Detailed Review Of The Minimed 670g From Medtronic
The MiniMed 670G from Medtronic is an insulin pump coupled with a glucose sensor. It uses a computer program (called an “algorithm”) to automate certain aspects of insulin delivery. I decided to try the 670G partially out of professional interest (everybody and their great aunt have been asking for my opinion on the system), and partially out of personal interest, as my blood glucose control hasn’t been the greatest the past couple of years. Let me start out by saying this: Since I started using 670G, my overall blood glucose control is better. I have to keep reminding myself of this non-inconsequential fact, because every day I find things about this system that I don’t particularly like. In my opinion, the pump itself leaves a lot to be desired. There are so many features and so many menus and so many safety/confirmation steps that my button thumb is starting to form a blister. The color screen is nice, but not large enough to display everything it needs to display. And the freakin’ clip is upside down. The reservoir connector pokes me in the gut every time I bend over, and I have to unclip it to see the screen and programming menus in the proper orientation. The “hybrid closed loop” part of the system (what I prefer to call the “semi-automatic feature”) is what makes 670G special. It functions by making adjustments to the BASAL insulin based on data received from the linked glucose sensor. Since previous-generation Medtronic sensors (Sof-Sensor, Enlite) were, shall we say, less than optimal, I went into this highly skeptical. Are there any accessories anyone would recommend getting? This is the first pump I will have had so looking for some advice. I was going to see how it goes but wanted to see if there's any musts you guys recommend. Common sense and plenty of patience are the only accessories needed I bought a pimp your pump case from ebay for 15 you may also not have read the following books, Pumping Insulin and think like a pancreas. They are very helpful books and will help you alot I know everyone likes pumping insulin but to be controversial I felt it was too heavy before I started on the pump I did a little @Fayefaye1429 but once I had been on it I keep going back to it I use the 640g, the only accessories I use are a smallish make up bag to carry around my spares kit (insulin vial, resevoir, mio, syringes, battery etc), some childrens socks (3 for two pairs from a supermarket) which are heelless which I use to keep the pump in when it's in my bra (most of the time) and occasionally pants, and a waist belt (not the hid-in but similar) which I use for the gym and when playing badminton. Also have think like a pancreas and pumping insulin, I re read chapters over again when I feel thee need. I know everyone likes pumping insulin but to be controversial I felt it was too heavy I thought it was useful for understanding how to transfer basal insulin amounts into the pump basal rates, but much of what is written in Pumping Insulin is stuff that you should be doing on MDI to maintain good glucose levels. Hi everyone! I am Jessica Floeh, a Type 1 Diabetic designer working on ways to make the insulin pump into a positive conversation piece and ultimately a fashion statement. I wanted to share with my fellow Type 1's a new way to transform your pump into an accessory. This tutorial will show you how to make a simple piece inspired by my transformative fashion collection, Hanky Pancreas. The current collection is for women and represents a series of design solutions that better integrate the machine with the body and mind. By turning medical device into fashion accessory the designs intend to alleviate anxiety, create dynamic communities, and encourage new relationships with medical technology. This tutorial is meant for insulin pumps that have tubing. The design in this tutorial is based around the Medtronic Minimed Pump, however, all the steps can be readjusted according to your own device. Qs collection would grow exponentially if we had a BAB store in our town, but she only gets to shop for them in person when we travel. I was on Facebook recently and one of my friends (Hi, Stacey!) posted a picture of her newest bear. And it was wearing an insulin pump! Newsflash: Medtronic Launches New Minimed 630g System
A new Medtronic insulin pump is now available in the United States, introducing a new des ign and color-screen as part of a complete makeover to these diabetes devices that have fundamentally looked the same for 30 years! Say hello to the Minimed 630G, which Medtronic announced on Thursday after receiving the FDA's Pre-Market Approval on Aug. 10. This news caught many by surprise, as the California pump-CGM company hadn't previewed this product in advance as they typically do before launches. Instead, they've focused on their forthcoming 670G hybrid closed loop system, expected to be the first-gen commercial Artficial Pancreas system to hit market in 2017. A number of users are actually upset that they weren't warned of this interim product launch, because they've recently purchased new products or upgrades. Others were holding out for the future closed loop system. So we're all wondering: