Is The Ketogenic Diet Right For You? Nutritionists Weigh In
You may be hearing a lot about the ketogenic diet as a way to slim down while noshing on butter and heavy cream. This way of eating is suddenly hot among venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, who believe it will help them live longer and healthier, CNBC reports. Some praise the high-fat/ultra low-carb plan for helping them to lose weight and have energy all day long. Other advocates say it finally helped them to get control of their body. How does it work and could it help you? We asked Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian nutritionist and author of “Read It Before You Eat It”; and Keri Glassman, nutritionist, registered dietitian and TODAY Tastemaker. To start with, both said they would never advise the ketogenic diet for weight loss. “Cutting out carbs is usually an invitation to overeat them at another point,” Taub-Dix said. “For a diet where you’re looking to lose weight, look good and feel good… I would not recommend a diet like this.” “For safe and effective weight loss, the carb reduction is too extreme,” Glassman added. RELATED: Read inspiring stories of ordinary people slimming down in TODAY's My Weight-Loss Journey Here’s what you need to know: What is the ketogenic diet? It’s a diet fine-tuned in the 1920s to help treat epilepsy. It does help to control seizures in some children, but it’s not recommended for adults “mostly because the restricted food choices make it hard to follow,” the Epilepsy Foundation says. The diet has just recently begun to be touted as a weight loss plan, Glassman noted. She described it as eating “mostly fat with a teeny bit of protein and carbs.” How does it work? Your body normally relies on carbohydrates for energy. It breaks them down into glucose, which is your main source of fuel. If that Continue reading >>

Keto & Weight Loss
One of the most common reasons people start a ketogenic diet or simply cut carbohydrates is to lose weight. But does the hard, scientific evidence say? Additionally, does a low-carb diet just get rid of the water weight- or does it shed body fat and maintain lean mass? In this piece we analyze if eating more fat really makes you less fat. The Key Figures in Body Weight Everyone is always talking about “losing weight”- but what are the exactly referring to? Human body weight refers to the amount of mass on your body. The bulk of this mass is from body fat, water, muscle, and bone. Being overweight means that you have extra body weight from fat, water, muscle, or bone. Obesity means that someone has an excess amount of fat to the extent that it harms your health. Oftentimes, doctors, nurses, and other professionals will put your weight in terms of your height and gender in a figure called body mass index (BMI). According to the World Health Organization, a BMI from 25-30 usually indicates someone is overweight, BMI in the 30-35 range puts someone in the range of being obese and 35 and over morbidly obese. [1] Medical and public health research suggests that body weight and BMI are useful indicators of health. According to the National Institutes of Health, being obese and morbidly obese is significantly associated with an increased risk of developing serious health issues such as certain cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney damage. [2, 3, 4] Maintaining a healthy weight is a critical way to prevent the onset of many of these health problems. Recently, many people have begun to question the usefulness of BMI as a general indicator. A sizable amount of people who may be overweight or even obese may be classified as such even though th Continue reading >>

How To Lose 75 Pounds In 75 Days With Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting
“Really, it’s that easy?”- That’s what Zach said when he heard about the Rapid Fat Loss version of Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting. You may have already read about the basic protocol for Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting, and the Rapid Fat Loss Protocol. The Rapid Fat Loss Protocol is a cyclical ketogenic diet with Bulletproof Coffee. To avoid the negative effects of calorie cutting, we use appropriate supplements. This protocol was created for clients who want to lose the maximum amount of fat possible in the shortest time span – without feeling like a zombie. Besides the fact that I enjoy helping people and sharing my secrets (as evidenced by my blog), I like to create programs that achieve results my clients demand. Before I share something, I test if it works for me. Good science is repeatable, which is why I like it when other people are able to lose fat and feel awesome – like me. Zach provided the perfect opportunity to test one of these techniques. As with everything good in life, it started with Bulletproof Coffee. Bulletproof Coffee improves brain function, increases fat loss, and keeps you full. You never feel hungry, get low energy, and as evidenced by our conversation with Chris Masterjohn, the saturated fat is good for you. Many executives (or anyone for that matter) would kill to have sustained energy while never feeling hungry. One such person is my Bulletproof financial trader friend from Las Vegas named Zach. Zach has struggled with his weight for years, but I convinced him to give the Bulletproof Fasting Fat Loss Protocol a chance. Zach’s job requires great mental capacity and doesn’t allow for much movement during the day. As many business men do, he depended on sugar for energy – and got fat. In order to provide a simple, effective Continue reading >>

