Glu : My Diabetic Tattoo

Glu : My Diabetic Tattoo

I first decided I wanted a diabetic tattoo a few years ago. Sometimes you just dont want to wear a medical bracelet all the time. A tattoo is always with you so you cant lose it and you cant forget it! When deciding on a design, I didnt want something too big or something that would not represent the true meaning of the tattoo. So I settled on a simple design, just the word diabetic, in a beautiful font. I had the design, the desired location (wrist) and only had to tackle the hardest part convincing my parents. The first person I had to convince was my mom. Growing up my mom always said that tattoos on women looked cheap and I couldnt get one until I was married. Obviously, I didnt feel the same way. It took me almost a year to build up the courage to talk to her about it. One day on the news I saw a special segment on how medical tattoos, specifically Type 1 Diabetes and DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) tattoos, were becoming popular. This was a perfect video to show my mom to help convince her! I emailed her the video and waited for her response. She emailed me back with a Well see. Lets talk about it. Well that wasnt EXACTLY the response I had hoped for, but hey, it was ok, or so I thought. Time went by and we never talked about it. When I tried to bring it up, she changed the subject. It really frustrated me, but now I understand. Its hard to let your youngest get something so permanent! During that time, I asked some of you here on Glu how to convince and prove to her that it wasnt dangerous for diabetics. Yall (yes, Im a Texan!) gave me some great advice and I appreciate it greatly. A few months passed by and I decided to try and talk to her about it again. It was a hard topic to bring up but I did and she finally listened to what I had in mind. I showed her the design Continue reading >>

Diabetic Themed Tattoos ???

Diabetic Themed Tattoos ???

Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community Find support, ask questions and share your experiences. Join the community Hi all, been a diabetic for bout 16 years (i'm a 20 year old male) I currently have two small tattoos and had no problems with them. I would like to get a tattoo that has something to do with my diabetes but need some ideas does anybody have any cool diabetes tattoos or have any ace ideas ???? Please feel free to leave your ideas (and pictures if you have) I consider tattos to be self abuse, so you would not like to read my views on the complications of wounds to the long term diabetic patient. When I go into hospital I have no option but agree to be admitted to the High Dependancy Unit just because any wound could present complications and often in times of stress BG's can go alarmingly high. I've given this a lot of thought in the past. I've been looking into getting a tattoo on my ribs - an ambigram of the word DAIBETIC (an ambigram is a wood that reads the same when rotated 90 degrees). This looks really good - but you wouldn't necessarily be able to read it unless the word was pointed out to you. You'll just have to decide why you want a diabetic tattoo. Is it for yourself? (In which case, it doesn't really matter if it's not instantly recognisable as a diabetic tattoo), or is for the case of an emergency (ie - to notify someone that you are diabetic), in which case, it should be obvious (and readable!). Keep us up to date. Always interested in th ecase of new tattoos!!! You really don't want a spelling error in a tattoo!!! Also, you don't want spelling errors on your post, or on your Christmas cards... Oh, and can you imagine the difficulty you'd have if a spelling error got onto your shopping list?!? Cheers for the replys, Everyone has ther own Continue reading >>

Diabetes & Tattoos: The Only 2 Things You Need To Know

Diabetes & Tattoos: The Only 2 Things You Need To Know

Diabetes & Tattoos: The ONLY 2 Things You Need to Know Diabetics cant or shouldnt get tattoos would likely be uttered from the same person who would say people with diabetes cant or shouldnt eat carbs. Not only is it an ignorant, projected opinion filled with misinformation, but it is simply incorrect. For some odd reason, people with diabetes get treated like we have leprosy and get told we cant do anything and that gets pretty frustrating at times especially because it is the furthest thing from the truth! Getting a tattoo is a personal choice and if you decide to get a tattoo, diabetes or no diabetes, you need to make sure of the following: The tattoo shop is accredited, licensed, up-to-date legally, and clean The tattoo artist has good reviews not only of the quality of his or her work (no one wants a bad tat, right?) but the healing process You are willing to 100% adhere to the healing procedure as directed by your artist There are many in-home, or street tattoo artists that might be cheaper but never risk your health to save a buck. After all, cheaper doesnt mean better and, in most cases, means worse in terms of quality. By simply following the advice above, getting a tattoo shouldnt be a problem for the average non diabetic but as a diabetic, there are 2 huge areas of caution you need to be aware of: your A1C and your healing time. A1C Requirements for Diabetics Getting Tattoos As much as we sometimes HATE checking and living by our A1C, it is a relatively good tool that lets us know how are blood sugar has been. If you really want to get some fresh ink, whether its a small tattoo or a sick sleeve, you need to be sure your A1C is in check. Having a high A1C going into a tattoo session can provide a plethora of problems. Elevatedblood sugar levels mean decreased Continue reading >>

