This Ketosis and the Fat loss video are not properly set up, the explanations are in the comments not in the blog post which is over 2 years old. ___________________________________________ My review and results of the Bodybuilding Ketogenic Diet. Ketogenic / Keto comes from the word Ketones. The Ketogenic diet was first established/constructed as one of the alternatives of curing Epillepsy in children. Epilepsy as we know it is the neurological disorder of the brain to not function efficiently because of the cortical neurons firing excessively, hypersynchronously, or both, leading to temporary disruption of normal brain function. This might affect, for example, the muscles, the senses, consciousness, or a combination. A seizure can be focal (confined to one part of the brain) or generalized (spread widely throughout the brain and leading to a loss of consciousness). However this all occurs when the body/brain is using Glucose as its primary source of energy. In order to remove Glucose as the primary fuel, they needed to remove the macronutrient that most readily converts to Glucose, viz. Carbohydrates. Disallowing ingestion of Carbohydrates/Sugars into the body blunts the body’s Insulin production and activity, simply because the function of Insulin is to maintain blood sugar within 80-120 mg/dl. Once there are no sugars in the blood(blood glucose coming in from carbohydrates) there is no requirement for Insulin. Blunting of Insulin works well and good, but now the body needs to find an alternative source of energy to fuel itself and the brain whereby come in Ketones. It does so by increasing production of the Glucagon hormone, which increas Continue reading >>

The Keto Diet For Women

The Keto Diet For Women

The Keto Diet, or Ketogenic Diet, can be undertaken by both men and women. This diet relies on a high intake of protein and fat such as meat, seafood, olive oil, eggs and small amounts of vegetables. Women can experience a number of health benefits with this diet including hormonal balance, weight loss and even an anti-aging effect. You should consult your doctor before undertaking this diet as it can be nutritionally restrictive. A multivitamin and mineral should be taken to supplement the Ketogenic Diet. Video of the Day The Ketogenic Diet involves eating fats and proteins while eliminating virtually all carbohydrates. The only permitted carbohydrates are vegetables, such as leafy green salads, and overall your carbohydrate intake must be kept below 50 g per day. Once your body is deprived of carbohydrates, it goes into a state known as ketosis in which both dietary and excess body fat is converted into ketones in the liver and used to fuel your brain and muscles. This diet forces your body to fuel itself through fat, not sugar, and carries with it a number of health benefits for women. The high-fat Ketogenic diet has many benefits. According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, women placed on a high fat diet had higher levels of estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone and testosterone than women placed on a low fat diet. These hormones are vital for female health. Estradiol regulates growth hormone for tissue and reproductive organs, dehydroepiandrosterone is important for reproductive health and memory and acts as an anti-depressant and testosterone helps to strengthen bones and muscles and improves sex drive. The Ketogenic Diet is a potent fat loss diet for women. Jonathan Desprospo of bodybuilding.com says that the main benefit of the Ketogenic die Continue reading >>

Q&a With Dave Palumbo: April 15, 2009

My nan is also suffering from cellulitus too. The local doctor and district Nurses are usless! I really don't think they know what they are doing! She was in hospital with it weeks ago anf her feet are still swollen. She keeps her feet raised when she can. Other than that, ay idears on how to help the swelling go down faster? Shes not been able to wear shoes or slippers for weeks nows (shes 85) DP: I wore a thigh high pressure stocking for 3 weeks. People made fun of me, but it worked! _____ Dave what would you suggest for somebody using your diet who is losing weight too fast and flatting out getting weaker. Would upping the fats be best? Or having carb up days? I am a fairly big guy, 183cm and started dieting at 143kg, I have been following your diet for 3 days in a row then i eat whateva i want mainly carbs every fourth day then diet 3 days repeat etc. In 6 weeks im down to 130kg, the first couple of weeks i lost water weight as i expected but now i feel like im losing weight too fast, too depleted. On my diet days im eating 400-600g protein and about 150-200g fat DP: You're not using my diet. If you follow my diet plan as I laid it out at the beginning of the thread, you follow it every day and get one cheat meal. If you are losing weight too fast (which I doubt) then reduce your cardio. ____ Hey Dave. I had an appointment with a back specialist yesterday and I was told I have to take a break from lifting weights and stressful exercise for 3 months because it could affect the healing. I've had problems with it since I was 15 so I think I'll go with it. I was however thinking I could do wrist/reverse wrist curls for my forearms in the meantime as I feel no strain when I do this exercise. If I go ahead with this do you think I should still keep up my 6 meals a day and Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet For Bodybuilding With Palumbo And Dr. Huge

