As some of you know my mom was having problems taking 500 mg tablets of Metformin. She is taking reg Met, not the extended version. At one point, about the a week ago, we decided to cut the pill in 1/2 and give her the first half with dinner and the second 1/2 one hour later. At night she woke up and told my sister that she was getting itchy all over. Usually, when you get itchy you are having an alergic reaction, usually a mild one. I didn't ask my sister but, I don't think mom was getting any blisters/pimples. I'm allergic to penicilen so I know the symtoms of an allergic reaction. I don't think my mom was having an allergic reaction(she has been on Met for 1 1/2 yrs), but the itching did concern me and it still puzzles me. This was a week ago and I remember my sister calling me about 1am in the morning, my sister said mom was getting some itching comming up from her legs and on her arms. I told her to give her some water and keep on eye on her breathing. If she couldn't breath call 911. .... 911 was n Continue reading >>

I was on 500 mg Metformin ER since Sept 2013. Never seemed to do much, but I figured it wasn't hurting anything to take it.
It did cause my stomach to be a little flip-floppy if I was hungry for about 3 months, then that settled down.
Was taking 2 500 mg pills but spaced out, one at dinner, one at bedtime, but not every night if I fell asleep before I took my pill.
But that too didn't seem to be doing much, so my GP and I decided that I should try 3 500 mg pills.
I was to take 2 at dinner and then 1 at lunch. I started with the 2 at dinner.
    But my stomach has been a "flip-floppy mess"; it took a few days for that to happen so I didn't realize that was what was happening;
to the point that one night I swore I had tried to give myself food poisoning.
But the more days I took the two, the worse it became.
Its possible something else is going on, though I hope not, as that would be a worse scenario.
So, tonight I took zero. I'll give it a day or two and then go back to 1. Then I'll go back to 2, but 12 hours apart.
Then see if I can do 3, 8 hours apart.
I never did the regular metformin. I started with the metformin ER, as I have an inflammatory arthritis that causes gastritis and inflamed bowel,
though since I've eliminated the cow dairy that I was allergic / sensitive to, and have been on Humira for a few years,
my stomach has been nearly perfect.
But I've also learned in my lifetime that if something has the potential to mess with the GI tract, there is an excellent chance that it will mess with mine.
I'd like to hear your experiences if you had challenges taking metformin ER, and if you found methods that worked bettter than other methods in taking it.
I'm still optimistic that I can worked this out.

I only take the regular metformin, but always with food in my stomach. But, is there a chance you are getting the flu? I don't have it, but I hear this stomach flu is lasting quite awhile.

  3. living_laughing

What is the max dosage for Metformin ER? I thought Met maxed out at 2500mg, but not sure about the ER varitey. Could it be the medicine at 3500mg is just too strong?
If I thought the meds were making me sick, then I would be very cautious and back off them. Too much meds can cause just as many problems as too little. TikTok, I hope you will call your doc soon and tell him/her your symptoms since starting the new regimine and I hope you will find some relief soon.

Learn how to split a pill in half or cut a pill in half for medication administration as a nurse. As nurse, you may have to split a medication in half to equal the dose the physician has ordered. It is important to always be aware if a pill can be split or not. If you are unsure if a medication can be split, always call pharmacy to confirm whether you can divide the medication. When cutting a pill in half, it is best practice to use a pill splitter/pill cutter. A pill splitter is designed to achieve the most accurate cut when halving a medication. It contains a sharp blade and tray area that holds the pill in place during splitting. Always avoid splitting a medication with your fingernails, hands, or other sharp objects. If the pill does not cut equally or falls apart, check with your hospital protocols on what to do before administering the dose to the patient. Many hospital protocols require you discard the medication and start over. In addition, if you are administering a controlled substance don't forget to waste the other half of the medication with another nurse. Hi Everyone, I was just put on Metformin to hopefully regulate my period and ovulation and get pregnant. They just diagnosed me with PCOS, but said I'm not the normal 90% of women that get PCOS. I'm not overweight, no diabetes, etc. I was just wondering if there is anyone out there that is like me and has experienced success with Metformin and getting pregnant? Thanks!

  2. MinniaJs

I d like to share a very positive experience with Metformin. I was diagnosed with PCOS after very irregular periods and anovulatory cycles. I already worked out regularly and was a healthy weight. My husband and I tried for a very long time to conceive and were starting to lose hope. I started taking Metformin 1500mg per day. I found it without Rx (my friend share with me this code * METF4PREG *, you can Google it.) The first month, my cycle length was cut in half and the second month, I got pregnant! I never thought the day would come that I would see a positive pregnancy test. I continued the Metformin through my first trimester and we now have a perfect baby boy. Keep your head up and give it a try...I am so thankful that I did!

The good, the bad and the ugly of metformin

I have been taking metformin sense the day I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As you probably know, it is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and I doubt that there are many of you that do not take metformin. Metformin works by suppressing glucose production by the liver. Evidence suggests metformin may prevent the cardiovascular and possibly the cancer complications of diabetes. It helps reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels and is not associated with weight gain; in some people, it promotes weight loss. Metformin is one of only two oral antidiabetics in the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
One of my first experiences with diabetes was finding that when I worked out my glucose level would actually increase. That was very frustrating sense I was working out to lower levels of glucose. When I told my doctor she put me on a heavier dose of metformin, 1000 mg twice a day. As with most drugs the treatment of one problem often causes another. There is a whole list of side effects associated with metformin: abdominal or stomach discomfort, cough or hoarseness, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fast or shallow breathing, fever or chills, general feeling of discomfort, lower back or side pain, muscle pain or cramping and painful or difficult urination. Other problems metformin may cause which will usually diminish over time is: Acid or sour stomach, belching, bloated, excess air or gas in the stomach or intestines, full feeling, heartburn, indigestion, loss of appetite, metallic taste in the mouth, passing of gas, stomachache, stomach upset or pain and vomiting. I hope this isn’t too much information!
My latest experience with metformin was excess air or gas in the stomach. I experienced what seem to be a swelling in my throat followed by belching or burping. I cut my dose of metformin in half and the problem went away. Have any of you experienced discomforts with metformin?

Let me tell you about my awful 3 year journey with metformin! I dealt with all the horrible side affects for a few years Mostly massive pain and intestinal bloating all that goes with it to the point of doctors taking out my gall bladder then on to a colonoscopy and endoscopy and then on to a stress test! All was "just fine" Finally doc said take me off the metformin since a small percentage of people cannot tolerate metformin. Well low and behold I was one of them! After about two weeks most all of the hellish discomfort disappeared! I now take 50 units of toujeo every morning feel great and found a new lease on life energy wise! I am back baby!!!! It is just a shame looking back on how long I suffered needlessly. Not to mention the metformin wasn't even bringing my sugar down anyhow. All it did was make me extremely sick!!!
