Keto Supplements You Do (and Don’t) Need

Keto Supplements You Do (and Don’t) Need

There are a lot of supplements on the market, targeted at those of us on a ketogenic diet. Are they necessary? No, most of them really aren’t. However, there are a few supplements I definitely recommend taking, especially on a lower carbohydrate or ketogenic diet. Vitamin D Do you get at least 30 minutes of sunlight every day? If not, or if it’s winter where you are (basically, between October and March), you definitely aren’t getting enough vitamin D. This keto supplement is actually all purpose – vitamin D is incredibly important in regulating mood, metabolism and in the production of hormones. It’s pretty much impossible to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D from food sources, so if you aren’t being pelted by the sun’s rays…it’s time to supplement. I love these liquid drops because they’re a good deal (it’s over a year’s supply), and are super easy to take. I also love these gummies because I am a child. Probiotics Probiotics are the good bacteria that populate your stomach. They’re important for weight control, autoimmunity, blood sugar control and a whole host of functions. We don’t really even understand yet how important probiotics are, but there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that these little guys are crucial to pretty much every system of our bodies. Eating fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, kefir and yogurt can certainly help to boost levels. As can taking a probiotic supplement. Look for one with not only a high count of organisms, but with as many strains as possible! Diversity! I like these packets because you don’t have to take them daily, they don’t need to be refrigerated, and they dissolve in water. Fish Oil Unless you’re eating at least 2 Alaskan salmon fillets, or several tins of sardines a Continue reading >>

Best Exogenous Ketone Supplements

Best Exogenous Ketone Supplements

Exogenous ketones are a very new and exciting health food supplement that offers numerous health benefits to those who use them regularly. They’ve only been on the market since 2014, but ketones themselves have been studied extensively throughout the last several decades. Ketones are made in the liver from stored fat cells, providing us with energy in times when the body doesn’t have available glucose or “glycogen” to burn. Examples include when you’re pushing the body hard physically and burn off all your stored sugar energy (glycogen/blood glucose), or during times of famine when food is scarce. Exogenous ketones are exactly the same as ketones as far as the body is concerned. “Exogenous” simply means that the ketones are derived from sources outside the body, whereas ketones manufactured by the liver from fat stores are referred to as “endogenous” ketones. The Human Body Isn’t Meant to Run on Sugar All the Time Ketones are now recognized by science as the preferred energy source for both the brain and heart, while our biological power-source inside the body, the mitochondria, also thrive when fueled by ketone bodies instead of glucose. Mitochondria are the sole driving force behind aging in the body, as they help kill aged and/or malformed cells (eg., cancer), form new healthy cells, and in general help keep the body vital and full of energy. Several studies where exogenous ketones have been administered show boundless improvements in athletic performance, cancer treatment, Alzheimer’s, dementia, inflammatory diseases, and genetic disorders of all kinds. Exogenous ketones aren’t to be compared with the hyped-up raspberry ketones that are so popular for weight loss these days. Raspberry ketones are somewhat similar on a molecular level, but are Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Supplements Reviews – Which Is The Best?

Ketogenic diets have been around for a while and are here to stay. But more and more people are getting aware of the fact that adding Ketogenic supplements can be of tremendous help for their overall well-being. Using the right kinds of keto supplements can be beneficial as it can help to balance the fats that your body needs to get into the state of ketosis. Starting a diet like can be quite a shock for your body. It has to adapt to the change of intake of food. Exogenous Ketone supplements can soften that shock and make it easier and faster to adapt. With the rise of popularity of keto diets, more and more products have been introduced that are supposedly the best ones. However, many of these products actually do not provide the essential supplements you need when switching or living on a keto diet. Some of these supposedly great products can actually undo a lot of the good you get from being on a keto diet. Keto supplements, as most other supplements available online or in drug stores, are not governed by the FDA. As such, there’s a lot of room for shady marketing and for products that don’t help or even have side effects that are negative. You can find keto supplements that miss ingredients or add harmful components that can have side effects ranging from constipation to more severe medical issues like higher levels of cholesterol and/or triglycerides. Sometimes these side effects can even disrupt the menstrual cycle for women (amenorrhea). You certainly shouldn’t have to become an expert in figuring out and understanding what compounds you should have to take. Being able to pick the best keto supplement while you are on the diet is important to ensure that your body gets all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to function perfectly. The keto diet is very stri Continue reading >>

