Exogenous ketone supplements have gotten extremely popular lately with high performers like Tim Ferriss posting non-stop about all the benefits they offer, so I decided to give it a try as a self-experiment. Man I am glad I did. I was a bit skeptical at first because of all the hype, but I really felt the difference it made for me. As with most guys in my generation, I’ve take tons of different supplements trying to find the perfect shortcut, putting all kinds of weird stuff into my body. Then I realized how ridiculous that was and stopped taking most supplements. Needless to say I was a little hesitant to try this stuff because I have pretty much only been taking protein, greens, and pre-workout sometimes (pretty basic and well-established supplements). But with a bunch of my friends and people I follow talking about the benefits of a ketogenic diet (or ketosis) I thought it would be worth giving it a shot. The reason I wasn’t turned off by exogenous ketones (and the reason for taking it actually makes sense to me) is that ketosis is a completely natural metabolic state your body goes into in the absence of carbohydrates. So to dot the I’s and cross the T’s, I recommend getting the below blood test and baseline measures. Often finding a Doctor who is progressive and going to agree to do this tests can be a challenge. If your doctor is old school and thinks fat makes you fat, then I suggest finding a second opinion, rather than try to teach them otherwise. Depending what country you’re in, you can elect to pay for the tests if you doctor or health insurance won’t cover it. Step 2: Supplement yourself into ketosis Rather than waiting for things to happened, giving yourself a mental nudge with supplements will negate some of the negative side effect when first going into ketosis. Would you like to lose some fat? A ketogenic diet is a pretty good tool to help you reach your goal. You can use exogenous ketones which have been a popular way to help get people into ketosis and comply with the transition from eating carbs to eating fats. Once in ketosis, use real food to stay there. Sounds easy, right? Unfortunately, some bro science complicating this topic has been surfacing which must be quashed. People are claiming that exogenous ketones are stopping the fat burning that people are seeking. The same exogenous ketones that help a lot of people experience ketosis and make getting into and staying in ketosis much easier, which makes the fat loss so much easier. SAD! This is how the logic follows from people who don’t really understand physics but like to quote laws of physics to sound fancy like they know how the human body works: Exogenous ketones contain energy. Body fat is stored energy. Therefore, if you consume any energy, you can’t use any stored energy. That’s not really how the body works. At all. By that same rationale, if you were to eat any dietary fat (or any food), then you wouldn’t be able to burn any fat. Unless every single person who has ever lost fat has only done so by doing a water fast, I think this argument and concern is pretty invalid. So before we get further: NO, exogenous ketones do not stop fat burning. Fat loss and fat gain are a little more complicated than people think. What is ketosis? Ketosis is the physiological state where the concentration of ketone bodies in the blood is higher than normal. This is generally agreed to be at beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations greater than 0.5 mM. How to achieve ketosis? Ketosis occurs either as a result of increased fat oxidation, whilst fasting or following a strict ketosis diet plan (ENDOGENOUS ketosis), or after consuming a ketone supplement (EXOGENOUS ketosis). When in a state of ketosis the body can use ketones to provide a fuel for cellular respiration instead of its usual substrates: carbohydrate, fat or protein. Why does ketosis exist? Normally, the body breaks down carbohydrates, fat, and (sometimes) proteins to provide energy. When carbohydrate is consumed in the diet, some is used immediately to maintain blood glucose levels, and the rest is stored. The hormone that signals to cells to store carbohydrate is insulin. The liver stores carbohydrate as glycogen, this is broken down and released between meals to keep blood glucose levels constant. Muscles also store glycogen, when broken down this provides fuel for exercise. Most cells in the body can switch readily between using carbohydrates and fat as fuel. Fuel used depends on substrate availability, on the energy demands of the cell and other neural and hormonal signals. The brain is different as it is dependent on carbohydrates as a fuel source.
