Can Metformin Help Women With Pcos?

Home / Fertility / Boosting Fertility We asked doctors whether the drug Metformin really helps women with PCOS conceive, reduce miscarriage risk and increase milk supply. Here's what they say. If you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you're not alone. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information , this hormonal disorder affects between 5 percent and 15 percent of women of reproductive age in this country. In polycystic ovary syndrome, cysts develop on the ovaries, and the body produces excess hormones called androgens, which cause an irregular menstrual cycle. As a result, ovulation can be unpredictable, and getting pregnant can be challenging. "Since puberty, I've averaged one menstrual cycle per year," says Carrie, a mother from the Midwest who has PCOS. "I always wondered if I could have children." Carrie tried getting pregnant for several months, but wasn't able to because she wasn't ovulating. After evaluating her bloodwork, her OB/GYN suggested she go on either Clomid or Metformin to help balance her hormones to promote ovulation. "Because I had a very slight imbalance in my hormones, my doctor suggested trying Metformin before going straight to Clomid. Since I heard horror stories about Clomid causing multiples, I was happy to try Metformin first," Carrie says. Metformin is a diabetes medication that is sometimes used to regulate hormones in women with PCOS by balancing their insulin level. This effect leads to more regular menstruation and ovulation cycles , according to WebMD . Carrie got pregnant the first month she took Metformin. But not all women with polycystic ovary syndrome have such good results. In fact, experts say more evidence is needed to prove that Metformin helps conception in PCOS patients . "When putting all the data tog Continue reading >>

Effects Of Metformin Use In Pregnant Patients With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Go to: REVIEW OF LITERATURE In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind study, done on 257 pregnant women with PCOS, aged 18 - 42 years, who either received metformin or placebo from first trimester to delivery, failed to demonstrate any reduction of pregnancy-related complications, such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and pre-term delivery in the metformin group.[7] On the contrary, a prospective study done on 98 pregnant women with PCOS who received metformin (1700 – 3000 mg/day) before conception and up to 37 weeks of pregnancy vs. 110 normal pregnant controls, showed a significant reduction of pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension but an insignificant decrease in pre-eclampsia incidence with comparable mean neonatal Apgar scores, weight and length between the 2 groups.[8] Metformin has been shown to have encouraging effects on several metabolic aspects of polycystic ovarian syndrome, such as insulin sensitivity, plasma glucose concentration, and lipid profile and since women with PCOS are more likely than healthy women to suffer from pregnancy-related problems like early pregnancy loss, gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive states in pregnancy, the use of metformin therapy in these patients throughout pregnancy may have beneficial effects on early pregnancy loss and development of gestational diabetes. However, there is little evidence of its beneficial effect on hypertensive complications in pregnancy.[9] In a 3-year case controlled study, conducted on 197 pregnant women with PCOS (confirmed by Rotterdam criteria), in which cases comprised of women who continued metformin throughout pregnancy while controls were women who stopped metformin after the first trimester, it was concluded that in compar Continue reading >>

Metformin is used to treat patients who suffer from PCOS. Find out how Metformin can aid in conception by helping to regulate your ovulation and menstrual cycles. You might already know Metformin as Glucophage, a brand name drug used to treat patients who suffer from type 2 diabetes. However, what you might not know is that Metformin is also used as one of the most effective fertility drugs for women who are suffering from PCOS conceive more easily. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here Even for women who are not diabetic, Metformin can help lower insulin levels in order to regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle. It is common knowledge that PCOS can cause an excessive amount of androgens, or male hormones, in the body. Metformin is able to help lower that level of male hormones and help resume normal ovulation cycles as well as menstrual cycles in women who have PCOS. Metformin is usually used as a second round of treatment if the first round treatment options (usually Clomid) prove to be unsuccessful in helping to resume ovulation. Metformin has been proven not only to be a very popular, safe and effective drug for treating patients with diabetes, but also for women who have a problem keeping their insulin and blood sugar levels in check due to their PCOS as well. Metformin has also been proven to help women who are overweight as well as women who have normal body mass index levels. It seems that when Metformin is used, almost everyone can benefit from it. What Metformin does is to help balance insulin levels in the body. Since women with PCOS often have elevated insulin levels, Metformin can help to bring those levels back down to a normal level. Once the insulin levels are back down to normal, the male hormones (also known as androgens) also go back down to Continue reading >>

How Long Does It Take For Metformin To Work For Conception?

