Every Day Ups And Downs, A Diabetes Blog

Because no two days with type 1 diabetes are the same. Except when they are. Video: Inserting an Enlite sensor with One-press inserter for Medtronic Guardian Connect I am a couple of weeks in to my trial of the new Medtronic Guardian Connect and I'm busily making notes to bore you all senseless with my thoughts about it at some point over the next couple of weeks, but thought I could grab the moment yesterday to shoot a short video showing sensor insertion for Enlites with the new 'One-press' serter. Guardian Connect is a new 'standalone' CGM from Medtronic which is primarily intended for people on multiple daily injections, or who use other brands of insulin pump (as a standalone system it does not communicate with any of their insulin pumps or integrate with their 'low glucose suspend' Smartguard technology). I'll talk a bit more about this later when I post my review - there are other options available elsewhere in the world, but for us in Europe, the Connect system does not communicate with Medtronic insulin pumps, at least not yet. Following in the footsteps of Dexcom's G5 and Dexcom Share, one cool feature of Medtronic's Guardian Connect is that rather than using a separate handset, the CGM information is displayed on your iPhone. Guardian Connect also uploads your data automatically to the Carelink cloud in real-time, which offers the ability to share your CGM data with a partner/spouse/parent/friend/random stranger. You can also set Carelink to issue SMS text alerts to particular people if the sensor detects low glucose levels and you do not respond to the alert within a given time. This sharing of CGM data can provide a valuable safety net for people who live alone, or for parents of a child with diabetes. At the time of writing I am not aware of an Android ve Continue reading >>

Medtronic Receives Fda Approval For A Significant Milestone In Diabetes Care

The Medtronic MiniMed 670G receives FDA approval Medtronic receives FDA approval for a significant milestone in diabetes care The FDA approves worlds first hybrid closed loop system for people living with type 1 diabetes. September 29, 2016 When Tamar Sofer-Geri heard the news, the tears quickly followed. I was very excited, she said. I was surprised at how emotional I was. Tamar is not only the founder of a non-profit in California that provides awareness and support for people living with type 1 diabetes, but shes also the mother of a teenager living with the disease. The MiniMed 670G system is the companys most advanced insulin pump and sensor system to date. This is the biggest technological development since Tia was diagnosed, says Tamar. And to think that she had a part in making it happen makes me so proud. On Wednesday, Medtronic announced that it had received FDA approval for the worlds first hybrid closed loop (HCL) insulin delivery system the MiniMed 670G system. Its the companys most advanced insulin pump and sensor system to date and provides patients living with diabetes more glucose control than ever before. Tamars 16 year old daughter Tia was part of the MiniMed 670G system clinical trial. As an avid reader and soccer player, the high school junior knows that keeping her glucose numbers in range requires time and effort. With the HCL system, Im spending less time managing my disease, and getting better results, she says. It adjusts to you and theres just less you have to do. Tamar Sofer-Geri says the new system allows her daughter to spend more of her time focusing on school, sports, and family fun. The system, which automatically adjusts the delivery of basal insulin, is also customizable so patients can choose from various levels of automation that be Continue reading >>

