How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant With Pcos?
1. Are you trying to get pregnant naturally? See, can you get pregnant naturally with PCOS? 2. Are you undergoing fertility treatment? Different treatments have different success rates. 3. How old are you? See, what age does fertility go down in women? The majority of healthy couples trying for a baby become pregnant within the first 3 months. If you have PCOS chances are it will take at least 6 months longer again, although you can significantly increase your chance of success by losing weight (if you are overweight) and following a healthy eating plan. If you have not conceived after one year of trying (or within 6 months if you are aged over 30), you should talk to your doctor. He can take a sample of your blood and send it to a lab for fertility testing (hormone levels will be checked); or he will refer you to a fertility clinic for more specialist care. At this point, you will probably be recommended fertility treatment. There are different levels of treatment - at entry level, fertility drugs to induce ovulation are likely to be tried first and if these don't work you can progress to more invasive (and expensive!) methods like IVF treatment. If you are older (approaching 40) and time is a factor then it may be wise to go straight to IVF because it has the highest success rate for older couples. These are the most common fertility treatments used for women with PCOS, and their pregnancy success rates: Fertility Drugs: The fertility medication clomiphene citrate (usually Clomid) returns ovulation in nearly 85 percent of women with PCOS and has a pregnancy rate of nearly 40 percent. Obese women tend to be less responsive to clomiphene, so losing weight is still an important necessity for fertility. Gonadotropin/GnRH Injections: Starting with a low daily dose of FSH Continue reading >>
Metformin And Pcos
Metformin is used to treat patients who suffer from PCOS. Find out how Metformin can aid in conception by helping to regulate your ovulation and menstrual cycles. You might already know Metformin as Glucophage, a brand name drug used to treat patients who suffer from type 2 diabetes. However, what you might not know is that Metformin is also used as one of the most effective fertility drugs for women who are suffering from PCOS conceive more easily. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here Even for women who are not diabetic, Metformin can help lower insulin levels in order to regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle. It is common knowledge that PCOS can cause an excessive amount of androgens, or male hormones, in the body. Metformin is able to help lower that level of male hormones and help resume normal ovulation cycles as well as menstrual cycles in women who have PCOS. Metformin is usually used as a second round of treatment if the first round treatment options (usually Clomid) prove to be unsuccessful in helping to resume ovulation. Metformin has been proven not only to be a very popular, safe and effective drug for treating patients with diabetes, but also for women who have a problem keeping their insulin and blood sugar levels in check due to their PCOS as well. Metformin has also been proven to help women who are overweight as well as women who have normal body mass index levels. It seems that when Metformin is used, almost everyone can benefit from it. What Metformin does is to help balance insulin levels in the body. Since women with PCOS often have elevated insulin levels, Metformin can help to bring those levels back down to a normal level. Once the insulin levels are back down to normal, the male hormones (also known as androgens) also go back down to Continue reading >>
Can Metformin Help Women With Pcos?
Home / Fertility / Boosting Fertility We asked doctors whether the drug Metformin really helps women with PCOS conceive, reduce miscarriage risk and increase milk supply. Here's what they say. If you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you're not alone. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information , this hormonal disorder affects between 5 percent and 15 percent of women of reproductive age in this country. In polycystic ovary syndrome, cysts develop on the ovaries, and the body produces excess hormones called androgens, which cause an irregular menstrual cycle. As a result, ovulation can be unpredictable, and getting pregnant can be challenging. "Since puberty, I've averaged one menstrual cycle per year," says Carrie, a mother from the Midwest who has PCOS. "I always wondered if I could have children." Carrie tried getting pregnant for several months, but wasn't able to because she wasn't ovulating. After evaluating her bloodwork, her OB/GYN suggested she go on either Clomid or Metformin to help balance her hormones to promote ovulation. "Because I had a very slight imbalance in my hormones, my doctor suggested trying Metformin before going straight to Clomid. Since I heard horror stories about Clomid causing multiples, I was happy to try Metformin first," Carrie says. Metformin is a diabetes medication that is sometimes used to regulate hormones in women with PCOS by balancing their insulin level. This effect leads to more regular menstruation and ovulation cycles , according to WebMD . Carrie got pregnant the first month she took Metformin. But not all women with polycystic ovary syndrome have such good results. In fact, experts say more evidence is needed to prove that Metformin helps conception in PCOS patients . "When putting all the data tog Continue reading >>

Metformin - Trying To Conceive - Essential Baby