I love keto, however, a couple of points. The Saturated fat issue you bring up is somewhat of a myth. 1. Saturated fat levels found in the blood which leads to heart disease, only raise in the presence of carb. Something you don't need to worry about when your on Keto. The myth has been debunked by various studies produced in the last couple of years. You do mention moderate amounts are ok which is correct but most people hear Saturated and run for the hills. 2. A moderate protein Moderate fat diet is not Ketogenic in nature. The higher amount of protein will in fact slow the process of getting into ketosis and in some cases prevent it. Nothing worse than being in that limbo lethargic section trying to get into ketosis, this is why most people give up on day 3 when they have zero energy. True Keto is 80% + Fat and was develloped for kids with Epilespy. Keep up the good work! Continue reading >>

The Definitive Guide To Why Low-carb Dieting Sucks

The Definitive Guide To Why Low-carb Dieting Sucks

The low-carb diet is the latest fad to take America by storm. And like most fad diets, it has a pretty sales pitch but can’t deliver the goods. Here’s why. A decade ago dietary fat was the vilest of macronutrients but these days it’s the carbohydrate. If we’re to believe the doomsayers, eating carbohydrates produces lots of nasty insulin, which in turn triggers rapid fat storage of damn near anything we eat. The key to health, vitality, and leanness, they say, is to eat as few carbohydrates as possible. Well, they’re wrong. Unless you’ve overweight and completely sedentary, low-carb dieting sucks, and I’m going to explain why. You Don’t Lose Fat Faster on a Low-Carb Diet That statement is basically blasphemous these days, but the general advice of going on a low-carb diet to maximize fat loss is scientifically bankrupt. There are about 20 studies that low-carb proponents bandy about as definitive proof of the superiority of low-carb dieting for weight loss. This, this, and this are common examples. If you simply read the abstracts of these studies, low-carb dieting definitely seems more effective, and this type of glib “research” is what most low-carbers base their beliefs on. But there’s a big problem with many of these studies, and it has to do with protein intake. The problem is the low-carb diets in these studies invariably contained more protein than the low-fat diets. Yes, one for one…without fail. What we’re actually looking at in these studies is a high-protein, low-carb diet vs. low-protein, higher-carb diet, and the former wins every time. But we can’t ignore the high-protein part and say it’s more effective because of the low-carb element. In fact, better designed and executed studies prove the opposite: that when protein intake Continue reading >>

