A diabetes diet should not make long term diabetic complications more likely, but that's what the American Diabetes Association is still recommending. The 2018 ADA guidelines tell people with diabetes to limit fat and keep protein at about 25% of total calories. That leaves 45-65% of total daily calories from carbohydrates. ( See this document ). Based on a daily calorie intake of 2000 calories, that works out to 225-325 grams of carbohydrate per day. Type 2 diabetes is basically a disease of carbohydrate intolerance, so this advice doesn't make sense. Eating large amounts of carbohydrate causes blood sugar to spike, which the requires a large amount of insulin to bring it down. The result is that blood sugar crashes. We call this the blood sugar roller coaster. More medication and more insulin is needed to control those roller coaster highs and this increases the cost of diabetic care.The logical solution is to get off the blood sugar roller coaster completely. Just over four years ago, my GP gave me unwelcome news: I had type 2 diabetes. I was shocked. I didn’t match the stereotypical patient profile of an overweight couch potato. Aged 59, I was thin, fit and 5ft 7in tall, drank frugally, went running every week and weighed just 10st 7lb. The outlook was not good, with the risk of heart attacks, strokes, blindness, amputations and a 36% greater chance of dying early. I thought, this can’t be happening to me; there has to be a way through. I started trawling the web for information and unearthed a report about a research trial at Newcastle University, led by Professor Roy Taylor. The results suggested you could reverse type 2 with a daily 800-calorie diet for eight weeks, depending on how quickly and how much weight you need to lose. Taylor’s team discovered that type 2 is caused by fat clogging up the pancreas, preventing it from producing sufficient insulin to control blood sugar level. They calculated you need to reduce your pre-diagnosis body weight by a sixth to starve your body into using up the rogue fat lodged in your pancreas and allow it to function normally. “The body does not like any fat lying around in the pancreas, so it consumes that first,” says Taylor. Today is ‘Read A Book' day! I love a good old fashioned paper book. Sure, I love eBooks too, but there's nothing quite like the smell of a brand new book. I also love to write notes in the margins, use highlighters to highlight things that really stand out to me, ear mark the pages, or use a favorite bookmark. I guess I love it because of his approach to diet, it really aligns with how I view things. Dr Mark Hyman is a medical doctor but he also practices ‘functional medicine', which is much more open minded than traditional medical practice, and takes the ‘function' of the body into account. The basic philosophy is that if you get the body to function properly, then your disease disappears, which totally makes sense to me. The Blood Sugar Solution is based on a whole foods diet plan, similar to the one we promote here at Diabetes Meal Plans, and it covers things like metabolism, detoxification, inflammation, and various aspects of nutrition. The book outlines a self-based plan that you can put together to help overcome your diabetes struggles.