How Long Does It Take For Metformin To Work For Conception?

Metformin, also known as Glucophage, is a medication that is used to regulate the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Metformin accomplishes its task through three methods. First, it causes the liver to produce less glucose. Second, metformin helps your stomach to absorb less glucose from the food that you eat. Finally, metformin improves the efficiency of the insulin that the body produces, which reduces the amount of glucose that is in your blood. Metformin is often prescribed for people with Type II diabetes. How long it takes Metformin to work depends on the reason that a woman is taking metformin. If a woman is taking metformin to regulate her blood sugar, metformin typically will work within a few days or a few weeks at the most. For the woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) metformin can help to reduce the amount of insulin in the body. Once the insulin levels are under control, many women will then experience improved ovulation. If metformin is going to work for a woman who has experienced fertility problems because of her polycystic ovarian syndrome, it will typically help within three to six months. Unlike most fertility treatments, metformin does not cause a risk of having a multiple or twin pregnancy. If metformin alone does not help a woman with PCOS who is trying to conceive, a fertility doctor may prescribe Clomid, as well. If metformin is prescribed for a woman with PCOS to help restore a regular, normal menstrual cycle, metformin can work within 4 to 8 weeks. In addition, the stabilized levels of insulin may affect the other hormones in a woman’s body, and reduce other symptoms of PCOS. Some women, either with diabetes or PCOS, use metformin as a tool for weight loss. If this is the case, weight loss can occur somewhere between 1 and 5 wee Continue reading >>

1. Are you trying to get pregnant naturally? See, can you get pregnant naturally with PCOS? 2. Are you undergoing fertility treatment? Different treatments have different success rates. 3. How old are you? See, what age does fertility go down in women? The majority of healthy couples trying for a baby become pregnant within the first 3 months. If you have PCOS chances are it will take at least 6 months longer again, although you can significantly increase your chance of success by losing weight (if you are overweight) and following a healthy eating plan. If you have not conceived after one year of trying (or within 6 months if you are aged over 30), you should talk to your doctor. He can take a sample of your blood and send it to a lab for fertility testing (hormone levels will be checked); or he will refer you to a fertility clinic for more specialist care. At this point, you will probably be recommended fertility treatment. There are different levels of treatment - at entry level, fertility drugs to induce ovulation are likely to be tried first and if these don't work you can progress to more invasive (and expensive!) methods like IVF treatment. If you are older (approaching 40) and time is a factor then it may be wise to go straight to IVF because it has the highest success rate for older couples. These are the most common fertility treatments used for women with PCOS, and their pregnancy success rates: Fertility Drugs: The fertility medication clomiphene citrate (usually Clomid) returns ovulation in nearly 85 percent of women with PCOS and has a pregnancy rate of nearly 40 percent. Obese women tend to be less responsive to clomiphene, so losing weight is still an important necessity for fertility. Gonadotropin/GnRH Injections: Starting with a low daily dose of FSH Continue reading >>

Does Metformin Make You More Fertile?

Does Metformin Make You More Fertile?