Fda Approves Medtronic’s Minimed 630g System, Ships In September

By Brian Levine and Adam Brown Adds waterproof, color screen, and remote meter bolus. Will it speed FDA review of the 670G hybrid closed loop? Earlier this month, Medtronic unexpectedly announced FDA approval of the MiniMed 630G. This pump offers the same threshold (low glucose) suspend algorithm as the MiniMed 530G with Enlite, but on the company’s next-gen pump platform – adding a color screen, waterproofing, remote bolusing from the Contour Next Link glucose meter, more alarm customization, insulin on board displayed on the home screen, and other key improvements listed in the table below. The pump is approved for people 16 years and up and will begin shipping in September. Medtronic has more information posted on its website. There was a lot of confusion in the diabetes community about this product and why it is launching, so some common questions are answered below. Can current Medtronic pumpers upgrade to the 630G? Yes, but it is pricey and not covered by insurance if the pump being upgraded is less than four years old. The out of pocket cost to upgrade to the 630G is $599 for Medtronic pumps purchased after May 1, 2016 and $3,100 for pumps purchased before May 1, 2016 (assuming the old pump is sent in to Medtronic). Current MiniMed 530G/Enlite users who want the 630G’s Enlite CGM integration will also need to buy a new transmitter for $511. How does this compare to the 640G (predictive low glucose suspend) available in Europe and the MiniMed 670G (hybrid closed loop) under FDA review? The MiniMed 630G is the same pump platform as the 640G and 670G, meaning it has the same overall pump body design, waterproofing, screen, buttons, etc. However, the 630G has the simplest control algorithm in it: suspending basal insulin delivery when the low threshold is cross Continue reading >>

How To Build A Betterenlite

How To Build A Betterenlite

A little over a year ago, I wrote a post on How to build a better insulin pump ,based on the Medtronic Revel. Since very littlehas changed from the Revel to the 530G, those wishes/recommendations still apply. But now that Ive had some time to play around with Enlite, Ive got some wishes/recommendations on how that can be improved upon as well.My reason for posting this is simple if nobody knows, nothing will change; but if someone (or some-two, or some-many) makes noise, its more likely to be heard. With the goal of being taken seriously, Im keeping my recommendations somewhat simple and realistic. The new Enlite and Enlite Serter are a vast improvement over the predecessor. In nearly every way. That goes without saying. When I first saw the Sofsensor, I concluded that this must have been designed in-house by Medtronic, and not by Unomedical, the Masters(and manufacturer)-of-all-things Infusion Set related (and whose website appears to be out-of-commission at the moment). Medtronics first CGMlacked the characteristics of something being designed by the Masters. Enter Enlite. Its better, and it took into account all the feedback received from Sofsensor users. It, too, has been designed in-house. And sadly, it too lacks some of the characteristics of something designed by the Masters. Let me be clear: I do think the Enlite is a good product, and this in no way is meant to be criticism worthy of driving someone away from using it. My reason for writing it is so that Medtronic or perhaps another manufacturer can learn something and make improvements the next time around. My hope is that theyll take a look at some of the little things that can leave a big impression. Andmaybe, just maybe, the current product can undergo minor improvements while still being the current produc Continue reading >>

Newsflash: Medtronic Launches New Minimed 630g System

Newsflash: Medtronic Launches New Minimed 630g System

A new Medtronic insulin pump is now available in the United States, introducing a new des ign and color-screen as part of a complete makeover to these diabetes devices that have fundamentally looked the same for 30 years! Say hello to the Minimed 630G, which Medtronic announced on Thursday after receiving the FDA's Pre-Market Approval on Aug. 10. This news caught many by surprise, as the California pump-CGM company hadn't previewed this product in advance as they typically do before launches. Instead, they've focused on their forthcoming 670G hybrid closed loop system, expected to be the first-gen commercial Artficial Pancreas system to hit market in 2017. A number of users are actually upset that they weren't warned of this interim product launch, because they've recently purchased new products or upgrades. Others were holding out for the future closed loop system. So we're all wondering: Just what is this 630G that we've heard nothing about before? Remember, Medtronic got FDA approval in September 2013 for its 530G that automatically stops insulin delivery once a user crosses a certain low glucose level. That was step one in moving toward closed loop technology. Next up is their Predictive Low Glucose Suspend (PLGS) features that can anticipate oncoming hypos in advance and shut off insulin to prevent them from happening. That's built into the Minimed 640G system that hit the market outside the U.S. in early 2015. Medtronic ultimately decided it would not pursue bringing that device to the U.S., opting instead to leapfrog that model and focus on getting the first hybrid closed loop 670G to market in 2017. So now, it seems we're getting this 630G as a sort of stop-gap device in between the two D-tech generations. Here's a quick glance at the Minimed 630G: Fresh Design: Continue reading >>
