New On Metformin | Polycystic Ovary Syndrome | Patient
I was prescribed a month ago some Metformin and I was advised by the doctors I would have a bleed so far this has not happened for me, can someone tell me if it induced a bleed for them? My periods are extremely irregular my last one was Decemeber and before that I dont even know! I am 21 now and i have been with my boyfriend since i was 17 so we are obviously getting to a stage in our life were we want a family of our own and with pcos it seems impossible and it certainly has me questioning that after nearly 4 years of unprotected sex am i EVER going to have a family? If someone can give me some advise I would be SO grateful. Im afraid i dont have any answers for you although i understand where you are coming from. I am in the exact same position, although i was only diagnosed last week. I have been with my hubby for 6 years and we got married two years ago, got a mortgage and now all is missing is a baby. did the doctor prescribe you the metfomin? or was you sent to a fertility clinic Don't worry about it, it's nice to just get a reply sometimes Well i was diagnosed a year ago and only recently decided that if it is going to be difficult to get pregnant then i dont wanna end up 27 wanting a family and the it takes me years! I went to the doctors because obviously decided to start now for a family and was prescribed metformin for 3 months to see how i get on with it as i need to loose a bit of weight also, if nothing progresses i then go to a fertility clinic. My sister has the same as me and she is going in for her first sot at IVF which i really don't want things to come too but on the other hand my Auntie is the same and has 2 beautiful healthy children so there is hope!! I am 25 and I was diagnosed with Pcos 3 years ago and have been on metformin. At first I was o Continue reading >>
Metformin Weight Loss Success Stories
Metformin is a diabetes drug also sold as Glucophage. Because it helps to regulate blood sugar, it's been shown to help diabetes patients also lose weight. Now, it's increasingly popular as a weight loss aid on its own. History Metformin was first developed in the 1920s, but it was not until later in the 20th century that it became extremely popular as a diabetes drug. It causes few side effects, and by regulating blood sugar, also helps to control hunger levels. It is also used for patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Weight Loss When you eat high-carbohydrate foods, the liver raises your blood sugar to compensate. In turn, your pancreas must produce insulin to deal with the extra sugar. However, insulin creates feelings of hunger. Metformin helps control the initial blood sugar spike from the liver, thus lessening those sudden hunger pangs. Success While preventing the side effects of diabetes, Metformin also helps lower blood sugar. It is only effective, however, if one avoids eating foods that create a rapid insulin spike. A diet based around moderate carbohydrate foods--whole grains, lean meats, fresh produce and dairy--combined with Metformin will usually lead to steady weight loss in diabetics. PCOS PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a common cause of obesity in women. The disease is thought to be linked to insulin resistance. As with diabetics, Metformin can help patients with PCOS better regulate their blood sugar levels. This in turn contributes to weight loss. Other Users Certain doctors now prescribe Metformin off-label to patients without either diabetes or PCOS. It must be taken under a doctor's supervision, as an overdose is possible. However, one common dosage is about 500 mg, three times a day, before eating. Harmony Singer is a writer ba Continue reading >>
Any Pcos Success Stories Out There?
Hello beautiful strangers! I am so excited to share that I got my period. It is such a small success, but this is the third in a row, on time (ON TIME! For me, that is so so so rare) and without any medication. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and here in Spain the doctors don't do much for PCOS; I went a whole year with no period and felt like a failure as a woman. It's not a baby, but it means my body is working more normally and my doctor believes that if we keep trying and being patient we will get pregnant. So, small victories, but everything is a big miracle. I wish you all the best of healing luck and know you are not alone on this journey! Your post brought tears to my eyes because you are me almost 3 years ago. I hope my story can you bring you some encouragement and hope! My husband and I were married at the time for 7 years and had been together for a total of 12 years. After getting married like most couples we wanted to spend the first year just being together. I always had issues with irregular cycles but no doctor ever expressed any concerns about it so neither did I. It was not until after the first 3 years of marriage we had not conceived yet, I went to an OB/GYN who then at the time told me I had PCOS......I had no clue what that was only that he told me in order to conceive I would have to take metformin, me not knowing any better at the time I took the the prescription home cried and told my husband that this would be the only way to have a baby. Him being the supportive husband he is said okay but the medication made me sooo sick so I stopped taking the medicine and decided to research PCOS. I thought there has to be another more natural way. During my time of research I met a lady at the local Christian book store who out of the blue cam Continue reading >>

Ask your doctor maybe. Good luck. I'm not diabetic and I personally didn't lose any weight on it. Shaky44 Posts: 272Member Member Posts: 272Member Member Most studies seem to show that patients starting on metformin lose weight. Those same studies show that patients who receive the placebo also lose weight. This phenomenon is likely due to the patients being in a clinical trial knowing they will have frequent physician visits where their weight will be recorded. This is often seen in clinical studies. That being said, it's easy to imagine that as your blood glucose levels don't experience the same swings, you will find it easier to control your appetite. I've lost over 100 lbs - all while on metformin - and to me the secret is to eat small meals frequently. Do not let yourself get too hungry. janesmith1 Posts: 2,073Member Member Posts: 2,073Member Member No good evidence suggests that Atkins accomplishes either. Prevention: Research into Atkins or other low-carb diets is sparse. Frequent spikes and dips in blood glucose after carb-heavy meals can, according to Atkins literature, lead to insulin resistance, a frequent precurs Continue reading >>
What Is Metformin? And Is It Right For You?
