Whitney Houston’s Death: Xanax And Alcohol, Lethal Duo

Whitney Houston’s Death: Xanax And Alcohol, Lethal Duo

In the wake of Saturday’s news that Whitney Houston had been found dead in the bathtub of the Beverly Hilton hotel, the exact cause of her death remains a matter of speculation. Houston was reportedly found submerged under water, but whether she drowned because she was unconscious or she was already dead before she slipped under water, there still remains the question of which chemicals were involved in the process. Houston had battled publically with pills, alcohol, and cocaine in the past. There were prescription medications in her hotel room—reportedly including Xanax—and Houston was seen around Los Angeles visibly disheveled and erratic, sources say. Houston’s death would appear to be yet another cautionary tale in an escalating story line. In recent years, as the use of prescription medication has proliferated in the United States, so too have the abuse of and overdose from many of these substances. Prescription-drug abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the U.S., says a report issued last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The same report states that in 2007, there were roughly 27,000 unintentional deaths from drug overdoses—or one death every 19 minutes. But of all the things that people ingest, there are few combinations more life-threatening than alcohol and benzodiazepines—the class of sedatives that includes Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin. The reason? When taken together, alcohol and Xanax have what’s known as an additive effect, which means that in the presence of Xanax, alcohol is made more potent than it would be alone. Both alcohol and benzodiazepines work by depressing the central nervous system of the body, reducing the activity of several broad-stroke mental functions, such as thought, memory, coordination, and r Continue reading >>

Diabetic Side Effects Of Xanax

Diabetic Side Effects Of Xanax

If you suffer from diabetes, you need to be aware of which drugs may interact with your system in a way that causes your condition to get worse. Although side effects of certain medications such as alprazolam, sold as Xanax in the U.S., may minimally affect people without diabetes, these effects can cause more severe problems for diabetics, affecting your diabetes in indirect ways. Video of the Day As a diabetic, you need to maintain a proper diet as well as engage in exercise and take your medication. Taking the benzodiazepine Xanax, which classifies as a central nervous system depressant, can suppress your appetite. This may mean you do not eat enough food to fulfill your required diet. If you continue to take your medication, this could cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. If this becomes severe, it could send you into a coma. So, while a decrease in appetite classifies only as a non-serious side effect of Xanax for most people, it can cause serious problems for diabetics, explains MayoClinic.com, which adds that a complete lack of appetite classifies as a serious side effect for anyone taking Xanax and requires notifying your physician immediately to get help. Conversely, Xanax may cause your appetite to increase, meaning you may eat more food than you should for your diabetic diet. Gaining weight can cause an imbalance in the glucose you ingest through food and the insulin produced by your pancreas. Taking medications that increase insulin production may not be able to compensate for the surge in food coming into your system. Increased appetite and gaining weight both normally classify as non-serious side effects, but they can cause hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels in diabetics. As a sedative and treatment for anxiety and panic disorders, Xanax may produc Continue reading >>

The Truth About Prescription Pills: One Writer's Story Of Anxiety And Addiction

The Truth About Prescription Pills: One Writer's Story Of Anxiety And Addiction

Magazine Plagued by anxiety and depression, Kelley McMillan unwittingly developed a dependency on the very meds that were supposed to help her. Almost four years to the day after I quit drinking, I visited my gynecologist for a routine annual exam. It was July 2012; I was 33 and exactly where I wanted to be: in love, writing for national magazines, and living the kind of adventurous life I’d always dreamed of. Two years earlier, I’d moved from New York City to Denver. My health was excellent (I was even training for a half Ironman), so I hadn’t bothered to find a general practitioner in my new city. I relied on my gynecologist for my few medical needs: blood work, breast exams, birth control, and my psychiatric prescriptions. After the standard poking and prodding, my doctor and I chitchatted for a bit; then she looked at me and said, “I’m worried you have a dependency on Klonopin. You’ve been on way too much of it for way too long.” Klonopin is a benzodiazepine, one of a family of antianxiety medications that includes Xanax, Valium, and Ativan. The National Alliance on Mental Illness warns that physical dependency may result after only two weeks of use, but some psychiatrists, like the one I used to see on the Upper West Side, dispense it as a long-term treatment for anxiety. I’d been taking 1.5 milligrams of Klonopin a day, a moderate dose, since I’d stopped drinking, though I’d been on and off it throughout my 20s to help assuage the disquietude I’d long battled. And it worked marvelously. Any self-defeating thoughts and stress about work, family, relationships—the tightness in my chest where my worry takes hold—were almost instantly dissipated once I popped one of those little yellow tablets. With my anxiety and drinking under control, my l Continue reading >>

Benzodiazepines Xanax, Valium, Ativan Found To Increase Risk For Alzheimers Disease