Unregulated Rise Of Medical Alert Tattoos Stirs Debate

Ben Roberts, a 33-year-old from Fowlerville, Mich., estimates that medical bracelets and necklaces have cost him more than $1,000 since he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 6. Frustrated, he headed to a local tattoo parlor four years ago. "It's a negative thing to say, but diabetes isn't going away any time soon," he said. "You might as well get a tattoo." Today, "Diabetic, Type 1" is tattooed underneath the six-pointed "Star of Life" with a snake running through it, the traditional symbol for emergency medical services. "It's hard to miss," Roberts said. "I'm happy with it — I've even gotten compliments from doctors and paramedics." Researchers and tattoo artists agree more people like Roberts are replacing traditional medical ID bracelets, which average around $30 at Walmart, with medical alert tattoos. STORY: Tattoos being used for medical alerts STORY: Safety tattoos, bands warn of kids' deadly allergies But the lack of regulation of the tattoos — which are intended to warn emergency medical personnel about diseases from diabetes to Alzheimer's — means first responders don't always pay attention to them. "We're not going to stop to read a tattoo in an emergency situation," said Don Lundy, president of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. "They can be complicated and hard to read. Medical bracelets and necklaces are what stand out." There's no hard data on the number of people opting for medical alert tattoos, but Saleh Aldasouqi, a diabetes expert in Michigan, said a quick Google search shows how popular they've become in recent years. Aldasouqi said despite this popularity, there isn't any medical literature on the tattoos. He has been pushing doctors to start talking about the tattoos to ensure they're done safely and effectivel Continue reading >>

Tattoos And Body Piercings: A Guide For People With Diabetes

Tattoos And Body Piercings: A Guide For People With Diabetes

The best way to know if it’s safe for you to get a tattoo with diabetes is to see your doctor or healthcare provider. They can review your numbers, draw your A1C, and determine if your diabetes is controlled. If your diabetes is not well controlled, or if your blood pressure is elevated, you should take measures to get both within range prior to getting a tattoo. After you are evaluated by the healthcare provider and they confirm that your diabetes is under control, you will be given clearance to get a tattoo or a piercing. It will also be a good idea to have the doctor write a note, or even a prescription, in attention of the tattoo parlor or piercing clinic that will be performing the procedure. Normally, a tattoo or piercing establishment will take the word of the client, and the forms that you fill out there should have a question about diabetes, and whether it’s controlled. Your response should be honest on the form, and if your diabetes is not well-controlled, lying about it could be to your peril. The question is on the form for your own safety, Understand that it is imperative that your diabetes must be controlled, along with your blood pressure, prior to obtaining a piercing or tattoo with diabetes. Considerations for getting a tattoo or piercing with diabetes There are many things that your doctor or healthcare provider should consider prior to giving you the ok for the procedure, even with your blood sugar and A1C in your target ranges. If it’s a tattoo, your doctor may want to know its location on your body. Areas farther away from the heart, and areas with poor blood flow are harder to heal, and people with diabetes may have existing compromised circulation in these areas. If it’s a body piercing, where will it be placed is important to consider. Wil Continue reading >>

Getting Inked: Tattoos And Diabetes

Getting Inked: Tattoos And Diabetes

Though you need to take extra precautions, tattoos are generally safe for people with well-controlled diabetes, and they can even be designed as medical alert identification. Should you get one? Permanent body art has become more and more popular with each generation since World War II, with 38 percent of Millennials (ages 18 to 34 in 2015) and 32 percent of Gen X-ers (ages 35-50) sporting tattoos, according to Pew Research Center. That’s more than twice the number of tattooed Baby Boomers (ages 51 to 69) and five or six times the number of those 67 and over. Ink Identity Tattoos may be a way of identifying with a group, or even a generation, but they are also a way of expressing uniqueness. Most college students surveyed about the process and significance of their tattoos said they considered the pros and cons for months before committing to permanent ink. Most had their tattoos applied at professional studios and were happy with the results. The majority chose an area of their body for tattooing that could be easily covered. Medical Tattoos There are a several reasons why someone might get a tattoo for medical purposes or as result of a medical procedure. A tattoo can cover a disfiguring scar, add a nipple to a reconstructed breast or redirect light away from a damaged eye. Researchers are currently working on “smart” tattoos that use nanoparticle ink or tiny LEDs implanted in the skin to keep track of glucose levels. Meanwhile, inked wrists and forearms have begun to replace medical alert bracelets for some people who require special attention in an emergency, such as anyone who uses insulin or is allergic to specific types of medication. If you dislike, or often forget to wear, medical alert jewelry, you may be more likely to consider a diabetes alert tattoo. Continue reading >>

