Any Pcos Weight Loss Success Stories?

Hi, I am 23 years old and about 9 months ago I was told I have PCOS. I believe I have had it since I started having periods since I had many of the symptoms. The only symptom I never experienced (until recently) was weight gain. All growing up I was a very small child and throughout high school I was the same. My highest weight in high school was no more that 110lbs. I have never struggled with weight, until a few years ago. After I got married (and our eating habits only changed for the better) and shortly before marriage, I started putting on the pounds. Quickly! Within 5 months I had put on 30lbs then three months later 40 more! I couldn't believe my eyes. I never had this issue before! That's when I saw my OB, after being diagnosed I was told I needed to lose weight because thats what caused the PCOS, but I don't believe it, it just doesn't add up to me. Why the sudden weight gain? They lectured me and lectured me because I want to get pregnant and am obese now. All I have been told so far is I have to lose the weight, but I am exercising and eating right and I see nothing! I was put on Metformin 500mg 2X a day after being diagnosed and I have seen no change in weight or facial hair! I am frustrated because I hate the way I feel being this large. I guess my main question is are there ANY success stories out there of women losing weight with PCOS and taking metformin? I could really use some encouragement. I want so bad to start our family, but if I am this uncomfortable being my weight now, I fear how I will feel being pregnant. Continue reading >>

Any Pcos Success Stories Out There?

Hello beautiful strangers! I am so excited to share that I got my period. It is such a small success, but this is the third in a row, on time (ON TIME! For me, that is so so so rare) and without any medication. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and here in Spain the doctors don't do much for PCOS; I went a whole year with no period and felt like a failure as a woman. It's not a baby, but it means my body is working more normally and my doctor believes that if we keep trying and being patient we will get pregnant. So, small victories, but everything is a big miracle. I wish you all the best of healing luck and know you are not alone on this journey! Your post brought tears to my eyes because you are me almost 3 years ago. I hope my story can you bring you some encouragement and hope! My husband and I were married at the time for 7 years and had been together for a total of 12 years. After getting married like most couples we wanted to spend the first year just being together. I always had issues with irregular cycles but no doctor ever expressed any concerns about it so neither did I. It was not until after the first 3 years of marriage we had not conceived yet, I went to an OB/GYN who then at the time told me I had PCOS......I had no clue what that was only that he told me in order to conceive I would have to take metformin, me not knowing any better at the time I took the the prescription home cried and told my husband that this would be the only way to have a baby. Him being the supportive husband he is said okay but the medication made me sooo sick so I stopped taking the medicine and decided to research PCOS. I thought there has to be another more natural way. During my time of research I met a lady at the local Christian book store who out of the blue cam Continue reading >>

What Is Metformin? And Is It Right For You?

What Is Metformin? And Is It Right For You?

Are you one of the millions of women who’ve been diagnosed with PCOS or high blood sugar? Do you struggle every day with symptoms like excessive weight, mood swings, infertility, facial hair or acne? When you’re dealing with such terrible symptoms, finding a solution becomes your top priority. Hi, I’m Robin Nielsen, the Chief Wellness Officer here at Insulite Health. I’m so glad you’re here. I’ve personally experienced symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS, and I know the difficult challenges you face. Perhaps you’re wondering if prescription drugs might be that solution. In fact your doctor may suggest the drug Metformin, also known as Glucophage. What is Metformin, and is it right for you? Metformin is a drug originally used to treat high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It’s sometimes prescribed to women with PCOS because both diabetes and PCOS share an underlying cause. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to help get sugar into our cells to burn for fuel. I call insulin the key that unlocks the cell. Insulin resistance occurs when your body’s cells resist the effects of insulin, causing you to produce even more insulin and actually store the sugar in the blood as fat, here around your middle. Too much insulin leads to an imbalance of hormones, especially sex hormones. Metformin can improve your body’s response to insulin at the cellular level, so your body produces less insulin, which can stabilize your hormonal levels and lower blood sugar. Women who take Metformin for PCOS may see improvements in some of their symptoms, such as hirsutism, irregular menstrual cycles, and weight gain, but not without a price. Metformin’s use is associated with many side effects, some potentially serious or even life-threatening. Dig Continue reading >>