How Quickly Can You Lose Weight?
Take your average guy or gal that decides they’re committed to finally losing that extra weight that’s crept on over the years. They’re going to eat healthy (primally, of course), start working out, and stop all the nonsense they know to be unhealthy. This might be you. A few days go by, then a week. The scale is budging, but barely. “This is going to take forever! How long is this going to take?” We all want instant results, right? Well, what is realistic? What is safe? What is effective? And what can you expect when you attempt to lose excess body fat and reach your ideal body composition? Everyone knows that slow, gradual weight loss produces the best long-term results and fast weight loss is unsafe and unhealthy. People you know have probably clucked “Oh, you’re losing weight fast now with that low-carb fad diet, but just wait a few weeks and it’ll all come rushing back!” And when you go somewhere like the CDC’s weight loss page, they pat your head for “want[ing] to lose it very quickly” and reassure you that “people who lose weight gradually and steadily are more successful at keeping it off.” It’s become an article of faith that slow and steady weight loss wins the race. But is it actually true? I searched the literature for support of this widely-accepted weight loss truth. If folks like the Center for Disease Control were saying it, there had to be some evidence for it. Right? I came up empty. What little evidence I could find seemed to support the opposite contention: that rapid initial weight loss is associated with better long term weight maintenance than slower weight loss. Just look: A 2000 review concluded that “greater initial weight loss” improves long term weight loss maintenance, even when that weight is lost using ext Continue reading >>

How Much Weight Can You Expect To Lose In 5 Weeks Eating A Low-carb Diet?
That big event you want to look your best for is coming up in just over a month, and you want to calculate how many pounds you can drop before then if you commit to eating low-carb. The answer really depends on the strictness of your low-carb regimen, your age and how much weight you have to lose -- younger men and people with more weight to lose tend to drop pounds most rapidly. An extremely low-carb diet is likely to yield faster immediate weight loss, but a less restricted level of carbs may be easier to follow for five weeks. Video of the Day Why Low-Carb Works for Weight Loss Before figuring out how much weight you can lose, understand why low-carb will help you lose it. First, when you reduce carbs, you cut off a major source of calories -- so you're eating less. On a low-carb diet, you'll probably find yourself eating more protein, which increases satisfaction and takes slightly more calories to digest than carbs and fats. Your appetite will most likely decrease on the diet, too, so you may feel less hungry and have fewer cravings for sweets and other foods with "empty" calories. Eating low-carb also reduces insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that your body releases in reaction to eating sugars -- whether they come from a can of soda or a bowl of pasta. Too much insulin drives your body to store fat. You also drop a fair amount of water weight when you eat low-carb. One reason is that your kidneys release sodium -- and water -- in response to the lower levels of insulin in your blood. You also lose fluid because the stored carbohydrates in your muscles, also called glycogen, are bound to water, and as you use them for energy, the water is released. An "extremely low-carb" diet contains 50 grams or fewer of carbs per day. This plan leads to the most rapid weight Continue reading >>

Expected Rate Of Weight Loss
Medically supervised weight management with the Optifast® VLCD™ Program has been shown to produce rapid weight loss. Research has shown that on average, weight losses of 1.0-2.5kg per week have been achieved while on the Intensive Level1,2. It is common to see a larger amount of weight loss in the first week of the program. The weight loss in the second week will give you and your client an idea of what to expect ongoing. Weight loss will vary between individuals and will also depend on physical activity levels. For example both men and individuals with a higher BMI will have a greater reduction in weight because they have higher energy expenditures due to their bigger stature and relatively more lean body mass. 1. My Story: How I Lost 77 Pounds
My story begins many years ago. I started my health improvement and weight loss journey in 2008 after a series of health scares forced me to look at my bad diet and non-existent exercise habits. My blood pressure and fasting blood sugar were both elevated, and I started having issues with blurred vision and pain in my feet. That really scared me, as my mother had been diabetic before she died at the age of 63, and I did not want to end up dying young and in pain as she had. So I started paying attention to how I felt after I ate. Armed with my observations, I began to change my diet. At first, I cut out the obvious processed junk foods, and started choosing real foods instead. Out went the boxed and canned stuff, and I started eating fresh meats and vegetables instead. Although my diet was much lower in carbs at this point, and I had removed many of the problematic foods, I still got my chocolate fix in every week, and I was eating bread or corn chips occasionally. Legionella Testing Lab - High Quality Lab Results CDC ELITE & NYSDOH ELAP Certified - Fast Results North America Lab Locations legionellatesting.com Six months into these changes, I felt so much better, I decided to write a website and share the information I had learned about what constituted real food and the difference it can make in your health. I called the website Healthy Eating Politics, since what I had learned about “healthy eating” was the direct opposite of what the federal government and mainstream medicine was saying. I discovered that the low fat, whole grain, high carb diet being pushed by the USDA was making people sick, and that cholesterol and saturated fat were NOT evil foods. The lie that cholesterol and saturated fat cause heart disease was doing a lot of damage to the average America Continue reading >>