The Real Deal On Fat Loss Diets – Part 2: The Ketogenic Diet And Carb Cycling

The Real Deal On Fat Loss Diets – Part 2: The Ketogenic Diet And Carb Cycling

In part 1 of this two-part series investigating the best diets for fat loss and optimal health, we explored the pros and cons of the Paleo Diet and compared this plan with the typical high carb/protein and moderate fat bodybuilding regime followed by millions of fitness devotees the world over. Now we will turn our attention to two further purported fat loss and health boosting dietary approaches, the Ketogenic Diet and Carb Cycling, both effective in their own way but also controversial in many respects. The Ketogenic Diet A high fat, moderate protein, low carbohydrate nutritional approach, the ketogenic diet was first popularized in the 1920’s and 1930’s as a non-pharmacological way to treat seizure activity resulting from epilepsy. However, following the release of a newer and more sophisticated range of anticonvulsant drugs, this diet was largely abandoned. Ketone bodies – free fatty acid energy substrates – are produced when fat is converted to fatty acids in the liver to replace carbohydrates as a fuel source. People living with epilepsy are not the only population to have benefitted from the ‘keto’ method. Bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts have also hopped on the keto bandwagon with hopes of carving excess fat from their physiques, and esteemed trainers such as Dave Palumbo routinely use this method to dial their clients in before bodybuilding events. How It Works When our diets are depleted of carbs we enter a state of ketosis due to low glycogen levels. It is during ketosis that our brain consumes the aforementioned ketone bodies (β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate), formed during a process called ketogenesis, in order to prevent muscle protein depletion. As the rationale goes, fat stores are then used for energy in the absence of carbohydrates, Continue reading >>

Part K: Ketogenic Diets

Part K: Ketogenic Diets

On Ketogenic diets: What do you think about Ketogenic diets for naturals, would they come in to flat, would they be able to still put on muscle and get pumps? Ketogenic diets have always been thought of as ‘protein sparing’ because ketones spare blood glucose which will reduce gluconeogenesis (conversion of amino acids to glucose) and ketones can be used as fuel, however ketones can only be used by aerobic metabolism. Weightlifting is quite anaerobic and studies have shown performance is very closely correlated to levels of muscle glycogen & glucose availability. Is keto a good way to lose fat very quickly? yes. But if you give yourself ample time… why not have carbs? They are not evil and are quite useful. Also keto diets will make it more difficult to fill out when it comes time to do so, it takes weeks to adapt to a ketogenic diet, so when you come off of keto it will take weeks to adapt to carbohydrates back in the diet and so if you are trying to carb up a few days before the show after you did keto for 12 + weeks I’m afraid you will have very little idea what to expect as you will essentially be challenging your body with something it isn’t accustomed to. If you choose to do a ketogenic diet and not re-introduce carbohydrates, I would do a moderate protein/fat load and only increase carbs very slightly. Finally, I think some people are better with keto diets than others. I think the mental aspect cannot be discounted. Some people just mentally cannot handle carbs. That’s fine, keto is probably better for them, but in my opinion, if you don’t absolutely have to do keto, you are better off not doing it as it really complicated trying to properly fill someone out for a show and has not been shown to be superior to an isocaloric high protein non-ketogeni Continue reading >>

If you're new here, you may want to check out my Where To Start page. Thanks for visiting! Make sure you Like Us on Facebook For Exclusive Content, Supplement Give Aways and More I want a ketogenic diet for weight loss or I want a ketogenic diet for bodybuilding. Those are usually two of the phrases that I hear when someone comes to me and is looking to start a ketogenic diet. They have read about them online and really want to try it since people claim they are the fastest ways to lose fat but are they? Some Background Please In order to prevent you from falling asleep while reading this and for the sake of providing useable information, I’m going to give you a very quick overview of what a ketogenic diet is. A ketogenic diet is a high protein, moderate to high fat, very low carbohydrate diet. The diet forces the body to burn fat instead of ingested carbohydrates. Since there are no incoming carbohydrates, the body changes its primary fuel source to fats and the liver converts fats into ketone bodies. The ketone bodies then pass into the brain and replace glucose as the primary energy source. For the average individual (not someone with a decent amount of muscle mass), this diet provides more than enough nutrients to grow and repair and is also used in epilepsy cases since ketosis exerts a very powerful anticonvulsant effect. What happens when you have a good amount of muscle mass? All good So a ketogenic diet for weight loss or a ketogenic diet for bodybuilding should be good right? So far a ketogenic diet seems like it would be fantastic for natural bodybuilders and physique enthusiasts, but we can see how we would burn fat fast, right? The basic thought process behind it is that since a ketogenic diet keeps insulin low, then it must be good. While insulin isn’t Continue reading >>
