Pill Splitting: When Is It Ok?
Dr. Orrange is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Geriatric, Hospitalist and General Internal Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. If you take prescription drugs to treat a chronic illness, its possible to save more than 50% off cost of your medication by simply splitting your pills. Sadly, its not all that easy to know when pill splitting is all right. Not all pills can be split. However, many doctors and insurance companies are advising this strategy with an increasing number of medicines. (Its also worth noting that the American Medical Association, the American Pharmacists Association, and most pharmaceutical companies oppose pill-splitting.) Drugs that should usually not be split include capsules, chemotherapy drugs, birth control pills, seizure-related medications, and any pill that has a coating or other controlled- or extended-release feature. Be sure to check with your doctor prior to splitting any medication. Is it scored?Tablets that are scored can be easily split and have been evaluated by the FDA for safety. Invest in a pill splitter. Pill splitters are very inexpensive and carried by most pharmacies. If youre going to split a pill, spend the $5. Only split once. It is only recommended that you split pills in half, not any smaller. The dose per piece is too likely to be uneven and pills may shatter or crumble. Unequal halves. Even scored tablets can be difficult to split into two perfect halves, and medicine is sometimes distributed unevenly within a single tablet. Buy a pill splitter to help and dont split with a knife. Crumbs. Tablets that are round or too small may crumble easily or unevenly when split and that will affect the dose you are actually getting. Dont forget!Patients who are given a higher dose pill and Continue reading >>

Join the community Is the slow release Metformin the same as ..Film-Coated Tablets...this is what it says on my husbands packet. He has been taking them now for 6 weeks...since diagnoses of T2... increasing the dosage every 2 weeks as told to by his doctor until he is on 2 twice a day which will be next week. He has not had any problem with diarrhoea at all so I wondered if his are the SR kind Due to the large increase in size of the tablet caused by sugar coating drug manufacturers have largely changed to using 'film coatings'. These are very thin layers of an inactive excipient coated thinly onto the tablet to again protect the tongue from the flavour of the contents and the contents from moisture and light. The film will however breakdown with a little agitation from the stomach and additional water in the form of saliva or stomach acid. As such film coatings do not significantly affect the way in which the drug is absorbed. The modified, ( slow) release lettering is explained here. Modified release' means that the escape of the drug from the tablet has been modified in some way. Usually this is to slow the release of the drug so that the medicine doesn't have to be taken too often and therefore makes it easier to remember to take. The other benefit from modifying release is that the concentration of the drug in the body goes up slowly, is less likely to go very high and therefore reduces the chance of side effects. Tablets and capsules which are designed to provide modified release often have the letters MR, LA, XL, CR or SR in their names e.g. Diffundox MR, Elantan LA, Dilzem XL Calcicard CR, Dilcardia S,. Sometimes the words 'slow' or 'retard' can be used to denot Continue reading >>

When Do I Take Metformin For My Diet: Morning Or Night?
Metformin helps control blood sugar and increase your body's sensitivity to insulin. The drug is available only by prescription and sold under several different brand names, including Fortamet, Glumetza, Riomet, Glucophage and Glucophage XR. Your dosage will depend on your normal diet and exercise habits -- too much metformin can lead to low blood sugar and hypoglycemia. Always follow your doctor's directions for taking your medication. Video of the Day Metformin works by limiting your liver's production of glucose and stopping your body from absorbing some of the glucose in your bloodstream. Additionally, metformin increases your body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing your pancreas to produce less insulin. Keeping blood sugar levels stable can decrease hunger and food cravings, leading to weight loss. Metformin is not an appetite suppressant, nor does it boost metabolism; to lose weight, you'll still need to pay close attention to your diet and increase your physical activity. Standard vs. Extended Release Options The amount of metformin you'll take depends on why you are using the medication, how often you take the medicine, other medications you might be taking and the time between doses. The National Institutes of Health explains that metformin is available as a tablet or a liquid solution. Tablets come in an extended release dose -- Glucophage XR -- or in a standard release option. Extended release pills are designed to be taken once daily, with your evening meal. Standard tablet and liquid solutions may be taken once or multiple times daily -- with meals. Metformin should be taken with food. Always follow your doctor's orders. It's typical to start with a 500 milligram dose once daily, then increase both the amount of medication and the frequency. If you're using Continue reading >>
Can You Cut Or Split Metformin (immediate Release) In Half?
Can You Cut Or Split Metformin (Immediate Release) In Half? Can You Cut Or Split Metformin (Immediate Release) In Half? Can You Cut Or Split Metformin (Immediate Release) In Half? In our latest question and answer, the pharmacist discusses whether or not metformin (immediate release) can be cut in half. Can Metformin 500mg immediate release pills be cut in half? This is not the extended release pill. Yes, the immediate release metformin 500mg (and other strengths) can be cut in half without negatively affecting the medication. Cutting medications is often necessary for patients who have difficulty swallowing large tablets or need to take 'half' doses. If this is necessary, it is certainly OK and safe to cut your metformin tablets. Most manufactures of metformin tablets do not make the tablet with a 'score' mark (indentation in the middle of the tablet) unfortunately, making it sometimes difficult to successfully cut precisely in half. Due to this, a pill cutter is recommended versus using a knife as designed pill cutters will provide the cleanest cut. It is important that you take both halves of the medication as soon as possible and not store cut tablets for extended periods of time. Although metformin can be cut as mentioned above, split tablets no longer have a protective outer coating that most intact tablets have. This could make them more susceptible to moisture. Be sure to use split tablets as soon as you can and store the unused half in a moisture resistant container. Metformin 500 mg is produced by a variety of manufactures including: Continue reading >>

Why Not Metformin Er (extended Release)?
Regular metformin and the ER are both available in most areas as a $4 generic. Since the regular often causes GI distress, I don't understand why it's not prescribed initially. I could not take the regular at all. It was awful. ER is fine, no problems. I doubt it's less effective. I think it's greatly improved my sensitivity to my own insulin. D.D. Family Type 2 since June 2014, levemir & metformin In my case, I was prescribed the normal initially so I could safely and easily adjust dosage. For example, I can cut a 1000mg Metforming in half for 500mg or take the whole thing (for 1000mg)... or take a full one and half of another (1500mg), etc. etc. Of course, I could always just get 500mg but my doctor found it easier to prescribe with my insurance company 60 1000mgs versus 120 500mgs. Heck, now it's hard to even get 30 1000mg given changes to policies. If you put an infinite number of monkeys in front of an infinite number of typewriters... the smell would be terrible. Another difference is that the regular is effective in one pop. If the dosage is wrong, it will take longer to wear off. Also, the ER can not be cut in half. I told her to give her some water and keep on eye on her breathing. If she couldn't breath call 911. .... 911 was not necessary.
