Comparative Study Of The Effects Of A 1-year Dietary Intervention Of A Low-carbohydrate Diet Versus A Low-fat Diet On Weight And Glycemic Control In Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of a 1-year intervention with a low-carbohydrate and a low-fat diet on weight loss and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This study is a randomized clinical trial of 105 overweight adults with type 2 diabetes. Primary outcomes were weight and A1C. Secondary outcomes included blood pressure and lipids. Outcome measures were obtained at 3, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS The greatest reduction in weight and A1C occurred within the first 3 months. Weight loss occurred faster in the low-carbohydrate group than in the low-fat group (P = 0.005), but at 1 year a similar 3.4% weight reduction was seen in both dietary groups. There was no significant change in A1C in either group at 1 year. There was no change in blood pressure, but a greater increase in HDL was observed in the low-carbohydrate group (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Among patients with type 2 diabetes, after 1 year a low-carbohydrate diet had effects on weight and A1C similar to those seen with a low-fat diet. There was no significant effect on blood pressure, but the low-carbohydrate diet produced a greater increase in HDL cholesterol. Type 2 diabetes affects >20 million people in the U.S. (1). Optimal weight loss strategies in patients with type 2 diabetes continue to be debated, and the best dietary strategy to achieve both weight loss and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes is unclear. Prior studies, done primarily in patients without diabetes, demonstrated weight loss outcomes with low-carbohydrate diets comparable to that with other diets (2–6). Based on the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets for weight loss, recent guidelines from the American Diabetes Association state that for short-term weight loss either a low-carbohydrate or low-f Continue reading >>

Fourteen years after his own diagnosis of T1D, he adopted the ketogenic diet and now enjoys an average blood glucose of 95 mg/dl and almost total freedom from the symptoms of hypoglycemia. He documents his results on his blog at ketogenicdiabeticathlete.wordpress.com. Ellen Davis, MS, is an expert on ketogenic nutrition and is an accomplished author and alternative-health advocate. Her website, Ketogenic Diet Resource, offers information and books on how to treat diabetes, cancer and other diseases with a ketogenic diet. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much sugar in the bloodstream. Over time, high blood sugar can cause diabetic complications such as nerve pain, kidney damage and blindness. In part, elevated blood sugar comes from eating an excess of carbohydrates (sweet and starchy foods) at every meal. In Continue reading >>

The Ketogenic Diet And My Type 2 Diabetes
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in October 2008. This morning and yesterday morning my fasting blood sugar was 86. That is a non-diabetic fasting blood sugar. If you have Type 2 Diabetes, the likely answer to curing/controlling it is a high fat, low carb, ketogenic diet and lifestyle. I consider myself cured, but I know there are people out there who don’t like me saying that. To them I say, “Too bad.” My doctor told me that in my current state there is no way, no how that I would be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, so therefore I consider that cured. I began this way of life on March 3, 2014 and by early May 2014 I was off the diabetes medication I was taking, which was 1000 mg of Metformin per day. Initially, upon going off the meds, my blood sugars went up a little for about a week, but then gradually came back down when my body realized it could do the job it needed to do. I have been off the meds for 13 months. I do not poison my body or feed that disease with the food I eat. I eat real food. I eat food that has ingredients I can pronounce. I don’t eat processed food (the packaged high carb sugar laden “food”). I don’t eat artificial sweeteners anymore (although there may be an exception from time to time in a low carb baked good). I don’t eat Atkins bars/Quest bars or shakes anymore. I stick with eggs, bacon, meat, veggies, cheese (I have cut back on that too), nuts and berries very sparingly. I put butter and good oils on my food. I use salt. Let’s take a look at what the ADA says I should eat: Whole grain breads, such as whole wheat or rye whole grain Cereal Oatmeal Grits, hominy or cream of wheat Rice Pasta Tortillas Cooked beans and peas Potatoes Corn Sweet potatoes Winter squash Low-fat crackers Low-fat snack chips Low-fat pretzels Light Continue reading >>

