Type 1 Diabetes Medical Bracelet From Mediband

At Mediband, we work hard to help you stay safe and feel protected at all times. If you suffer from type 1 diabetes, we have you covered. Our medical bands make it easy to alert others of your risks. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system mistakenly turning on itself, destroying beta cells within the pancreas and removing the body's ability to produce insulin. Insulin allows the body to process sugar to create energy - without insulin, the body literally starves as it cannot process food. The goal of type 1 diabetes management is to keep blood glucose levels as close to the normal range as possible. It sounds easy, but in reality, this is very difficult to achieve. To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must have a constant supply of insulin through injections or an insulin pump and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers at least four times a day. People with type 1 diabetes must be constantly prepared for potential hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycaemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can both be life threatening. One big risk of type 1 diabetes is the possible occurence of a diabetic coma, which is caused by both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Because it can be a result of both severely high and severely low blood sugar levels, wearing a Type 1 Diabetes Alert Medical ID Bracelet can indicate to paramedics to immediately check your blood sugar level when you are unable to tell them about your condition, allowing them to quickly act and provide the best form of treatment. By notifying them of the type of diabetes you have, it allows for fast identification and administration of your treatment, as well as lowers the risk of a misdiagnosis or receiving the wrong treatment. The more medical information you can provide a medical Continue reading >>

Which Medical Id Bracelet Is Right For You?

Living with diabetes requires vigilance. Monitoring your condition daily and taking medications prescribed by your doctor are both vital to your health. Even with proper management, medical situations or emergencies are still possible. Medical ID bracelets can come in handy during times of crisis, especially if you aren’t able to direct the person caring for you. A medical ID bracelet often does double duty. Not only can they be fashionable pieces of jewelry, but they also contain information about your condition and your emergency contact information. In some instances, wearing this simple accessory can mean the difference between immediate care and prolonged trial and error during treatment. According to a survey by American Medical ID, approximately 95 percent of responders look for a medical ID in an emergency situation. The survey also found that more than 75 percent of doctors look for an ID when assessing someone. Although medical information can be included on a number of different accessory items, such as necklaces or key chains, the survey found that about 95 percent of people check the wrist first. What information should you include on your medical ID bracelet? To ensure its efficiency, it’s important that you include all relevant medical information on your ID bracelet. Medical Identification Tag

Medical Identification Tag

A medical alert bracelet A medical identification tag is a small emblem or tag worn on a bracelet, neck chain, or on the clothing bearing a message that the wearer has an important medical condition that might require immediate attention. The tag is often made out of stainless steel or sterling silver. The intention is to alert a paramedic, physician, emergency department personnel or other first responders (emergency medical services, community first responder, Emergency medical responder) of the condition even if the wearer is not conscious enough, old enough, or too injured to explain. A wallet card with the same information may be used instead of or along with a tag, and a stick-on medical ID tag may be added or used alone. A type of medic identification alert is the USB medical alert tag, essentially a USB flash drive with capacity to store a great deal of emergency information, including contacts and medical conditions. This information is accessible by any computer with a USB port. However, the practical effectiveness of such a system is limited in many cases by medical computer systems that restrict the use of USB devices which may carry malware. It is also possible that a device carried by an unconscious person may not be their own, or not be up to date, with concomitant risks to health and legal liability of medical personnel. Another new type of medic identification alert is QR code based medical alert stickers. The QR code on the sticker links to a web service that contains the individual's emergency information. The information is accessed by any first responder or emergency personnel by scanning the QR code by using a smartphone. Since a web service is used to store the information there is normally no limitation of how much information that can be stored. Continue reading >>

