As more and more people develop diabetes, they’ve started turning to complementary and alternative therapies, such as yoga, to treat the disorder, but not all those therapies work. A study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2009 analyzed all the available research looking at yoga’s influence on diabetes and complications of diabetes (for instance, kidney problems and high blood pressure) and found that, although not enough evidence exists to support the idea that yoga leads to long-term improvements, the authors did find that regular yoga practice led to short-term improvements in fasting glucose and cholesterol levels. Yoga And Diabetes – How Yoga Impacts My Blood Sugar
I decided to take a yoga class earlier this month, thinking it would be a great way to de-stress before I travelled to Sacramento to compete in my fitness competition and because one of the benefits of yoga is supposedly that it is a great match for diabetes. I definitely felt more relaxed afterward, but boy is yoga hot and hard work! I have tried yoga before at my regular gym, but this time, I chose to take a Bikram Yoga class at a local studio nearby that offers Sunday community classes for only $5. It’s a 90-minute class and takes you through the 26 different Bikram poses in a heated room. I liked the idea of a heated room, since I tend to get cold really easily, but I found that it also meant that I was sweating profusely even before class started. To say that my clothing and towel was drenched after the class would be an understatement. What I like about yoga is that you spend 60-90 min focusing on your breathing, stretching, and, in this case, sweating. The benefits of yoga are supposed to be great, and I have plenty of friends who practice yoga on a regular basis and they look and feel great. The primary benefits of yoga that lured me were the increased flexibility (something I really should be working on) and the sense of relaxation afterwards. I don’t see it as an alternative to cardio or resistance training, but as a nice addition. That’s also the reason why it hasn’t been a regular part of my daily routine. Unfortunately, his is not a unique story. The American Psychological Associations 2016 Stress in America survey reported that 80% of Americans experienced at least one health symptom related to stress. A third of Americans reported specific symptoms such as headaches (34%), feeling overwhelmed (33%), feeling nervous or anxious (33%), or feeling depressed or sad (32%). Stress has a particularly detrimental effect on type 2 diabetes since cortisol, the hormone that our body releases during times of stress, raises our blood sugar and has been linked with insulin resistance, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.I explain to my patient the impact of stress on diabetes control and tell him that I believe I have an answer (or at least something to try) that will address the multifactorial etiology for diabetes.