It's an increasingly common phenomenon: A drug that was originally synthesized for a specific purpose turns out to be effective in combating another problem. Examples include Viagra (an unsuccessful treatment for angina that succeeded as an erectile dysfunction drug) and Thalidomide, a disastrously ineffective medication for pregnancy-induced nausea that has been proven to fight bone marrow cancer [source: Brown]. Metformin can also be included in this list, but with one significant difference. Not only is it helpful in a secondary role, but it's wildly popular in treating the condition for which it was initially intended. Metformin was developed in the 1950s as a treatment for diabetes [source: Diabetes Forecast]. Today it's the most popular drug on the market for people with Type 2 diabetes [source: Science Daily]. But by 2004, Metformin was receiving international acknowledgement as a worthwhile option for patients seeking a remedy for their infertility. The U.K.'s National Collaborating Centre for Women and Children's Health noted that the drug, when used in conjunction with other medications, improved the rate of pregnancy in women with specific infertility issues tied to ovaries containing multiple cysts [source: NCCWCH]. The common denominator between Type 2 diabetes, Metformin and infertility can be described in one word: insulin. Insulin carries blood sugar to the body's cells to create energy. Some people's bodies, however, produce too little insulin, or the cells in the body refuse to accept the sugar it's transporting [source: American Diabetes Association]. That can lead to a multitude of health issues. Women whose infertility is tied to polycystic (multiple cysts) ovarian syndrome often have issues with insulin resistance. That's where Metformin comes in. Continue reading >>

How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant With Metformin For Pcos Woman?

How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant With Metformin For Pcos Woman?

Metformin is a multiplier. It can treat insulin resistance, if you have it, and help you lose weight. (In my case, mostly by making me too nauseous to eat.) Both things can make you slightly more likely to ovulate. It also decreases your risk of developing diabetes in the future. However, metformin alone isn't a fertility treatment. It is usually combined with other drugs, like Clomid, Femera, or injectable medications, to stimulate ovulation. Your doctors may try you on metformin alone for a short period of time, usually 3 months or less. If you don't become pregnant after that, they'll usually start the other medications. The bad news is that no one can predict exactly how long it will take you to get pregnant. This is one of the worst parts of infertility. I have been through it. The intense frustration of not knowing how long I would have to keep trying drove me nuts. The good news is that PCOS is very treatable. If your doctors are willing to start with just metformin, then your case is probably also fairly mild. For younger women with PCOS, success rates are very high. Hang in there! And yes, metformin is terrible. You aren't imagining how bad you feel. The side effects will probably let up shortly. If you feel really exhausted, ask your doctor about adding a B12 supplement to your diet. Metformin causes a B12 deficiency in about 30% of patients[1], which can make you feel tired. Metformin And Pregnancy: Is This Drug Safe?

Metformin And Pregnancy: Is This Drug Safe?

Whether you're expecting your first child or expanding your family, a safe and healthy pregnancy is crucial. This is why you take precautions before and during pregnancy to keep your unborn child healthy and reduce the risk of birth defects. In every pregnancy, there’s a 3 to 5 percent risk of having a baby with a birth defect, according to the Organization of Teratology Information Specialist (OTIS). Some birth defects can’t be prevented. But you can lower your child’s risk by taking prenatal vitamins, maintaining a healthy weight, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your doctor might recommend that you don’t take certain medications while pregnant. This is because certain medications can cause birth defects. If you're taking the prescription drug metformin, you might have concerns about how the drug will affect your pregnancy and the health of your unborn child. What Is Metformin? Metformin is an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Type 2 diabetes is a condition that increases blood sugar levels. PCOS is an endocrine disorder that occurs in women of reproductive age. It’s important to maintain a healthy blood sugar level while pregnant. This is one way to reduce the risk of birth defects and complications. Although metformin can control blood sugar, you may question whether this drug is safe to take during pregnancy. Pcos Experiences Please, How Long After Your Miscarriage Did You Ovulate/get Pregnant Again?

Pcos Experiences Please, How Long After Your Miscarriage Did You Ovulate/get Pregnant Again?