Are you one of the millions of women who’ve been diagnosed with PCOS or high blood sugar? Do you struggle every day with symptoms like excessive weight, mood swings, infertility, facial hair or acne? When you’re dealing with such terrible symptoms, finding a solution becomes your top priority. Hi, I’m Robin Nielsen, the Chief Wellness Officer here at Insulite Health. I’m so glad you’re here. I’ve personally experienced symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS, and I know the difficult challenges you face. Perhaps you’re wondering if prescription drugs might be that solution. In fact your doctor may suggest the drug Metformin, also known as Glucophage. What is Metformin, and is it right for you? Metformin is a drug originally used to treat high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It’s sometimes prescribed to women with PCOS because both diabetes and PCOS share an underlying cause. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to help get sugar into our cells to burn for fuel. I call insulin the key that unlocks the cell. Insulin resistance occurs when your body’s cells resist the effects of insulin, causing you to produce even more insulin and actually store the sugar in the blood as fat, here around your middle. Too much insulin leads to an imbalance of hormones, especially sex hormones. Metformin can improve your body’s response to insulin at the cellular level, so your body produces less insulin, which can stabilize your hormonal levels and lower blood sugar. Women who take Metformin for PCOS may see improvements in some of their symptoms, such as hirsutism, irregular menstrual cycles, and weight gain, but not without a price. Metformin’s use is associated with many side effects, some potentially serious or even life-threatening. Dig Continue reading >>
Rayane Lost 80 Pounds
You are here: Home / Before and After Photos / Rayane lost 80 pounds Ive got another story from someone with PCOS for you tonight. Rayane lost 80 pounds over the course of 11 months with calorie counting and food logging with My Fitness Pal. Here is what she shared with us: I have been contemplating on submitting my story on your page for months and I thought now is the time. Mine is a bit long and drawn out but I just hope it will encourage someone else. I have never been small, but I was never as big until 2012. In November 1998, I ended up in the hospital for abnormal bleeding and had to recieve a D&C to stop it and get 2 units of blood. In August of 1999, I ended up back in the hospital for the same thing and had to have another 2 units of blood. I was put on the depo shot, and in 6 months I gained 50 pounds as a result of that medicine. Needless to say, I didnt get another shot. From that day on, I kept gaining weight and my cycles were still bad. It took until 2005 for my doctor to figure out that I had Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome. That is what was causing my bad cycles. It made it hard for me to lose weight no matter how hard I tried. I was put on medicine and birth control to control my issues. Then in December of 2011, I that decided come January 1, 2012 I was done. I was going to do whatever I could to lose the weight. At my highest I was 265 pounds and it was Feburary of 2011. I started working out and watching what I ate. I use Myfitnesspal to keep track of what I ate and counting calories. Its not really a diet i just changed my lifestyle. I workout, Ieat alot of baked or grilled chicken. No white sugar, flour, rice, pasta. Only whole wheat or whole grain. Protein helps as well. I cheat once a week maybe but I get back on the grind. Most importantly I drin Continue reading >>
Ttc For 9+ Years - Any Metformin Success Stories
Another newby to the site, i must have seen this site over a thousand times due to the amount of on-line questions i have had over the years. Me and my fiance have been trying to convieve for over 9 years now, i was diagnosed with PCOS when i was in my teens. I have always struggled with my weight, never being fully successful in losing enough for IVF. I have been under the gyno for over 9 years, always to be told to go away and lose 2 stone. It got to much for me so i discharged myself from seeing them to give myself a break from it all. I went back in June 2015 to start things up again, turning 30 in Oct 14 really made me panic about how i am still struggling to concieve so decided enough was enough i needed better help than i was getting over the past 9 years. When i went back i was finally referred to the diabities centre (wasnt informed that Metformin could help PCOS until this point) I went to my appt in July 15 and was put on Metformin, 500mg a day first week then i went up to 1500mg a day. I have stuck to Slimming World and now lost 2s 2.5lb. I think the Metformin has been a huge help with the weight loss. I just want to know if there is anyone who was on Metformin for over 5 months and still had success in getting pregnant, now i have lost the weight i feel it could happen soon but keep getting my hopes up, its driving me insane! A Successful Pcos Weight Loss Story. (i Use To Think That Phrase Was A Paradox)
