Answered by: Dr Sujeet Jha | Director, Institute of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Max Healthcare, New Delhi Q: I am 37 years old, weighing 69 Kg with a height of 176 cm. In the past six months I have lost 6 Kgs. During 3 routine fasting blood sugar tests, my sugar levels have been 160, 183, 223 respectively and I have seen that my sugar levels are increasing. My father, who is about 65 years of age, also experienced weight loss and when investigated he was found to have high blood sugar levels. Subsequently, he took ayurvedic medicine and his blood sugar levels have become normal now. I am doing exercises & diet control now. Slip off your diebetic diet and you'll lose weight. The diet recommended by the American Diabetes Association is exactly what you should eat if you WANT to be overweight.
Here is a diabetic's blood sugar on the ADA diet:
Here is blood sugar on a traditional human diet:
Sugar makes you fat (and diabetic). So if you want to moderate your insulin levels for health, longevity and body composition, keep your carbs between 50 and 100g per day (stay closer to 50 for weight loss). Avoid sugar in all forms, especially straight up added sugar and refined carbohydrates: bread, cereal, pasta, processed food. Removing those Big 4 will in most cases put you where you in that 50-100 zone.
It will take your body a few weeks to adjust to burning fat for fuel rather than sugar but stick with it. Exercise and stress management are also critical - stress raises your blood sugar and exercise creates space for sugar to be stored in the muscles. So now you're attacking both weight loss and diabetes from three fronts: diet, exercise and stress management.