Rayane Lost 80 Pounds

You are here: Home / Before and After Photos / Rayane lost 80 pounds Ive got another story from someone with PCOS for you tonight. Rayane lost 80 pounds over the course of 11 months with calorie counting and food logging with My Fitness Pal. Here is what she shared with us: I have been contemplating on submitting my story on your page for months and I thought now is the time. Mine is a bit long and drawn out but I just hope it will encourage someone else. I have never been small, but I was never as big until 2012. In November 1998, I ended up in the hospital for abnormal bleeding and had to recieve a D&C to stop it and get 2 units of blood. In August of 1999, I ended up back in the hospital for the same thing and had to have another 2 units of blood. I was put on the depo shot, and in 6 months I gained 50 pounds as a result of that medicine. Needless to say, I didnt get another shot. From that day on, I kept gaining weight and my cycles were still bad. It took until 2005 for my doctor to figure out that I had Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome. That is what was causing my bad cycles. It made it hard for me to lose weight no matter how hard I tried. I was put on medicine and birth control to control my issues. Then in December of 2011, I that decided come January 1, 2012 I was done. I was going to do whatever I could to lose the weight. At my highest I was 265 pounds and it was Feburary of 2011. I started working out and watching what I ate. I use Myfitnesspal to keep track of what I ate and counting calories. Its not really a diet i just changed my lifestyle. I workout, Ieat alot of baked or grilled chicken. No white sugar, flour, rice, pasta. Only whole wheat or whole grain. Protein helps as well. I cheat once a week maybe but I get back on the grind. Most importantly I drin Continue reading >>

A Successful Pcos Weight Loss Story. (i Use To Think That Phrase Was A Paradox)

A Successful Pcos Weight Loss Story. (i Use To Think That Phrase Was A Paradox)

A Successful PCOS Weight Loss Story. (I Use to Think That Phrase Was a Paradox) I just wanted to take a moment to tell everyone how happy I am. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006. Since then I had gained 120 pounds steadily and gradually. Even when I got pregnant, it was gradual and steady weight gain. I wasn't able to shed all the baby weight right after. At the beginning of this month, I weighed almost 300 pounds. I had gone to the doctor for my yearly check-up. He wanted me to have some blood work done so I did it. Then he told me as we were discussing the results that I was really close to being considered pre-diabetic. He told me how important it was for me to turn that number around now while I still had the chance. I just moved here not too long ago, so this is a doctor I just barely met. I told him I would like to have more children, I would also like to be skinnier if not skinny again. When he was discussing my results with me, the focus was not on if-you-do-this-you'll-lose-weight, or if-you-do-this-you'll-get-pregnant. He only talked about how if I do this, I will be healthy. Something about how he was focused on my health (even if the other two can be solved simply by being healthy) struck me. He recommended I go on the Atkins diet. I had known for a while that I needed to go on a diet, I just hadn't ever really, really done it before. He had the Atkins book there that I bought from him. Then I went home and signed up on Atkins website for free. Now for the awesome part! From February 1, 2012 - February 29, 2012, I have lost 22 LBS!!!!! I exercise for 45 minutes 5 times a week. So for all my fellow PCOS ladies out there that are frustrated from working your butts off with zero results, I thought you would like to know a proven method for weight loss with PCO Continue reading >>

I Didnt Just Manage My Condition, I Beat It, And Wiped The Floor With It

I Didnt Just Manage My Condition, I Beat It, and Wiped the Floor With It Its Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Marks Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Marks Daily Apple community please contact me here . Ill continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading! This letter is long overdue, but the recent article you posted on the Weekend Link Love made me want to share my experience with a Primal lifestyle and PCOS. I was an active and skinny kid, generally healthy except for some seasonal allergies and a tendency to pick up every single cold that went through school. My family attributed it to a crowded public school, and I took all kinds of immune-supporting herbs that seemed to help for a while. Add to that, my diet was pretty awful: I subsisted on pasta, breads, and sugary stuff. Again, it didnt strike my family as being too out of the ordinary. All the kids I knew ate that way, or worse. My diet and health were never connected and never any cause for concern. By the time I was fifteen, it started to alarm my family and doctors that I hadnt yet developed a regular menstrual cycle. I was also physically underdeveloped. I didnt break 100 pounds until my sophomore year of high school and had no hips, breasts, or any markers of puberty. The only sign of any hormonal change was a wicked case of acne. A quick trip to the gynecologist with some blood work confirmed a hormone imbalance and a testosterone level three times the healthy range for a girl. Not good. Not good at all. I got put on the pill to straighten things out. Instantly, I was having regular cycles. Within two months, all the missing parts exploded out and I lo Continue reading >>

