Metformin And Weight Loss
Oral antihyperglycemic drug Metformin is one of the most prescribed antidiabetic drugs in the UK, Canada and the USA. For several decades, Metformin is used for the first line therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes. Metformin story is not restricted only by the diabetes treatment. Between 1998 and 2015, the influence of Metformin on weight loss was studied.Reliable study results of Metformin and weight loss are published in different biomedical literature, including free science journal PubMed. In addition, reviews about Metformin and weight loss can be found on authors blogs and online forums (obesity forums as well). Contradictory information about Metformin is published in the results of clinical studies and reviews. Studies demonstrate that Metformin often promotes weight loss. However, weight-reducing effect of Metformin is poorly pronounced. Therefore, this hypoglycemic drug is ineffective when treating obesity. A lot of success stories confirming that Metformin and weight loss it is not a myth, but a reality can be found in the reviews of diabetics. Given the fact that reviews about Metformin are published by anonymous authors; such comments raise reasonable doubts. Negative effect of these stories is that the desire to use Metformin to combat overweight and obesity arises in non-diabetic patients. In recent years, reviews about Metformin and weight loss have been published by women, who use this drug to control the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Metformin can actually stimulate ovulation, but it is not approved to treat PCOS. Therefore, non-diabetics women with PCOS use Metformin off-label.Information about Metformin and weight loss can be interesting both for obese diabetics and for non-diabetic patients with overweight or obesity. The results of Continue reading >>

Symptoms: slightly overweight, hair growth and irregular periods. 1st DD conceived after a year and 6 cycles with Metformin and Clomid. Healthy pregnancy and delivery. My pregnancy seemed to reset my body and I started getting regular periods 4 months postpartum. 2nd DD was conceived first month of trying. I was on Metformin and a low dose of Clomid. Healthy pregnancy and delivery. This tracker I have been using has a free app called Premom from [email protected] I am finding it very helpful to visualize what is going on in my cycle. You can capture images of your tests (opks etc) which is nice I'm a little late seeing this, but after trying over two years with pcos this was what worked for me. I was already on metformin ER 1500/day. Whole 30 diet. Ovasitol. (We also saw a fertility doc that had me on Continue reading >>

Metformin Weight Loss Success Stories
Metformin is a diabetes drug also sold as Glucophage. Because it helps to regulate blood sugar, it's been shown to help diabetes patients also lose weight. Now, it's increasingly popular as a weight loss aid on its own. History Metformin was first developed in the 1920s, but it was not until later in the 20th century that it became extremely popular as a diabetes drug. It causes few side effects, and by regulating blood sugar, also helps to control hunger levels. It is also used for patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Weight Loss When you eat high-carbohydrate foods, the liver raises your blood sugar to compensate. In turn, your pancreas must produce insulin to deal with the extra sugar. However, insulin creates feelings of hunger. Metformin helps control the initial blood sugar spike from the liver, thus lessening those sudden hunger pangs. Success While preventing the side effects of diabetes, Metformin also helps lower blood sugar. It is only effective, however, if one avoids eating foods that create a rapid insulin spike. A diet based around moderate carbohydrate foods--whole grains, lean meats, fresh produce and dairy--combined with Metformin will usually lead to steady weight loss in diabetics. PCOS PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a common cause of obesity in women. The disease is thought to be linked to insulin resistance. As with diabetics, Metformin can help patients with PCOS better regulate their blood sugar levels. This in turn contributes to weight loss. Other Users Certain doctors now prescribe Metformin off-label to patients without either diabetes or PCOS. It must be taken under a doctor's supervision, as an overdose is possible. However, one common dosage is about 500 mg, three times a day, before eating. Harmony Singer is a writer ba Continue reading >>
Success Stories With Pcos, Exercise, Met. And/or Shakeology?
