TheMiniMedConnect app on Android allows patients to continuously monitor glucose in real-time on their smartphones. The app connects a patients insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring data, which gets updated every fiveminutes. The Dublin, Ireland-based company saysMiniMedConnectis the first and only product enabling people with diabetes to see their real-time glucose levels on Android mobile devices. UPDATE: Updated to include comments from Ascensia Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) and Dexcom (NSDQ:DXCM) today announced respective wins for their diabetes care tech, with Medtronic launching its hybrid closed loop MiniMed 670G in the US and Dexcom winning an FDA nod for a Google (NSDQ:GOOG) Android G5 Mobile application. Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic’s MiniMed 670G is designed to automatically track and adjust blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes, measuring blood glucose every 5 minutes and automatically administering or withholding insulin. The newly launched system includes a body-attached sensor to track glucose levels under the skin, a worn insulin pump and an infusion patch connected to the pump with a catheter to deliver insulin. The device is designed to automatically adjust insulin levels, but requires manual entry of carbohydrates consumed and approval for bolus correction recommendations. “The response from the diabetes community has been tremendously positive and we are proud to be leading this remarkable period in diabetes history in partnership with the clinical and advocacy communities. We’ve essentially designed a smarter insulin pump that alleviates some of the burden associated with diabetes management, which can be unrelenting and exhausting. Medtronic, IBM team on diabetes app using Watson technology IBMs Watson technology will be used in a new diabetes app aimed at identifying patterns in lifestyle and health that could drive better treatment and disease management. Medtronic's Sugar.IQ with Watson cognitive app, which is being piloted, provides real-time continuous glucose monitoring and insulin insight gathered from pumps and glucose sensors, it announced last week. The software tool uncovers behaviors associated with glucose patterns and provides users with real-time personalized information to spur specific actions and to boost understanding of how habits affect glucose levels. In June, IBM and the American Diabetes Association formed a partnership with a goal of developing a personalized mHealth app that gets smarter over time and works with Watson Care Manager. The entities also announcedthe launch of a diabetes-focusedapp development challengefor tools that tap the associations deep data and IBM Watsons cognitive insights. Medtronic launches connected app for pacemaker patients, but patients can't see the data Medtronic has received FDA clearance for a mobile app that allows patients to remotely forward data from their pacemakers with their physicians. The app is paired with a device, the MyCareLink Smart Monitor. The Monitor reads data from the pacemaker and transmits it via Bluetoothto the patient's personal smartphone or tablet. The data, however, remains a black box to the patient who is unable to view it via the app. "The use of smart technology continues to grow among people of all ages, and especially among people over 65 which is the age range of the majority of our pacemaker patients," Darrell Johnson, vice president and general manager of the Connected Care business in the Cardiac and Vascular Group at Medtronic, said in a statement. "As a leader in remote cardiac monitoring, Medtronic is committed to providing cardiac patients with the latest technology to improve their health and make their lives easier, while helping to reduce the costs of healthcare. The MyCareLink Smart Monitor is just the first of many innovative solutions we are developing that leverage smart technology to increase patient engagement." Initially, the MiniMed Connect paired smartphone app will only be available on Apples iOS, though Medtronic announced a separate partnership today with Samsung (see below) to build out an Android version and apps optimized for Samsung devices. MiniMed Connect allows caregivers to remotely monitor patients on any product with an internet connection via a web display (similar to the Nightscout setup). Caregivers can also receive text messages for un-cleared pump alarms or when sensor glucose levels are too high or too low this addition should be a welcome relief for parents and loved ones. I understand from Medtronic that the recent update that asks for mobile number has made it impossible to use. It sure would have been nice to hear about this from Medtronic instead of me having to send multiple emails asking about this problem. I'm know now that Medtronic is aware of the problem but it does concern me that since the broken update, I have still received a rightstart email letting me know that new info has been added to my account! I feel like I should have instead received an email that told me that app wasn't working and approximate date I could expect it to be fixed! I'm not an app expert, but can't they send out another "update" that is actually the older version of the app that works until they can fix this new one?? More than a year after Medtronic released its MiniMed Connect system, which connects an insulin pump and affiliated CGM to a smartphone app, the company has launched an Android version of the MiniMed Connect app. "For people with diabetes, constantly monitoring blood sugar levels can be cumbersome and anything but discreet," Annette Brüls, president of the diabetes service and solutions business unit at Medtronic Diabetes, wrote in a blog post. "That’s why we created the MiniMed Connect mobile application, originally available on iOS. Now we are introducing MiniMed Connect for the Android operating system –the first and only product that enables people with diabetes to discreetly see real-time glucose level on their Android smartphones." While the app works on a number of Android phones, the company worked closely with Samsung to test the experience on Galaxy phones. "What’s most exciting about our work with Medtronic and the launch of the MiniMed Connect app for Android is what it represents," Samsung Chief Medical Officer David Rhew wrote in a blog post. The app, dubbed iPro2 myLog, will allow patients to see data from their FitBit activity tracker alongside data from their Medtronic iPro2 continuous glucose monitoring system. While the app removes the hassle of manually entering physical activity data, it also streamlines the sharing of data with a patients care team. And the care link app (this) only works for the doctors ... So parents still have to navigate their outdated website and still can't properly track their kids safety with their phone! Medtronic should have fired their tech and IT directors years ago. This only confirms their lack of professional understanding of the field they serve. Makes the vast sums of money they get from pump users seem even more unjustified. Analysts tried but Apple wouldnt go into details. But I did find an interesting tidbit about 13 minutes into the call when Apple called attention to how Medtronic is using its iOS platform to develop apps for its medical device business internally 175 custom apps used across 16,500 iPhones and 13,500 iPads, to be exact. Since the launch of Medtronics AppMarket more than three years ago, the company has made mobility a big priority. The move was well ahead of rival medical device companies and it has embraced mobile solutions as a way to advance its business. The medical device maker has used apps to help sales teams access proprietary information. Using 3D images makes it easier to illustrate medical devices and how they function. Updating sales and marketing content on apps is easier, faster and more engaging. It saves loads on paper, too. Among its sales apps are mSTAR a productivity tool that reps use to order and register products, and then integrate them with the companys back-end systems. mCMS is a content management app for sales staff and managers to organize, present and distribute product information based on topics and audience.