I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS after TTC for 16 months. And my gyno prescribed me with Metformin, has anyone taken this or is anyone taking it at the moment id love to know side effects / success stories... Hi! I was put on metformin a few years back due to pcos - i am now off it as pregnant i had it to help with insulin and other hormonal effects but my fertility specialist also said when i was ttc it would increase chances of falling pregnant and decrease chances of loss. I always had a couple of ginger pills half an hour before taking it for the first few weeks - had the slow release and took overnight. i was fine though i discovered if i took nurofen they clashed and had me running to the toilet. Hi, I suffered from secondary infertility - turns out I too had PCOS, insulin resistance, hormones out of whack (and some other stuff) - my OB/GYN put me on metformin, I also lost a bit of weight and followed a low GI diet. Thisfixed the insulin resistance and regulated my hormones and I fell pregnant. I stayed on the metformin for my entire pregnancy. It all went well. Good luck! Hi, I have PCOS and have used Metformin including a recent baby this year.I have all the symptoms and it does take me longer to get pregnant. But I have got 5 kids! For the last two pregnancies I couldn't get pregnant without Metformin. It usually takes a couple of months to be fully effective. Also prior to this new baby I had MC as didn't bother taking the Metform. Stupidly thought I could do without it. So went back on Metformin and had my new baby this year. Thanks for your replys may I ask how long it took to fall pregnant after starting metformin? I tired for 4 years for our 3rd and in that time and the following 2 years after that (so 6 years) had 4 early losses as well. Last yea Continue reading >>

Metformin For Pcos And Getting Pregnant
Metformin and other insulin-sensitizing medications lower excess levels of insulin in the body.Besides metformin, rosiglitazone and pioglitazone are other insulin-sensitizing drugs that may be used to treat PCOS. There are several reasons why your doctor may prescribe metformin when treating your PCOS, some of them fertility related: As stated above, insulin resistance is common in women with PCOS. Metformin may be prescribed to treat insulin resistance, which may then help regulate the reproductive hormones and restart ovulation. Some research on metformin and PCOS shows that menstrual cycles become more regular and ovulation returns with the treatment of metformin. This may happen without needing fertility drugs like Clomid . However, some larger research studies did not find a benefit to taking metformin. For this reason, some doctors are recommending that metformin be used only to treat women who are insulin-resistant and not all women with PCOS regardless of whether or not they are insulin-resistant. While Clomid will help many women with PCOS ovulate, some women are Clomid-resistant . (This is a fancy way of saying that it doesn't work for them.) Some research studies have found that taking metformin for 4 to 6 months before starting Clomid treatment may improve success for women who are Clomid-resistant. Another option for women with Clomid resistance may be metformin combined with letrozole . If Clomid doesnt help you get pregnant, the next step is usually gonadotropins or injectable fertility drugs . Research has found that combination injectables with metformin may improve ongoing pregnant rates. One study found that combining metformin with injectables improved the live birth rate when compared to treatment with injectables alone. In this study, if the live Continue reading >>
Did Any Of You Get Pregnant On Metformin?
Did any of you get pregnant on Metformin? If you conceived on metformin I would love to hear. I am currently making the decision to go on this drug due to PCOS. But there is a question mark over whether to use metformin or whether to rigorously change my diet and exercise regime first. Any metformin stories I would love to hear... my gynae told me to get back on it, and to get myself to the top dose to help get pregnant. i could never last more than a few days on it though, I couldnt leave the house cause of the runs, headache and tiredness. there are arguments though for it helping to prevent miscarriage? a lot of woman dont stop taking it until they get to the 12weeks, even though medical advice is to stop taking it straight away. its worth having a look at Verity-pcos forum. The girls on there are great, and what they dont know about metformin, PCOS and getting pregnant isnt worth knowing!! Thats super helpful thank you! did you struggle to get pregnant with PCOS -what did you try in the end? x x turns out it wasnt a struggle at all! we were NTNP for about a year, but we were only having sex about 3 times a month and no idea whether it was around ovulation time. only started TTC properly in December, got my BFP in January so have been very lucky. I used EPO, pregnacare vits, charted my CM and temp, used OPKS and used softcups and preseed when we had sex. so we pretty much did everything in the one month, and it worked. My cycles had stayed at around the 31 day mark since I came off the pill a year ago which amazed me. As before i started the pill I would only get 1 period every 3 months or so, and then I would bleed very heavily for 3 weeks. I am so thankful I didnt go back to having those cycles......... x Hiya hun. For the min forget about pregnancy. If you have P Continue reading >>

Does Glucophage Work To Get Pregant
Hi, I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), my doctor suggested me to take Glucophage as part of infertility therapy. Does Glucophage work to get pregnant? PCOS is characterized by infrequent menstrual periods or no menstrual periods; infertility or inability to get pregnant because of not ovulating; increased growth of hair on the face, chest, stomach; acne, oily skin, or dandruff. Glucophage is an oral antidiabetic medication used to treat type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Generic name is metformin. In women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), glucophage can be used to regulate the way insulin decreases testosterone production. Essential cause of infertility in PCOS is lack of ovulation, due to high level of testosterone. Glucophage can be taken with fertility medications to promote ovulation. When you get pregnant, you should stop taking Glucophage. I have done some extensive research on use if glucophage and it being used for fertility medicine, pcos, type 2 diabetes, and for maintaining pregnancy. The user above me stated that if you were to get pg using glucophage that you should stop taking it. This is incorret, if you were to consut your Dr. he would tell you to continue taking until your 12th week of pregnancy to help ensure that you do not have a miscarriage. If you have pcos you are more likely to have mc and should really consult your dr about all of this when you do get pregnant I can honestly say that yes glucophage works to get pregnant. I never ever have periods even when the doctor put me on clomid I never had periods. It wasn't until she put me on glucophage and clomid that two weeks late I got pregnant. I don't know if the glucophage itself would work. It worked for me. Also, if you get pregnant while on glucophage it is recommended th Continue reading >>
