Woman Battles Brain Cancer Using Low-carb Ketogenic Diet Without Chemo

Share Share Share Health Impact News Editor Comments Some of the most exciting research to come out in the past few years regarding the high-fat low-carb ketogenic diet has been in the area of cancer treatment. The results are so promising that new “ketone” drugs are in the pipeline. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carb, and moderate-protein diet that was first developed in the 1920s at John Hopkins hospital to treat epilepsy. Some children with seizures saw great success on the diet, often where drugs had failed. Today, the ketogenic diet principles — particularly using coconut oil as the main fat — are being used to treat neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, as well as successfully treating cancer. The primary motivation to develop drugs that mimic the effects of the diet is because it is considered “difficult” to follow the diet. We have a whole generation now that is addicted to processed sugar and carbs, so if one can take a pill instead, that is seen as preferable. (See: Ketone Body Therapy: From ketogenic diet to oral administration of ketone ester.) Sadly, the principles of the ketogenic diet were once common knowledge, as this clip from the popular 1960s Andy Griffith show portrays. Aunt Bee’s apple pie is seen as something to limit or even skip because of the dangerous “carbohydrates and glucose,” while meatloaf was seen as healthier. Excerpts: Alix Hayden has brain cancer, but instead of undergoing surgery and grueling chemotherapy, she’s fighting it with the low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet and has been doing great so far. In an exclusive interview March 14, Hayden discussed her metabolic diet therapy and navigating cancer with a positive attitude. Alix, director of operations at biochemistry research firm Phenomenome Disco Continue reading >>

The Ketogenic Diet: Starve Cancer To Death

The Ketogenic Diet: Starve Cancer To Death

Cancer research has shifted its direction in the last 10 years towards understanding tumor metabolism and therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment. Emerging evidence indicates that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease and not based on mutations as previously thought. In accordance with this theory, Boston College’s Dr. Thomas Seyfried, author of the book, Cancer is a Metabolic Disease, believes cancer can be controlled with metabolic-based approaches. These therapies include cancer signaling, a therapeutic ketogenic diet, and drugs that target cancerous metabolism. The metabolic theory of cancer is not a new idea; it was discovered in the early 1920s by German scientist Otto Warburg. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1931. His theory states that, “The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal cells by a fermentation of sugar.” This fermentation can be seen in PET scans which use radioactive glucose to light up the cancerous areas in patients. It shows what sugar hogs cancer cells are. The metabolic theory further states that cancer originates from damage to the cells’ machinery that make ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is energy that is made in the mitochondria of the cell and is used to power virtually every activity that is necessary for life. Healthy cells have a flexible metabolism — cancer cells do not. This broken energy metabolism is seen in all cancers across the board and the greater the degree of damage, the more aggressive the cancer. Dr. Seyfried believes that the damaged energy metabolism is the primary cause of cancer — genetic mutations are merely a result. When the primary metabolic machinery (mitochondria) of the cell becomes damaged, it cannot produce energy through the normal energy pa Continue reading >>

Can A Ketogenic Diet Cure Cancer?

Can A Ketogenic Diet Cure Cancer?

I’ve recently received a number of queries from patients and practitioners who are curious about a handful of studies and anecdotal reports that indicate a ketogenic diet may help to curtail cancer growth. For those not familiar with the ketogenic diet, it’s a very low carbohydrate diet that contains moderate amounts of protein and a high percentage of fats. I prefer to think of foods in their whole, natural forms (for example, almonds, apples, asparagus, blueberries, oatmeal, olives, potatoes, rye, and salmon) instead of in reductionist terms of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Keeping this in mind, the primary purpose of dietary carbohydrates is for fuel—the body converts carbohydrates via the liver into glucose, which is used for everything from powering muscles to brain function. When confronted with a lack of carbohydrates, the body switches to burning fats for energy by converting fats (again via the liver) into ketone bodies. Here’s why cutting back on carbohydrates appears to curtail cancer growth: Cancer cells primarily use glucose for fuel, but healthy cells primarily use oxygen and secondary glucose, fatty acids, and ketone bodies. The idea behind the ketogenic diet is to starve cancer cells by depriving them of glucose, while continuing to provide healthy cells with ketone bodies for energy. On the surface, the ketogenic diet makes sense. But I don’t recommend it, because although a ketogenic diet may be an improvement over a nutritionally poor diet, it’s not what I consider to be an ideal diet. For one thing, if deprived of glucose, cancer cells can adapt, diversify, and hijack our metabolic system, altering fatty acids and certain amino acids like glutamine for energy production. They can also make glucose through the catabolic breakdown of h Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet And Cancer

