Price For Water Pump Replacement?

Well, we found a car for 16 year old DD. 91 Nissan Maxima, auto, 132k miles. Bought it Thursday, took it to get new tires, brakes, oil change and transmission flush. Friday we notice the smell of anti-freeze, but the radiator is not cracked and we couldn't figure out where it was leaking. Car is not running hot, and it's leaking just a bit, not a big puddle or anything. She works at a golf course close to home, and works with a lot of guys who are much more car savvy than I am, so I had her drive it to work this morning and ask one of the guys to look at it. They told her the water pump is cracked and needs to be replaced. They also told her it would cost $600 to replace. Is this about right? After spending $600 on Thursday for the ties, brakes, etc., I'm a little sick. I thought I had made a good purchase for her. This car is so quiet when it runs, and there is no play whatsoever in the stearing. It's totally clean and seemed to be in such good shape. I know these things happen, I'm just bummed for her and feeling guilty that I didn't make a good choice, and also shocked that it could be that expensive to replace. I also understand that I should probably have the timing belt changed while they're doing the water pump. Is that true? Continue reading >>

Experience: ASE CERTIFIED AND MASTER CERTIFIED THROUGH DAIMLER CHRYSLER Hello and thanks for your post. Well what type of engine exactly do you have. Dodge Mechanic: DODGEEXPERT , Dodge Technicianreplied 8 years ago Okay here are the steps for removing the pump. The water pump can be removed and installed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped). Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. WARNING: CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS ARE USED ON MOST COOLING SYSTEM HOSES. WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING, USE ONLY TOOLS DESIGNED FOR SERVICING THIS TYPE OF CLAMP, SUCH AS SPECIAL CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER 6094). SNAP-ON CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER HPC-20) MAY BE USED FOR LARGER CLAMPS. Find a high quality auto repair shop or dealer near you What are the symptoms related to a bad water pump? Water pumps require replacement if they begin to leak coolant or become noisy. Leaking water pumps can result in damage to the drive and timing belts, as well as cause the engine to overheat. A failed water pump can be caused by other problems in the cooling system, such as a failing thermostat, radiator, or head gasket. A worn water pump has far reaching effects. If the water pump is not maintaining proper coolant circulation the engine will overheat, causing leaks, possible head gasket damage, and ultimately a failed motor. Failure to shut down an engine while overheating will eventually cause stalling, necessitating a tow. How often do water pumps need to be replaced? Repair intervals vary greatly by vehicle and driving conditions. The water pump does not wear like a tire or a ball joint, but eventually the bearing or impeller can fail in the pump. When noisy, leaking, or unable to properly circulate coolant, the water pump needs to be replaced. RepairPal Recommendations for water pump issues Be sure to follow the specific procedures for your vehicle. Proper gasket handling, torque specs, and sealant usage are necessary for an effective repair. When refilling the cooling system, the manufacturer recommended coolant should be used. There are many bearing noises that could come from an engine bay. Proper care should be taken to diagnose them. The entire cooling systemincluding all of the coolant hoses and fittings, radiator, coolant fan(s), and fan clutch (if equipped)should be inspected when replacing the water pump. To help prevent future issues, we recommend replacing the thermostat when the cooling system has been opened for repairs (e.g. water pump or radiat Continue reading >>

Water Pump Replacement ????

When I had to swap out my water pump I just put the proper wrench on the nut that holds the fan on and gave it a quick jolt with a dead blow hammer. I didn't think it would work (my dad suggested it) but I figured I would give it a shot and sure enough it broke it right loose. I don't exactly remember how long it took me to replace my water pump, but I think it was only a couple hrs at best, and I try not to rush projects to make sure I do them right the first time. Thanks to the Arizona summers, I have replaced my water pump (and radiator) more times than I would like to admit. Here are two ways I was able to loosen the fan: 1: Put pressure on the serpentine belt to the right of the fan pulley and use a crescent wrench to loosen the fan. Use the grip of the belt (if it is new enough) to hold the pulley in place. 2: I bought a medium sized chain about 4 to 5 feet long, bought a bolt that would fit through two links and a hook. I attached the hook to one end of the chain and wrapped the other end around the frame under the battery and bolted the links together. Attach the hook to a hole on the fan pulley (some fan pulleys do not have holes) and take out the slack. I used a crescent wrench to loosen the fan. Continue reading >>

Dave LaPorta , I sold cars, fixed cars, restored cars.. and i have driven many types. (trucks 2 Answered Jun 9, 2015 Author has 277 answers and 422.3k answer views What year? What engine? Will you be doing it yourself, or having a mechanic do it? Unless you are doing it yourself, you will need to call around to local dealers or mechanic shops. Most of your cost will be Labor. This is the reason I learned to fix my own cars. At the time I had an 89 mustang GT.... The quote I got was like 220 bucks... The part was 30 dollars.... Well for 190 bux... I can learn. And I did. Have disassembled 3 entire cars since then, and put them back together. (Old cars) My story was in the late 90's, the water pump is in an extremely similar location on a Dodge Ram or older/any mustAng.. It's in the front of the engine and easy to get to (compared to front wheel drive). There was probably maybe ( not going to run and count), but 10 bolts or so... As well as a chiltons manual was less than 20 bux, so I had the 40 bux to do it myself. Took a few hours as I had never done it before, but now there are You Tube vids for almost anything, and you can get a general idea of what it will take. As a second thing, later on that same car developed a leak in the radiator... I think the radiator was like 125 bux, but only took an hour to fix and there I'm sure I saved another 200 bux. Basically, if you do it.... Cheap.... If someone else does .... It's not cheap. Continue reading >>

Dodge Durango Questions - The Big Nut From The Water Pump To The Fan Which Way To Remove Clock W... - Cargurus

Look downward behind the fan and you'll see a large nut (about 1 7/16") attaching the fan clutch to the water pump pulley. You have to turn this bolt counter clockwise while keeping the water pump pulley from turning. There are 3 possible ways to do this. 1) Press down hard on the serpentine belt and hope it keeps the pulley from rotating with the nut. 2) Take of the serpentine belt and use a strap wrench to hold the pulley. 3) Make your own tool taking advantage of the holes drilled in the water pump pulley to hold it in place. Once that nut is broken loose, DON'T REMOVE it yet. There are four bolts to remove on the fan shroud. Two on the top and two underneath. Take all four out, pop the shroud out from the radiator, and move it over the fan. Now take the fan clutch nut the rest of the way off and lift out the fan, clutch, and shroud together." And this " I was able to get the fan clutch off using a 6" C-clamp on the water pump pulley and a 10" pipe wrench with the help of a cheater bar (metal pipe) for leverage on the pipe wrench. Crank the C-Clamp on as tight as possible on the water pump pulley but out of the way of the nut so you can lock the pipe wrench onto the nut. Use the pipe wrench and cheater bar to loosen the large fan nut. The pully (and C-clamp) will rotate initially until the C-clamp jams up against the engine block." 1981omobeel answered 2 years ago I just replaced mine last night without removing the belt or the shroud. I was able to get a vice grip tight enough to hold the pulley, but not tight enough to deny or damage the pulley. I placed this on the right side as you look down from the front of the truck. The vice grip straddled over the belt and did not grab it. I have a large crescent wrench that fit on the nut. It moved fairly easily. I also lo Continue reading >>

This will help ensure a long life for the water pump and the entire cooling system. What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Water Pump? Coolant (green, red or yellow fluid) is leaking. Why is replacing a broken water pump important? A cars engine generates so much heat that it can damage itself if it is not cooled down.