Just what is this 630G that we've heard nothing about before? Remember, Medtronic got FDA approval in September 2013 for its 530G that automatically stops insulin delivery once a user crosses a certain low glucose level. That was step one in moving toward closed loop technology. Next up is their Predictive Low Glucose Suspend (PLGS) features that can anticipate oncoming hypos in advance and shut off insulin to prevent them from happening. That's built into the Minimed 640G system that hit the market outside the U.S. in early 2015. Medtronic ultimately decided it would not pursue bringing that device to the U.S., opting instead to leapfrog that model and focus on getting the first hybrid closed loop 670G to market in 2017. We didnt really think much about insulin pump wearing before that life-altering, pump-containing box arrived on our doorstep over three years ago. After all, what really matters is program settings and infusion sets, right? There is also this not-so-small matter of where to put this medical device that a 3-year-old or 13-year-old, or 73-year-old must carry on their body 24-7. We started by simply putting the insulin pump in his pocket. Convenient, inexpensive, and no prep work required. But the pump was pretty bulky on a little body and sometimes it got in the way when he was sitting down or playing on the floor. And the tubing snaked out of his pants pocket, over his waistband and into his underwear to meet up with the infusion site on his bum, sometimes poking out enough to get snagged on a hand or object. And we wondered: What if it fell out when he was doing a somersault? And what if we wanted to use a site on his arm? Tubing snaking from his pants pocket through his shirt to his arm seemed unwieldy. We needed to look for other options. If the pocket idea fits your needs, you can manage the escaping tubing problem by cutting a small hole in the inside lining of the pocket of your childs pants, then feed the connector end of the tubing through the hole before connecting the tubing to the infusion set. When planning a place to cut, consider the shortest route from pocket to infusion site; the back of the pocket may work better than either the seam or the front side of the pocket. Please, learn from my mistake: cut the hole in the TOP of the inside pocket lining if you cut a hole in the bottom, and the stitches unravel further, you may end up with a hole big enough for a pump to fall through. This morning, the Medtronic Diabetes Group held a conference call for a small group of diabetes writers to give an update on its new MiniMed 670G system, otherwise known as the world’s first hybrid closed loop system. Louis Dias, Chief Patient Officer of Medtronic Diabetes and Mike Hill, Vice President of Marketing for Medtronic’s Intensive Insulin Management Business were both on the call, as was Karrie Hawbaker, Senior Manager of Social Media. First, a recap on what the system is and what it does: The MiniMed 670G system is a combination of an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor. What sets it apart from its predecessors—and, for that matter, every other pump on the market—is that it can actually give you insulin. This makes it a major step forward toward the goal of a truly closed loop system. How does the 670G system work? Users must program their insulin-to-carb ratios, calibrate the system twice a day with a blood glucose reading from a finger stick, and give the system a “meal announcement” when they’re about to eat by entering the number of grams of carbohydrate that they intend to consume. The system then uses the grams of carbohydrate users have entered and their insulin-to-carb ratio to estimate an initial bolus to cover the meal. In the hours that follow, the system makes tiny tweaks to basal rates in order to get blood sugar levels as close as possible to 120 mg/dL. The Next Big Thing – Medtronic Diabetes 670g Hybrid Closed-Loop System By Allen Lightcap This Halloween, I will be commemorating my 27th year since being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I am now 38 years old and until recently had never imagined what it might be like to live without diabetes, or to get some relief from this relentless disease. I have run the gamut of available therapies with mixed results – multiple daily injections of a long lasting insulin coupled with a short term insulin for meals was the only option I had heard of until I was introduced to insulin pump therapy in 1999. There was a lot of freedom gained simply moving from injections to the pump, and improved control in my A1C. From there, I continued upgrading to the latest and greatest insulin pump and then introduced a continuous glucose monitoring system 4 years ago. Being able to monitor in relatively real time what my blood sugar was, watch it trend upwards or downwards, and receive alerts in advance of these adverse trends was another step in freedom from the daily grind. But even with the best in insulin pump therapy and CGMS, I was still relegated to helplessly watching the trends after I had made a “bad” decision – either a few slices of pizza which was pushing my sugar up, or an unplanned bike ride with my kids that was now dragging my sugar down.