Ketogenic Diet And Cancer

Looking for information on a ketogenic diet and cancer? You’ve come to the right place. A recent report from the World Health Organization states that the number of cancer cases worldwide is expected to surge by 57 percent over the next twenty years. For many, this will mean painful, expensive (and potentially deadly) treatments with chemotherapy and radiation. On the other hand, many others will choose a more natural approach to treat and prevent cancer… one that is meant to boost the immune system, curtail the proliferation of cancerous cells, and starve those cells of the very fuel they need to grow. And one of the most effective natural approaches for doing this is the ketogenic diet. It is certainly not the only thing that should be included in a cancer-fighting protocol, but science has proven that it can be a very important part of one. The Ketogenic Diet and Cancer: Natural, Effective “Metabolic Therapy” The ketogenic diet is a very low carb diet that is moderate in protein and high in fat. It is well known that the cells in your body are normally fueled by glucose (the form of sugar present in the blood). But when glucose is not available, cells derive their energy from ketones – a byproduct of fat breakdown. And if you are concerned about cancer this is a very good thing… You see, cancer cells work differently than normal cells. And while they thrive on glucose, they are unable to make the switch to ketones. Without glucose as a source of fuel, cancer cells begin to die off. Over time, tumors shrink and the diagnosis of “cancer” can disappear. Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, metabolic therapy researcher at the University of South Florida says: “Your normal cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies. But Continue reading >>

In today’s interview I get to speak with brain cancer survivor, Alison Gannett, about how she uses a ketogenic diet & other natural remedies to beat a malignant cancer diagnosis. Alison is very passionate about understanding what caused her cancer and how best to treat & manage the type of cancer she was diagnosed with. She is now a ketogenic cancer coach helping others learn how to use a customised ketogenic diet in combination with other advice to help conquer their cancer. We not only talk about how she discovered she had cancer with her symptoms, but also how she survived her emergency brain surgery and why she decided not to use chemo therapy or radiation treatment. If you know someone who is has been diagnosed with cancer and is interested in using a ketogenic diet as part of their treatment plan then this episode is for them! I enjoyed this interview as I have read how useful a ketogenic diet can be in managing cancer and experts like, Dr Thomas Seyfried & Dr Dom D’Agostino, are fans of the keto diet for cancer, but had not had a chance yet to speak to someone who is living proof and implementing the diet on a daily basis. After speaking with Alison I have a better understanding of how to start a keto diet for cancer and what else needs to be considered when treating yourself for cancer. I really hope her positive story can help not only give some hope to others in a similar situation, but assist them to know who to possibly turn to and what is needed. Vegan Ketogenic Diet For Cancer

Vegan Ketogenic Diet For Cancer

What is a vegan ketogenic diet and how can it help people being treated for cancer? Why is this diet so important to help maintain and restore our health? Is the vegan ketogenic diet scientifically proven and could it help people being treated for cancer? We are going to cover all these questions here for you. Individuals will visit us and ask if we have research and proof that what we do at An Oasis of Healing works? Where on the other hand, these individuals will never ask the white coats or doctors at Dana Farber if they have the research and proof that the cancer treatments they are about to receive will work? There is a large amount of scientific proof on whether a vegan ketogenic diet is effective. If you’re interested in the research and scientific proof of how this works, buy the book by Thomas Seyfried Ph.D., “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease”. What is a vegan ketogenic diet? The word keto is derived from ketosis or ketones. People have fatty acids which is used to store energy. When those fatty acids are utilized for energy, they go through a process of being broken down into what’s called ketone bodies. These ketone bodies are ushered into cells and are then broken down further and transformed into fuel for the human body. This process is efficient and works perfectly in the storage of fats for conversion into energy. This process stores double the energy of carbs. When someone fasts they are actually on a ketogenic diet. The reason to be on this diet is to produce ketones. When ketones are produced we are able to get into a metabolic condition which is called ketosis. Water happens to be the best form of a ketogenic diet. However, it’s not great for someone who had cancer because they would become to weak. They need the fat and nutrients that come wit Continue reading >>