Ketogenic Diet For Optimal Health
Nutritional ketosis, which involves eating a high-quality, high-fat diet that is low in net carbs, may be one of the most useful interventions for many chronic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes The key to success on a high-fat diet is to eat high-quality healthy fats, not the fats most commonly found in the American diet (the processed fats and vegetable oils used in processed foods and fried restaurant meals) A way to ease into a ketogenic diet is to begin with a 1-to-1 ratio of healthy fats to net carbs plus protein. This means your grams of healthy fats will be about equal to your combined grams of non-fiber carbs and protein put together By Dr. Mercola There's emerging scientific evidence that a high-fat, low-net carb and moderate protein diet is an ideal diet for most people. However, compliance tends to be low for a number of reasons. Discussing this is Randy Evans, who has a master's degree in nutrition and works with Dr. Jeanne Drisko at the University of Kansas Integrative Medical Center. I recently interviewed Drisko on her clinical use of nutritional ketosis. Evans grew up on a dairy farm in Southern Iowa at a time when agriculture was largely still organic. "I actually grew up eating mostly real whole foods," he says, noting his interest in nutrition was an outgrowth of his upbringing. His interest in the ketogenic diet emerged when he began working with Drisko five years ago. "Our goal with most patients is to push back on those low-fat guidelines we got in the '80s … and to encourage people to incorporate healthy fats in every meal … We're really just getting carbs from Mother Nature here," he says. Getting Started on a Ketogenic Diet The nutrient ratio Drisko and Evans typically recommend for their new patients is a 1-to-1 ratio of healt Continue reading >>

Dr. Roy Taylor On The Cause Of Type 2 Diabetes And What To Do About It
According to Roy Taylor, M.D., “type 2 diabetes is a potentially reversible metabolic state precipitated by the single cause of chronic excess intraorgan fat.” The organs accumulating fat are the pancreas and liver. He is certain “…that the disease process can be halted with restoration of normal carbohydrate and fat metabolism.” I read Taylor’s article published last year in Diabetes Care. (Do you remember that report in 2011 touting cure of T2 diabetes with a very low calorie diet? Taylor was the leader. The study involved only 11 patients, eating 600 calories a day for eight weeks.) Dr. Taylor says that severe calorie restriction is similar to the effect of bariatric surgery in curing or controlling diabetes. Within a week of either intervention, liver fat content is greatly reduced, liver insulin sensitivity returns, and fasting blood sugar levels can return to normal. During the first eight weeks after intervention, pancreatic fat content falls, with associated steadily increasing rates of insulin secretion by the pancreas beta cells. Taylor’s ideas, by the way, dovetail with Roger Unger’s 2008 lipocentric theory of diabetes. Click for more ideas on the cause of T2 diabetes. Here are some scattered points from Taylors article. He backs up most of them with references: In T2 diabetes, improvement in fasting blood sugar reflects improved liver insulin sensitivity more than muscle insulin sensitivity. The more fat accumulation in the liver, the less it is sensitive to insulin. If a T2 is treated with insulin, the required insulin dose is positively linked to how much fat is in the liver. In a T2 who starts insulin injections, liver fat stores tend to decrease. That’s because of suppression of the body’s own insulin delivery from the pancreas to the Continue reading >>

