats used for fuel, and you will get better at making and consuming that. So using the urine strips is akin to looking for apple cores in someones garbage to determine how many oranges theyre eating. Blood tests are too expensive. Im surprised they remain so expensive. I can usually tell a pretty big difference between Flying on ketosis (when Ive been eating super well - or eating well and supplementing with a lot of ketone supplements ) and being borderline/off. Its pretty hard for me to tell a difference between borderline and off. That to me is one of the biggest benefits of the exogenous ketone supplements - it just makes it easier for me to be in a state of high ketosis.
