Can I lower my numbers and get off insulin?

Been hearing alot about people lowering numbers and not having diabetes anymore, I'm at 7.3 A1C now…some major exercise and diet changes could maybe put me at the right number? I thought there wasn't a cure. I'm confused. They did a test when I first diagnosed and said I don't produce any insulin at all, so how would I get insulin if I don't inject it? What am I missing here?