The Weight Loss Waiting Game
The stop-start waiting game of weight loss is a very popular topic, because, honestly, if you haven’t experienced a delay or detour at some point in your journey, it’s only a matter of time before you do. Which is why rather than using it as an excuse to give up, you should just view it as a normal part of that weight loss waiting game. Once you understand what’s reasonable as well as that your body doesn’t work like clockwork (meaning one week may differ from the next), you can stop beating yourself up for not losing the 2.5 pounds (or whatever) that you think you should be losing each week. How one person’s body reacts to Atkins is entirely different than how someone else’s will, and there are a variety of factors that can be attributed to this. The number of pounds you lose during the first 14 days of Induction will help give you a general understanding of your personal degree of what doctors call metabolic resistance. I prefer to refer to it simply as your ease or difficulty in losing weight. Let’s look at some hypothetical men and women to help you get an idea of where you might fall in this range. We’ll take into consideration their starting weight and the weight lost in the first two weeks on Induction. Not surprisingly, the more weight you have to lose, the faster you’ll lose, at least initially. Are You an Easy Loser? If you’re a woman with 50 or more pounds to lose and your 14-day weight loss tallied 12 pounds, you fall into this category. An easy-loser guy with a similar weight goal would likely lose at least 16 pounds. A woman with 20 to 50 pounds to shed who pares off 9 pounds would also be considered an easy loser, as does an equally overweight man who sheds 12 pounds. So would a woman with less to 20 pounds to banish who dispatches 6 p Continue reading >>

Here's Exactly How I Lost 50 Pounds Doing The Keto Diet
Of all the places to seek life-changing nutrition advice, I never thought the barber shop would be where I found it. But one day last January, after a couple years of saying to myself, "today's the day I make a change," my barber schooled me on something called keto. Normally, I take things he says with a grain of salt unless they're about hair or owning a business, but this guy could literally be on the cover of Men's Health. He's 6 feet tall, conventionally attractive, and his arms are about five pull-ups away from tearing through his t-shirt. If anyone else had implied that I was looking rough, I would've walked out in a fit of rage, but I decided to hear him out. I should clarify that I was out of shape, but my case wasn't that severe. I hadn't exercised in a few years and basically ate whatever I wanted and however much of it, but I was only about 30 to 40 pounds overweight. My barber went on to explain that this diet, paired with an appropriate exercise routine, allowed him to completely transform his body in less than a year, and all he ate was fatty foods. Once he showed me his "before" picture, I was sold. It was time to actually make a change. Short for ketogenic, keto is a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb diet that forces your metabolism into what's called a state of ketosis. There's a much more scientific explanation to that, but it basically means that instead of burning carbohydrates (mainly glucose, or sugars), your body switches to burning fat as a primary source for energy. Keto isn't necessarily about counting calories, though the basic idea of eating less in order to lose weight still applies. This is more of a calculated way to rewire your metabolism so that it burns fat more efficiently over time, using very specific levels of each macronutrient Continue reading >>