Success stories with PCOS, exercise, Met. and/or Shakeology? I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago and my fiancee and I have been trying for #1 since Dec 2016. My doctor told me I am not ovulating and have low progesterone levels which is basically leaving my body really confused. So she put me on Metformin (500x2/day) and said to exercise every day. I've been doing exactly that and started drinking Shakeology in February, and my cycle lengths have gone from 60 days-ish to less than 40 days. But I'm still not ovulating :'( My gyno keeps telling me to just keep doing what I'm doing (she approves of using the shake during TTC and pregnancy) and is excited about my weight loss. But I just feel like it's not happening soon enough!! Does anyone have any success stories with PCOS around exercising, metformin and/or shakeology? I'm feeling really defeated this morning but also hopeful that after AF is done this month I'll ovulate. I could use some hope <3 Thanks ladies Hi! I have mild pcos and I've never been overweight. I've worked out 4-7 days a week for the last 9 or so years. And was drinking Shakeology when I started ttc. So a few differences. I was put on Clomid because I had long cycles and that made my doctor feel as if I wasn't ovulating. I did get pregnant that first month on it but then miscarried at 15 weeks. After that I was sent to a RE who diagnosed me with mild pcos (only one ovary shows signs of it). My doctor put me on 500mg of Metformin once a day and prescribed me Femera. I took the Metformin while waiting for my cycle to start for the Femera and I got pregnant. Never even had to take the fertility meds. My RE kept telling me to stop drinking the shakeology and I refused. 2 weeks after I stopped using it and started the metformin I fell pregnant. They Continue reading >>
Metformin Helped These Two Women Conceive
I found out that I had PCOS about 2 years after my first child was born. I was then just put on birth control pills since at the time I wasn't trying to conceive. After I got married, I went off the birth control pills and all the problems started. I gained weight, about 15 lbs. in 2 months, no ovulating, no periods, depression, polycystic ovaries and constant ovarian pain. Then my ob/gyn put me on Glucophage and within 2 weeks I had a follicle of perfect size, ready to ovulate, lost about 5 lbs and felt I had hope finally. Two weeks later, I got my first period on my own without birth control pills!!! Three cycles later I found out I was pregnant with my second child, a son. The one month before he turned 1, I found out I was pregnant with my third child, without any help or Glucophage!!! But now after my third, my problems are slowly starting up again. So I am about to go back on the Glucophage in hopes to get pregnant for a fourth time and hopefully that will "fix" me again!! There is hope for women with PCOS. Diet, low carb, like South Beach, exercise and knowledge are what helped me out and keep my going, happily!! Good luck to all!!! As I sit here reading all these success stories, I am holding my 3 1/2 month old daughter in my lap. I was diagnosed with PCOS in October of 2003. My symptoms were ignored by my OB/GYN for about 3 years. Then my symptoms came too severe to endure. I was bleeding severely, in so much pain, and could barely stay conscious. I landed in an ambulance because I lost consciousness due to massive blood loss. Luckily, my wonderful husband demanded I see a new doctor, who was recommended by a co-worker. My new OB/GYN knew exactly what it was & started treatment immediately. I had 2 large cysts removed, ovarian drilling, and was put on metformi Continue reading >>

Any Fat Pcos Women Who Got Pregnant Naturally?
I'm having treatment and losing weight but wondered if there are any success stories to cheer me up! After 12 months of trying my doctor sent me for tests in march which confirmed I had PCOS. I had started to lose wieght before it was confirmed (was 17 stone in Jan but dropped two stone by April) but the doctor told me that it was going to be a struggle for me to concieve. Three weeks after the diagnosis I was feeling a little rough and was a few days late, did a test which came back positive. I am now at 28 weeks all going fine. I get the feeling my body just want to prove the doctor wrong, won't ever forget the phone call telling him I had fertility drugs first time around. Second and third pregnancies were natural but I had very early miscarriages. Fourth time was natural and DS2 is 4 months. Are you taking metformin? My PCOS specialist regards it as a highly effective fertility drug as well as treatment for PCOS. I took it throughout both pregnancies. Since having DS2 I've lost a lot of weight and am no longer overweight. Hi, I have PCOS, I'm not especially fat def but not skinny PCOS either. Diagnosed around 6 years ago, no cycles at all after I came off pill. Lost 1.5 stone (that was all I needed to loose) following the PCOS diet book by Colette Harris did the foresight programme, had weekly acupuncture and went to gym 3 times a week; that was enough to conceive naturally. Was offered metformin but decided that wanted to try drug free route first instead. 14 stone/5 foot 2 PCOS sufferer here - i.e. very overweight! Was prepared by entire medical profession for terrible traumas getting pregnant - especially as I was 30 when I started trying so add in being "old" to the fertility mix! Fell pregnant first month of trying both times and have a 3 year old and 10 week Continue reading >>
Any Pcos Success Stories Out There?