The Top 5 Best Exogenous Ketone Supplements

The Top 5 Best Exogenous Ketone Supplements

Ketogenic diets have been around for at least a century in one form or another, but they have really grown in popularity over the last few years. The idea is that you follow a diet with virtually no carbohydrates in it whatsoever. This is not a low carb diet, this is a very low carb diet (less than 20g per day). After following this for 24 hours your body should be almost completely void of glycogen, the main fuel source (that comes from carbohydrates). When this happens the body goes into a process known as ketosis – where it uses stored body fat to convert to ketones, which can be used for energy as a replacement for glycogen. Exogenous ketones are ones that are not produced in the body. They are taken as nutritional supplements, to 1) help a person enter ketosis faster, and 2) to increase the benefits of doing so. Supplementing with ketones can have physical and mental benefits – improving endurance, reducing appetite (great for people on diets), and increasing cognitive performance (short term memory, decision making, focus). In this article we are going to take a brief look at five of the best exogenous ketone supplements that are currently available to buy. Starting with the best first. 1. Perfect Keto Perfect Keto are a supplement company dedicated to selling exogenous ketones, they have two base products: Chocolate Sea Salt flavour and Peaches & Cream flavour. They use stevia leaf as a sweetener which helps keep calories (and carbs) down to an absolute minimum and each serving contains 11.38g of Beta Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) – which is the main form of exogenous ketone. They have spent a lot of time ensuring that their product tastes delicious which sets them apart from most companies (exogenous ketones have a reputation for tasting disgusting). Ketone Ester Review: What Are They, And Do They Work?

Ketone Ester Review: What Are They, And Do They Work?

It's an exciting day at the KetoConnect household! We finally got our hands on the first commercially available ketone ester! The only company currently making this stuff is KetoneAid and they were nice enough to send us a sample to try for ourselves. We have tried most of the exogenous ketone supplements on the market and have not been impressed, but this is something completely different. Exogenous Ketones - Salts VS Esters The difference is night and day. When supplementing with the current BHB Salts on the market the impact is negligible. Often I will feel absolutely nothing, where other times I will notice a small benefit in energy and focus. It turns out this is due to the small dose that all BHB Salts deliver. There is an upper limit to how much you can consume at a given time because the ketones are binded to a salt such as sodium, potassium or magnesium. Ketone Esters on the other hand have no limit. You can consume exponentially more at a given time, which leads to a dramatic increase in benefits. The difference is rather astonishing and has completely reversed my thoughts on supplementing ketones and the future of the ketone supplement market. The Taste - Yes...It's That Bad! While the taste is much improved from the original iteration of these ketone esters, it's still pretty terrible. I'd describe it as a mix between rubbing alcohol and what I imagine toilet cleaner would taste like, with a squeeze of lemon. I'm sure this will continue to improve over time, and while it is terrible I don't feel it makes the supplement too prohibitive. It's easy to justify a few minutes of discomfort for hours of increased productivity. We Monitored Our Ketone and Glucose Levels After choking down our respective drinks, we started monitoring our blood ketone and glucose leve Continue reading >>

To Ketone Or Not To Ketone: Mineral Salts

To Ketone Or Not To Ketone: Mineral Salts

Let me preface this article by stating that I am not affiliated, do not know any of these companies directly, and haven’t tested them in any way. Rather, due to the recent explosion of ketone supplements on the market, I wanted to cover the importance of considering mineral salt content of these supplements. Exogenous ketones are becoming more popular than ever as advancements in scientific research continue to show how they work to improve both health and performance. At first, the only options for delivering exogenous ketones were unpalatable ketone esters; however, now exogenous ketones can be taken in the form of ketone mineral salts that are easily blended and palatable in water. Making ketone mineral salts involves combining beta hydroxybutyrate (BHB) with mineral salts such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium. Before considering whether ketone supplements are a good option, most people immediately look at the salt load, and rightfully so. It is important to take into account the nutritional and health impact of not only the BHB, but to consider the minerals that are used to make the product. Although there is more current evidence on the effectiveness of ketone esters , ketone salt supplementation has the potential to provide additional benefits through the extra electrolytes/nutrients that are required to make the ketones. While ketone esters are expensive due to the manufacturing process involved in making them, ketone salts might be a more convenient option for both inducing a state of ketosis and elevating blood ketone levels for various reasons we will discuss separately. Let’s take a look at some of the facts and misconceptions about three of the minerals used to make ketone mineral salts: sodium, calcium, and magnesium. (Potassium is very hygro Continue reading >>

Can Ketone Supplementation Mitigate Migraine Attacks?

Can Ketone Supplementation Mitigate Migraine Attacks?

A new study, not yet published, suggests that taking ketone supplementation might help reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. An improvement of migraine problems is a common experience on a keto diet. Preliminary evidence indicates that a daily dietary supplement providing ketones can reduce the frequency of migraine headaches with no adverse effects. Increasing evidence suggests an energy deficit disorder exists in migraine, the researchers note. By supplying ketones as an alternative fuel to glucose, several deleterious components of the deficit may be avoided. 12 Great Herbs And Supplements To Improve Ketosis

A ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate, moderate protein and high fat based nutrition plan. A ketogenic diet trains the individual’s metabolism to run off of fatty acids or ketone bodies. This is called fat adapted, when the body has adapted to run off of fatty acids/ketones at rest. This article will cover how best to improve ketosis and supplement a healthy lifestyle. This nutrition plan has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. This leads to reduced risk of chronic disease as well as improved muscle development and fat metabolism (1, 2). Ketogenic diets have been quite popular over the last 10 years due to the beneficial effects being in stable ketosis has on brain function, aging and chronic disease development. Why I’m Using Exogenous Ketone Supplements