I decided to make this page because I keep getting emails asking about metformin, or "met" as I call it. I don't tend to reply to them because the answers are not short and it's a lot of work to reply to each one, but also because if you search met on this site you will get all my posts and pretty much get to read all about my experiences with it. There is a lot I could say about met and because of that I will probably come back and edit this page periodically as I think of new things. The information I provide about met is based on my own experiences. I'm not qualified to give any advice to anyone about what they should put in their body, but since you want to know, here's my take on it. Also, my experiences are based on using it to treat PCOS and insulin resistance (not diabetes). Oh, and I'm totally biased because I have had a really great experience with met. I actually started feeling physically better and had more energy from the first couple of weeks that I took met. It's been one of the best discoveries in my life. It think it's a great drug when used appropriately. Ok, here are some common questions people ask me about met How do you know if you need met? I am a 'text book' case of PCOS (fat, oily, acne, no periods, etc) so when I finally got to a qualified REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST he took one look at me and pretty much knew I should give met a try, but just to be sure he made me take a 2 hour glucose tolerance test. I had taken these before but my other drs had only had my blood sugar levels measured. It is critical that your insulin levels are measured too. I passed on my sugars just fine, but I flunked my insulin levels, badly. Reproductive Endocrinologist? What about my Gynocologist or regular Endocrinologist? I'm sure that your Gyn and Endo are good pe Continue reading >>
Metformin And Pregnancy: Is This Drug Safe?
Whether you're expecting your first child or expanding your family, a safe and healthy pregnancy is crucial. This is why you take precautions before and during pregnancy to keep your unborn child healthy and reduce the risk of birth defects. In every pregnancy, there’s a 3 to 5 percent risk of having a baby with a birth defect, according to the Organization of Teratology Information Specialist (OTIS). Some birth defects can’t be prevented. But you can lower your child’s risk by taking prenatal vitamins, maintaining a healthy weight, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your doctor might recommend that you don’t take certain medications while pregnant. This is because certain medications can cause birth defects. If you're taking the prescription drug metformin, you might have concerns about how the drug will affect your pregnancy and the health of your unborn child. What Is Metformin? Metformin is an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Type 2 diabetes is a condition that increases blood sugar levels. PCOS is an endocrine disorder that occurs in women of reproductive age. It’s important to maintain a healthy blood sugar level while pregnant. This is one way to reduce the risk of birth defects and complications. Although metformin can control blood sugar, you may question whether this drug is safe to take during pregnancy. Before we get into this, let’s discuss how metformin is beneficial prior to pregnancy. Metformin Before Conception If you took metformin before getting pregnant, you might know that this drug can be a godsend — especially if you’ve had difficulty conceiving. Having PCOS makes it harder to become pregnant. This condition can cause missed or irregular periods, and small cysts can grow on your Continue reading >>
How Long Does It Take For Metformin To Work For Conception?
Metformin, also known as Glucophage, is a medication that is used to regulate the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Metformin accomplishes its task through three methods. First, it causes the liver to produce less glucose. Second, metformin helps your stomach to absorb less glucose from the food that you eat. Finally, metformin improves the efficiency of the insulin that the body produces, which reduces the amount of glucose that is in your blood. Metformin is often prescribed for people with Type II diabetes. How long it takes Metformin to work depends on the reason that a woman is taking metformin. If a woman is taking metformin to regulate her blood sugar, metformin typically will work within a few days or a few weeks at the most. For the woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) metformin can help to reduce the amount of insulin in the body. Once the insulin levels are under control, many women will then experience improved ovulation. If metformin is going to work for a woman who has experienced fertility problems because of her polycystic ovarian syndrome, it will typically help within three to six months. Unlike most fertility treatments, metformin does not cause a risk of having a multiple or twin pregnancy. If metformin alone does not help a woman with PCOS who is trying to conceive, a fertility doctor may prescribe Clomid, as well. If metformin is prescribed for a woman with PCOS to help restore a regular, normal menstrual cycle, metformin can work within 4 to 8 weeks. In addition, the stabilized levels of insulin may affect the other hormones in a woman’s body, and reduce other symptoms of PCOS. Some women, either with diabetes or PCOS, use metformin as a tool for weight loss. If this is the case, weight loss can occur somewhere between 1 and 5 wee Continue reading >>