Hello beautiful strangers! I am so excited to share that I got my period. It is such a small success, but this is the third in a row, on time (ON TIME! For me, that is so so so rare) and without any medication. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and here in Spain the doctors don't do much for PCOS; I went a whole year with no period and felt like a failure as a woman. It's not a baby, but it means my body is working more normally and my doctor believes that if we keep trying and being patient we will get pregnant. So, small victories, but everything is a big miracle. I wish you all the best of healing luck and know you are not alone on this journey! Your post brought tears to my eyes because you are me almost 3 years ago. I hope my story can you bring you some encouragement and hope! My husband and I were married at the time for 7 years and had been together for a total of 12 years. After getting married like most couples we wanted to spend the first year just being together. I always had issues with irregular cycles but no doctor ever expressed any concerns about it so neither did I. It was not until after the first 3 years of marriage we had not conceived yet, I went to an OB/GYN who then at the time told me I had PCOS......I had no clue what that was only that he told me in order to conceive I would have to take metformin, me not knowing any better at the time I took the the prescription home cried and told my husband that this would be the only way to have a baby. Him being the supportive husband he is said okay but the medication made me sooo sick so I stopped taking the medicine and decided to research PCOS. I thought there has to be another more natural way. During my time of research I met a lady at the local Christian book store who out of the blue cam Continue reading >>
Pcos Success Stories
Hello, I was just recently diagnosed with pcos a month ago. I have been on metformin for about 2.5 weeks now and I am trying to be very hopeful that this is going to work. Anyone have luck with just metformin? I know I need to lose weight too. I would love to hear anyones success story. We have only been trying for 6 months now, but due to the pcos have not had 6 cycles to try. Hi! I was diagnosed with pcos a few months ago and I was immediately put on Metformin. It tore up my stomach for a while until I got used to them. They also assisted me in losing about 25 pounds, but it stopped there with weight loss. They changed my cycle from 40 days to 35. I have gotten pregnant on them but still miscarried Doc believes due to low progesterone and a lutal phase defect so Im now also taking Vitex 4x a day. Vitwx changed my cycle from 35 days to 23 and is supposed to help with ovulation, progesterone etc. So im praying we get pregnant and the Vitex has helped my ovulation. Not a really good success story but my experience on Metformin. Hope this helps! I tried for a year to conceive my first, until I was (finally) diagnosed with PCOS and I started metformin. I got pregnant the very first cycle on it. I had lost about 60-70 pounds over the year we were ttc so that helped I'm sure, but the metformin was the game changer. I was diagnosed with PCOS in college. My husband and I tried for a year before seeing a specialist. He didn't believe that I would have trouble. I used chlomid and a trigger shot and we did times intercourse for 6 months. We then started chlomid a trigger shot and IUI. We had success with that. I am not almost 20weeks pregnant. I have PCOS and we are trying without medical intervention. I found premama fertility online and heard it's great for women with PCOS. If Continue reading >>
Rayane Lost 80 Pounds
You are here: Home / Before and After Photos / Rayane lost 80 pounds Ive got another story from someone with PCOS for you tonight. Rayane lost 80 pounds over the course of 11 months with calorie counting and food logging with My Fitness Pal. Here is what she shared with us: I have been contemplating on submitting my story on your page for months and I thought now is the time. Mine is a bit long and drawn out but I just hope it will encourage someone else. I have never been small, but I was never as big until 2012. In November 1998, I ended up in the hospital for abnormal bleeding and had to recieve a D&C to stop it and get 2 units of blood. In August of 1999, I ended up back in the hospital for the same thing and had to have another 2 units of blood. I was put on the depo shot, and in 6 months I gained 50 pounds as a result of that medicine. Needless to say, I didnt get another shot. From that day on, I kept gaining weight and my cycles were still bad. It took until 2005 for my doctor to figure out that I had Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome. That is what was causing my bad cycles. It made it hard for me to lose weight no matter how hard I tried. I was put on medicine and birth control to control my issues. Then in December of 2011, I that decided come January 1, 2012 I was done. I was going to do whatever I could to lose the weight. At my highest I was 265 pounds and it was Feburary of 2011. I started working out and watching what I ate. I use Myfitnesspal to keep track of what I ate and counting calories. Its not really a diet i just changed my lifestyle. I workout, Ieat alot of baked or grilled chicken. No white sugar, flour, rice, pasta. Only whole wheat or whole grain. Protein helps as well. I cheat once a week maybe but I get back on the grind. Most importantly I drin Continue reading >>
Pcos Weight Loss Success Stories?