Dos And Don Ts Of Medical Id For Type Diabetics | Diabetic Connect

Dos and Don'ts of Medical ID for Type 1 Diabetics By Dr John Latest Reply2014-02-05 17:24:16 -0600 I used to train paramedics. So, I know how they react or don't react. Also, many places are so desperate for volunteer paramedics, they often train people who are less qualified than they should be. Therefore, make it easy for them to identify your condition. I know of a paramedic who wears a morphine pump and has difficulty walking. Enough said 1. Type 1 diabetics MUST WEAR a MEDICA ID. 3. Wear a bracelet or wear a necklace. Paramedics are trained to look for a bracelet or necklace. 3. DO NOT wear an id that say "Diabetes." What does that mean - type 1 or type 2? What does that indicate - Hypoglycemia or cardiac arrest? 4. Wear an ID that says "Type 1 Diabetes." It can also say Insulin Dependent in addition to Type 1 Diabetes or insulin pump in addition to Type 1 Diabetes. 5. Most custom ID's are hard to read, especially in low light conditions. Pre-engraved is much better. Make it easy for the paramedics. 6. Bracelets pre-engraved on the back are less effective than one pre-engraved on the front. Make it easy for the paramedics. 7. In addition to your medical id, carry a card or piece of paper in your wallet providing all of your medical information such as type of insulin used, insulin pump, insulin to carbohydrate ratios, allergies, etc. Make it easy for the doctors at the hospital. 8. Remember, make it easy for the paramedic to identify your condition. Continue reading >>

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. With Diabetes Type 1, your body does not make insulin. With Diabetes Type 2, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood. You can also have pre-diabetes. This means that your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. Having pre-diabetes puts you at a higher risk of getting Diabetes Type 2. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious problems. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called gestational diabetes. Blood tests can show if you have Diabetes. One type of test, the A1C, can also check on how you are managing your Diabetes. Exercise, weight control and sticking to your meal plan can help control your diabetes. You should also monitor your blood glucose level and take medicine if prescribed. Why You Should Wear A Medical Id

Why You Should Wear A Medical Id

It's a scenario that many people with diabetes fear: being unable to help yourself because of high or low blood glucose. That's why it's so important to wear a medical ID. "A medical ID can speak for you if you can't speak for yourself," says Marcia D. Draheim, R.N., CDE, president-elect of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and a PWD type 2. For example, one of Draheim's patients became disoriented from low blood glucose while driving. Fortunately, a medical ID came to the rescue. "Once the highway patrol [pulled her over], they read 'diabetic' on her medical ID and immediately knew how to help her," Draheim says. Always Wear Your Medical ID The one day you choose not to wear an ID might be the very day you need it. "The challenge for diabetes educators like me lies in motivating people to wear medical ID 24/7," Draheim says. Finding one that you like enough to wear every day is key. Many people dislike wearing their diabetes on their sleeve -- or around their neck. Fashion-forward IDs may be more appealing to some, including Sheri Gouterman's 11-year-old son, T.J. "He refused to wear a traditional ID but was more than willing to wear a trendy bead necklace with the medical charm in the middle," Sheri says. Make Sure It's Clear Medical IDs now include temporary tattoos, beaded bracelets, and stretchy silicone wristbands. You can wear an ID around your neck or ankle, tied to the laces of a sneaker, or fastened to a jacket zipper. But before you let fashion sense overrule common sense, heed Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps member Bob Coulombe: Emergency responders need to see and recognize the ID as a warning symbol so they can treat you. "Simpler is better," Coulombe says. "If your ID looks too much like fancy jewelry, we may not recognize it as a medica Continue reading >>

All About Diabetes Medical Alert Id And Why You Should Wear One

All About Diabetes Medical Alert Id And Why You Should Wear One

In this article, we will look at why you should wear a medical ID/bracelet for diabetes. We will also look at all of the different types of medical IDs that are available for diabetes. There are literally hundreds of ways you can express yourself. However, you will want to make sure that your ID is not so decorative that it is unrecognizable as a medical identification. After all, the primary purpose of a medical ID is to alert emergency and medical personnel, and even the public, to the fact that you have a medical condition (in this case, diabetes). It won’t do you any good if you don’t wear it Wearing your Medical ID all of the time, even when you sleep, is important. If you get into trouble with a low or high blood sugar, and you can’t help yourself, emergency medical personnel will see that you have diabetes, and will know what to do to help you right away. If you don’t have your medical ID on you, then they aren’t going to know that you are diabetic. It happens every day that people with diabetes are pulled over by law enforcement for having a low blood sugar while driving. They may be swerving, or running off the road. If the law enforcement officer sees that the person has a medical ID on their wrist or other easily visible area, they can quickly determine that the person may be having a low blood sugar due to diabetes, and act accordingly. This could save you a whole lot of hassle, and keeps you safe. The officer will know what to do. They are trained to know how to treat low blood sugar for this very reason. If the officer does not see that you have a medical ID on because you forgot to wear it, he or she could think you are intoxicated. In general, all medical personnel and first responders know to look for a medical ID when they arrive on the scene Continue reading >>