‘i Did A Low-carb Diet For 2 Weeks—here’s How Much Weight I Lost’
I've tried my fair share of weird weight-loss strategies, none of which I wind up maintaining long-term because of the crazy restrictions. But in the summer of 2015, my parents started their own journey on the low-carb diet, and after seeing each of them successfully shed some pounds, I decided to give the diet a try for myself and see what kind of low-carb diet results I'd get. Diets that minimize carbs go by many names. Chances are you've heard people refer to the Atkins, South Beach, or Keto (short for "ketogenic") diets. For the purposes of this experiment, I followed the rules laid out by Susan Kleiner, Ph.D, R.D, author of Power Eating, in this article. Since I work out moderately at least three times a week, I planned to consume 100 grams of carbohydrates per day on the plan—and that was the only rule. Considering cheese is naturally low in carbs (and was the hardest thing to give up during my bouts of Paleo and Whole30), I figured I'd finally met my perfect weight-loss match. So, armed with no further restrictions than capping my carb count, I kicked off two full weeks on the diet. Here's what I learned and what my low-carb diet results looked like. I've heard people preach about the wonders of food journals and how helpful they can be, but I always found the idea of writing down every last bite of food I consumed to be overkill. After all, I'm pretty aware of what I'm putting in my body, thankyouverymuch. But during my first day of counting carbs, I realized how helpful it really was to keep track of what I was eating. I kept my daily journal on a Google doc and updated it throughout my day. Not only did it help me keep a daily tally of how many carbs I'd eaten, but it was also a great reference for looking up the number of carbs in foods I eat regularly. Any Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet Plan – Weight Loss Results Before And After Reviews
You may have heard of the ketogenic diet plan, but have no idea what it means. Or you’re looking for a new diet low in carbs that will actually give you results. Here’s our all-inclusive guide to this low-carb dietary lifestyle which includes ketogenic diet reviews from REAL people at the end. The ketogenic diet plan is a low-carb, high-fat diet that aims to alter your metabolism so that your body relies primarily on fat for an energy source instead of quick-burning carbs. Whenever you eat something high in carbs (a doughnut), your body will produce glucose and insulin. Glucose – Almost everything we eat can be converted into glucose. Carbs are sugars, and all sugars are easily converted to glucose. Since glucose is the easiest source for your body to convert to energy, it will be chosen over any other energy source to fuel the body. If you consume more sugar than your body needs to function, the excess glucose your body generates then gets stored as fat. Insulin – Insulin is released while eating. It notifies your body to start taking glucose out of its bloodstream, which then lowers blood glucose levels. If not for insulin, you would go into hyperglycemic shock from something as simple as eating a few slices of pizza. Since glucose is used as the primary energy source, fats aren’t needed, and instead they’re stored. Hence, people become overweight and increase their chances of health issues. The idea behind the ketogenic diet is to change your body’s main fuel source from carbohydrates to ketones, which are the products of fat metabolism. What are Ketones? When you deprive yourself of glucose, the liver will begin to break down fat into glycerol and other fatty acid molecules. The fatty acid is then broken down even further into what’s called ketogenes Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet Weight Loss Results | I Lost 30lbs In 6 Weeks
My Ketogenic Diet Weight Loss Results Before I talk about the ketogenic diet, I would like to give you a little background about myself. A few years ago I had manage to eat and drink my way up to 280lbs. Even though I have a goofy smile in the picture below, it was a very depressing time in my life. The only thing I was worried about when I got off work was beer and unhealthy foods. I could go to Long John Silver’s and eat eight pieces of fish, eight shrimp, a large box of fries and still look for more food to eat. The last thing on my mind was any type of diet or exercise. I was about 265lbs in the photo below… Uhggg!! Fast forward a few years, I went through a separation and ended up homeless. I decided to quit drinking, start working out and of course, find a job… At the time of this next photo I was about 250lbs and had been sober for two months. I had been working out for about a month, doing a total body workout three days a week. When I would workout, I would do three sets of ten reps per body part. That’s all I remembered from high school when I played football…lol About 250lbs As far as my diet goes, I just did what I was taught in the past about eating healthy. It was basically high carbs, low fats, fruits and veggies. I remembered the old food pyramids back when I was a kid and all I could think of was… “Fat is Bad”… It made sense… Why would I eat fat if I was trying to lose fat? As you notice at the top of the pyramid, Fats and Oils are to be used sparingly. And from looking at the bottom of the pyramid, I can eat all of the bread, rice, cereal and pasta I wanted. So that’s exactly what I did. I was eating tons of bread from sandwiches because most of the deli slices were low fat. I’m talking loads of spaghetti, lasagna, mac and chees Continue reading >>