IslandSneezerooo Posts: 268Member Member Posts: 268Member Member Surely there's some at-goal success stories? shesang Posts: 24Member Member Posts: 24Member Member Not at goal but I have managed to lose 70 lbs and keep it off for almost ten years. Twenty years ago I started by going on a low fat diet and lost 30 lbs then moved on to Weight Watchers where I lost an additional 40 lbs. I have worked out fairly consistently over the twenty years but about 10 years ago I really ramped it up by working with a trainer and was on a protein/carb balanced diet. That got me down an extra 20 lbs but as soon as I strayed from my eating plan I gained the 20 lbs back quite quickly. I still have 40 lbs to go and it has been very difficult. Just recently I realized I must stick to my eating and exercise plan 100% or I won't lose any weight. I'm not really sure I want to be that rigid as life isn't fun without a little flexibility. I have been on Spironolactone for 20 years, was on the BCP to regulate periods (no longer on that), and have tried Metformin (didn't work for me). In order to maintain the 70 lb loss I exercise 4 to 6 times a week (hiking, biking, walking, swimming) and eat a very balanced diet with minimal carbs such as bread, potatoes, rice, etc. When I do have them it's a sprouted grain bread, brown rice or sweet potato. I pair fruit with a protein and eat healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil. So there you have it, that's my story. I would love to hear yours IslandSneezerooo Posts: 268Member Member Posts: 268Member Member @shesang Thanks for sharing! I don't have a success story, that's why I asked... Pcos Success Stories Please??
Hi anyone have success stories with PCOS? I posted this over a week ago in the PCOS forum about gluten free mama's...I am now 6w3d and feeling the sweet torture of non-stop nausea that makes my heart soar! This got long, but here it is! Count me in the unexpectedly pregnant after going gluten free category! I am 36 now and we began TTC when I was 26. I knew at that time that I had PCOS and that it would be difficult. We tried on our own for a bit to no avail and then started working with a fertility specialist. Long story short I escalated from Metformin, to Metformin and Clomid, to injectables. I had 3 successful IUIs and 3 conceptions that happened with medication and no IUI. All 6 resulted in early losses. I had low progesterone on some, and used progesterone suppositories on 4 of the 6, but it did not help. 3 years ago we decided to stop trying. The hormones from the injectables were so bad on my body and mind. I swung from incredibly weepy to furious at the drop of a hat, and gained about 60 pounds in a year. It was taking a heavy toll on my psyche to keep feeling "so close" just to end in sadness. About a year ago I decided to try a paleo-ish diet. I ate paleo about 80-90% of the time. I saw big improvements in my mood and weight started to slowly come off (weight loss is never easy with PCOS, for me anyway). Around my 36th birthday in September I got fed-up with the amount of medication I was on and spoke to my primary about going off everything and managing through food and lifestyle changes with the help of a naturopath. I stopped taking Metformin, Spironolactone, and Minocycline, and antibiotic I had been taking for 20 years due to cystic acne. Immediately I got a couple of cysts on my forehead and started to get nervous. I learned through my tests ordered th Continue reading >>

Pcos And Metformin – Is This Treatment Right For You?
Here at Flo Living headquarters I speak with many women suffering with PCOS who have either been offered Metformin and decided against it or have tried Metformin and it’s not worked for them. If you have a diagnosis of PCOS it’s very likely that at some point your doctor has suggested Metformin. I personally was what would be considered the “perfect” candidate for this treatment when I was in my 20s and suffering with PCOS – overweight, struggling with acne and a complete lack of periods. However, I never tried it myself – instead I created a protocol for myself that became Flo Living. I’ve since helped many women manage their PCOS successfully with this protocol, just as I did my own diagnosis. That said, I speak with women so often about the Metformin option that I want to share my perspective with you. Although I do not dismiss the option completely, I do have some caveats and concerns. What is Metformin? Metformin is a first-line medication for those suffering with type 2 diabetes. It is also presented as a treatment for PCOS sufferers who are also overweight or obese. Not all PCOS sufferers have weight gain as a symptom, it depends on the kind of PCOS. Women with the kind of PCOS that causes weight gain are usually insulin resistant. Metformin reduces overall insulin levels. Insulin resistance is when the cells of your body become resistant to the hormone insulin, preventing glucose from entering your cells to be used for energy, and instead causing soaring levels of sugar blood stream bringing about diabetes, pre-diabetes or insulin-resistant PCOS. The connection between insulin and PCOS is blood sugar regulation. We hear about this most commonly with diabetes, but it’s also very important with PCOS. An unstable, constantly spiking and crashing, bl Continue reading >>