A Successful PCOS Weight Loss Story. (I Use to Think That Phrase Was a Paradox) I just wanted to take a moment to tell everyone how happy I am. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006. Since then I had gained 120 pounds steadily and gradually. Even when I got pregnant, it was gradual and steady weight gain. I wasn't able to shed all the baby weight right after. At the beginning of this month, I weighed almost 300 pounds. I had gone to the doctor for my yearly check-up. He wanted me to have some blood work done so I did it. Then he told me as we were discussing the results that I was really close to being considered pre-diabetic. He told me how important it was for me to turn that number around now while I still had the chance. I just moved here not too long ago, so this is a doctor I just barely met. I told him I would like to have more children, I would also like to be skinnier if not skinny again. When he was discussing my results with me, the focus was not on if-you-do-this-you'll-lose-weight, or if-you-do-this-you'll-get-pregnant. He only talked about how if I do this, I will be healthy. Something about how he was focused on my health (even if the other two can be solved simply by being healthy) struck me. He recommended I go on the Atkins diet. I had known for a while that I needed to go on a diet, I just hadn't ever really, really done it before. He had the Atkins book there that I bought from him. Then I went home and signed up on Atkins website for free. Now for the awesome part! From February 1, 2012 - February 29, 2012, I have lost 22 LBS!!!!! I exercise for 45 minutes 5 times a week. So for all my fellow PCOS ladies out there that are frustrated from working your butts off with zero results, I thought you would like to know a proven method for weight loss with PCO Continue reading >>
Pcos And Metformin – Is This Treatment Right For You?
Here at Flo Living headquarters I speak with many women suffering with PCOS who have either been offered Metformin and decided against it or have tried Metformin and it’s not worked for them. If you have a diagnosis of PCOS it’s very likely that at some point your doctor has suggested Metformin. I personally was what would be considered the “perfect” candidate for this treatment when I was in my 20s and suffering with PCOS – overweight, struggling with acne and a complete lack of periods. However, I never tried it myself – instead I created a protocol for myself that became Flo Living. I’ve since helped many women manage their PCOS successfully with this protocol, just as I did my own diagnosis. That said, I speak with women so often about the Metformin option that I want to share my perspective with you. Although I do not dismiss the option completely, I do have some caveats and concerns. What is Metformin? Metformin is a first-line medication for those suffering with type 2 diabetes. It is also presented as a treatment for PCOS sufferers who are also overweight or obese. Not all PCOS sufferers have weight gain as a symptom, it depends on the kind of PCOS. Women with the kind of PCOS that causes weight gain are usually insulin resistant. Metformin reduces overall insulin levels. Insulin resistance is when the cells of your body become resistant to the hormone insulin, preventing glucose from entering your cells to be used for energy, and instead causing soaring levels of sugar blood stream bringing about diabetes, pre-diabetes or insulin-resistant PCOS. The connection between insulin and PCOS is blood sugar regulation. We hear about this most commonly with diabetes, but it’s also very important with PCOS. An unstable, constantly spiking and crashing, bl Continue reading >>
Any Pcos Weight Loss Success Stories?
Hi, I am 23 years old and about 9 months ago I was told I have PCOS. I believe I have had it since I started having periods since I had many of the symptoms. The only symptom I never experienced (until recently) was weight gain. All growing up I was a very small child and throughout high school I was the same. My highest weight in high school was no more that 110lbs. I have never struggled with weight, until a few years ago. After I got married (and our eating habits only changed for the better) and shortly before marriage, I started putting on the pounds. Quickly! Within 5 months I had put on 30lbs then three months later 40 more! I couldn't believe my eyes. I never had this issue before! That's when I saw my OB, after being diagnosed I was told I needed to lose weight because thats what caused the PCOS, but I don't believe it, it just doesn't add up to me. Why the sudden weight gain? They lectured me and lectured me because I want to get pregnant and am obese now. All I have been told so far is I have to lose the weight, but I am exercising and eating right and I see nothing! I was put on Metformin 500mg 2X a day after being diagnosed and I have seen no change in weight or facial hair! I am frustrated because I hate the way I feel being this large. I guess my main question is are there ANY success stories out there of women losing weight with PCOS and taking metformin? I could really use some encouragement. I want so bad to start our family, but if I am this uncomfortable being my weight now, I fear how I will feel being pregnant. Continue reading >>