Best Way To Reverse Insulin Resistance

Best Way To Reverse Insulin Resistance

The Diabetes Prevention Program was a large, multi-centered study which involved over 3,000 adults who were pre-diabetic. Researchers split the subjects into three groups. The first group was told "You are pre-diabetic, lose weight" but no care or suggestions to accomplish this were offered to the subject. The second group was given the medication Metformin, which is a medication for diabetes. The major function of Metformin is to improve insulin sensitivity, and the subjects were treated only by adding the medication. The subjects of the last group were given specific instructions on diet and exercise and were monitored regularly. The group that progressed to diabetes first was the no-instruction group. The Metformin treated group had a 31% reduction in the progression of diabetes. The group that did the best with a 58% reduction in the progression of diabetes was the lifestyle change group. My practice was created to provide this comprehensive lifestyle treatment. When medication is added to this lifestyle treatment, I find the effects are synergistic. In summary, Insulin Resistance is a common metabolic condition that most people who struggle with weight have, and often are not aware of it. It is absolutely treatable and treatment is necessary to allow weight loss and long term weight maintenance. Our program was created and designed to reverse this condition, to help you lose weight and gain improved health. IslandSneezerooo Posts: 268Member Member Posts: 268Member Member Surely there's some at-goal success stories? shesang Posts: 24Member Member Posts: 24Member Member Not at goal but I have managed to lose 70 lbs and keep it off for almost ten years. Twenty years ago I started by going on a low fat diet and lost 30 lbs then moved on to Weight Watchers where I lost an additional 40 lbs. I have worked out fairly consistently over the twenty years but about 10 years ago I really ramped it up by working with a trainer and was on a protein/carb balanced diet. That got me down an extra 20 lbs but as soon as I strayed from my eating plan I gained the 20 lbs back quite quickly. I still have 40 lbs to go and it has been very difficult. Just recently I realized I must stick to my eating and exercise plan 100% or I won't lose any weight. I'm not really sure I want to be that rigid as life isn't fun without a little flexibility. I have been on Spironolactone for 20 years, was on the BCP to regulate periods (no longer on that), and have tried Metformin (didn't work for me). In order to maintain the 70 lb loss I exercise 4 to 6 times a week (hiking, biking, walking, swimming) and eat a very balanced diet with minimal carbs such as bread, potatoes, rice, etc. When I do have them it's a sprouted grain bread, brown rice or sweet potato. I pair fruit with a protein and eat healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil. So there you have it, that's my story. I would love to hear yours IslandSneezerooo Posts: 268Member Member Posts: 268Member Member @shesang Thanks for sharing! I don't have a success story, that's why I asked... Pcos Success Stories Please??

Pcos Success Stories Please??

