For each of the past several years, between its North Haven and New Haven offices, Covidien has employed more than 70 interns. The seven-fold growth happened over the same time that overall Covidien employment in the state fluctuated between 3,100 and 3,400. The company, which develops and manufacturers surgical staplers, meshes and sutures and staples in Connecticut, mostly hires early-career or fresh graduates for its engineering staff. .An extensive engineering internship program, then, is a natural move, but it took a nudge from the Connecticut Business and Industry Association to get the company on that path. Michael Hedges, Chief Information Officer Genesys Works is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that enables inner-city high school students to break through barriers and discover through meaningful work experience that they can succeed as professionals in the corporate world. Students enter the Genesys Works program during the summer prior to their senior year and, after eight intensive weeks of training, are assigned to work at one of Genesys Works' client locations, part time, during their senior year. The training is designed to arm students with the knowledge they need to provide value to corporations in specific technical fields. Ms. Swarner & Ms. Brooks had the opportunity to take 13 students to the STEM day at Medtronic in Santa Rosa on November 16th. They started off their day at Medtronic with a light breakfast as their guide Renee Lawson explained what their day would look like. Next, they had a brief presentation by an engineer about the future outlook for STEM careers, pay and types of degrees, and careers within the STEM field. Next they were split up into small groups to meet with researchers and engineers about products that they are either working on or have experience with. The students rotated through each of the following groups and participated in demonstrations, and Q&A sessions with engineers and scientists: coronary stents, aortic stents, renal denervation and heart valves. Next, they toured labs within the facility. This tour included the chemistry lab, 3D printing lab, materials lab and a room where students dissected a heart with scientists. In the chemistry lab, they had the opportunity to participate in an analysis of caffeine, and used their math and a little calculus as the samples were run through a high pressure liquid chromatography. Inthe 3D printing lab they saw large scale models of stents that were being produced and used in marketing and advertising. Their third stop was the materials lab where they learned about metallurgy and alloys and participated in a demo that showed the memory of metals used in the stents. The last lab experience was dissecting a pig heart with scientists and learning about parts, function and pathologies of the heart. Companies Nearly 60 of Minnesota's most successful companies "drafted" hundreds of high school seniors into paid internships Tuesday afternoon. Through a program organized by nonprofit Genesys Works, the nearly 280 disadvantaged students already completed eight weeks of training. All of them earned year-long internships with companies like Target, 3M and Ecolabin St. Paul Tuesday morning. The "draft day" mirrored the NFL's with music, a podium, and suspense. Meylani McCorbey, a senior at Columbia Heights high school, was thrilled to learn she was picked by Medtronic. "I really like the health field, so I'll be able to work in the IT section, which is a really important section to Medtronic," McCorbey said. Sienna Antzares also landed an internship with Medtronic. "I get to go into a company that's done a lot for people and I'm really excited because I want to go into the medical field," McCorbey said. "I'm just excited to learn about everything they have to offer." Since 2008, 1,500 students in the Twin Cities have landed an internship through Genysis Works' Program.
