Diabetes Canada

Diabetes Canada

Diabetes Canada (known from 1953 to 2017 as the Canadian Diabetes Association or CDA) is a registered national charity whose mission includes serving the 11 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.[1] Diabetes Canada programs include: Its programs, education and services support people living with diabetes in their daily fight to live as well as possible with diabetes; Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada represent the best evidence-based direction for health-care professionals; investments of more than $125 million in diabetes research since 1975; and Advocacy efforts have led governments to develop policies that respect the rights of people living with diabetes and access treatments they need to live healthy lives. History[edit] Dr.Charles Best, a co-inventor of medical insulin founded the Diabetic Association of Ontario in the late 1940s.[2] As other provinces and territories started to form their own associations, it became clear that if the provincial branches combined their resources they could more effectively serve their membership.[3] This culminated in the formation of the Canadian Diabetes Association in 1953.[4] On February 13, 2017, the Canadian Diabetes Association became Diabetes Canada. Today, Diabetes Canada is active in more than 150 Canadian communities and supports people living with diabetes through research, advocacy, education and services.[5] They are supported in their efforts by a community-based network of volunteers, employees, health-care professionals, researchers and partners. Known as “The Birthplace of Insulin,” Banting House, is where Sir Frederick Banting woke up at 2 a.m. on the morning of October 31, 1920 with the idea that led to the discovery of insulin. Team Diabetes On Mission To Prevent Disease Spreading On The Homefront

Team Diabetes on mission to prevent disease spreading on the homefront "Every three minutes in Canada now someone is diagnosed with diabetes. And in B.C., with 1.5 million living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, its costing our government $418 million in 2017 to deal with complications from the disease." Published on: November 29, 2017 | Last Updated: November 29, 2017 10:18 AM PST Kirstie McRae, left, and Carling Watson, community partnerships coordinators with Diabetes Canada, share a few lighter moments in their busy Vancouver office on Tuesday. Gord Kurenoff / Postmedia News Kirstie McRae laughs out loud when asked Tuesday morning to honestly describe her enthusiastic colleague at the Diabetes Canada office on West 8th Avenue. Shes definitely the crazier one, McRae declares, pointing at a grinning Carling Watson, who declines to protest. I mean, she just signed up to a do a 50K in Squamish (next August). Who does that on a whim? Watson, looking around the third-floor Vancouver office thats being renovated as you read this, pretends she doesnt hear McRaes fun jabs, then fires back: Shes a serious yogi, part-time runner, which may be easier than training for a 50K, so Ill hold my wise comments for later! The other thing thats crazy, and which brought these strangers together six months ago, is the diabetes epidemic in Canada, and the threat of the disease skyrocketing in B.C. Emily and Jessica, with Team Diabetes, share a few laughs before running in the 8K event at Mays BMO Vancouver Marathon. (Gord Kurenoff photo) Allow me to take you back to the Canada-Russia Summit Series in 1972 when Bobby Clarke broke rivals ankles, arms and hearts with his win-at-all-costs drive. Kyle Guembel is participating in Team Diabetes Canada in an Ironman competition. However, they pale in comparison, he says, to the battle his teenaged brother, Korey, wages against diabetes everyday. ?It?s such a huge struggle for him just to be OK and alive as a teenager,? Guembel says. ?None of my struggles have anything to do with living or dying.? Korey has to wear a pump that regulates his body?s insulin levels at all times. Guembel is one of four Team Diabetes Canada (TDC) participants. TDC is a fundraising campaign for the Canadian Diabetes Association. It offers training support and a trip to an international athletic event in exchange for a specific amount of donations. This is the first year Sudbury has taken part in Team Diabetes. Nationwide, the program has operated since 2000, and raised $3.7 million in three years. Nation-wide, team members logged over 200,000 kilometres in training sessions, losing over a ton of weight in the process. Diabetes costs our health care system $13.2 billion each year, according to the CDA. In Ontario, diabetes accounts for 32 per cent of heart attacks, 43 per cent of heart failure cases, 30 per cent of strokes, 51 per cent of new dialysis patients and 70 per cent of amputations. Sign up today and run for one of 15 charities including Team Diabetes! Did you know that there are currently over 10 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes? If you were to walk into a hospital today, among the people being treated for a stroke, 30 percent have diabetes. Of those being treated for a heart attack, 40 percent have diabetes. Of the people experiencing kidney failure requiring dialysis, 50 percent have diabetes. Of those who need non-traumatic limb amputation, 70 percent have diabetes. Diabetes is also a leading cause of vision loss and blindness. This is the health impact of diabetes in terms of some of the most significant health problems experienced by those living with this disease. Not many people realize the true impact of diabetes in our communities even though most of us know a friend or family member affected by it. Thats why Team Diabetes exists; we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of Canadians affected by diabetes. We are equally passionate about spreading awareness so that Canadians will realize the full impact of diabetes in our country. In 2016, Team Diabetes will be participating in over 25 events across Canada from 5k walks to marathons and Tough Mudders.