Hi anyone have success stories with PCOS? I posted this over a week ago in the PCOS forum about gluten free mama's...I am now 6w3d and feeling the sweet torture of non-stop nausea that makes my heart soar! This got long, but here it is! Count me in the unexpectedly pregnant after going gluten free category! I am 36 now and we began TTC when I was 26. I knew at that time that I had PCOS and that it would be difficult. We tried on our own for a bit to no avail and then started working with a fertility specialist. Long story short I escalated from Metformin, to Metformin and Clomid, to injectables. I had 3 successful IUIs and 3 conceptions that happened with medication and no IUI. All 6 resulted in early losses. I had low progesterone on some, and used progesterone suppositories on 4 of the 6, but it did not help. 3 years ago we decided to stop trying. The hormones from the injectables were so bad on my body and mind. I swung from incredibly weepy to furious at the drop of a hat, and gained about 60 pounds in a year. It was taking a heavy toll on my psyche to keep feeling "so close" just to end in sadness. About a year ago I decided to try a paleo-ish diet. I ate paleo about 80-90% of the time. I saw big improvements in my mood and weight started to slowly come off (weight loss is never easy with PCOS, for me anyway). Around my 36th birthday in September I got fed-up with the amount of medication I was on and spoke to my primary about going off everything and managing through food and lifestyle changes with the help of a naturopath. I stopped taking Metformin, Spironolactone, and Minocycline, and antibiotic I had been taking for 20 years due to cystic acne. Immediately I got a couple of cysts on my forehead and started to get nervous. I learned through my tests ordered th Continue reading >>

Metformin Helped These Two Women Conceive

Metformin Helped These Two Women Conceive

I found out that I had PCOS about 2 years after my first child was born. I was then just put on birth control pills since at the time I wasn't trying to conceive. After I got married, I went off the birth control pills and all the problems started. I gained weight, about 15 lbs. in 2 months, no ovulating, no periods, depression, polycystic ovaries and constant ovarian pain. Then my ob/gyn put me on Glucophage and within 2 weeks I had a follicle of perfect size, ready to ovulate, lost about 5 lbs and felt I had hope finally. Two weeks later, I got my first period on my own without birth control pills!!! Three cycles later I found out I was pregnant with my second child, a son. The one month before he turned 1, I found out I was pregnant with my third child, without any help or Glucophage!!! But now after my third, my problems are slowly starting up again. So I am about to go back on the Glucophage in hopes to get pregnant for a fourth time and hopefully that will "fix" me again!! There is hope for women with PCOS. Diet, low carb, like South Beach, exercise and knowledge are what helped me out and keep my going, happily!! Good luck to all!!! As I sit here reading all these success stories, I am holding my 3 1/2 month old daughter in my lap. I was diagnosed with PCOS in October of 2003. My symptoms were ignored by my OB/GYN for about 3 years. Then my symptoms came too severe to endure. I was bleeding severely, in so much pain, and could barely stay conscious. I landed in an ambulance because I lost consciousness due to massive blood loss. Luckily, my wonderful husband demanded I see a new doctor, who was recommended by a co-worker. My new OB/GYN knew exactly what it was & started treatment immediately. I had 2 large cysts removed, ovarian drilling, and was put on metformi Continue reading >>

Pcos Success Stories

Pcos Success Stories

Hello, I was just recently diagnosed with pcos a month ago. I have been on metformin for about 2.5 weeks now and I am trying to be very hopeful that this is going to work. Anyone have luck with just metformin? I know I need to lose weight too. I would love to hear anyones success story. We have only been trying for 6 months now, but due to the pcos have not had 6 cycles to try. Hi! I was diagnosed with pcos a few months ago and I was immediately put on Metformin. It tore up my stomach for a while until I got used to them. They also assisted me in losing about 25 pounds, but it stopped there with weight loss. They changed my cycle from 40 days to 35. I have gotten pregnant on them but still miscarried Doc believes due to low progesterone and a lutal phase defect so Im now also taking Vitex 4x a day. Vitwx changed my cycle from 35 days to 23 and is supposed to help with ovulation, progesterone etc. So im praying we get pregnant and the Vitex has helped my ovulation. Not a really good success story but my experience on Metformin. Hope this helps! I tried for a year to conceive my first, until I was (finally) diagnosed with PCOS and I started metformin. I got pregnant the very first cycle on it. I had lost about 60-70 pounds over the year we were ttc so that helped I'm sure, but the metformin was the game changer. I was diagnosed with PCOS in college. My husband and I tried for a year before seeing a specialist. He didn't believe that I would have trouble. I used chlomid and a trigger shot and we did times intercourse for 6 months. We then started chlomid a trigger shot and IUI. We had success with that. I am not almost 20weeks pregnant. I have PCOS and we are trying without medical intervention. I found premama fertility online and heard it's great for women with PCOS. If Continue reading >>
