And I can't even get a hold of anyone to help me because it's the *** weekend, and my company's HR is closed and I can't find the Aon Hewitt customer service phone number The Financial Institution for your account is Aon Hewitt. Stocky 401k and 403b , IRA , retirement accounts , stock market Kind of, but not really. I wanted to put a dramatic headline up to see if that would drive more traffic. However, I did lose a little bit of money by rolling over my 401k from Medtronic into my IRA with Vanguard. Heres my story: As you know, I left my job at Medtronic a while back. Whenever you leave a job, theres actually a lot of work involved with your finances. You have to move them from the accounts set up by your company, to your own individual accounts. Best case is its a pain in the butt; worst case is you can forget about some of it and lose it forever . So its an important process. So when I left Medtronic I knew I had to take my 401k account and roll it over into an IRA. But there wasnt a lot of urgency because Medtronic had their 401k at Vanguard, and all our other accounts are at Vanguard, so it seemed fine. But then the Medtronic/Covidien merger happened, and as part of that, Medtronic switched from Vanguard to Aon Hewitt. I wanted to keep all my money in one place for convenience sake, so I called Aon and initiated the rollover. For those who have never done it, its a pretty simple process. You set up an IRA account where you want the money to go (Vanguard in my case). Theyll ask you how you want to fund the IRA and you click on a choice that says something like Rollover. Then you call up the place where youre money is at (Aon in this case) and start the process. Usually theyll send you a check which YOU DO NOT CASH, but instead just send it on to Vanguard. Overall the process takes about two weeks. But that two weeks is what screwed me a little bit. During those two weeks your money is not in the market. I have been working at Medtronic full-time(More than 5 years) Great people to work with, literally the only reason I have stayed as long as I have with the company. The benefits are OK but the coworkers really make it great. Benefits, while not as good as they have been/should be, are okay, and there are some other perks including education assistance. Probably a great job for someone right out of school so they can get the experience under their belt for a year or two. ISO 1000 qualifications, and AATB certifications and classes are available as well. Good company to get used to the corporate environment Lets start from the top: Management in the last year or so has been abysmal, and needs to be remedied with new upper managers for the site. We have been through at least 7 supervisors in the 5 years I have worked here(incuding a layoff of 2 supervisors recently. Most problems go unresolved because of budget issues(probably also why we have cut back on staff). Managements solution for hiring is to take anyone off the street they can get for cheap as they hemorrhage seasoned employees. Most new temps are required to work longer hours for less money, and there is no longer a promise of full employment like their used to be(I'm assuming another cost cutting measure). Some temps were hired, used for the 1 year contract, and then let go despite being great workers. Engineering for our products/paperwork is terrible, our best engineer just left the company to find other employment, and the rest have never known how to do quality work, leaving most of it on his shoulders. Most are very stubborn to change, and not entirely knowledgeable in what they do.     Investing on Autopilot Can Crash Your Portfolio 401(k) reform may have had an unintended consequence. Millions of workers who should invest for their future don't. Five years ago, a new law sought to change that, making it easy for new employees to participate automatically in their 401(k) plans at work. But as with many things, the law has had unintended consequences that may actually prove detrimental to your retirement security. In 2006, the Pension Protection Act put in motion a sea change in the way that many workers sign up for their employer-sponsored retirement plans. Before then, many people never went to the bother of signing up for a 401(k) account in the first place, thereby leaving them out of their retirement plans entirely. The law allowed employers to set up default provisions for signing up newly hired employees for retirement plans at work. Because the law addressed potential liability issues for doing so, new "Opt-Out 401(k)" provisions became commonplace. Instead of having to sign up to participate, these Opt-Out plans required workers to affirmatively tell their HR departments if they didn't want to participate. Among large companies, 57% have automatic enrollment, up from just 24% in 2006. And participation rates are higher -- 85% for plans with auto-enrollment versus 67% for those without it. But a recent study from the Employee Benefit Research Institute found automatic enrollment often results in less retirement savings. That may seem counterintuitive, but the reason lies with the default choices that most employers make.