The War On Cancer

The War On Cancer

A couple of weeks ago Tim Ferriss and I were having dinner and the topic of cancer came up. As some of you may know my background is in oncology, specifically in exploring immune-based therapies for cancer by exploiting the properties of regulator T-cells. But that was a long time ago. Like many of you, I expect, I’ve also been personally impacted by cancer having lost a friend to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). I often describe GBM to people as one of the cancers that gives cancer a bad name. When I went to medical school I planned on becoming a pediatric oncologist, and though I ultimately chose to pursue surgical oncology, my interest in helping people with cancer never wavered. Over dinner that night, Tim asked me if I could write – in about 1,000 words! – a post on cancer that would be interesting and digestible to a broad audience. “1,000 words?!,” I asked. “How about 30,000 words?,” I responded only half kidding. After explaining why I couldn’t possibly write such an abridged version, Tim talked me into it. And so, I plan to accept the challenge and hope to provide readers with such a post (it will be on Tim’s blog when I do so), hopefully in the next month or two. For an introduction, however, I’d like take a step back and place this topic in a broader context. I don’t need to say much about cancer that you don’t already know. You probably know that about one in three Americans will develop cancer in their lifetime, and you probably know that about half of them will succumb to the disease. What you may not know, however, is that we have made virtually no progress in extending survival for patients with metastatic solid organ tumors since the “War on Cancer” was declared over 40 years ago. In other words, when a solid organ tumor (e.g., Continue reading >>

Starving Cancer: Ketogenic Diet A Key To Recovery

Starving Cancer: Ketogenic Diet A Key To Recovery

Many people are frustrated with today's cancer treatments. They are expensive, painful and often just don't work. However, there is a new cancer treatment that is free, has virtually no side effects, and can be used in conjunction with other cancer treatments. It involves cutting out carbohydrates, beginning with the worst carb of all - sugar. Killing Cancer Dr. Fred Hatfield is an impressive guy: a power-lifting champion, author of dozens of books, a millionaire businessman with a beautiful wife. But he'll tell you his greatest accomplishment is killing his cancer just in the nick of time. "The doctors gave me three months to live because of widespread metastatic cancer in my skeletal structure," he recalled. "Three months, three different doctors told me that same thing." His wife Gloria remembers it well. "It's a horrible, horrible feeling to have someone tell you that the person you love only has three months to live and you're not going to be with him any more," she said. While Hatfield was preparing to die, he heard about an anti-cancer diet, also known as metabolic therapy. With nothing to lose, he gave it a try and was shocked when it actually worked. "The cancer was gone!" he exclaimed. "Completely. To this day there's no trace of it. And it's been over a year." Starving Bad Cells Although it wasn't easy, Hatfield stopped eating carbohydrates, which turn into glucose inside your body. Cancer cells love glucose and need it so badly, that if you stop giving it to them, they die. "It just absolutely amazes me that medical science is just now finding this out," he said. Hatfield's cancer recovery, however, was not a surprise to Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, who researches metabolic therapy. When he and his team of scientists at the University of South Florida removed car Continue reading >>

Dr. Gonzalez Dismantles The Ketogenic Diet For Cancer [13 Mins.]

Dr. Gonzalez Dismantles The Ketogenic Diet For Cancer [13 Mins.]

In early 2012, I started to see some chatter online about the ketogenic diet as a potential anti-cancer diet. I’ve understood for many years that different diets work for different people, and I was intrigued by the ketogenic diet for cancer. Could this be another possible dietary strategy to heal cancer? So naturally I shared information about it on this site, thinking it might be a viable option for some. At that time there were no other sites (at least none as large as this one) talking about the ketogenic diet and how it may help cancer patients. In 2013, awareness of the keto diet exploded. This was mostly due to Dr. Mercola’s articles, interviews, and endorsement. Since then, many others have jumped on the bandwagon. And at first glance, there is a compelling hypothesis which presents the ketogenic diet as a method to starve cancer cells of their primary fuel, glucose, thus killing the cancer. Despite the zealous promoters of it, some of whom I have great respect for, my opinion of the ketogenic diet has changed. What caused my change of heart in promoting the ketogenic diet for cancer patients? It started with several long phone conversations and email exchanges I had with cancer healing expert friend who was adamant that the ketogenic diet did not work in healing cancer long term. This coincided with the recurrence of cancer in someone I knew who was promoting the ketogenic diet (as effective). It appeared to have some positive short term results for some people (shrinking or slowing down tumors), but I was beginning to have some doubts about it working long term. This uneasiness persisted for many months and I could not shake it. So I finally made the decision to take down my very popular post and youtube video about it. Then came the coup de grace from Dr. Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet And Cancer