Benzodiazepines Xanax, Valium, Ativan Found To Increase Risk For Alzheimers Disease Dr. Malaz Boustani, patient, and caregiver. Dr. Boustani cowrote an editorial published along with the study saying older adults need to be cautious using these drugs. The bigger message is that we need to take care of our brains. And the first step is to do no harm.1 This new study found that people who took (were prescribed) benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax, Valium, Ativan) for 3 months or more were 51% more likely to develop Alzheimers disease than people who never took them. The risk was almost doubled if theyd taken them for more than 6 months: Benzodiazepine Use And Risk Of Alzheimers Disease: Case-Control Study , BMJ, September 2014 Conclusion: Benzodiazepine use is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimers disease. The stronger association observed for long term exposures reinforces the suspicion of a possible direct association, even if benzodiazepine use might also be an early marker of a condition associated with an increased risk of dementia. Unwarranted long term use of these drugs should be considered as a public health concern. Heres another recent study, same message: Benzodiazepine Use And Risk Of Dementia: Prospective Population Based Study , BMJ, September 2012 Conclusions: In this prospective population based study, new use of benzodiazepines was associated with increased risk of dementia. The result was robust in pooled analyses across cohorts of new users of benzodiazepines throughout the study and in a complementary case-control study. Considering the extent to which benzodiazepines are prescribed and the number of potential adverse effects of this drug class in the general population, indiscriminate widespread use should be cautioned against. This study also fou Continue reading >>

What's The Difference Between Alprazolam (xanax) And Fluoxetine (prozac)? | Sunrise House

How to Treat Prescription Benzodiazepines Addiction Whats the Difference between Alprazolam (Xanax) and Fluoxetine (Prozac)? Both fluoxetine , commonly known as Prozac, and alprazolam , or Xanax, are very commonly prescribed medications in the United States. In some cases, a person may even be prescribed both medications at the same time, depending on the nature of the symptoms experienced. There is a distinct difference between the two medications, however, and they will not be used interchangeably. It is important for patients to be fully informed about the nature of these medications and how they impact cognitive function and mental health, and to take into consideration potential complications or issues that could arise due to medical disorders or use of other medications. There are a number of potential issues to take into consideration when taking any medication and especially when taking an addictive substance like Xanax. For example, people who have glaucoma, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or over the age of 65 may experience greater risks with the use of Xanax and will likely be advised to look for other solutions to their medical issue. Additionally, those who are taking alprazolam should disclose that fact to their doctor or dentist if about to undergo surgery. It is always recommended to avoid driving while under the influence of the medication. There may be negative reactions if taking alprazolam in combination with certain other medications or supplements. For example, patients who are taking ketoconazole or itraconazole, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, painkillers, oral contraceptives, SSRIS, and other medications for the treatment of mental health symptoms (including fluoxetine), sedatives or sleeping pills, me Continue reading >>

Effects Of Alprazolam On Glucose Regulation In Diabetes. Results Of Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Trial.

Effects Of Alprazolam On Glucose Regulation In Diabetes. Results Of Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Trial.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of alprazolam on glucose regulation in anxious and nonanxious patients with poor glycemic control and establish whether regulatory benefits are related to anxiolytic effects of the medication. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with poor glycemic control, 16 (27.6%) of whom had a symptomatic generalized anxiety disorder, were entered into a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week trial using alprazolam (up to 2 mg/day) as the active agent. Generalized anxiety disorder was determined in accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria, and anxiety symptoms were measured using the Hopkins Symptom Checklist. Glycated hemoglobin levels were used to determine glucose regulation. Compliance behavior was assessed using glucometers and medication monitors equipped with electronic memory. RESULTS: A statistically significant reduction in glycated hemoglobin level was observed in patients treated with alprazolam compared with those receiving placebo (-1.1 vs. -0.3%, P = 0.04). This treatment effect was not a function of differences in compliance behaviors. Anxiety symptoms decreased in both alprazolam- and placebo-treated patients with generalized anxiety disorder, but reduction in glycated hemoglobin level was not dependent on alleviation of anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: A short course of alprazolam improved glucose regulation in patients with a history of poor diabetes control. This effect was not directly related to concomitant changes in anxiety. Alprazolam treatment of anxious patients with poorly controlled diabetes may result in decreased anxiety and improved glucose regulation through independent mechanisms. Continue reading >>

Beta Blockers Vs. Xanax

Beta Blockers Vs. Xanax

Beta blockers vs. Xanax A difference is beta-blockers are typically prescribed to treat high blood pressure and heart problems, and they are prescribed off-label for anxiety. Xanax is a different kind of drug, a benzodiazepine that is a type of tranquilizer, widely prescribed for anxiety. Beta-blockers work best for short-term event-related anxiety, such as social phobias and stage fright by blocking physical symptoms of anxiety including rapid heart rate, tightness in the chest, or sweating. They don’t affect the emotional and psychological aspects of anxiety such as worry. The beta-blockers most commonly prescribed for anxiety include propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin). Xanax works differently than beta blockers. It is a sedative and can cause drowsiness but it can be taken during an acute episode of anxiety or a panic attack, and they can relax people and help reduce stress and worry. Side effects of beta blockers that are different than Xanax include: Side effects of Xanax that are different than beta blockers include: Poor balance or coordination Slurred speech Trouble concentrating Memory problems Stomach upset Unlike beta blockers, Xanax can be addictive. What are beta blockers and Xanax? Beta blockers are drugs that block the effects of stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline). These hormones are what cause the physical symptoms of anxiety and blocking them reduces these effects, helping control some of the physical symptoms of anxiety. Xanax (alprazolam) is an anti-anxiety medication in the benzodiazepine family, similar to diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), and others. Xanax acts to enhance the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, reducing the stress respons Continue reading >>