Thomy Toolkit Could Make Life Easier For Children With Type-1 Diabetes

Thomy Toolkit Could Make Life Easier For Children With Type-1 Diabetes

Children with type-1 diabetes can administer insulin in a way that is both easy and fun, using this toolkit created by Mexican designer Renata Souza Luque. Presented during the Design Indaba conference in Cape Town this week, Thomy is an easy-to-carry kit containing a child-friendly insulin pen and a set of temporary tattoos, designed to make life easier for young people suffering with the medical condition. Souza Luque , a product-design graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York , starting developing the project after her seven-year-old cousinTomas was diagnosed. Like around 80,000 children each year, he found himself in a situation where he had to inject himself with insulin as often as five times a days, to prevent the level of blood sugar in his body increasing to dangerous levels. "From one day to another, Thomas has to deal with his fear of needles," explained Souza Luque. "I realised how much this was stealing from Thomas' childhood," she said. "That's when I decided I wanted to design something for children with type-1 diabetes, something fun, something they could look forward to." Her aim with the Thomy kit was to create something her cousin would be proud to carry around in his backpack. The two products inside are both designed to make the process of injecting insulin safe and easy. They respond to a series of three issues thatSouza Luque uncovered during her research. The first is that the site of injection must be rotated, to prevent lumps of fat developing. "When injecting insulin, it is crucial to rotate the injection site," she said. "But it's very hard to remember where you have already done so." As an alternative to the hard-to-use paper templates that are usually issued todiabetes sufferers,Souza Luque designed a set of temporary tattoos featu Continue reading >>

Creating Diabetes Tattoos That Sense Changes In Blood Sugar

Creating Diabetes Tattoos That Sense Changes In Blood Sugar

It’s not often that the words “cool” and “diabetes” get used in the same sentence, but researchers at MIT and Harvard have joined the two concepts with an idea for creating tattoos that change color based on the blood sugar level of the person wearing them. The project has the oddly dystopian name of the Dermal Abyss (or, as they call it d-abyss) and is a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and Harvard Medical School, according to Katia Vega, a post doctoral associate at MIT and a member of the team. “The Dermal Abyss is a proof-of-concept that illustrates the potential of culturally and medically integrated biosensors,” Vega says. “They are biosensor tattoos that visibly react to changes in the metabolism. The purpose of the work is to light the imagination of biotechnologists and stimulate public support for such efforts.” The tattoos they designed will not be showing up in a pharmacy or tattoo shop any time soon. “The purpose of the work is to highlight a novel possibility for biosensors rather than bring a medical device to market,” Vega says. “As such, there are currently no plans to develop the Dermal Abyss as a product or to pursue clinical trials.” Like a hot concept car, there is real technology in the tattoos that were produced for the project. Various iterations of the tattoos sense changes not only in glucose but in pH, which can indicate dehydration and changes in sodium ion, which can give indications of hypertension. For glucose, the colors change from a light blue at a reading of five, and go through five shade changes until it’s dark brown at a reading of 110. The team at d-abyss inserted biosensors in place of traditionally used tattoo ink into skin from a pig at a depth of 10 millimeter Continue reading >>

6 Tattooing Tips For People With Type 1

6 Tattooing Tips For People With Type 1

A tattoo aficionado with Type 1 shares his experience on getting some ink done. I wanted to get a tattoo, but people discouraged me from doing it because of my Type 1 diabetes. The naysayers told me that we didn’t heal well enough, that we got infections too easily, that there was just too much risk. But then I began noticing people with diabetes-related tattoos. Some people were getting them on their wrists in place of MedicAlert bracelets. Others were getting more elaborate tattoos on other parts of their bodies. I learned about Darren Brass, a Miami tattoo artist with Type 1 diabetes. I read in Diabetes Mine about a columnist’s tattoo. Apparently we could get inked. sponsor Of course, as with everything in life, people with diabetes have some additional things to think about when it comes to tattoos. There are risks involved, as a tattoo is an open wound. Some people with diabetes heal slower than others, making the open wound more prone for infection. Many of us also deal with poor circulation, making tattoos on areas furthest from the heart a little more risky. After doing my research, I decided to get a diabetes-related tattoo of my own. At first I thought it would be a great idea to get a MedicAlert tattoo. But as I thought about it more, I decided a more elaborate diabetes-related tattoo would be a way to own my diabetes. No hiding, no ignoring, no running away, it would be a constant reminder to me. This is what I did to make sure my first tattoo went smoothly: -Made sure my A1C score was less than 7.0. -Made sure my 14-day blood sugar average was below 140 mg/dL. -Got my doctor’s approval before going under the pen. -Made sure I picked the right artist, one who had a good reputation and a clean parlor. -Brought a snack and checked my blood sugar at least Continue reading >>