Ketogenic Diet And Cancer

What is the relationship between a ketogenic diet and cancer? There is a definite relationship between a ketogenic diet and cancer. However, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to what the diet actually is so we will bring some clarity to this. Let’s start with what a ketogenic diet should not include when it comes to cancer; animal meat including steak, chicken and the like. A person doesn’t heal from cancer eating animal products. A pure ketogenic diet that helps a person heal from cancer has to have the foundation in fat intake. To be more specific, a person needs sixty to seventy percent of their diet coming from fat. And, let’s be clear on this point, this diet has nothing to do with the Atkins diet, they’re nothing alike. A person can’t eat cheese burgers and bacon with sausage omelets with a side of ham and expect to live a long, vibrant, healthy life. Achieving a vegan diet that is 60-70% from fat doesn’t happen overnight. However, we can shorten the length of time it takes in getting to this level. How do we do this? Well, we do this as a result of having developed many meals and recipes that fall within this given range. Our keto meals are vegan and raw and contain 60-70% fat. It’s impossible to do this randomly. Putting something like this together comes from experience and expertise in this field and literally takes years to arrive at where we are with our program. The people who visit us at An Oasis of Healing are show and taught this so they can bring this lifestyle home with them. In order for this keto diet to work, a person must be able to check their ketone levels. It is critical for you to know how to check your levels? When your sugar levels drop and become too low, you can manufacture too many ketones at once and it becomes Continue reading >>

Healing Brain Cancer With A Zero Carb Ketogenic Diet By Andrew Scarborough

Healing Brain Cancer With A Zero Carb Ketogenic Diet By Andrew Scarborough

Two and a half years ago, at the age of 27, I was working as a personal trainer and was physically very active. However, I was forced to stop working towards the end of 2012 because I was experiencing debilitating fatigue and severe migraine headaches. The doctors I consulted told me that my symptoms were most likely due to excessive stress. At that time, I was eating a high carbohydrate, high protein, low fat diet, and I had a very low percentage of body fat. I ran and lifted weights, and for all intents and purposes appeared to be in great shape. I felt like I was doing everything right for good health based on what I had studied while working on my undergraduate degree in Sports Nutrition a few years earlier. But looking back, I probably wasn’t all that healthy internally. After quitting my job, I decided to study for a Master’s degree in Nutritional Therapy. As I got deeper into my course work,I was shocked to discover that everything I had learned during my undergraduate studies was either false, misleading, or outdated information. However, the new information was fascinating and I was enjoying it. This is where I first learned about the Ketogenic diet to manage drug resistant epilepsy and potentially cancer. My lecturer at the time told me that she followed a Paleo diet and I was intrigued and a little skeptical at the same time. Five months later in February 2013, following a workout at the gym, I had what I now know was a partial seizure. I became very confused, had a metallic taste on my tongue, was very unsteady, stared blankly into space, and lost the ability to speak. It was scary and confusing, but – as my speech came back a few minutes later – I ignored it and carried on with my day. There was also a particularly nasty strain of flu going around a Continue reading >>

Fighting Cancer By Putting Tumor Cells On A Diet

Fighting Cancer By Putting Tumor Cells On A Diet

Cancer dogma holds that most malignancies are caused by DNA mutations inside the nuclei of cells, mutations that ultimately lead to runaway cellular proliferation. Given the countless genetic blips that have been associated with various cancers, the illness has actually come to be seen as a complex of diseases for which personalized treatments might offer the best chances of success. But prevailing oncology orthodoxy has its detractors, and some cancer biologists feel that while mutations are nearly ubiquitous in cancer, they may not always be the driving force for disease. Cancer, they suggest, might actually be as much a disorder of altered energy production as it is genetic damage. This idea traces back to the work of German physician Otto Warburg who, in the 1920s, reported that rather than generating energy using the oxygen-based process of respiration as healthy cells do, cancer cells prefer the anaerobic, or oxygen-free, process of fermentation. Not all products of fermentation are as welcome as beer, wine and cheese. Boston College biology professor Dr. Thomas Seyfried is a leading proponent of the metabolic theory of cancer. He proselytizes Warburg's findings and in 2012 published an academic book called Cancer as a Metabolic Disease that lays out the evidence behind his beliefs (Currently the book's Facebook page has over 6,000 followers and a lively exchange of self-help tips). Seyfried argues that decades of research, including his own, support the idea that aberrant metabolism can somehow induce malignancy. Further, he believes that research supports at the idea that limiting the fuels available for fermentation — that is, the sugar glucose and the amino acid glutamine — is an overlooked approach to aid treatment. He specifically implicates mitochondria Continue reading >>