I miscarried my first pregnancy last night at 7 weeks, and am wondering now when I'll start ovulating again and how long it's likely to take me to get pregnant. We weren't even expecting to get pregnant without Clomid because I don't ovulate every cycle, and I tend to ovulate late when I do. This time just happened to O at CD18. Any PCOS obsessive charters out there know when they next ovulated after a MC? Anyone without PCOS welcome to answer too, I just don't even know what to expect. I think I'll probably just keep taking my temp because I've been taking it for 3 friggin' years and I'm programmed to stick a thermometer in my mouth and lie still every morning, even with a bursting bladder. And on the MC topic, anyone get terrible fartiness? I am a human gas factory at the moment! I'm so sorry for your loss, I miscarried at the weekend so I know how you feel. I think the wind pops are partly because your womb is contracting and it's connected down there but I might be totally wrong. This was my second miscarrage so I can tell you about my first. I had a normal cycle 5 weeks after my miscarrage and conceived 2 months after that. I think the best news is that your body is more fertile after a pregnancy, no matter how sadly short it was. Sarah76, I am so sorry to hear what has happened to you. I thought you might want to hear my story. As you know, I have PCOS too. It took me 3 years to conceive DS, and I was pretty obsessive about charting etc. However, after lots of investigations and procedures I had something called ovarian drilling, which is basically what it sounds like! Following that procedure I developed an infection and was forced to spend 3 weeks off sick from work. Having spent the month before the procedure actively avoiding pregnancy, it was a relief to flo Continue reading >>

Pcos Graduates- How Long Did It Take You To Conceive?

Pcos Graduates- How Long Did It Take You To Conceive?

I had suggestive PCOS (diagnosed from a scan when I was 21 after 10 years of very irregular periods). It took us 2 yrs to conceive DD naturally - fell pg after initial fertility tests and had to cancel 1st fertility clinic appointment as pg when it came through. With 2nd, we tried for 9 mths before pg, but had missed mc at 10 wks back in Feb. Still no joy since then, but dh has been away for past 9 weeks, so that hasn't helped! When I had my scan before my 2nd ERCP after mc, I asked the sonographer what my ovaries looked like and she said they were clear, so here's hoping my PCOS has been cleared by the pg hormones. GP has agreed to refer us though to the fertility clinic when DH gets back just to discuss our options. I've considered metformin, but don't know much about it. And if my PCOS has cleared up, it probably wouldn't help me. But a colleague at work has just given birth to her 2nd child following treatment with metformin. Attilathemeercat knows much more about PCOS, so she may pop by and give better advice than me! I have pcos, only just found out. I wanted to know is it worth using things such as persona or shop bought fertility tests to see if I am ovulating? Or would they be a waste of money? Sorry for butting in, but i will be watching this thread with interest. Incidentally I have just lost a stone in weight and this month my cycle isnt so long as usual. Could weight loss have an effect that quickly? ATM- I am 98% sure I have ovulated every month so far. I used to chart a lot and now that I know my body pretty well, I take my temp when I think I have O'd and it definitely goes up. My charts look perfectly normal except for the fact that I don't O til day 21 or 22ish. I am having progestorone checked this cycle. In the past it has been fine and confirmed ov Continue reading >>

How Many Cycles Of Femara Did It Take You To Get Pregnant?

How Many Cycles Of Femara Did It Take You To Get Pregnant?

How many cycles of Femara did it take you to get pregnant? I'm 35 yrs old, and have been trying to conceive for 4 years, although we weren't obsessing about it. I don't get my periods regularly, so it's hard to plan, I can go months without a period and then be regular for a few months with long cycles (average 36 days when "regular"). We got pregnant 1 1/2 yr ago but the embryo stopped developing and I had a miscarriage following that. We started doingfertilitytreatments this September, was diagnosed with PCOS. (My boyfriend was told he has super soldiers so we're not worried about him!)We did a couple of cycles of Provera to start period, then took Femara for 5 days and had to take it for another 5 days because eggs were not maturing enough, and then when one was finally developed enough, took the Ovidrel shot. That was 14 days ago and now I got my period :( So I'm wondering if many of you have had luck with Femara/Ovidrel and how many cycles it has taken other women to get pregnant when using Femara/Ovidrel? I feel really sad that it didn't work andI find thatit's hard sometimes to keep the faith :( Continue reading >>
