Alberta Kids With Type 1 Diabetes Need Better Support At School

Alberta Kids With Type 1 Diabetes Need Better Support At School

Alberta kids with type 1 diabetes need better support at school Posted on Apr 26 2017 by the Canadian Paediatric Society | Permalink By Dr. Tara McGrath,Paediatric resident, University of Alberta,CPS Residents Section Pediatric residents from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary are advocating for change when it comes to kids with type 1 diabetes and school policy. About 4,000 children in Alberta have type 1 diabetes, and kids in school (age 4+) receive varying levels of support, with some receiving none. Some parents are fully responsible for their childrens insulin administration and blood sugar monitoring at school. Children may also be denied participation in field trips without an accompanying parent, or may not be able to check blood sugar or administer insulin when and where needed. These restrictions are difficult for children and families, and may predispose students to both short- and long-term complications of type 1 diabetes. The Canadian Paediatric Societys recent status report on Canadian public policy and child and youth health rated Alberta as poor when it comes to managing type 1 diabetes at school. Albertas pediatric residents want to change that. Working with Diabetes Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society, they are advocating to the provincial Minister of Education and their local MLAs, calling for a mandatory provincial standard of care for students with type 1 by January 2018. Standards should be consistent with Diabetes Canadas Guidelines for the Care of Students Living with Diabetes at School and the Canadian Paediatric Society and Canadian Pediatric Endocrine Groups position statement on Managing type 1 diabetes in school: Recommendations for policy and practice . Provincial standards are already in place in British Colum Continue reading >>

Some of the most knowledgeable people in Canada and around the world in the field of diabetes are in Edmonton this week to share their latest research. Mccrone Healthbeat - Canada's Healthcare Career Magazine. Jobs For Nurses - Rns, Lpns, Mental Health. Education In Health Care.

Editorial: Health Professional Education: Its Relationship to Collaborative and Interdisciplinary Practice One of the major foci of the Canadian First Ministers' Health Accords (2000 and 2003) was a commitment to appropriate planning and management of health human resources. Apart from determining numbers and types of health human resource personnel the First Ministers, taking information from both the Kirby and Romanow reports (and others that went before them) focused on Primary Health Care and the need for innovative delivery strategies for patient care and collaborative, interdisciplinary practice. They saw that changing the way that health professionals are educated by promoting interprofessional education for collaborative patient centred practice is one key to primary health care renewal and to recruiting and retaining a stable and well prepared health workforce in Canada. The idea of collaborative practice is certainly not a new one. Like many good ideas in health care and elsewhere it has taken a long time (and numerous pilot projects, unreported initiatives and the like) for the focus to become a driving force in resource planning for health care delivery. Collaborative Patient Centred Practice is defined by Health Canada as being the type of practice where there is active participation by all health disciplines relevant to a patient's care. In some ways it is not unlike the team approach that most of us practiced formally and informally in years past. As a concept it has been fleshed out to include continuous communication, active participation in clinical decision making and true respect built in for the disciplinary contributions of all health professionals. Interprofessional education, the interdependent concept, is defined as occasions where two or more Continue reading >>

Diabetes: Canada At The Tipping Point

Diabetes: Canada At The Tipping Point

The complications associated with diabetes have a common origin: too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. If blood glucose (sugar) levels remain high too often over time, it has a damaging effect on many of the bodys organs, primarily: the kidneys (nephropathy) the eyes (retinopathy) the nervous system (neuropathy) the heart (heart attack) the blood Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesnt produce any or enough insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which helps the cells of the body use the glucose (sugar) in food. Cells need this energy in order to function Eating properly helps keep your bloodglucose(sugar) levels within target values. The dietary recommendations for people with diabetes are similar to those for the general public. Attended Diabetes Canada Annual... - Shaw Conference Centre

Attended Diabetes Canada Annual... - Shaw Conference Centre

Attended Diabetes Canada Annual Conference for Professionals I attended this four day conference at this massive centre on three levels, all accessible by escalator (and stairs). Diabetes Canada used all levels for this very extensive conference and educational event. The staff and volunteers from Diabetes Canada were very friendly and always seemed to have the information you were looking for. The food (sandwiches and fruit), along with coffee, tea and water was plentiful. This event was extremely well attended and as such sometimes the food ran out and took time to provide more. Multiple large halls and smaller session rooms were occupied from early in the morning to later in the evening. The Shaw Convention Centre handled this very large event with very few observable concerns. The Edmonton and District Soccer Association (EDSA) has held many banquets here. Last night's banquet food was not a delicious as past years. My friends and I look forward to the beet salad, perogies, great beef and a wonderful selection of desserts. The beets and beef were there and were delicious. Sadly, no perogies--we are an Edmonton crowd and like these--and the desserts, although plentiful and attractive, were tasteless. Service was good but not quite the standard set before--no real complaints here although we would have appreciated the offer of a second cup of coffee. The venue holds lots of people, is clean and has good sound. Parking at Canada Place has doubled since the arena opened. Ask JeanEdmontonCanada about Shaw Conference Centre I went to see Die Antwoord here last night. This is a good, well-set up public space with huge windows overlooking the river. They have a large room that can be used for concerts. They often set up bleachers for those types of events, and then have th Continue reading >>

2011- 2012 Canadian Diabetes Strategy Community-based Program Projects - Funded Projects

2011- 2012 Canadian Diabetes Strategy Community-Based Program Projects - Funded projects The Canadian Diabetes Strategy (CDS) is a national initiative that works with the provinces and territories, various national health bodies and interest groups across the country working together to prevent diabetes, particularly among vulnerable and high-risk populations, and to promote early detection and management of the disease. The purpose of the CDS is to articulate and establish effective diabetes prevention and control strategies for Canada. This work involves building on what has already been accomplished and carrying it forward creatively. With access to the collective knowledge and experience of its various partners, the CDS is well positioned to determine where the needs and gaps lie, and to ensure that resources are deployed accordingly. 2011 - 2012 Canadian Diabetes Strategy Community-Based Program projects The funding priorities of the 2011 - 2012 Canadian Diabetes Strategy Community-Based Program were to support the development of tools and approaches for the screening and early detection of gestational and type 2 diabetes and for the development of tools to help Canadians self-manage all types of diabetes. In addition, the solicitation priorities addressed the secondary complications of diabetes including: cardiovascular disease; kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic foot ulcers and wounds; and mental health/mental illness among Canadians living with diabetes. These priorities were established in consultation with stakeholders. Highlights, including objectives, results and lessons learned, are provided for 10 diabetes projects.