Download Link : Conquer-Type-Diabetes-Ketogenic-Diet.audiobook Book overview : Type 2 diabetes is a modern disease of carbohydrate intolerance, meaning your body isnt able to process carbohydrate (sugars and starches) normally. Consuming these foods results in high blood sugar, and over time, diabetic complications. Before the invention of insulin in the 1920s, physicians advised diabetics to avoid eating carbohydrates because of this intolerance. In contrast, modern advice is to eat carbohydrates and treat the resulting high blood sugar with medications and insulin. This eat carb and take medicine method increases the cost of diabetic care and does nothing to resolve the underlying disease and progression. The logical solution is to follow a low-carb ketogenic diet because it treats type 2 diabetes at the root cause. Avoiding carbs while enjoying foods rich in healthy fats and protein stabilizes blood sugar and reduces and in some cases, eliminates the need for diabetic medications. Conquer Type 2 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet has all the information you need to successfully take control of your diabetes. In addition to clear explanations of the science, this book includes personal success stories, information on blood sugar monitoring and insulin therapy, the foods to eat and to avoid, cooking tips, how to get started and personalize the diet, medication interactions and more. Episode 10 - Medical uses of ketogenic and low carb diets with Ellen Davis Short summary: With guest Ellen Davis we discuss the many medical applications of ketogenic and low carb diets, all of which is explored in depth in her 3 books Fighting Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet , The Ketogenic Diet for Type 1 Diabetes and Conquering Type 2 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet . Ellens books Fighting Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet, The Ketogenic Diet for Type 1 Diabetes and Conquering Type 2 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet Who should NOT follow a ketogenic diet [or fast]? o People with conditions relating to inborn errors in the enzymes involved in lipid metabolism: from mitochondrial membrane long-chain fatty acids transport mechanism to beta-oxidation and Krebs cycle could be potentially fatal during fasting or KDs (Paoli et al. 2014) o E.g.: porphyrias, primary carnitine deficiency, -oxidation defects o Caution: active gall bladder disease, impaired fat digestion, pregnancy and lactation o As George Henderson says (2015) a person with one of these [fatty acid oxidation or ketogenesis] disorders will have impaired metabolism of fatty acids when fasting, and will not produce ketones. Unless the condition is one treatable with L-carnitine, they may require a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet [] The most frequently occurring mitochondrial respiratory disorders impair glucose, rather than fatty acid oxidation and are identified as indications for ketogenic diets Ketogenic and low carb diets are a powerful blood sugar and insulin normalizing therapy that is well suited for diabetes, both type 1 and type 2 Ketogenic and low carb diets are also particularly interesting for treating cancer given the metabolic weak-spots that can be exploited in cancer cells Epilepsy, Azheimers, MS (multiple Continue reading >>

Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Padova, Padova 35131, Italy Received: 24 December 2013 / Revised: 29 January 2014 / Accepted: 7 February 2014 / Published: 19 February 2014 Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions and is a strong risk factor for a number of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and also certain types of cancers. Despite the constant recommendations of health care organizations regarding the importance of weight control, this goal often fails. Genetic predisposition in combination with inactive lifestyles and high caloric intake leads to excessive weight gain. Even though there may be agreement about the concept that lifestyle changes affecting dietary habits and physical activity are essential to promote weight loss and weight control, the ideal amount and type of exercise and also the ideal diet are still under debate. For many years, nutritional intervention studies have been focused on reducing dietary fat with little positive results over the long-term. One of the most studied strategies in the recent years for weight loss is the ketogenic diet. Many studies have shown that this kind of nutritional approach has a solid physiological and biochemical basis and is able to induce effective weight loss along with improvement in several cardiovascular risk parameters. This review discusses the physiological basis of ketogenic diets and the rationale for their use in obesity, discussing the strengths and the weaknesses of these diets together with cautions that should be used in obese patients. Diabetes Diet: Ketogenic Diets = Blood Sugar Control
A diabetes diet should not make long term diabetic complications more likely, but that's what the American Diabetes Association is still recommending. The 2018 ADA guidelines tell people with diabetes to limit fat and keep protein at about 25% of total calories. That leaves 45-65% of total daily calories from carbohydrates. ( See this document ). Based on a daily calorie intake of 2000 calories, that works out to 225-325 grams of carbohydrate per day. Type 2 diabetes is basically a disease of carbohydrate intolerance, so this advice doesn't make sense. Eating large amounts of carbohydrate causes blood sugar to spike, which the requires a large amount of insulin to bring it down. The result is that blood sugar crashes. We call this the blood sugar roller coaster. More medication and more insulin is needed to control those roller coaster highs and this increases the cost of diabetic care. The logical solution is to get off the blood sugar roller coaster completely. Following a low carb, high fat ketogenic diet stops this blood sugar spike/crash cycle and in many cases, helps you reduce or even eliminate the necessity for medications such as metformin. It can also greatly reduce insulin needs. Conquer Type 2 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet provides the practical information you need to implement the diet while managing insulin and diabetic medication needs.Coauthored with Dr. Keith Runyan, a physician who treats his own type 1 diabetes with a ketogenic diet (with the result of an HbA1c of 5.0) the book contains over 200 pages of referenced, applicable information on getting off the blood sugar roller coaster and minimizing the risk of low blood sugar and diabetic complications. How The Ketogenic Diet Works For Type 2 Diabetes
Special diets for type 2 diabetes often focus on weight loss, so it might seem crazy that a high-fat diet is an option. But the ketogenic (keto) diet, high in fat and low in carbs, can potentially change the way your body stores and uses energy, easing diabetes symptoms. With the keto diet, your body converts fat, instead of sugar, into energy. The diet was created in 1924 as a treatment for epilepsy, but the effects of this eating pattern are also being studied for type 2 diabetes. The ketogenic diet may improve blood glucose (sugar) levels while also reducing the need for insulin. However, the diet does come with risks, so make sure to discuss it with your doctor before making drastic dietary changes. Many people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, so a high-fat diet can seem unhelpful. The goal of the ketogenic diet is to have the body use fat for energy instead of carbohydrates or glucose. A person on the keto diet gets most of their energy from fat, with very little of the diet coming from carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet doesn’t mean you should load up on saturated fats, though. Heart-healthy fats are the key to sustaining overall health. Some healthy foods that are commonly eaten in the ketogenic diet include: eggs fish such as salmon cottage cheese avocado olives and olive oil nuts and nut butters seeds The ketogenic diet has the potential to decrease blood glucose levels. Managing carbohydrate intake is often recommended for people with type 2 diabetes because carbohydrates turn to sugar and, in large quantities, can cause blood sugar spikes. If you already have high blood glucose, then eating too many carbs can be dangerous. By switching the focus to fat, some people experience reduced blood sugar. The Atkins diet is one of the most famous low-carb, high-p Continue reading >>

Review: Ketogenic Mediterranean Diet For Weight-loss
REVIEW: Ketogenic Mediterranean Diet for Weight-Loss Ive put together a very low-carbohydrate Ketogenic Mediterranean Diet for loss of excess weight. Your body gets its energy from either fats, or carbohydrates like glucose and glycogen. In people eating normally, at rest,60% ofthe energy comes from fats. In a ketogenic diet, the carbohydrate content of the diet is so low that the body has to break down even more of its fat to supply energyneeded by mosttissues. Fat breakdown produces ketone bodies in the bloodstream. Hence, ketogenic diet. Also called very low-carb diets, ketogenic diets have been around for over a hundred years. *Note: it is a common misconception in diabetes that nutritional ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis are the same thing and there nutritional ketosis is unsafe. These two ketogenic conditions are drastically different. There are several practical advantages over other diets (disputed by some authorities): unlimited access to many high-protein and fatty foods better short-term weight loss than many other diets lower blood sugar levels, which is important to people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and metabolic syndrome reduced insulin levels in people who often have elevated levels (hyperinsulinemia), which may help reduce chronic diseaseslike type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, some cancers, and coronary heart disease improved levels of HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which may reduce risk of heart disease it obviously works well for a significant portion of the overweight population, but not for everybody better adherenceto the program compared with other diets, at least for the short-term TheMediterranean diet iswidely recognized as the healthiest diet . Despite an emphasis on bread, pasta, fruits, legumes, and certain vegetables, the Mediter Continue reading >>
