Some drugs for diabetes can have dangerous side effects. In a striking example, on March 21, 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed one of the most widely prescribed diabetes drugs, Rezulin (troglitazone), from the market after it was linked to 90 cases of liver failure and 63 deaths. Already concerned about such problems two years ago, the Aptos, Calif., resident began taking Sweet Eze, a mixture of herbs and minerals sold for diabetes. The supplement seemed to work wonders for the self-described "old hippie." His level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) -- a protein that reflects blood glucose levels over the past two to three months -- plummeted from 11 to well below the danger threshold of 6. "I feel great," says Cottingham, who has experienced no side effects from the supplement. "I'm completely off diabetes medications now." A success story? Perhaps. But experts advise caution. The studies compared patients who took cinnamon supplements in doses ranging from 120 milligrams to 6 grams a day for four to 18 weeks to patients who did not take cinnamon. Cinnamomum cassia also known as Chinese cinnamon was found to be the most popular cinnamon pill used in six out of the 10 trials. The participants of these studies had to take the supplement before, during, and after their meals. The authors of the review study found that type 2 diabetes patients who took cinnamon supplements had lower blood sugar fasting levels compared to patients who did not take them. The common kitchen spice was also found to reduce LDL bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and increase HDL good cholesterol, LiveScience reports . Some of the most commonly used dried herbs and spices may help block the inflammation believed to drive diabetes and other chronic diseases, laboratory studies conducted by researchers from the University of Georgia suggest. The researchers tested extracts from 24 common herbs and spices and found that many contained high levels of inflammation-inhibiting antioxidant compounds known as polyphenols. The early findings suggest that liberal use of cinnamon in your morning oatmeal or Italian seasonings in your spaghetti sauce could have big payoffs for your health, researcher James L. Hargrove, PhD, tells WebMD. "We might all be better off if we used less salt and pepper, and focused more on herbs and spices," Hargrove says. "I've started putting oregano in my eggs.
