Must you take Metformin WITH your food, or within a couple of hours?

I am taking Metformin Hcl ER Tabs 500mg. The label says to take two tablets daily with dinner.
I am wondering, to lower my numbers, must I take the Metformin with my food? I ask, because I usually take it with my vitamins in the morning, and I may eat breakfast a half hour before or after that. Then in the evening I may take my Metformin about a hour after finishing dinner. So, am I diminishing the effect? I take one in the morning and one in the evening thinking that if I spread it out, it will be more effective? Or should I do as the label says and take them both at dinner? Also, I tend to have a wine or two at dinner and I know it is suggested against having alcohol, so that's another reason I switched one tablet to the morning.
    Thanks for your advice,
    Nick

I take mine at 6:24PM everyday, usually before dinner. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference to my body whether I take it before, during or after I eat.
I figure dinner will be the biggest meal I eat all day so I set that daily alarm to remind me to take it. Seems to work well, but I know some people need to take it after they eat because they get an upset stomach from the Metformin.

Hi Chicagoman, your doctor wants you to take your Metformin with dinner to lower your fasting number. It only works if you stick to your carb count.
