Friend T2 since1960,on Apidra&Levemir,Haemachromatosis I had problems and the makers of the product are aware of a design flaw. My problem arose from carrying the pens in a cool pack when I travel which is every day. The problem is due to the rubber piston and the perspex part filled with insulin are different material and therefore have a different rate of shrinkage when cooled. The rubber piston then kinks or skews causing it to stick. I've changed over to the re-useable Clickstar pen and have not had any problems. I had asked my Doctor to break up my Lantus to refill per month instead of every three, because on my budget I cannot afford to pay almost $100 So I went today to pick it up and they are still trying to make me pay for 3 month supply saying they're not going to break up the box! Is this typical or should I try finding another pharmacy??? Or should I try getting a cheaper type of insulin??? I think I still have about 2 or 3 days left on my pen... I forgot to mention that I do have health insurance from my work place I'm on Medicare and I use the Lantus Solostar pen. Medicare looks at my prescription, counts the basal usage per day, adds 2 units to purge the pen needle and converts that all to how many days between insulin orders from the pharmacy. In other words, since the pharmacy cannot break the seal on a 5-pen Solostar box, Medicare divides the 1500 units in the box by my daily usage, 27 units, and I order my insulin from my pharmacy every 55 days. As you know, the Solostar pens come in a box of 5. I've never heard of any pharmacy breaking the seal on a Solostar box and selling them individually. It doesn't really matter what your financial situation is...nor what the doctor prescribes to try and work with you, the pharmacy has the last word on who gets what and how much. There's a list of higher powers that the pharmacy has to answer to. You and your doctor...you're pretty much at the bottom of that list.