Why I’m Using Exogenous Ketone Supplements

Exogenous ketone supplements have gotten extremely popular lately with high performers like Tim Ferriss posting non-stop about all the benefits they offer, so I decided to give it a try as a self-experiment. Man I am glad I did. I was a bit skeptical at first because of all the hype, but I really felt the difference it made for me. As with most guys in my generation, I’ve take tons of different supplements trying to find the perfect shortcut, putting all kinds of weird stuff into my body. Then I realized how ridiculous that was and stopped taking most supplements. Needless to say I was a little hesitant to try this stuff because I have pretty much only been taking protein, greens, and pre-workout sometimes (pretty basic and well-established supplements). But with a bunch of my friends and people I follow talking about the benefits of a ketogenic diet (or ketosis) I thought it would be worth giving it a shot. The reason I wasn’t turned off by exogenous ketones (and the reason for taking it actually makes sense to me) is that ketosis is a completely natural metabolic state your body goes into in the absence of carbohydrates. Instead of burning sugar for primary energy, your body starts burning the breakdown of fat (or ketones) as your primary energy source. The reason I really wanted to try them is that ketones are a far preferred energy source to your brain than glucose or carbs, but getting into ketosis can be miserable and I want to continue to eat carbs for the working out I do. Exogenous ketones are basically supplemental ketones. When you take them, your body immediately starts using ketones for energy just like you would if you were in a deep state of ketosis. This means no crash diets, no low carb craziness; I can just have the benefits of ketosis whenever I w Continue reading >>

Raspberry Ketone

Raspberry Ketone

Summary All Essential Benefits/Effects/Facts & Information Raspberry ketone is the compound responsible for many flavoring and aromatic qualities of cosmetics and processed foods. When present in high doses, raspberry ketone can exert fat burning effects on various areas of the fat cell. These effects may be similar to those of ephedrine and synephrine. It should be noted that all evidence for the effects of raspberry ketone has only been observed in vitro (in a test tube). Though researchers are able to raise the concentrations of ketones in a single cell during studies, these same concentrations cannot be replicated in the human body, particularly through oral supplementation. Things to Know 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one, p-hydroxybenzyl acetone Raspberry ketone is said to be non-stimulatory, but this has not been properly addressed by research Raspberry ketone has a slightly artificial raspberry aroma and taste How to Take Recommended dosage, active amounts, other details There is no human evidence for the effects of raspberry ketones. Studies on rats have used a dosage range of .545-2.18g/kg, which correlates to a human estimated dose of 80-340mg/kg for humans. This dose is very high compared to other fat burning compounds, so for that reason the standard supplemental dose of raspberry ketones for humans is in the 100-200mg range. There is no solid evidence for the effectiveness of the doses listed below. Rat dosages correlate to the following human doses: 870-3,700mg for a 150lb person 1,100-5,000mg for a 200lb person 1,500-6,200mg for a 250lb person There is no human evidence for the effectiveness of raspberry ketones. Raspberry ketones cannot be concentrated in the human body the same way they are concentrated during studies done outside the body, on single cel Continue reading >>

Exogenous Ketones: To Ketone Or Not To Ketone

Exogenous Ketones: To Ketone Or Not To Ketone

My thoughts on Exogenous Ketones After being contacted (following the Youtube Q&A) by several folks – both members of Ketogains and Internet strangers, I felt compelled to write as fair and even-handed a write-up on exogenous ketone supplementation as I feel can be mustered. I condition my response by saying this – I want to deal only in evidence and hypotheses grounded in biochemistry. I admit up front that this will probably become something of a treatise on what constitutes a well-formulated ketogenic diet. I don’t have the time (or the energy) to put together a document that covers all facets of the use of exogenous ketones in sufficient depth, so what I want to do is to address the folks that I see asking me about them most often – those who have excess body fat, and are looking to lose weight. They have been told about the potential benefits to fat loss via exogenous ketones, and they want to know if the hype is real. Those of you who know me (or read my previous post here) know that I like to respond with “it depends.” So…when the question is raised, “Should I supplement with exogenous ketones?” what do you think my answer will be? Probably not! (HA, I tricked you!)…but let’s explore why. As I’m sure this is going to be hotly debated enough (as the topic is raging in numerous ketogenic groups) there isn’t any value in dealing with speculation that doesn’t have a basis in science, nor in anecdotes. The challenge in dealing with exogenous ketone supplementation is two-fold: One side of the debate has a product to sell. Anytime someone’s livelihood is tied to your purchase of their product, bias and subjective interpretation of the evidence should be considered. The evidence (either for or against) their supplemental use by average schl Continue reading >>
